I watched that video and found a sense of peace about what minimalism really means. My husband of over 55 years passed in January, and I downsized to a one-bedroom apartment, which called for a lot of decluttering. Still, I had lots of new decor I purchased, and I felt as if I might have failed in any attempt to minimalize. But you reminded me that it is about what brings joy. Heaven knows I needed that joy! So, I am now comfortable with my many pillows and other "doodads" (yes, I'm Southern...lol) because they bring a sense of coziness to my heart. Other things, however, have now found new homes. We each must find our own path in this journey. I enjoy the calm, reasonable voice you share in your videos.

I have always been frugal but also I have hung onto everything that I would think could still be useful, or that I would be able to use sometime. I have books that I flip through and think I will read but never do because many of them were ones my husband bought. There are clothes that are too small but I have hung onto in the hopes I will lose weight. Actually that was not that bad because when my mother went into a nursing home she gained weight and could wear my old too small clothes. My husband grew up extremely poor, in a shack with no running water. He would get rid of nothing, and he also would buy nothing ( except books). I was the one to purchase all of the clothes and tools. I even made the decisions on big ticket items like a car. I still live in first house we purchased in 1971 and have all the same furniture. Besides all of the personal accumulated stuff from 53 years in the same home, there is stuff from my brother, husband, and mother that I have from when they died as well as inventory from my closed business. I did sewing and crafts for decades, so a lot of that is left. I kept thinking that I would get back to it when I had the time and I am still waiting for that to happen. I have 1000s of pictures and slides to go through. I did purchase a high end photo, slide, and negative scanner that can automatically recolor and clean up bad pictures. Now I have a lot of it digitalized photos organized in folders on the computer. My kids are amazed when they ask me for a particular picture from a trip or time in their life that I can within a minute or two find it and text it to them. These pictures are now grouped by year and subject.
I made a game of it this year to start the purge. I set a goal of getting rid of 3000 items by the end of the year. They are sold, donated, or trashed and I keep track every day on a yearly planner and spreadsheet. I am also keeping track of the money I spend that is not for a normal bill. So far I have exceeded the 3000 items and am working on the next 1000. This is definitely a slow process but it is coming along. It is channels like yours that keep me motivated.

Tim, your video from a year ago changed my life! Due to health issues, I knew I had to let go of a lot in my home in order to make it easier for me to care for alone. The thing that stood out in your video (a year ago and now) was not minimalism, but rather, use of the word "essentialism!" Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to let go of the clutter while keeping precious memories and things I actually really need as my focus. I parted ways with well over 50% of my lifetime accumulation of "things;" my home looks so much better, I feel better, I think better, I even sleep better. I began my journey about the time you dropped that first video, and I am ready to go back thru my home now for a second round and see what things I can let go of now that I thought were essential then but have proven otherwise.

It's insane to me that filling up spaces like that has become the norm. It wasn't but a little over a century ago that people were grateful to have a handful of things. Just how quickly things have changed. The more that we have the more that people seem to be seeking out meaning and purpose too.

And our dinner plates are as big as their family-of-four serving plates. As a society, we are kind of like an out-of-control child in a candy store, I'm afraid.

A couple of days ago, my husband and I went for a drive into western New York. It was a less populated area than we live in. The countryside was beautiful. Over hills and through valleys. Small towns and farmland. Alot of space with no houses at all. But we also passed about 4 or 5 storage facilities. Looking at the space all around, I was struck by the fact that so much extra storage was needed. It's crazy. This country runs on people buying things. Sales pitches are everywhere. It is important to stay mindful all the time about purchases and not be swayed by the constant bombargement of sales pressure. And yes, we also have a storage unit! we have gotten rid of so much in the last 6 months... and that adventure continues.

Hi, Tim! It was this time last year that UA-cam told me about you and I was hooked from the beginning. Thanks for the inspiration and the encouragement to look at my life as a retired person, as the playground it is for me! Through letting go, I've actually found myself and am having a great time just doing things I've always wanted to do in ways I decide upon for myself. Not all decluttering is about stuff. In my case, it was also about the clutter in my mind and concepts I clung to that were never serving me, nor those I care about. It's a shame that I had to reach 65 to learn so many important truths about life and myself, but praise God He allowed me to get here! Thanks for the videos. I hope you are able to continue making them. Have a lovely day, Tim!

We loved the lack of clutter in the rentals and decided we should try to make our own home a similar relaxing retreat. We've achieved this. Now we feel less pull to flee our home in order to relax. Our son thanks us that we've cleared our home of the stored items that he would eventually have had to clear.

Just in the last 1.5 months we have decluttered over 500 objects (of all sizes but not any furniture). I have made about 5 or 6 trips to the thrift store with my large car trunk filled with donations. That's not counting several trash bags of stuff we got rid of and that's not counting things we have given to family and friends. I have been decluttering for the past 4 years since I retired as time permitted but I have found that I didn't declutter enough as I should have. I finally got my husband on board the decluttering train more than he was before. We still have more decluttering to do but it takes time to go through all the things. 🤣🤣 Sometimes trying to decide whether to donate, sell or give to friend/family member takes time as well. The journey continues. ☺☺

Getting rid of kitchen utensils is a tricky one. I m not a big or frequent cook, but it's not like a NEVER cook, either. So once in a year, or every other year, the juicer does get used, or the whisk, or the ridiculoudly oversized, almost unusably big bamboo salad bowl, for my birthday garden party. Otherwise they are just gathering dust. But once a year, they make me so happy. And like this it's with many things. Hefty, spacious winter boots that I use for like,a week every other year when i m home in the winter and there is a snowstorm. If i didnt have them then, I d be out of luck! And like most of my things, they are of excellent quality, and weren't cheap, and I hate rebuying. Also, 2 spare duvets and blankets if once in a very blue moon I spontaneously have TWO guests staying over at once, in the wintertime. Just stuff like that. But my life would be so much sadder if i didnt have these lovely, super special occasions.

My story is I’m nearing the age when we will downsize in a few years.
We’ve always continually donated and sold what we no longer used. Our family has a “giveaway” box going most of the time- to challenge ourselves to let go of what we are “done enjoying” as we say. From the time they were talking toddlers just about to be in preschool, I’ve taught our daughters to say, “thanks for the good times!” before (without coercion!) donating something they didn’t want or need any longer.
My goal as our kids are grown and will move out in a few years, is to downsize our belongings in our larger home in preparation to fit into a smaller home, so we don’t move all the unneeded items with us.
Doing this pre-downsizing step is cathartic for me, even though we’ve been continually preventing overwhelm. Proves that point that keeping up the habits for essentialism keeps our lives lighter, free of taking care of so much stuff, and even arguments about putting away so much stuff so it’s not something to put away when company is coming, lol…
Just a simpler life. It definitely makes a difference as I’ve gotten older, realizing that it isn’t the stuff that makes us happier, it’s the people and less stuff that makes life simpler and more meaningful.

Hello again, Tim. Honestly, your videos make so much common sense to me and obviously to many other viewers also. I am inspired time and time again to just buckle down and begin my decluttering but once again, I procrastinate. When I do take a look at a place or area of my home that needs decluttering desparately, I just don't know where to begin, there's so much 'stuff', as you so correctly mentioned about your own journey. For instance, I have so many dishes (Fiestaware to be exact) that hold so many memories and are coveted these days that although I have too many of them, I don't want to just donate and have no idea where or if I should sell them. I have loved Fiestaware since I was a little girl and my aunt had a set, which she later sold to me, so there's a good deal of nostalgia associated with these dishes. However, even as I read what I just wrote I hear in my mind, "they're just dishes after all".
Of course, that's far from the only area of clutter and owning more than we need that is present in our home. I have enough yarn to begin a huge knitting circle and even a huge crocheting circle for that matter in which we could create lovely things indefinitely. 😂 Now how long did I think I was going to live in order to use all of this yarn, who knows, but it's overwhelming at this point in my life.
Your words and thoughts are consistenly reassuring to me and they inspire me to feel as though maybe there is hope for me to 'just do it' and stop the putting off the task or feeling the overhwhelming of it all. Thank you for being there and being a positive mentor. 😊

Box the yarn all together...When you are ready "work " on it as a separate project. In my neighborhood there is a small group of friends and they meet in alternative weeks, share tea and cookies and they all kneet together. The final products are donated. Some into foster care families and some scarves to homeless people during the harsh winter nights. I am at awe with this group...So, you will use the boxes in your own time and way...but for now take them out of your way, just to clear your thinking 😊 Just my thought bubble

How we got into collecting so much stuff is a mystery. My parent's home growing up was neat and tidy and pretty sparse with things. But somehow my generation got stung with buying more stuff as a pacifier. Why is that? My guess is one thing that did not exist for my parents were the big box and discount stores, or buying on the internet. Too easy to accumulate things we really do not need.

I like your word "essentialism" versus "minimalism". One of the things you said really stuck out. "Things you know longer need." I categorize possessions from worst to best: 1. OMG. What was I thinking when I bought this? What a waste of money. That's mostly furniture items, most of which I Gave away or paid people to haul away. 2. Things that did have use, but I now longer need. Mostly those are cookware. I was never an avid cook, but now I barely cook at all, and that works for me. I did go through my cookware a couple of years ago, but it's time to go through again. That's my last place to tackle in my current re-declutter. 3. Possessions that I could probably keep chipping away at. I did a pretty good job with clothes, especially as I'm retired. I love looking at nice clothes, but don't have impulse to buy them. 3. Possessions that I do love, and will make room for them. Marie said I could LOL.

Life is so much richer with less material items. Personally there is a more peaceful and calm feeling within myself, my home and family. Good job Tim for your wise observations and continued message to perhaps millions. God bless you and continued success with your journey.

Congratulations, Tim! Been enjoying your content from the start. I’m glad you made a point of talking about how your creativity has sparked with less “stuff” filling spaces and basically bogging you down. I’m over here making small progress and needing to start in again. A return to my creativity is exactly what I’d like to see in myself, and this video was inspiring. Currently a right hand injury is challenging me to keep up on cleaning as well as my norm for the past week. Tonight I’ll be working in my kitchen (the best I can), and will include decluttering with my cleaning routine. I have had success doing it as part of maintenance in the past, and am anxious to do so again. Thank you as always for a great talk!

We scanned most of them, and many were already digitized because of our cameras. I have a filing system and backup system, but I really need to do something with them (downsize the number, etc.) And I find they never get viewed in their digital form. @@eirenmist2301 It's difficult to recommend things because I have learned that mileage varies with each individual. All I am qualified to say is that we used the Epson FastFoto FF-680W Wireless High-speed Photo Scanning System and had success with it. We scanned hundreds and hundreds of photos with it. I honestly do not recall now about scanning slides and negatives. This is something for you to research and read reviews from other users. Mr. Childers might have insight into this, given his photography expertise.

I have watched your videos and you have inspired me to get rid of things as one of my managers passed last weekend and the other is not sure what he is going to do. It’s family run for now. I am worried about the future where i am and since I am past retirement age and still working, (necessity,) I need to get rid of a lot of things. I did get rid of my old furniture and got a sofa recliner which is all I need. It is hard to get rid of things. I need to go thru my clothing and get rid of what I don’t need. If i have to move I hope to be rid of things I don’t need. I am worried about the future here so I needed the motivation to get started again. I hope they won’t sell (for another year at least) so hopefully that will give me time to be rid of extras. I also need to organize which would help.
