Hey, ‘member that print I made of the Joshua Trees in fog? I had it framed and stuff. ‘Member? No? Your life doesn’t revolve around my UA-cam videos? Okay, fine. Well, I made a print awhile back and I filmed the process for UA-cam. In this video I’ll be making 4 new prints in that same style - pigment prints on Hahnemühle photo rag paper framed in a shadow-box style.
I took these 4 photos in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. They were shot with my Mamiya RZ67 and a 6x6 back on Ilford Delta film pushed 2 stops with a red filter. That means they are f’ing contrasty and grainy. They also have some light leaks for those extra hipster points. These photos are like Johnny Cash - gritty, rough, and dressed in black.
The negatives were scanned on my Epson V750 using an inverted fluid mounting station from betterscanning.com. It creates superior results over regular fluid mounting, but to be honest, I have no idea if that place is still in business. SilverFast Ai Studio ran the scanner and SilverFast HDR handled the processing along with Photoshop and Lightroom. The gorgeous print work was done by my peeps at Pro Photo Connection here in California (www.prophotoconnection.com). They ship all over the place, so give ‘em a try. And the framing was done by the always reliable Salamon Art in Fountain Valley (www.salamonart.com).
If you’re in the San Diego area, visit Harland Brewing Company (www.harlandbeer.com) at 4112 Napier Street to check out these prints in person and enjoy a pint. Hey! Prints and pints! Man I’m coming up with all sorts of cute phrases in this video. By the way, they have a Japanese Lager that is so damn good.
So there you have it. From RZ67 to Ilford film to Hahnemühle paper to frame to rad brewery to your eyeballs. I hope you enjoyed coming along for the process.
Thanks for watching!

My apologies to anyone who received a comment reply from "me" telling you to buy bitcoin or some other nonsense. That wasn't me but some spammer. I'm working on getting their account taken down.
Lol I was a bit confused at first, as this isn't my native language I thought I misunderstood something.
I founded kInd of strange...at first sounded serious but I knew something was wrong...
I was confused by your strange bitcoin advice mate lol 😂
I bought some.
@@paultaylor5513 Too funny.
Any day a new Nick Carver video is released is a good day. You are by far my favourite photographer to watch on youtube!
As ‘they’ say, this!
This! Ditto
I agree
couldn't agree more.
This is one of his best videos yet.
Totally agree! Great shots great process entertaining yet professional. Nick is so easy to relate too I'd like to go for a beer with him!
@@philhasacamera Me too. I don't watch a lot of this channel. This guy reminds me a little of Steve Mathies. I think Steve was some kind of engineer once. A couple of smart guys who are interesting(well, I guess smart guys just always are interesting). I was thinking I would hand deliver those. No shipping, no matter how much insurance.
yes..
This video reminds me of Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
Yo Nick, you're something else. The OG. The granddaddy purp. The man, the myth, the legend. Photography doesn't get much more inspiring than seeing you get excited about your craft. Giving me the urge to go shoot right now. Thank you for your hard work putting these long vids together. Props.
Haha - love it. Thanks, my friend.
I've cancelled my Wednesday appointment with my shrink. This is all the therapy I need for the week.
From brain to frame. Brilliant!
I got emotional when I saw the prints on the brewery’s wall. You captured so well the essence of creating art in your video. Thank you for your mastery of the art of storytelling.
Thank you 🙏🏼
And here I was thinking I was the only one.
There’s few ‘insta-click’ channels on UA-cam for me; this is one of them - great video.
Your videos are some of the best . . . Approachable, informative, creative and pro . . . All the things I need to get my creative juices flowing.
The quality of storytelling is off the charts here. Seeing something so thoroughly through to completion is a pure joy to watch.
I will be honest, at the beginning of your video I did connect with these pictures, the main reason is that I am not a big fan of cactus, but when I saw them framed and hanged! Wow, I was astonished! You clearly did an amazing job. Great video too and good luck with these house problems of yours.
Lol. Man that is the plot to every home renovation show on HGTV. Start with a simple project and end up rebuilding half the house.
Who thinks this man should have his own TV show? I would be all in!
@@wylie_photo just imagine what nick could do with a real tv series budget. 😀
Printing… so important! I’m “only” a digital photographer, but get the same completion joy for the prints I choose to frame..
Love this channel! Thanks Nick.
I have a super small 4x6 printer and even seeing my stuff printed to that size has completely changed my view of my own work. I love printing my stuff now, its fun!
I wish I found you on UA-cam years ago.... I got my first camera when I was 8 yrs old and waited because of family situations to try to get back into photography last year... thanks to covid I had to sell my brand new photography equipment so I could keep roof over my head. In the upcoming weeks I plan on buying equipment again... By the way I'm turning 61 in August... Like you said, it's time to bring my idea's for photo's to print. Thank you for showing me a video reminder of what matters...
From brain to frame. That is perfect. That is exactly how I feel when I produce my work. Great video...again.
Does it get more satisfying than that... Just one successful set like that would make all the wondering before it meaningless. But what's most important and under appreciated is the vision and conceptualization that grew out of a simple desert search.
Nick Carver updated new videos, Warriors won the game, what a day.
You can always tell who's a photographer looking at prints. They are the only ones who go right up to a print to look at the detail. Another great video.
Great seeing the "ordinary" guy behind you. Takes a lot to show things you're not satisfied with in the midst of the social media area where everything has to be perfect. Its refreshing Nick! As always a pleasure. And keep em coming!
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Great seeing those print up on the wall, I loved you talking about looking at prints really close up as in the past I used to large format screen printing for advertising and we ”You will never see imperfections on the side of a bus” if you looked at the 4 colour screen printing close up you would see lots big dots making up the image (a bit like a Lichtenstein print) most big prints are looked at further away than most people think.
Pixel pepping only lead to madness.
Great work Nick keep it up.
Another Gem of an episode 👍
Prints looked Great as a series of four or Five.
And Great on the wall
Float framing is Cool 👌
Love those floating prints, gorgeous
I tend to queue up a bunch of vids and watch/listen to them at 2X speed, except when Nick uploads...I return the speed back to normal and simply enjoy...
A picture of a bush in the desert with a light leak. A throw-away photo for most photographers, yet you made a work of art out of it. WOW. I will have to visit the brewery and give your art a toast. Very cool storytelling journey.
Thank you, sir!
Great video like always. This past weekend I received my first print of a remodeled theater here in West Texas, the Ector Theater. I will honestly say that having it on print creates such a unique sensation about the photo, I stared at it for a good while, absorbing the image, remembering the time I took that photo, the satisfaction I felt when I received the print… it’s priceless. Now it’s on a frame on my desk at work. I feel bad to say that I have it on a cheap frame I got from Hobby Lobby. after watching this video, I will definitely invest in a professional frame, the Theater deserves it… my photo deserves it.
I was at Harland Brewing in San Diego. I looked at Nick's photos. The photos are really great. Good job. They look great on the wall. Thanks, Nick
Really beautiful work Nick. From brain to frame.
Nick - I just re-re-re-watched this video-. Boy you are so right about this "brain-to-frame" thing. Besides, your ocotillo shots are genius. When the US opens its border again next month, I will load my camera gear into my Jeep and no desert scenery in the West will be safe again! And if this goes well, maybe I will visit that brewery in San Diego just to gaze at your prints (and sample some of their brews!). I can't wait.
Proud to say I've watched every second of this, and I agree, we should print our photos more often. Recently, I've printed more of my photos in C-Type at A2 standard size, and framed them in some cheap frames I could afford. The feeling of seeing a photo I've shot in a frame is much much different than staring at it on a 13" MacBook screen.
As a neuroscientist I love the "brain-to-frame" concept. Pure genius.
Just outstanding. Loved to follow this from print to display.
FROM BRAIN TO FRAME!
That was a fantastic journey you have just taken us on! Your comments at the end regarding the satisfaction of printing & Framing your work is very real. In Feb 2020 I did a photography trip to the Lofoten Islands in Norway from here in Australia (YES it IS a VERY VERY Long way!). I had 4 images printed and framed, I look at them every day hanging on the hall in my home, & remember the exact time I took the image and the work that went into capturing through to hanging the prints. It's a unique experience indeed Nick. I would do more BUT!.... lack of wall space and objections from my good wife prevent me from doing more except if I get an order for a print. (RARE!). Love your channel!! Cheers from Australia🇦🇺
This is it. From 0 to finished framed piece of art. Hard , expensive but satisfying as hell work.
Its amazing how Nick and his videos rise my enthusiasm to higher levels each time. Great work, amigo.
And this video for me especially. Do you know the channel adventure and art? Its too a very inspiring, motivating and mysterious vibe Ben is creating in his videos.
congratulations! these prints in their frame look simply fantastic, excellent job!
Another great video, Nick. I can relate to not wanting every image on the walls of your space. After 40 years of photography, I have 3 images I hang in my house. One from Seattle, one from Europe and one from Maine. People think I have images hanging everywhere and they are shocked that I don't. Keep up the good work. Love the images by the way.
And that's 40 years of refining your taste for prints.
Excellent!!! Beautiful pictures, well framed, well exposed!
The closing sequence is a touching masterpiece for anyone who is in love
with his craft. Thanks for that.
Thank you, my friend.
I agree 100% about printing. you have to print! They don't have to be fine art quality, you just need to be able to touch them. I develop and scan my 35mm and 120 using Negative Supply gear and my Sony A7Riii. Then I convert and edit them with Negative Lab Pro and Lightroom/Photoshop. I also print the digital stuff I like. I go through my edits once every couple of months, pick my favorites, and submit an order to Mpix. Most everything is standard 4x6 for my personal photo albums.
It's such a great feeling to see my photos in albums, and my friends, family, and clients like it too. Don't just relegate your work to Instagram. Print!
I too know the “brain to frame” feeling and it certainly is a feeling of accomplishment.
Nick I will say it again, you are a true artist. Your eye for detail is amazing.
From Brain to Frame; that's a show I would never miss! Nothing beats a great print, will have to check out that brewery one day.
Great video of an artist at work with all of the picky details and insanity it takes to get a final product like what Nick produced here. But... from about 28:00 on that's about the finest explanation of what I feel when I see something I shot hanging on a wall. Why I keep banging away. Why I sit on the floor and stare at the work when I see the finished product. Wow. I couldn't (and haven't) ever expressed it as articulately or well myself. Thanks for the how-to, but even more, thanks for the thoughts.
One word Nick. AWSOME.
You’re one talented man. Appreciate your work.
Thanks for another excellent video. Its hard to believe its six years since the original image was taken.
Hello nice to see you back and doing good 😎😎😎😎😎Holy 🦀 your prints are beautiful 😎😎😎
I just want to let you know that every time you drop a new video is a great day!
Always a great day when there's a new Nick video
Brilliant...Art Masterpieces...well done Nick! Cheers...
I did not expect to be so touched by this. I was smiling through the whole video haha, definitely one of your best. Almost a philosophical journey.
Thank you very much
Be proud man - they look great.
Photography - digital or analog - is useless without printing.
Always willing to wait, for as long as it takes, until Nick brings us another gem. My day: made.
Oh, I'm going there next week to enjoy the beer and see your photographs in person. Can't wait...
You deserve all the accolades for such wonderful work Nick. Simply awesome 😎👌
New @NickCarver and @GrainyDays videos on THE SAME DAY? The universe is lining up, people.
Beautiful video, Nick...really highlighted the reasons why many of us have embraced the art of photography. Congratulations on the commissioned work...very well deserved. I hope you get over the 'separation anxiety'. :)
Your artful video capture and production here are testament to love you display for your craft, and the joy you bring to clients and the fortunate fans who follow you. Thanks Nick.
Really enjoyed this one Nick! Great to see your process and definitely helpful to apply to my own work!
Its called life which is what happens while your busy doing something else , always look forward to your videos no matter what they are, love the analyses of sharpness of the print, the finished product looks so good. There is something special about getting the work to this point in the real world unfortunately so many people,e don't do it , having grown up with analog im constantly printing and making g sketch books - small prints at least its very satisfying
Thanks Nic, feeling your pain with the messy garage. take us along for the ride when you do your new office. Loving the prints, the process and final result. From brain to frame indeed.
Such nostalgia, Nick! Joshua Tree was one of the first videos I watched from you. Always admired your work, man.
Awesome as always. Worth waiting on for sure.
Very very very nice !! Great shots! Inspiring!
Ohh man. You’re the man in business 🙏😊 it’s always a pleasure to watch your videos and how well you do with visual narratives. Once again I really appreciate it your contribution, guidance and hard work to guide so many out their. 🙌👍
Thanks for sharing Nick 🙏
Sorry my friend but that was a spam bot impersonating me. Thank you for the kind words!
@@nickcarverphoto mama Mia.... 🤦♂️🙏thanks for prompt response.
the prints look absolutely stunning on that wall!! If I ever pay them a visit it will be first and foremost to see those pictures. I might also try their beer.
They're timeless Nick. These will look awesome in 200 years from now - true artist 👌🏼
Wonderful experience Nick, congratulations.
Great video as usual. I’m getting my TON’S IQ print framed this week. Cheers Nick! Will send you a shot once it’s done.
Yes! That's awesome!
Awesome Nick! Those look fantastic!
Another great video and fabulous prints.
YES cant wait for this one, love the print making aspect of this channel almost as much as the "on location"
Props to your storytelling skills. And of course, the pieces look incredible!
Class! That half hour went by very quickly. Great video, fantastic prints.
Nick, I’m new to your channel and have really enjoyed your perspective on film photography. Seeing your workflow has been inspiring and I am looking through my thousands of images with new eyes. Maybe some of my pictures are good enough to hang on my walls. Thanks for the great videos.
Nick, one thing I've learned, one thing always leads to another. And it costs you more and takes longer to do than you planned.
This made my day. I think i can speak for all of your fans, that even if it takes a bit longer for the next video of yours to come out. It is always worth the wait. Thank you so much for your work and showing it to us all.
Those prints looked awesome in those frames. Superb video as usual.
Hey man. Those prints turned out ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! You're right Mr Carver, whenever I print my work, it just means so much more. "From brain to frame" is going to be my working motto from now on ;-)
New Nick's video. I hit like, take a good cup of coffee, hit play and enjoy the next half hour...
Ohh Man! What a good work. Amazing Prints, so damn good. 😮❤
Wow, they are stunning. I have been taking photographs for years and will share many of them, mainly electronically and have had people offer to pay me for prints and the request always embarrasses me for some reason and I never do it. This video has made me rethink that and wonder if I'm not making a mistake in not turning some of the photos I'm the most proud of into tangible prints. Not that I have anything on the level that you do, but it may still be interesting what they would look like properly printed and framed. Awesome video and you have every right to be proud.
One of my favorite
I'm watching this video while in the process of preparing my first art print for a gallery and this video was so informative and inspiring about the process of printing. Well said Sir! "From Brain to frame"
You are a brilliant educator, thank you.
Love the idea of including the film board, so creative.....
That is one FINE collection of framed art!
Some photographer that lives in KSAN, "might" just show up, loupe in hand. ;) You never know.
My first real job, back in the day, working under that red Pegaus.
Beautiful inspirational work Nick! I have only printed a couple of my images but I could really feel your excitement when you opened these prints up!
Such a great insight into the amount of attention to detail it takes to produce real art. Fantastic work!
You inspired me and I just found your channel! Thank you. I just got a cover of a international magazine this week. You gave me the sense to print this image. I'm gonna blow it up and frame it! Following you now. Keep it up! I love the way you talk us through it.
"From brain to frame" :-D I just laughed out loud when seeing you look "real close" at the proof print. But honestly: This was a real inspiring video. Thanks for sharing your work.
Best regards from Sweden.
Great video Nick, always excited to get your notifications for a new video. I really felt your excitement when unwrapping your prints. I haven't sold any large framed prints since lockdown a year ago. You have released my creative juices to the point that I am about to start making smaller framed prints for my own walls and family or friends (or sell).
One of my favorite videos ❤️thank you🙌
Great vid. The digital mockups are such a good idea. I don't know why I haven't done that before. The timing of this video was perfect. I had a client interested in two large prints and a couple of mockups sent over email sealed the deal.
Hi Nick, the prints look awesome and they are a perfect match for that wall. Your attention to details is really remarkable and I love that.
Totally agree on what you say about printing, I do as much as I can.
Fantastic, it really is so enjoyable seeing your work printed. It makes such a big difference. And we are sadly so used to looking almost everything from the screen of our phones. Beautiful video and beautiful images!!
You’re a unique talent Nick. Your vids are exemplary.
