I started just before covid at the age of 35 and was at about 1000p of Orks. The hobby really opened up for me when I found a local gaming club in germany. I quickly finished my 2000p to participate in Tournaments. At the Tournament I played people from all ages. My first oponent was nearly 70 years old, my second was 15 and my third was around mid 40's (didnt ask him). I even finished at top 20 from 60 people. That was the point when I knew this hobby will last me for the rest of my life. Even my girlfriend was so intrigued that she started painting alongside me and is close to finishing her first Combat Patrol.

I started with warhammer about 18 months ago, I'm in my 50's. I started reading the books, I bough the leviathan box in August 23 and started painting, I'm only 25 models in, each model is taking about 10 days now, each one seems to take longer as strive for better paint jobs. buying all the paints, getting airbrush and other supplies cost quite a bit but all told, as I paint so slowly its a pretty cheap hobby. I live in London so my total spend is about 2 or 3 meals out. When I complete the armies I'm already planning a table/terrain build... Then I have to find someone to play a game with, Maybe 2026?

I owe a lot to warhammer. The past year has been rough for me, I lost things that I took for granted and a lot of new projects went wrong, I felt stuck, that I wasn't progressing in my life. Painting my minis, and finally finishing my army helped me a lot. Every mini I painted looked better than the last, At least, I felt, I was progressing on something. I also started playing games with my friends, and I now have an excuse to socialize a lot more.
I'm slowly getting out of there I think, and this hobby has been at my side since the first step of the road

I know I’m probably not your age because I’m a stranger on the internet so we have no idea but it’s not the same for me. I was watching one of my favorite gaming UA-camrs when I saw a video in my feed from him titled “FOR THE EMPEROR| WARHAMMER 40,000 SPACE MARINE” Warhammer was something that I had heard of but was never really into. I knew I was a nerd but didn’t think I would ever be that big of one. I watched the video curiously and I decided to buy the game because it was on sale on steam. I picked it up and I was in love. I spent a day straight playing and beat the game. The universe was so interesting to me and I was so surprised that I had never been into it. That was a year and a half ago and now here I am. I have my Iron Hands on my shelf and a stack of 40K books on my bookshelf. I nerd out heavily on the lore to anyone who will listen and my feed is dominated by 40K. Thank you for listening stranger.

Magazines used to be the easiest way to get news about your hobbies. I had subscriptions to 4 Wheel Action, Guitar World, Nintendo Power, etc. There was a magazine for almost every interest. Now the internet has all the info you need ands more, but there was something great about anticipating the next magazine issue you were waiting for.

I can only play like twice per month coz half of the days I can't attent to our local gamegroup, but always when I do, itz flipping awesome.

I really like this point here. a lot of video games today prey on folks' FOMO with limited edition skins or timed events, but plastic toy soldiers will not decay and will still be there for you no matter how long you wait to build, paint, or play with them

Warhammer is the best Adult toy range out their and the game gives us justification to get together and show off our paint jobs and play with our toys and not feel judged. Thats why i love it, and it also scratches a stratagy game itch like no other. The feeling of tipping the tide of battle in your favor during a 5 hour hame genuinely gives me an adrenaline rush no other game can.

I’m now in my 40’s, first started when I was about 12 with plastic high elves that I painted with Humbrol gloss paints…..!
32 years later I’m still keen, painted my second dark angels army over the last two years, but it is out of my budget these days so it’s hard to justify when I have a family to feed. Still, I get some vicarious enjoyment looking at other peoples projects.

Never liked audiobooks until 40k. I still prefer reading, but there's a lot of chores to do throughout the day, and knowing Colonel Commissar Gaunt is waiting when those chores come. No idea if I'll ever paint a mini in my life, or play a local game (Kill Team is tempting me tho), but it goes to show just how far Warhammer has branched out. To feel part of a community, and to have so many layers to be a part of.

  • @DPD1

I used to play throughout 8th and 9th edition, but I've since stopped as I found that I was limiting my painting only to what could be used in game and making everything as consistent and optimal as possible.
Now that I just focus on building and painting minis I love and being as creative as possible I've rediscovered my passion for the hobby and haven't gone a day without at least a little.bit of warhammer.

Started playing in 2004 in 7th grade. I became obsessed with reading my codex fluff stories over and over again. I spent hours making army lists. It was probably the first time I felt that obsession feeling in my brain. It is such an exciting feeling.
Played 40k and fantasy on and off through senior year of high school and stopped once I got to college.
At 30 years old I had my first child and I wanted a hobby to do in between all of the diaper changes, feedings, and baby naps. I started painting again, and within a couple months I had a fully painted 2000 pt Death Guard army. Ive been obsessed the last 2 years now and got 5 of my buddies also obsessed. Such a great part of my life

I got back into 40k last year after around a 10 year break from tabletop gaming. It's been brilliant, it was like something had been missing for a long time and I've got it back. The amount of time I spend building, painting, playing with my gaming group, even just talking about it makes it a very low cost per hour of enjoyment for me. It's an amazing hobby, or combination of hobbies, and I do feel like my life is enriched by it.

I agree to every word. Such an accurate description of the hobby. Been into warhammer for 35 years. From organizing big tournaments through the 90’s. Scratchbuilding terrain since there wasn’t anything to buy. To nowadays mostly enjoying painting models by myself. People are often curious about the cost and rumour has it’s very expensive. I say it is not compared to what you get in return.
If an army takes a year or two to finish and you skip every other night out in the weekends, then you both have the time and money already sort of paid for. And you get to keep all the models!

My husband has been trying for a few years to get me into Warhammer 😆. I finally caved because I enjoyed watching play on tabletop, bricky, etc.
I read The Lion: Son Of The Forest and I've been hooked ever since. He has Votann, Custodes, and a thousand sons army (though just combat patrol with thousand sons) and I have sisters, Dark angels (painting the deathwing assault), and I'm slowly getting minis from the adeptus mechanicus and tyranids. 😆
Yesterday we played some combat patrol and we were like you know, this makes us clean off the table and clean up a bit 😆. It's been a great hobby to get into (and I have so much to paint LOL).

As someone who has no interest in the minis or war games per se, being primarily interested only in the fluff, drawn to the lore after looking for something different to classic/modern/post-modern SF & Fantasy literature, Black Library encapsulates such a dense & developed set of universes which are definitely greater than the sum of their parts, and it’s been such a revelation of discovery that continues decades after humble beginnings!
Thanks for this video. It gives confirmation and credence to a whole community out there that understands the fascination and simply enjoys escaping to another dimension whether it be the lore, lore videos, painting, game playing or just cosplaying or larping - we are all enjoying human creativity & celebrating our collective camaraderie. Cheers! 🍻

Couldn't agree more. Currently occupied with painting my first ever Chaos Knight, and god if it isn't a project on it's own. It's very fulfilling though, and I've been having a blast trying out things like freehanding for the first time. I wouldn't call it my technically most impressive model (haven't done any OSL, NMM or anything like that) but it's probably my new favorite model, even if it isn't finished.

Just got into this about a week ago with the Introductory Set, I have the Marines and ‘Nids assembled and primed (I did get an x-acto knife and can of primer) primed and first coats of Macragee blue laid down. Been listening to some WesHammer to familiarize myself with the overarching lore and bring me up to speed. I think I’m hooked lol well at least enough to take my local table top shop up on their offer of a pretty heavy discount on one of their remaining Leviathan sets. I been messing around with Lego and collecting Comics as healthy alternatives to doomscrolling but I think Warhammer might be where it’s at.

It is a remarkable hobby. And I think it's an elite tier hobby as well. You can argue "only rich kids buy Warhammer", but if you compare it to any other hobby over a long period of time this is simply not true (maybe drawing is cheaper ok, but compare it to any music instrument or soccer club or whatever). And I think what makes it elite tier is that you commit to painting a whole army, learning something new and if you don't learn, because you have done it literally hundred of times you do the next elite tier thing: hone your skill. You keep your brain active, you are determined and you are consistent and it takes effort. And you have to be deliberate about things and go through a lot of information. And only smart people (and I think there is even a study showing it) put effort into something that isn't as prestigious and flashy to the casual person. So yeah, there are many very good reasons why you can call this hobby elite tier.

Then a month or two later I got the first white dwarf issue I ever owned, USA issue 307 and there was an a showcase of golden demon winners, and best of all a massive diorama of a lizardmen temple city being attacked. it blew my mind and made me get interested in the hobby.

I didn't quit drinking but I got into warhammer to help me reduce my intake. I needed something to focus on aside from gaming as I found it far too easy to just roll out of bed, turn the computer on and grab a beer out the crate.
There have still been a couple of down sides. For one thing I've always been a completionist and the thought of not completing something is a source of anxiety. This goes up to the point that I generally avoid or over invest in something depending on if I think it's possible to "complete".
Secondly it has completely killed my enjoyment of video games. I get excited by the thought of playing them but then the ever nagging voice saying "this is just a cloud of 1s and 0s" kicks in and kills it for me. As you said, it's just not as tangible.

this video inspired me to buy a 3D printer and print my own armies. I used to play Warhammer 40k back in highschool but stopped since I had no time and money, and now I'm not much better off in that regard but fuck it right? life is too short to not do what we love.

I walked into a Warhammer shop after 23 years, and almost fainted when I saw the prices. Before you have a decent army , Including all the paint one must buy, it's either raising children or playing Warhammer ;)

Warhammer is a great hobby if you'd able to exercise self control on the purchasing side lol
Take it from me it's very easy to overspend; I'd recommend having a plan to pick up models incrementally after you first get into the hobby instead of splurging all at once

Stupid as it sounds 40k changed my life for the better, if I weren't spending my money on 40k it'd literally go on drugs or JoJo merch lmao

To me, I need a little bit of different things. I find it unhealthy to be playing single video game, or build single giant Warhammer army. Neither Warhammer or my favorite video games feel like waste of time, but I have to constantly have an option to do different things. That's why I'm playing through like 4 video games now, but also I am building like 4 Warhammer warbands, which are smaller projects then building army. Figuring out that this approach works best for me, took me some time. That's why I'm sharing it, so maybe it will work for others too

I dunno it's kinda bad for you I'd argue. If I have to feel guilty about buying 3 plastic soliders that cost more then food and gas it kinda sucks. Then there's the marketing, GW preys of people who have bad financial habits 🙋🏽. It's rough but there is worse things one could be into

Been into Games Workshop since 1985. My babysitter got me into it. ...you can laugh if you want but it's always been a type of religion to me. ... Friends and associates who poked fun at me have all gone on to be alcoholic's, drug addicts and many more dead by their own hands way, way before their time. ....if the hobby ever stopped or my interest in it stopped there would be a vacuous gap in my existence.

🤔While the Hobby & Setting is great, do not be too quick to heap *_Blind Praise_* onto the current iteration of the very *_Corporate_* side to the Warhammer Inc. Company as it were.
(🔍don't take my word for it, do your own research🔎 & listen to testimonials of those who have worked @ & left the Company..... + past nefarious things the company has done to the community at large......it paints a _very _*_different_*_ picture._ )

I wouldn't say elite. Elitist definitely. Popular definitely. Warhammer is like designer brands: expensive, quite unattractive, underpaid employees (except for the top tier), worthless products (they trash quite a lot of unsold plastic just to understand how much they value it). But of course, you could do worse (Moonstone for example is even more expensive and offers arguably less). You could deffo do better (Infinity for example).

tons of space. lots of money. fragile gamepieces. need to be built and painted. requires high skill. long play sessions. constant updates. anticonsumer company. complex transportation. toxic color vapours. antisocial nerd stigma. needs deeply invested like minded people. needs friendly and spacious game shops. brutal, complex and unforgiving world lore and setting. sounds great to me;)

Remember that Warhammer=/= miniature wargaming just like D&D=/= RPG or Monopoly=/=board games.
There are so much better games in the genre out there, the market is overflowing with excellent, modern games, so it's not like you have to put up with these oldschool, outdated, tedious designs. And I mean Warhammer, D&D and Monopoly in equal measure here ;)
