- There are two types of sentences in Arabic, nominal sentences and verbal sentences. This video lesson covers the nominal sentence structure.
A nominal sentence is one that starts with a noun or pronoun, not a verb. It is composed of two parts, the subject and the predicate.
The subject is known as مبتدأ (mubtada). It is the part of the sentence that we are talking about or describing. The mubtada is usually the first word of the sentence, coming before the predicate. It must be definite, whether this be a definite noun, proper noun, or pronoun. Sometimes the mubtada is implied rather than stated explicitly. In this case, the khabar may provide enough information for the listener or reader to infer what the mubtada is. However, this is not within the scope of this video which covers the basic nominal sentence structure.
The second component of the nominal sentence is the predicate, which is the khabar خبر in Arabic. The khabar is literally translated to mean the news or information, this is because the khabar provides information about the subject, completing the meaning of the sentence. It can be a noun, adjective, nominal sentence, verbal sentence, or quasi phrase.
The mubtada and khabar always agree in gender and number. Learn more by completing the video lesson.
