The initial reviews of the S1 and S1R were way too harsh on the system's autofocus and in my experience, painted it in a far worse light than was warranted. I got an S1 about 5 months after it came out and it was nowhere near as bad as they made it out to be. Since then there's been significant improvements via firmware too. If you're not shooting sports, DFD is fine against anything I've thrown at it. I'm really glad I decided to try Panasonic out, and I've now picked up an S1R as well. Love the heavy duty bodies which feel more at home with big optics compared to my Sony, and the ergonomics are excellent too.

Agreed. Not to mention, people are rarely honest with themselves about how certain features and the implementation of those features will realistically impact their shooting experience or quality of output. I use a fraction of the features on my cameras. And often, I use a less efficient method for certain tasks because "my way" is more comfortable for me and my ability to quickly navigate the camera out in the field. We want all we can get when we're shopping... It's a syndrome I think.

I have a G9. Its AF was terrible until, I think, the second most recent firmware update. It's OK anouw, and its tracking modes have improved a lot too. I think the Lumix S cameras followed a similar path.

Pixel-shift high res modes are generally more about marketing than practical benefit. The one exception is the Olympus EM1 III. Whatever magic sauce the Olympus uses, it works incredibly well hand held, and is visibly better than similar technology from other brands.

Best use for hi-res mode (well, only really) is doing reproduction work. I have a friend that paints and she needs high res shots to send digitally when shipping actual paintings is not suitable. Has worked very well, since I am already on a tripod.

Thanks for your perspective on the autofocus. I’ve had an S5 since December 2021 and I can’t understand what all the fuss is about.

Thank you for saying that about tracking modes. It’s ridiculous how many people freak out about those. I have never used a tracking mode ever and always shoot in single shot

Another tidbit for question #2 and manual focus for Panasonic body and lenses. The ability to change from non-linear to linear mode for the focus ring, as well as control the travel distance in degrees from close focus to infinity focus.

I just added a used like new Leica CL and am getting the Leica TL 35mm f/1.4 used in ex condition.
I am going to use the CL as B&W body with my primary body an SL2 for color, the CL crop factor will give my lense
a 50 percent longer reach so it adds choice of composition.
I have many M lenses and as pointed out the CL was designed to make M adapting and using a joy.
I also have a G90 and EM1 mkiii but the larger CL sensor given its tiny size means its my go to street camera.
As far as the quick focus and tracking etc.. I have the Sony A9 mk1 which is all the action and low light camera I need.
I am shooting a wedding for my family soon and still deciding what to take.

The APS-C crop mode is no better than cropping to the same size in post. Actually, cropping in post is better because you can crop to any size you want. APS-C mode might be useful if you mount APS-C lenses. Not otherwise.

A used Leica SL in now pretty close to the price of an S5. I would like to get an L mount camera for stills work with vintage lenses. I know the SL has no IBIS but it seems like the best choice for a second stills FF camera. What would be your choice? Love all you reviews. Thanks for such good comprehensive work.

Great video. SL2 and Q2 owner. Struggling with bird photography on SL2 and would be amazing if you could one day do a video on this camera and this genre but you’ve also inspired me to try out without the tracking modes on.
I love the l mount alliance. Just waiting for a sigma 70-200 2.8!! Best wishes from Greece.

Thank you for this video. I have a Leica CL with an l-mount kit lens that I find quite useless for what I do so I bought a Sigma 28-70mm lens which I use all the time. I ordered a Lumix S1R full frame camera and I was wondering if a Leica 16-35mm l-mount lens would be a good choice for both cameras. I was wondering because the Lumix camera is a full frame camera and the CL is an APS-c camera. I love the colours Leica cameras render and wanted to see if the Lumix would render the same colours with a Leica lens. Or is it all in the bios and the software in these cameras? It was a difficult choice but I decided on the l-mount for my next camera equipment. I am a writer but I have been doing photography since high school. And high school was along time ago.

I'm interested in seeing a color depth comparison between the SL-2 and the SL2-S in a variety of lighting situations. Some reviewers seem to be hooked on test charts, but I like your approach of side-by-side, real world applications and comparisons. Test charts are for technicians.

I did one comparison of the SL2 and SL2-S (ua-cam.com/video/5joe8i7Lakg/v-deo.html) but I am going to do another project with both of them soon!

@@LeighAndRaymond Thanks for your reply. Yes, it was a good review, but I'd like to see something like an SL2 and an SL2-S on side-by-side tripods, switching the lens back and forth specifically to compare the color depth in various lighting situations. It would be interesting to see how subtle or how strong the differences are, since they have very different sensors.

Thank a lot for this video. Just the true experience about L mount, love it.
About the AF-S I have a little bit of different experience ( with the S1) I find the AF-S perfectly with the Panasonic 24-105mm but with the 70-200mm f/4 is significantly slower. And for sigma, I literally give up on AF with the 85mm f/1.4 and the macro 105mm f/2.8 ( use sometimes for portrait, never try AF for macro). I know the Sigma I have is not the best at AF but from what i experience every day I'm faster to manual focus when I use the sigma.
And for the HRM I'm happy to see that not only me who feels like that. Yeah that a nice tool I use it from time to time but the quality of the photo is already so good I never really feel the need to use it.

I have seen so so many mediocre pictures from Leica photographers it's unreal. Most of it is trying to elevate oneself through the use of a status symbol. As a previous Leica MP owner, the cameras are ok but most digital cameras now have everything you need to create beautiful photos! And 60% if it is great post-processing skills. Better off spending time and money on Photoshop classes!
