First Rib Self Release Technique

- Dr. Rowe shows shows an EASY first rib self release technique that can get pain relief in as little as 30 SECONDS.
This video is really going to focus on an elevated first rib. So if you're experiencing pain in the neck and top of the shoulder region, you may have strained the area around the first rib.
That’s when the soft tissues around the neck, shoulder, and upper ribs stiffen up, causing issues with range of motion, POP and CRACK sounds, instability, and pinching pain.
So we'll tackle this first rib pain with a self adjust (self mobilize) technique in the form of easy AT-HOME exercises and stretches.
Think of them as helping to RESET your first rib and helping the soft tissue around the neck and upper back move and glide more freely which (hopefully) leads to more range of motion, less popping and cracking, and just makes the it feel better overall.
Again, these stretches are really EASY to do and can be done at home or work.
So WATCH NOW and get that first rib feeling better with this self mobilization exercise!

so we are not directly pressing the first rib with the strap, right?
we are pressing and releasing the muscles that is pulling the rib (scalene, etc), am I right?
OMG - I haven't been able to fully turn my head for years. I did this and I can turn my head now!
That’s fantastic! Thanks so much for watching.
For real?
I had been struggling through some neck/shoulder/trap issue that was going down my arm and into my AC over the span of about 7 months.
A guy at the gym today mentioned the first rib, so I came home and found your video.
I used a loop of webbing for rock climbing.
After one round of your full routine I am 80% better.
Amazing!
Super grateful you took the time to post this tutorial.
Glad it’s helping, and thanks for watching!
I’m desperate, did this help long term
I have this saved in my videos, come back to it constantly in the last three years. This is one of the most helpful videos I’ve ever come across.🎉ty!
Glad it helped!
Thank you for your public service. I have been dealing with doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists for what has been termed to be a bulging disk and pinched nerve at the CT junction for three months now. This first rib mobilization exercise helped a lot as soon as I did it. It would appear that the first rib has been overlooked for its role in pinching nerves and blood vessels.
Thanks for watching!
These exercises are saving me! Thank you!!
This really helps bring so much relief! So glad I found your video! TY!
this dude is a genius, I love how he describes the motions and everytime i do it, it helps 100%
Glad the exercises are helping you!
Avid cyclist clocking in ~180 miles per week both indoor/outdoor as season permits. About a year ago I started having left neck muscle spams to where my neck would basically "lock up". Started yoga & 1st rib mobilization exercises but still had trouble (and pain) turning my neck left. This strap technique is the best I've found so far. After one set I could turn my neck without pain. After about an hour the pain returns. I just pull the strap out again and repeat. Rome wasn't built in a day.
How are you now?
Yes Chiropracter said behind my collar bone where the first rib sits is out of alignment. Been weeks. He couldn’t touch it because it hurt too much. That was. Over a week ago. I’ve been resting it. This stretch has already really helped me. I hear a bunch of popping. This is great to know and I will remember in gratitude! TY
Thanks for watching!
Worked great for me. Drastically improved range of motion and ability to work my physically demanding job pain free. Thank you
I did get the yoga strap and the balls. I felt alot of relief after using the yoga strap and followed up with kieba ball massage. My ribs cracked back into place and are no longer inflamed. Thank you.
GOD BLESS YOU!!!! I knew it was my first rib bothering me and never had a way to get pressure in the right area to correct it. While watching your video, I simply applied pressure with my opposite hand, turned my head, and both heard and felt it go back into place. THANK YOU!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I'm home, dealing with covid symptoms and have not been able to go to a chiropractor. This was an absolute godsend.
Hope it helps for a long time to come, and thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this!! I have been feeling a pinching pain deep between my shoulder blade and spine which kept getting worse. I tried everything and painkillers didn't help one bit. Couldn't get an adjustment either due to COVID-measures. These exercises gave me almost instant relieve, I'm so grateful to you!
Happy to help, and thanks for watching!
OOoh i likey! This is definitely something I'll be adding to my repertoire of stretches and movements!
Sounds great! Let us know how it goes.
I slept poorly last night and woke up hardly being able to move. It got a bit better through the day but I still had limited ROM and pain. I saw your vid and didn’t have a yoga strap but just used my other hand to pin and I got two solid pops while going through this and while the pain isn’t completely gone, it is so much better. Thank you!
I'm glad you were able to improvise, and got some relief!
I Love you man, you save my life . I from brazil , ty!
Thank You Dr. Rowe 🤠
Thanks again!
Great stuff
Thank you SO much! Even my chiro hasn't been able to give me as much relief as this technique has. Life-saver!! Much gratitude.
Glad you found the video, and thanks for watching!
I am a Physical Therapist Assistant (I work in a SNF) and I have had numbness in my thumb, and 1-3 digits for about 4 years. I have seen a PT twice and concluded its not cervical and it’s not thoracic outlet. The 2nd PT did say she thought it was the elevated rib. She showed me how to do the 1st rib mobilization with a gait belt but I could never quite do it right. Thank you for mentioning the yoga strap. I am going to get one and try it again because the numbness is getting worse at night where I am waking up 2-3x with numb fingers. It can take 15-20 minutes for the numbness to go away. I have been miserable. Thank you for these!
Hope the exercises help, and please give us an update soon.
Make sure it's not carpal tunnel!
@@flowerpixel it’s self diagnosed carpal tunnel. Lol I decided to start wearing a wrist splint for Carpal Tunnel at night a few weeks ago and the numbness is completely gone.
Just did this technique and it gave a perfect relief. Could also feel the mobility gain in my shoulder and feeling that I'm once again to have some muscle tension on my teres major. Deffo gonna keep doing this for now on a daily basis. Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Chronic problem for me 25 plus years...Thanks
Excellent video. I had this in PT (including bed sheet). But they had no documentation on how to. So this works. My strap was 6ft and I am 5'7" so I am ordering a longer one. (I got mine for just under $6)
Thanks for great video
Thanks for watching!
Thank you! this was very helpful.
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching too.
Used 2 Leather belts joined. Works like a charm. Thanks
Great tip, and thanks for watching!
Man everytime I looked all the way to my right, and then down, I heard this knacking sound. Did your technique, and now I'm easily looking to my right with no weird cracking sounds. I can't thank you enough man.
Glad the exercises are helping, and thanks for watching!
Great advice. Thank you
Thanks so much for watching!
Seems to have helped my sternum and tos pain. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
OMG!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I have had multiple physical therapy and chiropractor appointments and sad to say they could not relieve the pain. I tried your technique today and WoW!!
Wonderful to hear you're getting relief, and thanks so much for watching!
Thanks!

Very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Hi thank you very much I’ve had shoulder and neck pain for over 10 years . This video helped me a lot . Is it harmless to do every day?
Just commenting for the algorithm monies, great content as normal bro
Thanks for supporting the channel, we really appreciate it!
Do these excersices help fix the problem long term?
Really appreciate your work, thank you!🙏
Hey Dr. Rowe!
I just wanted to drop in & comment so you know you helped another human! I have struggled my whole life with an elevated 1st rib (right side),. I used to work as a PT aide a long time ago & when I saw the gait belt , or "yoga belt," around your shoulder, I immediately remembered the techniques my co-worker (herself a DPT) taught me. I don't currently own a gait belt (but i ordered one), yet just doing these release techniques with pressure from my husband's hand and only 1-2 repetition along with the your video has already offered me noticeable symptom relief. YaaaY! ...Well, good luck with everything & I hope this crazy year/virus has not damaged your practice in any way.
Warm wishes & thank you again!

Thank you for the kind words. I hope these exercises help you for a long time to come, and thanks so much for watching!
This is amazing I felt a pop my first time and my pain was reduced more than 50% I still have pain but not as bad. I am trying to do this daily because pain comes and goes. My job I have to be in poor posture position which causes my rib to go out constantly. Thank you so much
Glad you’re getting relief!
Thanks for the valuable information. How long would it take to correct the 1st rib misalignment?
Thank you :D
Thanks for watching!
Forgot the yoga strap trick! Love this one 👍
Thanks so much for watching!
First exposure to this concept
Worked almost instantly. Thank you!
Glad it worked instantly, thanks so much for watching!
Thanks! Hope this works
Hope they help too, give us an update in the near future!
Applying a heat mat to the shoulder for 15 minutes before hand, as hot as you can stand, also helps loosen up the muscles. If it is a rib, it also helps it release easier.
Is this safe for patients with Ehler's Danlos or Hypermobility?
The technique really helps, the discomfort decreases almost instantaneously ! will keep practicing . do u suggest massage on the 1st rib bone area ?
Hope the exercises help for a long time to come, and thanks so much for watching!
I need to stop being a bum and go back to the chiropractor.
The video helped me tho so thank you
Glad the exercises are helping!
Can an elevated first rib cause the clavicle to stick out on one side?
so is there no way to pop the lower ribs? i only see videos on the upper ribs
This helped me alot. I suffered from a tight upper back after a though workout with too many romanian deadlifts. Nothing helped, no foamrolling, no massaging device whatsoever. This has been bugging me for more than two weeks now. What a relief it is that it's much better now. The bad thing is that it felt as if it affected my whole spine down to the lumbar area. Really annoying. It will take a while to fully go away but this routine will help me to geg rid of it completely. Thank you so much.
Hope the exercises help for a long time to come, and thanks for watching!
I know I’ve had an issue with my first rib for many years. I had a pt tell me to do this, but incorrectly, and I always had the strap right up next to my neck and it would cause even worse headaches 😢 I’m going to try this! Can doing this regularly help your rib to stay there? I have hypermobility so I’m assuming it’s a cause of it moving. Thanks in advance!
What does one do if a spare rib has been yanked out of place by oblique pressure? LMT here with a client who is a lifelong dancer with a fairly slender figure and her spare rib is out at the bottom on the right and it seems to poke her. Wondering if just decompression all those lateral ab muscles would allow the bone to come back into better alignment [may never be the same but the pressure off it would help them]
im gonna try this right now, my sternum and chest keeps popping and not sure what to do, thanks!
Hope it helps, let us know!
Might I ask which strap that is? Couldn’t find one with a ring like that for tightening. Also how is it you have it connected on the back side?
I dropped weight down on my chest and had a little pop in my left side chest . Should i be concerned? Its sore im sure from working out . I guess what im asking is do the ribs pop sometimes like fingers ?
I am doing this and stretching middle scalene (left side) i get tons of stretch on the rib and the muscle, exact spot on what i think gives me headache and diziness. I do not get any stretch on anterior scalene so im not stretching right side. Should i keep stretch middle scalene (left side) until i dont feel any stretch anymore? Also training trapezius with barebells, will that make anterior/middle scalene stronger too? Got weird first after excersise but fantastic after, thank you for video! 😊
Hey i really like your videos so i figured id ask, so my lower ribs popped out of place and i feel it when i take deep breaths and such. So i was wondering if chiropractors can help heal slipping rib (false ribs) i went today and got adjusted but i dont want this to become chronic, worst pain ive ever had. Been about a week of popping pains and i dont wanna make it worse.
Chiropractors have made mine worse. PRP has helped. There’s a slipping rib group on Facebook with lots of info.
Thanks Dr Rowe, do you have a technique for self adjusting the first and second ribs? My chiro adjusts them with me lying down, putting his hands behind those ribs in the back, then dropping his body weight down on my chest. That works but I’d love to be able to do it myself
By any chance did you ever find a video that showed you how to self adjust your own first rib? I hope Dr. Rowe answers this question as well.
@@antvids05 no, that remains elusive, though I do find the strap technique helps. If it keeps happening to you (mine was chronically unstable) I recommend prolotherapy. It has helped me a great deal. Good luck 👍
@@johnburger4962 Thanks for sharing that. I'll keep the prolotherapy in mind and give the strap more time to work. I have a backpod order coming in that I'm hoping can isolate that hard to reach first rib to self adjust. If it works I'll share the tips
I’m not understanding how the strap thing works… sit on it? Looks like it just wraps around your waist?? TY
Mine is out on the front,? Is this the same technique as back ! This looks like it would make my problems worse
Advice please: my right collar bone sternum joint pops when moving shoulders back and forth and is chronically inflamed and bigger than my left. The exercises mentioned help immediately, no popping or pain after the exercises but half an hour later the popping is back, I think my muscles are accustomed to the wrong positioning so they always fun** it up again.
Do you think doing these exercises in the morning and evening every day will stop the popping long term.
(The collar bone doesn't pop out of the joint it just snaps a lot, and hurts a little bit)
Was wondering this too
Subbed, can we do this without the strap?
Thanks for the sub! You can substitute a sheet or large towel for the strap, but you'll need something of that sort to be able to do this exercise.
I bought a yoga strap just to pop the rib but it doesn't work. I have tried many things to no avail. It's been over 6 weeks
Is this manoeuvre effective in treating Thoracic Outlet Syndrome due to an elevated first rib? If so, how many times a day do you need to do this exercise and for how long until you see results?
Not designed to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. This can be used as a daily exercise.
Thanks for replying sir. Do you mind explaining why it’s not suited for TOS? I thought TOS is caused by an elevated first rib. Do you know other exercises/treatments that get rid of TOS?
I have slipping rid syndrome of first rib and other conditions I’m so miserable don’t know where to turn anymore. There’s a Dr that invented a surgery to fix it for good but he’s cash only. It gives me trouble breathing I beg family to pop it and when they get it right I can breathe for a while.
Ma première cote remonte tout le temps et j'ai mal au pectoraux et trapèze
Quelle en est la cause ?
Can we buy a yoga strap to support the channel?
Thanks for the offer, but as of now we don't have anything of that sort in place. Amazon is a good way to get a cheap one though.
I had a adjustment done and now my ribs hurt right under my breast. I can't lay flat I have to stay seated can't even laydown to sleep have to sit in a chair. Please help.
My top rib has been out for days. I am hoping this helps.
Hope it helps, let us know!
@@DrRowe my top rib is still out. It isn't quite as painful today after a couple days sleep. I just ordered a yoga strap. The sheet I used and was able to sit on helped some. I don't understand why it won't pop back in. I cannot afford to go to the only Palmer graduate in town until after I get moved. I will continue to watch your videos and try it all. I am hopeful for good results. Have a Rainbow Day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. You are a Godsend.
When you say first rib, do you mean the first one starting from the top?
Yes
This just made my 3 middle fingers numb.
tip: connect two belts together. Perfect fit!
Actually I admit this is a terrible tip; you'll stretch your belts out. Even better: Ross/Marshalls has a lot of them for like $3
I have this on both sides and both hands are freezing and weak 😭
sir , my lowest point of the left rib is poppoing outward ...
last 10 years
should i aslo do this excercise
.
Are you sitting on the strap?!

Were you?
If not you have a doppelganger good day
