    The film changing tent you see me using in this video can be found here: bhpho.to/2sYLcdB
    2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 2 sausage for $6.50? What a deal! You know what makes it even better? This video. Watch it while you eat. Don't just feed your stomach, feed your insatiable hunger for more photography while you're at it.
    This little breakfast joint resides in an area of Orange County that's going through some gentrification. I assume it's only a matter of time before they plow this thing down to make way for more high-density apartments. LUXURY apartments. Or perhaps a shiny new industrial building with a blue glass and reclaimed wood exterior.
    Whatever may take the place of this building someday, I don't want to miss the opportunity to photograph it now in all its 2019 glory. So I took my Shen-Hao HZX-45IIa 4x5 camera out on a Sunday morning to capture this puppy on film. I was loaded for bear with several sheets of Kodak Portra 160 (and a couple sheets of Fuji Provia 100f). I ended up using my Rodenstock 115mm lens for a composition that I struggled a bit to find.
    The building didn't have much in the way of accent lighting, but that turned out okay. With minimal artificial lighting, I was able to capture this charming breakfast cafe while it was asleep - nothing more than a splash of rising sun in its eastward-facing windows. And, if I'm really putting it all out there...I actually went back another day during business hours to photograph it with the lights on. I just couldn't resist the temptation of seeing how it looked with some light. But I found out pretty quick that shooting it when the restaurant was closed certainly was the right call. With all the lights on, it just looked too alive. Plus it was a bit of a zoo dealing with customers' cars, food delivery trucks, and relentless road traffic. This Sunday morning outing gave me the better photos.
    I ran into my usual slew of challenges like composing the photo in the dark, factoring in reciprocity failure, and some unexpected lens flare. But hey, at least a big rig didn't park in front of me.
    Thanks for watching. Enjoy!

    Nick, you are a visual historian. Capturing iconic buildings of a United States I grew up on as a British kid in the 1970’s. You are so right, 10 or 20 years from now people will see this photo and the prices on the windows and reminisce on times past and how cheap the food was. The irony wasn’t lost on me seeing the old and the new on opposite sides of the street with Amazon behind you showing the future and the past straight in front of your camera. What you are doing is important because all these building you photograph will be relics of the past and capturing them before they are gone forever is a noble gesture and a nod to the way things were. Happy New Year to you and your family. Good to see the beard back. The moustache just wasn’t right. I know, I’ve tried it.

    • @nickcarverphoto
      @nickcarverphoto  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for the kind words, Simon. With the rate old buildings are torn down around here in Southern California, I feel almost an anxiety to get out and record them before that happens. And I agree about the beard. Couldn't get used to the mustache.

    If I get back over your way in the near future I will do the same, but I think time is running out. I watch a show called American Pickers. They go around buying junk from old guys who collect gas pumps, old cars, bikes, signs and anything from the past in order to preserve it. It may be junk to most, but to them it’s like gold. It got me hooked. I love old gas stations way out West. I can see what a great job you are doing recording these architectural gems of an age where the US was booming. You are documenting American culture through its buildings. Shooting your subjects on film pays homage to that time. Seeing your images makes me want to just step through the photos to the time when these run down old buildings were in their heyday. A UA-camr in Arizona did a video on a Mall from the 80’s that’s deserted and due for demolition. He used to go there as a kid with his friends. I think he said he is going back to document it properly before they pull it down. Those early mornings may be hard for you to get out of bed, but we all really appreciate your commitment and great attention to detail.

    Lap up all those oldies but goodies my friend. Watching your videos and listening to your take on some of these places has really changed the way I look at these old properties. I used to say: "Man, that place is falling apart. Those people should clean that shit up" or "Sketchy man, sketchy".
