    VIDEO DESCRIPTION
    Preparations for my first solo photography exhibit (starting September 15th at Casa Romantica in San Clemente, CA) continue moving forward. I've finally picked out all of the prints I plan to show and I have the files ready for my printing house to get started.
    This step of the process was difficult for a fella like myself who can't even decide what he wants for dinner half the time. Which photos to display, what sizes to make them, what framing styles to do...it's a whole lot of "well that would look good. But so would that. Oh and that too. But which one is best? Shit... Well, I guess I'll just commit to this decision for 8-10 hours and then completely doubt everything about myself before changing my mind."
    29 photographs. That's how many I'll be displaying at this exhibit. 4 will be C-Type prints on Fuji Crystal Archive paper while the remaining 25 will be pigment prints on Hahnemuhle photo rag paper. A got a couple of different framing styles to work with, too.
    Despite the tediousness and indecision of this step of the process, I'm f'ing stoked ("he's from California, you say?") to be doing this. My excitement is building big time. Not only for opening night of my first solo photography exhibit, but for that deep satisfaction I know will wash over me upon seeing all my prints framed up. Because truly...there is nothing more rewarding in photography than seeing your images in print hanging on the wall.

    Are you sure the gallery will allow you to use glass? Many galleries only allow acrylic glazing due to liability insurance clauses (I found this the hard way). You should look into TruVue Optium Museum Acrylic - same as museum glass (non-reflective, 99% UV protection, no "warming" effect on the print's colors), but it is lighter than glass and break resistant.

    • @silekiernanphotography
      @silekiernanphotography Рік тому +3

      @olivier_desmet He may well be using TruVue, I know he has in the past. TruVue often refers to its museum-quality product as glass.

      Isn't Tru Vue Optium Museum Acrylic *a lot more* expensive than AR Reflection-Free glass?

    • @nickcarverphoto
      @nickcarverphoto  Рік тому +3

      @@cliftonwhittaker260 “UltraVue” glass is typically what I use because it has the same anti-reflective properties as Museum Glass but for quite a bit cheaper. Only drawback is it has 70% UV blocking instead of 99%.

    I actually just decided to move forward with Hahnemühle Metallic Satin for my latest prints. My local printer wasn't getting the results I wanted from Photo Rag and the Satin variant had just enough diffusion to convince me. I'm really happy with the results, but understand why you chose not to. Under the right lighting (where it doesn't produce any reflections), I think the additional contrast makes the Metallic Satin a homerun.

    Check out hahnemuhle albrecht durer paper. Just made an expo for my wife 25 A2 pictures. We did not use glass at the end, but Hahnemühle Varnish, matt not gloss and the pictures are well protected for scratching and UV. We are selling them. If the buyer wants glass.. its on his expence.

    It's not just hawk feathers that are illegal to possess. The Migratory Bird Act of 1918 makes it illegal to possess any bird parts from migratory and indigenous birds. The reason is that at the turn of the 19th to 20th Century, we were decimating the snowy egret population (as well as other birds) to use their feathers for hats and other adornments. I've talked with a number of Wildlife Department people and "possession" means picking up a feather among other things. I used to collect feathers I'd find in my yard around my bird feeders but I've had to stop doing that. I especially had to quit photographing bird feathers as fine art (dang it!). Nonindigenous birds such as pheasants are excluded from the law as are pet birds like certain parrots. About four years ago I was going to display a number of feather prints at an art show but I heard about a mixed-media artist who got all of her work confiscated and she had to pay a hefty fine for including Blue Jay feathers in a piece of art work. She found a dead bird in her yard and decided to save its feathers. Don't make a costly mistake like her!

    Hi Nick, first of all good luck on the exhibition. My wife and me are travelling over to L.A. in Sept, so it is lucky that we can possible get to see it. We are popping over from the UK to watch our son playing in the Hollywood Bowl on the 20th. Will you be at the exhibition on any dates at all, other than the opening of course. Would love to meet you if that was possible.

    Putting together a one person art show is a tremendous amount of work and expense. And then there is the logistics of transportation, hanging and labeling the pieces so they look their absolute best in the gallery. But, if you think you are excited about the show now, wait until the grand opening. Nothing more exciting that the opening reception. Meeting and greeting; shaking hands and making new friends and, hopefully, collectors of your work. Make sure there is plenty of wine before they start viewing your work to loosen the purse strings. And if you could pay your bills with the compliments you receive about you beautiful as they sip your wine and eat your food you would be a rich man. It is exhilarating and exhausting and great high. But there comes the day when the show is over and it is time to take down the work, pack it up, transport it home and find a place to store what was left of it. That is the letdown. That's when you begin to wonder what you are going to do with these leftovers and can you find another gallery to show and, hopefully, see them. But, you won't have to worry about that. Your show will be a sellout the first night and all you'll have to do is go home and count your money. I hope that's true and I wish you the best of luck with a great experience, Nick. I'll be looking forward to keeping up with this. BTW, I've had great results with fine art photography using Breathing Color Pura Color Velvet paper in floating frames. The colors and tonal values are beautiful and there is absolutely no reflectance or sheen of any kind. If you get the light right you can even see some of the texture of the paper. And no, I don't have any connection to this company at all other than using their product at full price.

Great for us not so great for you! 😁 And it is so satisfying seeing your art go from negative through to framed piece. My first job after graduating art school was at a gallery as a high end framer.
