I have the 35 and 65 f/2 for my SL2s and both are great. I sold my APO Summicron SL lenses because of weight, lack of aperture ring and the limited choices in terms of focal length. (Leica still hasn't released a 21 or 24 SL prime lens.) I am waiting for the rumored 20mm which I would prefer over the 24. (But at least I have an option now.) For the price I think these lenses are outstandingly good. And usually I am not into third party lenses.

I have two Sigma contemporary lenses, the 45mm and the 24mm f3.5. They are excellent lenses, amazing value for money. I have a Sigma FP and a Leica CL. Most other L mount lenses (Leica and Panasonic) are big, heavy and very expensive. I do manually focus the Sigma lenses for video, but yeah, not really practical for moving photo sessions.

I love your videos! I am a painter who has recently decided to get more serious with my photography. I recently purchased a Sigma 24mm f2 for my Sigma FPL. And I am glad you agree with the other reviewers that it is an excellent lens. I know this is an old video but you pose the question if we would like to see you test out the sigma FP, and I say YES. See if Sigma will lend you an FPL, many reviewers have called it the "Japanese Leica". I am curious to see what your take on the camera is. I love mine, but its a recent purchase. What attracted me was the performance, build quality and ability to customize. I have a wooden grip on mine.

Thanks James, I used to paint before I discovered photography in my late 20s. (Water colours- were OK, fine detail acrylic model painting I got quite good at). Yes I will try to get the FP when I have a gap in my videos to do list, hopefully later this year.

I own 2 of the FP-L - without eVF, because I git used to compose pictures with the display like I do with my phone. And: this little gem is not only a Japanese leica - it is the Leica 2.0: the best dynamic range of ALL ff cameras according to photnostophotos, very near to the MF GFX 100(s).

So, I'm a Sigma Foveon lover and have a few of the DP series cameras and recently got a great deal on the sd Quattro (APS-C) mirrorless camera that came with the 30mm f/1.4 DC Art lens and it's been interesting comparing it to my Leica Summarit 35mm f/2.4 ASPH. The Leica Summarit is the perfect balance between clinical and character in my opinion, only hindered by the Bayer sensor for level of detail. It requires very little correction and defringing and does a great job of DOF falloff. Probably one of the best things about Leica lenses.
The Sigma is shockingly good, and paired with the Foveon Quattro sensor makes it seem like I have a portable 4X5 film camera with me. The lens would probably be too sharp and clinical if it wasn't for the subtle tonal control and natural rendering of the Foveon sensor (especially in BW). The Sigma does need a bit more correction (handled automatically in Sigma Photo Pro) but does have more fringing issues than my Leica. Biggest drawback is the size, especially for an APS-C lens. The sd Quattro isn't the tiniest machine either, but I would love to use the 24mm that you got based on your CL shots for thee Quattro if they made an SA mount version.
I think on your Leica's the rendering is a bit too clinical and modern for my tastes compared to the Leica glass I've shot...but for the price on an L-Mount system, it would be hard to pass up, even compared to my Summarit.
I wish you were were closer, I'd love to see what you do with a Foveon camera for your style of shooting!

I have a Sigma fp, a Lumix S1R and this Sigma 24 and the 90 2.8 (and had the 45mm). I use them mostly handheld at night (street photography). I love them. I prefer 24 to 28mm now. Very dynamic. These lenses are a joy to use and are not sterile like some of the Art one before.
Hugh Browstone refers to them as the Sigma summicrons. Along with some nice manual focus lenses, they are made for a great kit.

My fp is just becoming my M mini... Love it more than I thought I will.
But it's definitely a camera one should try before buying!
I rented it for few days first, and despite liking it, I still had complains and didn't think I will buy one...
But after, it grows on me (the colors are fantastic and files are a joy to edit) and I finally bought one. No regrets!
Not for everyone of course, but way better than many think! And a low light monster like the SL2-S.

Matt, I shoot with the S5 and CL. The only autofocus lenses I use are the Sigma DN DG lenses. I own the 45mm f2.8 and the 28-70mm f2.8 currently and I plan to round out my L mount lenses with this 24mm f2 and the 90mm f2.8. That will give me all I need in terms of wide to long angle lenses for the S5. With the CL, I will have even more reach and you're correct, the sharpness of these Sigma lenses is amazing.
However, every lens I own for my Fujifilm X-Pro3 in native X mount is manual focus only and I've been slowly moving all of my manual focus lenses to Voigtlander with the appropriate adapter for each system I shoot. It's a love experience. I know you don't shoot Fujifilm but if you ever get your hands on an X-Pro3, use your M mount lenses on it and let me know if you still want to keep your CL. I debate myself on these issues every day. 🤣 Keep bringing this great content. I like it when REAL photographers review gear with real-world use cases.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It's a very nice lens for portraits! I meant faster than the L mount Leica lenses. There is a big difference between the L-mount Leicas and the Sigma in battery consumption on the CL, but I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just because it's a full frame tele and requires stronger motors, but the difference is surprisingly big.

This lens (and the range it's part of) may be one of the most compelling reasons to buy a Lumix S5.

Hi Matt, I think you missed the biggest pro on using the Sigma lenses…the close focus! I don’t think I’d buy any of their Art series lenses because of their size but the f2/2.8 series are comparatively small side by side relating to both Leica and Panasonic autofocus L mount offerings. I like my Sigma 35mm f2 and it works great when paired with the SL. I find it large on the TL2 even though it is smaller than the Summilux-TL (don’t own one but did check it out at the Leica Store). Personally, i enjoy using my Leica R glass on the SL more for most things but appreciate the convenience and close focus capabilities of the Sigma. I recently bought two inexpensive vintage M42 lenses that I’m dying to try out. Still waiting on the adapter, though.

Thanks! I did mention the close focus but I guess I should have included it as a pro at the end too, correct. Now I use the 7Artisan close focus adapter I can focus close with every lens so it's less new to me now (getting close).

At 9:22 you say they do have a scale, but they don't have a focus ring, while you're showing how the aperture ring turns. The thing is, the focus ring is just in front of the aperture ring, and I'm sure you realize that the lens can do manual focus, so why did you say that? Another problem with this video is that all through it there are title overlays that say Sigma 28mm f2 DG DN . . . but you're talking about and showing the 24mm f2 DG DN. In fact, I don't think Sigma makes a 28mm f2 DG DN lens, do they?
Thanks anyway for posting this video. I'm glad to see the bokeh examples, and I like to hear your thoughts on the lens.

Thanks, sorry if it came across badly. I'm used to classic metal and glass lenses such as for Leica M so I'm used to true focus scales/ rings etc (not fly-by-wire). This is was a referred to but it was nice they included a proper aperture ring that's missing on many similar modern lenses. Also yes sorry for the 28 vs 24 thing. My brain isn't the best so sometimes I write or say different to what I wanted to say (and then in this instance miss it when reviewing). I did the same with a M10 video and said M11 throughout. 24mm is correct.

    again nice review,
I own only the Sigma art 2.8 70mm macro. The sharpness is perfect, but the autofocus is terrible. I just use the lens for scanning my negatives, so I don’t care about the af. But for me is sigma not my first choice.

It’s a macro lens. They do not focus quickly, it’s just inherent in the design. Same with the 105, which I use on the SL2, but that has a range switch which does help when you are using it for portraits, etc.

I have the 65 and 90mm versions of these I series lenses for Sony . I wish I’d not gotten the 90 and mainly because it’s not an f/2 .
I wanted it for a Smaller run and gun video kit and it’ll sill work for that but still think I need faster.
I love the glow of lightning I’m getting from these Sigma lenses vs the very very ugly rendering of light sources from my Sony GM lenses. By trying to suppress lens flare they suppress so much character. So many new autofocus modern glass is too perfect and dull with it’s rendering.
That said I prefer the rendering overall over Sony GM glass .
As for Voigtlander and Leica glass depending upon their design rendering is usually beautiful.
For my work I’m struggling not having autofocus.
I shoot some film but just don’t have the time . I want the Leica M5 and will through time get it and more m mount glass . It’s so adaptable for one . I usually don’t need the electronics of either the Sony or Nikon bodies I shoot with for manual focus. I shoot many old non ai Nikkor glass . I like soft and dreamy even on a 45mp sensor sometimes. Rendering is the first impression someone sees of an image . I have had some younger people say my videos shot with high resolution digital cameras and Sigma Art and Modern Nikon glass wasn’t very sharp looking. Even exported at 4k . I think people are becoming engrossed into the cell phone AI pictures.
For me sometimes a completely out of focus picture can be beautiful.

Thanks, yes i'm a big fan of older glass as you probably know. Adding a mist filter to the Sigma makes them good enough for me for my portraits. It takes the modern edge off the photos so less digital looking. I need that.

I bought a Sigma 35mm 2.0 DG DN for my Leica L and sold it pretty quickly. I thought the rendering was too clinical and the colors too grey and boring. I then went the other way and used the SL with an old Jupiter 8 lens. Loved the results. However, my wife is constantly complaining about my slow focusing, so I am thinking about getting a Lumix 50mm 1.8 autofocus lens. From the photos I see on Flickr, the rendering is more "film like" than the Sigmas.

Thanks Thomas, I reviewed the Sigma 50 1.4 too. It’s sharp but big. The SL with MF glass is great, press the joystick to magnify zone, fine focus, click. I shoot all my SL model stuff / weddings like that.

I found the Panasonic ones to be better overall especially for video and they are weather sealed. You can also set the linear focus throw angle for these lenses. They’re not as pretty as the Sigmas, though.

Sigma lenses are terrible. They can compete with some of the best current optics at a fraction of the cost. How are those other companies supposed to remain profitable? In seriousness, I am not sure about Sigma. I have seen some truly excellent sample images when the light is right. Great dimensional feel. However, I have also seen some images that look flat with dull colors. Furthermore, the lenses seem to break quite frequently. I have some friends whose sigma lenses stopped performing and developed issues.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom That is where I ended up so I can have one set of lenses for multiple bodies. I ended up with film SLR lenses. I can use them with 35mm film. I can use them with FF mirrorless. I can use them on APS-C mirrorless and even with a speed booster if I want. The SLR lenses behave better on mirrorless camera's than rangefinder lenses. I have a few modern auto focus lenses for certain shooting conditions, but I keep the number very limited. Most lens progress that has been made is in improving performance at wider apertures on fast lenses like f/1.4. Usually by f/2.8 and almost always by f/4 those older film lenses are showing little difference between old and modern. At least on older high-quality lenses. I have found out that when I can I prefer to shoot from at least f/2.8 or f/4. I am not that into shallow DOF even on portraits. I do shoot at f/1.4 or f/2 but seldom.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I love the R glass in all but weight. Those are some heavy lenses. You can't take many of those and avoid shoulder surgery in the future. In fairness, this is both an advantage and disadvantage. The weight helps reduce shake and helps with vibrations from mirror movement in a SLR. Due to the weight, I have better success hand holding in low light and slow shutter speeds. On the other hand, I have more issues carrying all that weight especially up inclines. Luckily, they had some good zooms like the 35-70/F4 that addresses the problem of carrying multiple heavy lenses.
