Once again you have managed to make we watch a 36 minute video on a camera system that I will never own! Well played sir, well played 😀
With regards to your CL, remember “what is yours is mine, and what is mine is mine” only applies to wives...

And with regards to making use of what you already have and not needing to change, that will definitely be my position once my X-Pro3 arrives.

Thank you for your video, Hugh!
    Questions on the SL2 -
    (1) How is the eye AF?
    (2) Can the AF keep up with people moving, like a wedding march?
    (3) How well does camera perform in low light?
    (4) Can shooting settings be preset and assigned to buttons (C1-C3)?
    (5) Compared to Nikon/Canon cameras, is there equal amount of post editing in Photoshop or Capture One?
We liked the Nikon Z7’s image quality, but did not like its eye AF or its low light capability.
We also liked the Panasonic S1. That camera can see in the dark. However, the AF was suspect. And, its image was not as good as the Nikon Z7.

As an SL user for some time, I enjoyed the four button layout as well as long press shortcut a lot, it feels minimalistic and in my opinion better than the current 3 button design that favors videography, and I rarely have to take my right thumb off the joystick, now with SL2 it might be less possible to do so.
Also, I really want to know the issues in SL has or has not been addressed in SL2, (with 24-90mm SL lens) such as the noticeable noise above ISO 1600, unable to turned off Long Exposure Noise Reduction which lead to additional wait time equal to the amount of exposure time. Less appealing jpeg direct output that will require tuning dng in lightroom in order to be visually appealing. And more, hopefully you can help investigate. Thank you very much.

Your change of screen from b&w and color, then back to b&w, gave an illusion that a past you and a present you speak at the same time! Well done Hugh! I know I m not going to buy it after I finished watching it, but i know for sure I will remember your video for long time to come because there are so many wisdom in it no one can buy with money. What can be said about Leica better than you already said it??? For an amateur shooter like myself, a camera such as the SL2 is the Holy Grail of photography/ videography equipment, truly the Rolls Royce of the photog world. Leica has been the itch I never can scratch since I took Photography back in 83 in high school. I had a chance to shoot a few rolls of Kodak Black and White through a Leica just to see how I liked it and it was phenomenal. I can't even remember the designation for it now, been so long ago. All l knew then it was the Holy Grail and still is, and that I never became rich and famous and still am on a Pentax K1000 Budget. Photogs like yourself whom get to use all this wonderful equipment, I am quite frankly envious of you. I applaud you though for being able to work with all this equipment and the photos/ videos you get to shoot with it. I sure would love to be in your shoes. I still yet have an infinity for Black and White photography, and would love to be able to go shoot a ton of it, and I know today's cameras are more than capable, as long as that is programmed into the firmware.
Photography has come along way since I bought my first camera all those years ago. Good shooting.

In fact, you only need the price of a Nikon D5 or Canon 1D-X. Now, the Leica glass will cost (but Nikon's copy of the Leica Noctolux f 0.95 is around 8 grand...). BUT, Leica did create the L Alliance which, as a result, lets you use Sigma or Lumix glass for a much lower cost, and still give you excellent images.

Well, we knew this was coming as soon as I bought my SL in June. Right? Of course we did. As you know, my SL has had quite a workout in the 5 short months I've owned it. It's covered a lot of ground...literally. Thanks for the early and careful coverage of the upgrades. Here're a few thoughts. The improved weather sealing. Yes! And you know exactly why I say that. I like, really like, the 4 unmarked buttons on the back. Hate to see those go. The back is so clean. But, ok. The improved grip; are we sure we needed that? I haven't had an issue with the grip, but I'm game if it is indeed a value add. I only hope that it doesn't somehow muck up the aesthetics. Speaking of aesthetics, until I heard it here and immediately pulled mine from my bag to see for myself, I never - not once - realized that the covering didn't extend to the front. How the heck did I not notice? Thanks for saying you hadn't noticed, too. I took some comfort from that.
And now this, yes, I'm already casting out feelers for a trade-in. No surprise, huh? Wait. One more thing before I go. No, you do not have a CL. You had one. Past tense. Claudia has one. As always, cheers! Keep up the great work, man.

My question about this whole L mount thing is, do Sigma and Leica provide DFD profiles for their lenses? Does Panasonic engineer them for the other two manufacturers' lenses, or is it restricted to Panasonic branded glass like on MFT?
Most of the time it won't make a huge difference, but seeing the growing activity for the L mount makes me wonder how that'll all develop.
Also, the TL is definitely up there in terms of just beautiful body designs - would love to own one, but let's be realistic..

Professor Brownstone, I love attending your lectures. Thank you, once more.
I’d like to comment because I’m a professional marketer and artist, as well as, a budding pro photographer. I have a pulse on culture. I also, love luxury items that I can’t afford, for this argument, let me mention Porsche and Rolex.
No one on earth needs a Porsche for transportation or a Rolex to tell time. Yet they thrive in their markets. You know why, as I do, desirability, simple as that. As long as Leica keeps referencing themselves against “for the masses” competition it will be compared so.
Does Rolex compare themselves to Seiko or Apple Watch? It’s a fair argument that the completion is in a very measurable way, better. Maybe much better. As an Apple Watch is arguably better than a Rolex.
Leica needs to ditch the concepts of the ordinary and develop a discernible difference that makes it a Bugatti, instead of a utilitarian mode of transportation. If we use the same metaphor, it could a Range Rover. Or a Bentley. Or a Jeep. Doesn’t matter. But all those brands have specific niches and ride that understanding to amazing success.
Leica has heritage that only Nikon can maybe touch. But the Japanese brands are like Honda’s. Leica is a Porsche. Badass to the bone. And like a Porsche or a Rolex, you can actually beat on it. It’s not just a pretty item for display. We all want them because we have to have it.
Take the R and D funds and give it something “special”. Something the others will only wish they could have. They all take pics, but a Leica makes you a Rock Star!
The voices we hear are yours and your company of influencers. Anyone can say it’s “just a camera”. But you know the difference and so do they...
Leica, I wish you great success and indefinite longevity. (And I want one, badly. And will have one someday. Why? Just gotta have it.. ) Cheers...😎📷

Johannes R. H. Your point is correct and it could be anything else that makes a Leica special. But that’s just it, it still is special. If we continue the car analogies, many cars and watches and other luxury items are forgiven when they are flawed in any certain area, because what is “special” is still special even with the flaws. If the Leica was the only camera that existed we’d celebrate it with it’s own annual holiday. My point is, it’s good. Very good. Maybe great when taking all the factors into account. Build, handing, Herritage, performance and most of all pictures. The “drive experience” is unmatched with every Leica ever made, from the first through the SL2 and beyond. When you’re done using it, you can’t wait to go out again for another ride. The other “Honda’s”, get the job done. Think about that?? Really!! The amazing intangible factor of “desire”. How the heck does that enter into a product? Fairy dust? No. It’s a secret sauce that makes you stand out from the crowd. And it’s true with any aspect of life. A pretty view or person. A sports car. A luxury watch. Food, especially. A great bourbon. A kiss, that you’ll never forget. I don’t know about anyone else, but I want a kiss I’ll never forget. Even if it’s only once...🔥📷 For the record, my daily driver is a Honda, a Sony, two in fact. And they’re amazing at going from point A to point B. But the poster on my wall, and the screensaver on my computer, is a Leica. Cheers...🥃

Back in the old days, I used multiple Canon Speedlites before switching to Profoto. But no more: we work with available light only for the kind of street and photojournalism we shoot. Candidly, Leica has room to improve when it comes to functionality and compatibility with too many third party flash systems..

    • @bennettandyp
      @bennettandyp 4 роки тому

@@3BMEP I see your point about their willingness to participate with third-party manufacturers. Contrary to what I'm about to say, I'm not a gear guy. GFX shooter who fell into a nice array of Nissins. They work great for me. Completely reliable and I find myself NOT thinking about them when I work. I'd be more inclined to add the Leica to my shelf if Nissin made a compatible transmitter.
They are making it hard to be rational though. I held one in my hand at their Boston store! The "thingness" about it is not really explainable, but it's real. Coming from a guy who has never, not once, clicked the shutter release on a Leica before.

As you know, despite this whole video... As a luxury product, there will never be a compelling argument with regard to value for money or functionality compared with cheaper 'premium' competition. Attempting to do so is wasted time!
Comparing it to its sibling S1R or the far superior Sony A7RIV would be missing the point and is like comparing a Mercedes to a Rolls Royce... It's more than specs and a price tag, it's about emotion, effortless design, tactility, history, exclusivity and prestige.
No need to justify your desire to own one based on numbers. Just admit you want it because of how it makes you feel, buy it and love it.

But I am about to buy a Leica body, although I am thinking about M10, I like to manual approach... but I need to change my R-lenses to M... So I am willing to buy Summicron-M for the M10. But I'd like to use them on my Ursa aswell... question: good idea? what about the adapter I need (M to EF). And is the M series as soft and nice colour rendering as the R series? Is this something you can answer or give any insight? Thanks anyway.

How is high ISO low light performance compared to the Sl or Panny S1/S1R?

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 років тому

I'd expect it to be comparable to Q2 and S1R, slightly worse compared to S1 and SL because of pixel pitch/density. I haven't compared them side by side, though at base ISO (where I like to shoot) differences are likely to be minor. Check out DxOMark.com and photonstophotos.net for metrics. To me, other factors are far more important, like IBIS or UHD 10-bit 4:2:2/24p/ 8-bit 4:2:0 UHD up to 60fps internal recording.
In spite of what so many people say, color, dynamic range and resolution are sufficiently compromised by ISO 12,800 that the image will succeed or fail based on the composition, subject matter and emotional impact rather than any of these other factors irrespective of camera.

Martin Dewhurst GREAT question! Comparable at base ISO (both magnificent) but I think the SL2’s sensor outperforms the sensor in the X1D II at high ISO. I’d say the primary optical difference between the two systems is the look due to the difference in focal length for a given field of view.

Yes, I noticed. So, since the GFX 50 costs about 1500 Euro less than the SL2 and the GFX Glass costs about half for each lens I would say that the GFX is a huge bargain. On the other hand, the Leica SL2 looks to be the perfect camera in each and every way except the price, so if anything were to lure me away from Fuji APS-C as an "upgrade" to full frame- it would be this. Crucially, if you are spending that amount of money one must be satisfied that there is there will be no need to upgrade for 10-15 years at least. But that is exactly what the Leica SL2 seems to be. There is no need for faster Frame Rate, Autofocus or a better EVF because all of that seems to be perfect just as the image quality is.

Luis Carlos Pedrazzoli Aside from notions of character, and hands-on experience, I suggest you take a gander at the MTF charts - they tell an interesting if incomplete story. Instead of an articulating rear screen maybe some kind of attachment for an iPhone could be used for that. I have used the iPhone as a view screen, to fire the camera, when I had the camera on a tripod set lower than my arthritic knees could bend for me to reach the viewfinder. I was doing it for fun, at the Ironman in Kona, and captured a cyclist a cyclist at f1 and 1/16000 of a second. I prefocused a 50mm f/1.4 M lens in the midday sun. Fired remotely from my phone as instantaneous as pressing the shutter on the camera. Maybe I’m more tickled with the results than anyone else will be by looking at picture but that It is the kind of flexibility that the SL offers an M lens owner. The inspiring results have kept me from even selling one of my three M lenses for an auto focus lens. One thing I want to add about the high cost of the M lenses. Sure they cost more than my Nikon zooms and my Zeiss 100mm but the 7,000 dollars I paid for those three lenses is thrown away because they all have fungus which has made them worthless for resale.I had the M lenses for longer and exposed to the same Hawaii weather, from jungle to oceanfront and moist upcountry climate where I live, but none of the M lenses have any fungus at all and look brand new. They are still worth some money and will be worth the price for the next owner. As long as this sensor lasts I could see myself enjoying the SL for a long time. For the lenses I’m still looking for a graduated filter solution for landscapes. For macro I have used a set of three stacked macro filters that I bought for five bucks. I love the results. There is still more to learn every day and my thousands of dud pictures I don’t look at as mistakes anymore but rather experiments and fine tuning good results until I get exciting results. For weddings maybe manual is not great but for a retired guy who tries to get a picture everyday I’m very happy with the SL. I found that the Sony everyone raves about was just irritating to use with the auto white balance different from one shot to the next. It was too small and too flimsy. You get what you pay for but even with all that said I don’t see the Leica SL as priced low enough for the system to survive. I hope I’m wrong about that.

Someone pointed out to me that Leica was a luxury brand, and as an owner of a Leica Q I sort of agreed, yet basically took offense.
I think it boils down to this, as Hugh says in the video, “how it makes me feel when I hold it in my hand”.
As mentioned, the S1R is a completely competent camera at a substantial cost savings. I agree. If cost is what you value, then it’s the right one for you.
As for luxury I’d suggest, there are those who have the means and buy it because they believe the most expensive thing is the best.
Yet there are those of us with far less means who appreciate the point of difference and realize the value of what that piece delivers to you personally.
I loved my X100 but it pales in comparison to my Leica Q; that’s how Leica makes me feel.

Wow Hugh! You enthusiasm and bias are palpable. Your burning desire is testimony to the power of want over need. Proof that branding, done well, adds value that trancends the sum of it's parts. Leica is a famous historic brand that clearly speaks to and for you. Your emotional connection to the Leica brand is evident and will likely cost you dear - but then again, you can already, perhaps, justify that expense. Maybe already concluded that you are 'worth it'. You and your 'tribe' are a marketing man's dream. If you can afford it then why not? Mere logic can't trump emotion and you may as well have the satisfaction of owning and using what is undoubtedly a very fine tool.
I too love photography, spend thousands on premium kit (initially Nikon, now latterly Sony) and consider myself (financially) fortunate that I don't share your passion for Leica. But each to their own.
There are many illogical (yet emotionally justifiable) parallels in other sectors - like owning and driving a Porche or Ferrari. Sunseeker, Philippe Patek, Linn and other brands that thrive on their premium positions. Back in photography, I'm reminded that the more I charged my occasional clients the more they seemed to like my photography. Perception is reality.
