I'm slowly figuring it out. After the video intro, I'm using a lav mic for speaking and a direct line out of my Apollo for the guitars. AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED! 😂😂
Love the D20! I can take it to a gig, and then plug it into my audio interface at home to record. And since its a great pedal platform, I can get almost any tone I need.
I just bought a Revv G20 yesterday... mindblowingly good. I am running it through a 1x12 cab with a GWS Invader 50w speaker (basically a 50w greenback).... sounds incredible. I also cannot stand V30s which is what I replaced from my Orange ppc112
I bought a Two Notes Torpedo captor x about 2 and a half years ago. For a dude living in an apartment, it's the greatest thing ever. I also use it live at smaller churches with my Dr. Z. I run the amp (route 66) into the 4x12 greenback IR, and it's awesome. Sound guys at those places are funny, and often confused when I try to explain to them what it is. But you're right about real speakers. Check out some Weber Silver Bells. I recommend the ceramic magnets with light dope. Beats everything else I've tried (Scumback, warehouse, other webers, etc.) for that early marshall cab sound. More throaty growl than a blue, and more top end detail/presence than a greenback with sensitivity being somewhere in between the two. Great "all-around" speakers that still have tons of their own character. Thanks for the comparison!
Wow - very well presented. I've been thinking of how best to solve a couple of problems recently - how to get good recorded tones at home relatively simply and quickly (my modeling software which shall remain nameless just ain't cuttin' it for me, and it's anything but quick and simple) and having a second amp to use for smaller gigs and/or situations where I don't want to bring my "really good" amp for whatever reason. The Revv D20 might just be the solution to both. It might not be the ultimate boutique or vintage tube amp tone, but it sounds darn good in this video (I'm a pedal platform guy anyway). With the right small cab and good speaker it could be a great compact live rig, and it's obviously a very good recording solution as well. I've always thought the Ox was "it" but the Revv really holds its own in this example. Thank you Justin!
I have to say that I was pretty surprised at how minimal the difference was. Since I primarily play live, the OxBox isn’t really a tool that works best for me. Just got my Revv D25 today, so it is getting a workout this weekend. I’ve used a Captor X with my Dr Z, so I’m pretty interested to see how it works out
Love the vids! iv found with the revv d20 and g20. The secret to the best direct tones is to run the master volume all the way up. Especially for break up or crunchy tones. Try it out let me know what you think.
Gotta say this makes it a tricky choice. I've been tending towards the OX after having done direct comparisons with a Captor X and an OX with my own main amp. My intention was to grab an OX and gradually add other amps to my stable to use with it recording. The REVV D20 at the price though makes a compelling case as both a recording solution AND an amp that would work in a ton of different live situations as well.
Really enjoying your content. Thanks for putting it out there. Have you tried turning off the IR's in the REVV and using it as a reactive load into a plugin for your IR's? I'm curious what that would do to the tone since you could get some higher quality IR's and blend them to taste in the plugin.
Man your d20 sounds great! I tried out a d20 at a local music store through a speaker cab for just a few minutes it did not sound anywhere as good as yours.. it think it had a v30 in the speaker cab and the d20 was very dark and not very dynamic through it while playing a jazzmaster… I’m gonna go back and try it again through some good quality headphones to hear the difference between the virtual cabs it has in the torpedo software 🤔
Cool video, but while listening to it with my headphones, this thought occurred to me, “Do my ears “hear” things the same?” I’ll have to listen to it again with my headphones reversed. - Yeah, I think my left ear picks up a little more high frequencies than my right. And, I really need a D20.
I've started to get my home studio together. I never recorded any of my music before so I'm trying to make it as easy as possible. The OX Box has been on radar for a long time and just about to pull the trigger on one. I was holding out for a Ox Box MKII if there even is one.
It’s a great piece of gear. If you would be so kind if you do decide to get one, I have affiliate links in my description here. I’d appreciate it if you consider purchasing through my link. Cheers!
I thought it only worked with either cab or modeling! How did you manage to do both? Doesn’t it have the switch on the back to choose from one of them?
The switch is to choose where it sees the resistance load. It’s still sending both outputs (at least when the speaker load is selected; that’s when I noticed this)
Great video! I'm curious how you'd feel playing the new Neural Amp Modeler plugin, and how you feel it compares to using Revv and Ox Box solutions with real tube amps.
Thanks! I’d be curious as well. I’ve never used it. To be honest, I don’t use much in the way of modeling gear besides these. I like the Revv and Ox because I’m still using a real tube amp.
Fantastic! Thank you Justin. I love my REVV D20 for home recording and live. I have the matching REVV 1x12 cab w/ a Warehouse ET90 and it sounds really good. I've been curious about the Ox and CaptorX for my other amps so this is super helpful. *Question: Do you have the gain knob pulled on the D20 for these tones?
@@JustinOstrander Awesome:) Thanks Justin. That's exactly where mine lives most of the time. Grateful for all of your videos btw. Just discovered your channel recently & I've been pretty much devouring as many as I can. I've been learning alot. Thx for sharing your wisdom. Very much appreciated!
Really enjoy your videos. I’m considering selling my Dr Z Maz 38 head. Loud! I’ve been told that the D-20 isn’t as loud as a Deluxe. Great for studio but lacking for live with drums. Thoughts on the D-20 used live?
@@windowsoflife Yes, live. It's about the same output as a Deluxe (20w for the Revv vs 22 for the Deluxe), but if you're in a situation where stage volume is a real problem, the 4watt mode on the Revv is super handy.
They both sound really good. The Rev sounds a bit duller to my ears. The Ox has a more open top end or maybe the upper mid seem a bit more in your face. I think I prefer the Ox, at least today!
I thought I liked the Revv a lot more when playing, but now listening back I think it could be set a little brighter for the heavier fuzz sounds in the video. But then the Ox would be too bright, lol. The Revv does still seem a bit woodier to me in the cleans when I switch back to it throughout. Cheers!
Thanks for the sub. Go to my “do not spend $$$ on home recording gear” video. The Yamahas that I linked in the description there are really hard to beat for the price point.
Great video....I am new to recording....been looking at the G20...seems to have more options? Sounds the same as D20 to me. Are you using a ipad to change cabs? Thanks
Thanks! Yes I’m connected to the OX through my iPad. I have no experience with the G20. Seems like a D20 with a high gain channel. Could be cool! I really do dig my D20. Cheers!
It’s how I get it to sound most like a mono track of my cab. That’s what I’m used to on 99.99% of sessions I do. Even when two mics are used, they sum it to one channel in the monitor system.
It is muted. Only in one or two spots when I’m talking and playing at the same time (a habit I need to break) do you hear a slight trail of room noise. Thanks!
See if I would just keep my fingers off the keyboard and keep watching I would've found out it was the throbak overdrive boost 😅 but I would like to know what settings you're using on it for that fuzziness and are you powering it 9V or battery? I know those throbaks love cheap batteries too
there seems to be a real orthodox almost religious adherence to tube amps. Is it really worth all the trouble and expense. Keyboard players have for the most part let go. You can totally do a drum part with loops/drum replacement. Isn't it time to just admit, we're not almost there. We're there. That other 5 percent is in your mind and ego. @@ronrobins3513 This is a great point. I don't think modelers are quite there yet with tube amps.
