This is an absolutely informative session. Thank you so much Nick! One question about using M lenses on SL2: Will the general 0.7M MFD with M lenses stays the same or be much closer once used on mirrorless SL2?
I haven’t tried an SL lens but I’ve enjoyed my 35, 28, and 50mm M lenses so much that I haven’t wanted to try anything else yet. I’m 65 years old so my eyes aren’t very flexible anymore so the SL viewfinder and the zoom function get me more properly focused shots than I accomplished with the M camera. I have a Nikon camera and all of my high priced lenses, for the d800, have been ruined by fungus. Under the same conditions of humidity none of my M lenses have that issue so I want to tell people who decry the M lenses as being wastefully expensive that my experience has shown that after using them for years they are still worth most of the original purchase price, while my Nikon lenses are worthless. All in all the SL is my favorite camera that I have owned and I would recommend it to anyone.
Interesting - fungus resistant lens coatings! I live in Queensland, which is notorious for humidity, and none of my Leica lenses have ever shown fungus either - I used to use another brand and had the same problem as you,

Hi Thanks again. I like your videos. They are very informative. Amongst others how to clean my SL2 sensor. That helps me a lot. I have a question for you. I saw a 2 hour video of Leica Singapore with Peter Karbe lecturing on the lens build of SL2 lenses and was a bit surprised to hear Peter stating that M-lenses on the SL2 might work well but that you probably want to stop down Summilux lenses to 2.0 to get better rendering and sharpness. As an SL2 owner with a Lux-m-35 and 50mm ASPH, I was a bit confused to hear that. In other videos, the SL2 with m-lenses is very much promoted. My assumption is that the APO M lenses would have sufficient quality looking at the MTF charts to get the best out of the SL2. Wondering if you can do a video on this subject. Thanks! René
Hi Rene. I don't think any video I did could add anything to Peter's comments - he is the most knowledgable person I know on lens design. He is talking about super-fine detail captured by the 47MP SL2 compared to the 24MP M10. So it's reasonable to state that the 50mm Summilux will perform slightly better at f2.0 - the MTF charts show this on the 40LPM scale (micro contrast). However, in my experience the M lenses perform just fine, but maybe (with heavy pixel peeping) not at the widest aperture unless you use the APO-50mm or APO 35mm. Even my old 18mm Super-Elmar is fantastic at f5.6. I even have some vintage R lenses (1965 Elmarit 90mm) that stand up to use on the SL2, but you have to stop down a small amount.
Hi Nick, I am from germany and about to get my own sl2-s 😁. Thank you for your great video, best so far covering the aspect of using those wonderful m-lenses in combination with the capability of a sl2 based camera system. I know some of the old ones can be updated with a 6 bit code by leica (they just groove em in) but only for those with screwed on bayonets. Are there issues concerning IBIS for instance with those old m-lenses and can I find any old m-lense in the sl2-s menue when configuring manually without code connection or would I have to choose a similar newer version of that lens and it would work just fine then? So many questions 😬Thank you so much for your thoughts.
You can choose the lens from an internal menu (M and R lenses) if there is no 6-bit coding on the lens. You need to do this so the stabiliser works properly.
Hi Nick. Thanks for another useful video. I just attached my Summilux 50mm to my SL2 via this adapter. Although the auto mode in the lens profile chose the correct lens, the chosen aperture is not shown in the viewfinder, just a dash. Is this correct?
That's correct. The camera has no way to know what aperture you have set as there is no linkage. Interestingly, the metadata will show an aperture setting. There is a small light meter on the front, at the opposite end to the hand grip. This measures the light levels and makes an 'educated guess' of what the aperture would have been, based on your shutter speed and ISO. Clever!

I have been using g Voigtlander M lenses on my sl2S using focus peaking, which works when I set all the customer function ob . I guess I have to set it on a custom button. How is that done, Nick
All Custom Buttons work by long-pressing them and then setting their function. But I suggest you look at using different Info Views - there are four and you could set one to show only focus peaking.

I love Leica equipment but to be perfectly honest I did not find any of these images to be in sharp focus. And this has been my experience with other images I have seen online taken with manual focus lenses. What would account for this? I do see a lot of pictures on the internet that are very sharp . . . and I assume that the very large majority of them were taken with AF lenses. So is it in fact improper focus by the photographer using manual focus that accounts for the softness of images I almost always see when looking at images that were taken with MF lenses? I know from personal experience manual lenses can take extremely sharp pictures but I rarely see any when looking online. Any thoughts?
I am not sure what you are seeing when you say you notice the difference in sharpness between AF and MF images. You are looking at a low res video so judging absolute image quality is impossible. I assure you the the images from M lenses shown in this video are tack sharp, as are any other images taken on AF lenses. Without sending you a really big print you'll just have to take my word for it! 😁
I think there is a big market for a hybrid between SL and M cameras. The compact and the non-range finder hybrid will satusfy many photographers. I have M10-R to carry around but wish it had an EVF like SL. I do have Visioflex but it is not very good and feels outdated even though paid almost $800 ;( Also once it's on it covers the shutter speed dial info which makes no sense. Thank you for the video
I consider the SL2 with M lenses to be that camera. The SL2 is only marginally bigger than an M10, and the EVF is excellent. Or for 'small', consider the CL - it performs way beyond peoples' expectations.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Thank you. SL reminds me of DSLR cameras and looks a bit "ugly" lol, sorry but that's what i get by looking at it. CL never tried but cant step down after M10 i think. I just like M10 so much just wish Leica considered the current market and came up with a hybrid. All the SL guys with M lenses will jump on it. Looks like too many mix SL with M lenses already which is a big sign. Sorry don't want to sound negative. Thank you again. Big fun of your channel.
Does anyone has advice/ experience trying to mount a Voiglander M lens (non 6 bit) on the SL2? I am facing some problem with the camera trying to recognise the lens and render the camera not workable. I have tried to set the lens detection to off, but it keeps coming back again. thanks again if anyone can share.
If you choose a similar M lens focal length in the lens profiles the camera should work just fine. I do not have any non-M lenses to test this out unfortunately, but I do have some non-coded R lenses and they work fine.
Ooh, that's tough. The 50mm Nocti is quirky and full of character. The 75 and 90mm Noctis are more clinical but astonishingly sharp. I think the 75mm would be my choice,
In what sense is the SL2 not liking 'dumb' adapters? Is it to do with recognising the lens or something else? If you can share some more details I'll be happy to try and help.
I’m using an m42 dumb adapter no electronic connectors…. I’m using a Carl Zeiss Jena Pancola lens f1.7 and a Helios 44, look stunning on the Cl want to take it to full frame. On the CL Adaptor seems to work on the sl2s all screens black view finder and lcd… tried using camera settings and choosing closest m Mount lens no luck… Am I missing something
If the lens works on the CL it absolutely should work on the SL2S. Just one thing to try (long shot), turn off the stabiliser before changing lenses. The stabiliser likes to know what lens is being used. Otherwise I am stumped. There are plenty of manufacturers making M42/L adapters so clearly it should work. I don't have the gear to test this problem so I suggest a trip to a Leica Store.
Hi Chloe. I am simply discussing currently available products. Everything about the M-L adapter applies 100% to the SL. In fact the M-L adapter was released at the same time as the original SL and I have been using it with my M lenses ever since. If anything is being stressed it is that the M-L Adapter is currently available for free with purchases of the SL2 and SL2-S cameras. Apologies if it came across in any other way.
can I use this adapter for Lumix S1R L mount body, and using Leica M lenses(manual). In theory. It should be yes, but any issues causing problems in imaging.
I'm afraid i don't know. I do not have a S1R to try it on. In theory, yes...but I doubt it will pick up the lens in the metadata. This will affect the stabilisation.

@@LeicaCameraAustralia Thanks for your reply, appreciate it. And always feel free to "sending [me] a really big print" ! ;)
Which is your preferred Noctilux.. 75 or 50?
Ooh, that's tough. The 50mm Nocti is quirky and full of character. The 75 and 90mm Noctis are more clinical but astonishingly sharp. I think the 75mm would be my choice,
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Yes, I would agree.
how does it affect the weather sealing?
M lenses are not weather-sealed so whilst the camera will resist rain, the lenses will need to be treated carefully.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia yeah i thought so :) thanks for the heads up
@@LeicaCameraAustralia im thinking of getting the SL2 and M mount 50mm for daily carry camera
Not happy I want to use m42 mounts on my sl2s it does not like a dumb Adaptor but the Cl does why
One other thing - are you using M42-L Adapter or M42-M and an M-L Adapter? Combining dumb and smart adapters does not work.
That's good to know I'll give that a try..
Have Leica abandoned SL 601 owners now? Because in this video you stress the adapter is for the SL2 and SL2S cameras. Not great really.
