Chorus:
I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive
I was a sailor
I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still
I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around, I'll always be around and around and around and
Around and around
I fly a star-ship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again

My dear Mom would cry whenever she heard this song. She’ll be gone 24 years this November. I miss her every day ❤️
Anytime I stray, this song brings me back. No judgement, no guilt, just truth.
Thanks Kris for quite possibly the best gospel song ever!
Is anyone else brought to tears by this incredible performance by Kris Kristofferson?

Most beautiful rendition. I have been & still am a great fan of Kris. Actually I saw him in concert many years ago in Brisbane Aust.
Elvis in 74 Memphis concert.. Find it
@@kriskristofferson2831 Hi Kris, I have been trying to reply to your email of 6 months ago but I am not familiar to hangout but hope this reaches you. My name is Narelle Dearden.
@@narelledearden1189 Kris Kristofferson is an oxford educated man, even in his 80's i think his english would be better than what is above. i could be wrong, but i dont think that is the man himself replying. i have gotten similar replies on a different song of his, and broken hard to understand english is the common denominator. with a 1 number different email addy. it just doesnt seem right.
I BELONG TO JESUS.....HE IS MY LORD!!! I LEFT VIETNAM IN 1974
I am sorry, I am a Vietnamese woman. I have great respect for the Vietnam Veterans because the soldiers used to come to my orphanage and treated us really well. I was sad when they had to go home. I am a no body special either.
@@nealhanlen1362 I'm sorry for the mix up. I know that civilians had a terrible time as well. I hope life is good for you. God bless you
@@nobodyspecial6513 Don't be sorry, I should have made it clearer. God has given me a new country and family and very grateful for everything. Life has not been easy but, with Jesus as my Lord, I have hope. I believe Jesus returning soon to take the believers home. Thank you for your understanding. Jane.
These so called country singers of today, can take some well deserved advise from these legends.
How are you doing
Like Beyonce? She may be singing, but not country. Let's hear her sing about Jesus.
When you become a Christian, you are not perfect, but forgiven by Jesus, who is perfect...& our Judge.
Song in a bar, a church, anywhere,it means the same and sounds so beautiful.
KK is one of America's greatest song writers.
A complete a treasure and a genius
Thank you for this tribute to our veterans..Love this song.
I didn't think I could love KK more, but when he dedicated this song to Vietnam Vets, that did it. To the moon and back, KK.
I love this song. No better way to express what we all take for granted. God bless you Kris. :-)
Why is there not a billion likes?
Kris' story on how he came to write this song really touched me.
This song makes us all think of god who gave us this great band. They will live in are hearts forever.❤
This song and Sunday Morning Coming Down are two of the best songs ever written. This is what good music really is.
And Kristofferson wrote them both
So right my friend I can't stop listening and crying
i just found sunday morning coming down today and it made my day :) GOOD music is hard to find today :)
Kristofferson - genius - For me a tribute to an older Classmate named George Swerbinsky - a brilliant, kind, and handsome young man lost to that unnecessary war. He came back 'lost' and then died young. I ran into him when I first moved home and spoke with him at length at a local bar/restaurant. He was mature - extremely intelligent. My heart aches for those who lost their lives or died young from the horror they had to endure. George died at 56 years old in his home town - working on
family farms. People of the earth - yet, he was a top notch student known for his great intellect, great character, and handsome without knowing it. Had he not been 'punished' with the Draft, he would have lived the life of many his age - Scientist - comes to mind when I think of George. Great Ambassador as well. So humble. A natural educator on any topic. Crying in the rain -
One of the songs I want played at my memorial service
A Beautiful Song. Not bad having Willie, Waylon and Johnny as your backup singers
This video cuts off too quickly. The dvd captures the full audience response to this beautiful and heartfelt song. The applause goes on and on, including from the other three guys and the entire band, until Kris is actually biting his lip to keep from crying and is looking over to Waylon, who is due to sing next, to get him to rescue him. Waylon clowns around as he starts the intro to "Lukenbach, Texas" to give Kris time to compose himself. Now that's a friend. Kris and Waylon considered themselves to be the foot soldiers of the outfit and John and Willie to be the generals.
This is the last song of every Kris Kristofferson concert and it comes from deep in his heart. Let me add that he probably has the highest IQ of any recording artist still alive. Quite a guy!
@Bruce Kuehn both Kris and Johnny had genius-level measured IQs. Kris’ IQ is documented at 163 and Johnny’s is documented at 160. Kris is a Rhodes Scholar who studied at Oxford University in the United Kingdom and he gave up a teaching position at the West Point Military Academy to become a musician. Johnny is even more remarkable given that he grew up very poor in a small cotton farming community (he lived in a house that had no electricity, no running water, and no indoor plumbing); he picked cotton from 5 years old until 18 years old; he only had a High School diploma and never went to college or university; he started writing poems at 12 years old and wrote over 1,000 songs himself over his lifetime; and he became very well-read on a number of subjects that included history, literature, music, theology, and the Bible - he owned an extensive library of books and is known to have read books extensively and continuously, even when on tour. In addition to being very close friends, great songwriters/performers/entertainers, and amazing musicians, Kris and Johnny were very highly intelligent men.
@@msuddie1237 I didn’t know that about Mr Cash. They both had weaknesses too of course that caused problems in their lives, but who doesn’t?
God Bless the Veterans and the Highwaymen.
God bless everyone who lives their life in a good way
for me they are the best ❤️ and I also know they got along well with each other, a friendship forever !!
Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I've known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving you
Or the kindness you've shown.
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I've need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.
Tell me Lord, if you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from you
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you.
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I've need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand
Thank you Lord for Kris, what a great and humble man of God, the Lord bless your soul 🙏🏻

Es extraordinario como autor, compositor y lo que más le honra... es que es una excelente persona..

...Now that I know that I've needed you so...
Hello how are you
All 4 went thru hard times
This song bring a tear to the eye. Its so heartfelt.❤❤❤😊
I would understand if Kris started to cry there 2:58
What a beautiful song and man.
You should see the full performance on the live DVD. UA-cam only shows part of the applause and Kris's response. By the end, he is pressing his lips together hard to keep from sobbing.as the audience remains on its feet and his 3 fellow Highwaymen and the entire band are applauding. He is a very emotional man. When he spoke at Johnny Cash's funeral, he could barely keep it together.
Gosh he's well just brilliant
Listening this morning what a privilege
Look up the dictionary definition of ‘powerful’. An amazing songwriter, and a credit to the United States of America. The American dream in a nutshell (with a little bit of a good ol’ fashioned Oxford education). Not biased in the slightest.
I would have loved to see these guys in person. I could die happy. Love 💕 them all so much!!
Simply beautiful... 😊🙏
El mejor country del mundo gracias 🙂
Watch the video of the 'Why Me Lord Story - told and sung by Kris Kristofferson' posted by Jerry L. Farris. It will make you cry.

Awesome job Kris
Thank you❤😊
Such a loss
We come to realize that the Image and Likeness of "God" that Christianity instructs about lies within the recognition and refinement of the interpersonal psychological reality we share as "ONE-Group-Spirit-Soul." We are not separate. We refine ourselves out of what Christianity refers to as the condition of "Origional Sin." Once the majority of this is done within ourselves we realize what is called the "Peace that Passes Understanding" or "Garden of Eden Consciousness." Up until now, this has not been for busy worldly people. Up until now, this has taken a person years to recognize, understand, and refine our individual and collective interconnected psychological reality that shows our connection to everything after a "ground floor enlightenment." There are now insights popping up to help everyone "expedite" our understanding and ways of being to more fully know and share our loving Nature.
OMG Amem!!
At the time of this video .. I think Johnny was 58 Willie 57 Kris 54 and Waylon 53
