    This 50/1.4.. Colour, micro constrast, and bokeh are the best in my taste.. I even consider buying into Lmount just for this lens..
    I like aperture ring and focus clutch, though, it's super fun to use, and makes this lens apart from others..

    While price of subj is really high for 50mm glass I understand after this review why it cost such money.This lens has comparable with Carl Zeiss Otus sharpness but its AF! (Otus MF lens) and btw Otus cost 3500 euro. Achieving such sharpness level at 1.4 on FF is very heavy task and only few lenses on market can do it, and most of them more expensive than this one.Thank you for good review which clarifies high price question for this lens.

    The problem with the aperture ring is less that it's there and more where it is. It's practically in the middle of the lens, which is right where your hand is gonna be to support the weight. Unless it's an old preset lens with the aperture up front, the ring should be _waaay_ in the back so you _can't_ turn it by accident. That and when it's clicky, in my opinion, it should need two fingers to turn it. Not just a flick of the finger. That's probably why I never seem to have an issue with vintage lenses. I physically can't turn the ring because my hand is never near it, and even if it was, they actually require some force to turn.

    I picked up the S1 with a 24-105 in April with no intention of buying their 50mm 1.4. Then I tied it at an event. Yeah, now I’m shooting it just about every weekend at weddings. It is pricy but is one of the finest lenses I have ever used. Great review! And I hope you make a book of the horse ranch images. They are stellar!!

    • @JCANPetros

      Steve Vansak have the S1, 24-105 combo too. Haven’t tried the 50mm. Is it really that good? The 24-105 is really nice, is the 50mm noticeable better?

    • @stevevansak7324
      @stevevansak7324 5 років тому +2

      JCANPetros Well, those two lenses serve two different purposes. I think the question is whether the Panasonic 50mm 1.4 is better than the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4. My answer is yes, but probably not worlds better. I use the Panasonic 50mm 1.4 for my business so in that regard it was worth it and also is the best 50mm lens I’ve ever shot with. Rent it and set up a shoot and see what you think. Download Jared’s RAW files too. Keep in mind that the Sigma L mount glass is now starting to roll out as well. If you want a 50mm type lens for simply street shooting, the Sigma 45mm 2.8 is also out and is a fraction of the size and cost. Have fun with the S1!!

    Good review, but I think you're overly critical of the focus clutch. Manual focus clutch is amazing there's no reason to dislike it. Also, changing aperture on the camera is nice, but it's very convenient to have on the lens for quick changes. Fuji does it and people love it.

  • @keithgoreham1463
    @keithgoreham1463 5 років тому +3

    I have this lens. Love the “clutch” focus ring. Makes switching from automatic to manual focus mode super easy. If it’s in manual, the focus-peaking kicks in and makes it obvious to the user. But Jared is spot-on in saying the aperture ring needs a lock. Or at least the camera should say “manual” aperture someplace in the viewfinder to prevent 2 minutes of WTF after pulling it out of a bag. Hell, even my old Nikon D primes have aperture locks on them.

  • @kbmats
    @kbmats 5 років тому +4

    About the aperture ring, I think it depends on your shooting style, for me it's faster and I don't have to check the screen or the EVF to know the aperture, I never had that problem of "oh no I have the wrong aperture cause I just changed my lens" or "oh no the aperture ring moved on my bag!".

    L mount roar never disappoints! Now that the Sigma art 50mm is here, id love to see a review. Havent tested the lenses side by side, but isnt it really a no-brainer with the 750,- Sigma art VS 2300,- from panasonic. After all... All L-mount equals native´ish? And, which client would ever notice? Just sayin...

      The cheaper sigmas are coming. In this lens’ defense, it has zero focus breathing and astonishing sharpness. Both of which would be big pluses for videographers. Although the aperture ring isn’t click-less. The all-metal construction of the lens also seems to act as an effective heat-sink when shooting on hot days. When the camera can get quite warm.

  • @darkknight8139
    @darkknight8139 Рік тому

    This is one of the best full frame 50mm lenses on the market right now, especially when you look at sharpness. Maybe it is the best. The Leica Summilux-SL 50mm 1.4 has exactly the same image quality, and autofocus of that one is really slow. The lens is heavy, but so is the S1. Balance is just perfect when holding it like you would hold a big lens with two hands.
    I don't think I should graduate to setting aperture on the camera either, because setting it on the lens doesn't require looking at the screen. When using this system for a long time, muscle memory wins. It is just like handling a Fujifilm X-T5 or Leica M camera: you literally will get a feel for it. The same holds for the manual focus clutch, it is way easier and faster than using the manual focus dials on the camera itself. The Lumix S1 and S5 are by the way one of the few cameras where the AF and MF controls on the camera are put in exactly the right place.

    Again, this was a really good and comprehensive summary of your main review --- wish your bit about filters was more widely known! Anyhow, you could also consider here the new Leica 50F2 SL lens which --- from a MTF perspective at infiinty and close up --- is probably the best lens ever designed by Leica. Leica also make their own superlative 50F1.4 SL lens, but this 50F2 is truly spectacular. It is also considerably smaller, lighter and cheaper than their own 50F1.4, but is still about 50% more expensive than the Panasonic 50F1.4 reviewed here. Btw, the Canon 50F1.2 you noted is a true bargain!

    How does it differ to the Summilux 50mmf1.4 is it sharper, has it better 3D rendering, is it the same formula? Sometimes technical data is not all if the photos have a better artistic look. How does it compare to the Canon and Nikon 1.2 versions recently released?

    • @FantabMedia
      @FantabMedia 3 роки тому +2

      I compared it to the (two copies of) RF 50mm 1.2. The RF was a beautiful lens but the Panasonic is sharper, has far less CA (basically none while the RF has a bit) and I just prefer the rendering of it. YMMV of course but the S-Pro 50 and the RF 85 (I found that quite a bit better than the RF 50) are the two best lenses I've ever tested. Not tested the Summilux!

Real photographers put their gear through some rough environments out in the field. Panasonic have small G-series "General" cameras and no-holds-barred S-series "Specialised" cameras which are, so far, large. They do balance better than Sony, though Sigma have indicated that they will also make some compact full-frame lenses - starting with the 45mmF2.8 which several Leica people have been getting for the CL. They'll probably release an SX1 or S10 etc which will be smaller later on.

    Speaking of that focus ring with the clutch built in. I can say from experience that they used the same exact clutch type manual/auto focus setup on the Tokina 100mm Macro, it is a POS. The clutch on my Tokina locked up apparently and I tried to move it from "manual" to "auto" then the auto focus stopped working. Tokina told me the mechanical clutch arm somehow got bent (internally) and told me they wouldn't honor the warranty because I somehow damaged it. So I really hope that lens doesn't have that same issue especially for $2300.00.

    Present sir...even tho I'm not down with the L-Mount Alliance..they do have nice expensive lenses ;-p
    ps. I hate horror movies, both Carrie & Children of the Corn scarred me for life at 7 years old...I should've listened to my parents and stayed in my room.. lol

    You’re telling that they’re only 3 Lenses available. But that’s simply not true. There are probably more lenses available than for Nikon and Canon DSLM cameras. Sigmas Art Lenses and don’t forget the Lenses from Leica itself!

    Is it me or was the B&Ws blown out? Zero detail on the horse's head... I guess if you pull the exposer way down In post but he did say he really liked it.

    • @keithgoreham1463

      They are blown out in his photos, which I can only assume was done when processing the raw. The S1’s photos, as shot, are a tad too contrasty. But they’re nothing like Fro’s shots here. But then again I do set my exposure compensation down by .3ev to .7ev to preserve highlight detail in post. Maybe Fro clipped them?

    @7:00 so the horse has a beard... could be a post-menopausal mare. P.S. - the movie producer who got an unpleasant surprise in The Godfather was Jack Woltz. Moe Greene was in GF 2 and got a bullet in the eye during the big whack scene.

    Ummmmmmm, no. Asking for the average to buy this lens is like asking the average to buy a bottle Don Perignon for drinking water. It’s not worth the price. Professionals are looking at changing out their equipment every 3 years. Reliability and precision is paramount.

    • @keithgoreham1463

      @@tesha199 Because I've been shooting with the S1 since it launched. Five and a half months now. My decision to buy it was based on the quality and reliability of the Panasonic GH5 that I've had for over a year. Panasonic does things right. Literally the only ding against the S1 is the autofocus at launch time, but now that it's been updated, it's competitive with every other mirrorless camera.

    Great lens, but who is going to buy it ?. Most professionals are still using either Nikon or Canon DSLRs, and will already
    have all the lenses they need. I expect it may appeal to the camera fan boys who have more money than they know what
    to do with, but need to have the latest gear even if they never use it.
