I honestly knew nothing about this amp other then seeing it here and then but not really paying attention. You said this wasn’t going to be a gear review but it was the best gear review I’ve seen. This is how people should make gear review videos. Now I want to try one of these out. Nice job Hypes!

@@ransombaggins9301 I have a Mojotone cab called the Slammin. It's a 1x12(they make 2x12 too). It's shaped kinda like a wedge monitor. I love this thing. I put a Warehouse et65 4ohm speaker in it. It's also convertible from open to closed back.
I noticed that too. Having spent 24 years living next to University of Washington, the W (double-u) is just pronounced "dub" as in "you-dub" (UW). How about Fffff-Dub-Dub? Sounds like an ending to a joke. I.E. "Your money or your amp!" "take my money, please!" Ffff-dub-dub.
My uncle played from 1959 until he dies in 2011 with 3 basses and 1 or 2 amps. The basses were a 59 Kay upright, a 62 Fender jazz bass and a 70’s model Peavey Patriot. For amps he had a 65 Bassman, and another Fender that I can’t remember the name of. That’s all he played for 52 years. He never fiddled with them. Never changed pickups or anything never modded his amps. He said if you couldn’t get what you wanted out of them then you couldn’t get it and he was right. He played surf music to funk to jazz to rock and even hard rock. He was an amazing bass player and he did it with least gear or probably anyone I’ve ever known.
Mostly ice-especially in winter, but seriously, up here in Canada, winter is a great time to practice and write- AND play hockey of course. But Winnipeg is and always has been a great music town, but I live in Saskatoon I dig Rick and your channel. and of course 5 watt world
I've been playing for one month. My studio is the far end of the dining room table. I have 1 guitar: a Squire Stratocaster HSS and 1 amp: a Fender Mustang LT 25, with one app: Fender Tone 1.0.2. The Mustang has 30 presets, and the app adds 30 more which can be modded and saved. So far I'm having a blast; wish I'd started this years ago!
A Squier with a modelling amp will spark the fire and keep it lit for some time! I've "been playing" 15 years, but it was pretty much just strumming open chords. Until this corona business started... Then I decided to get serious about the guitar. It's amazing how much you can learn just off the internet. I dropped out of music theory in college, couldn't make sense of it when getting lectures out of a book... but watching some of these tutorials with a guitar actually in my hand, things just started clicking... Now instead of going months without playing, I might play for hours a day... It seems like the key is going outside that comfort zone as much as possible and not worrying about messing up
Probably about to get back Into it myself. Thinking the revv g20 cause metalhead. A cab of some sort Probably a 2x12. And for guitar either an ibanez s series I can mod down the line or maybe off the get go(looking at maybe a made in Japan model or a higher end model at least) or maybe something else cheaper I can mod right off the get go. Potentially something like 10s guitars since I've seen a few nice looking things decently priced by them. Few used options local too. Was also thinking maybe get something cheap since work keeps me busy and I have issues with my hands in case I don't get super into it again. But kinda thinking that won't happen. And trying to build a studio anyways so it'd be useful. 350 dollar epiphone sg Gothic few used amps though most are meh choices or waaaay to loud for bedroom levels.
@@tonyfdesign If you're thinking of getting a 65 DR Reissue I definitely recommend them. They're indistinguishable from the tube version (to my ears and all the reviews I've seen), they're cheaper in initial cost, and less maintenance. I took it into the studio with me and had the engineer A/B an SR57 with the XLR DI and he couldn't hear a difference, actually told me to start recording solos at home and bring in the WAV. All that plus a great power attenuator and it equals a fantastic amp. Oh, and it's half the weight of the tube version. I don't work for Fender, I just love this amp.
I have a Marshall Origin 20 already and that seems like it would work for this series but after that...I'll be looking for a used Tonemaster to take it for a spin if folks dig this series. I’m about to give up. 😜so many great products out there . I’m leaning towards the Bluguitar mercury ..or even the 2 channel 50 watt THR . Im a little tired of tube issues . This Rev is very interesting. In the meantime, Ill keep practicing .

I have another suggestion for D20 owners(would think it would be great for G20 as well) I have the Boss EQ-200 eq pedal. One of the coolest features of the Eq-200 is using the 4 cable method, you can use 2 separate eqs. One in front of the preamp, and one in front of the power amp. This imo opens the amp to an amazing array of amp tones.
That would be cool. I’ve been using a Rockett Melody, Mark Lettieri signature pedal. It gives me low to medium gain AND the EQ. Mark actually noticed it in the video and commented. :)
Purchased the D20 about a year ago. It's a game changer to have mix ready tracks from the start. I recorded most of my debut album (due out this summer) with it in my home studio. Great modern day amp ! Awesome pedal platform. Great job with the video, keep them coming.
If I was an interior designer I would recommend my clients have a Marshall Stack, a Vox AC30 and a Fender Deluxe Reverb - with an Olympic White Strat, Sunburst Tele, Les Paul Burst and Cherry Red ES-335 in their living room. So much better to look at than Old Master paintings, French furniture and Charles Eames chairs.
That, sir, is a thing of beauty. And Canadian made! You give many other good reasons, very compelling reasons, but supporting home made is important to me as well. I’ve never owned a tube amp but I really like this one!
I always think that simple isn't the same as basic. An amp like the D20 has depth and complexity, but it's distilled into a simple, clean package with enough controls and options to give you flexibility but without too many to make things complicated. Elegant design does far more to encourage simplicity without being constrained by technical limitations. It does what Apple devices were always supposed to, it just works. You can't ask for more than that from an amp. When the music stores here reopen I think I'll definitely look to try one out!

As someone from Winnipeg who now lives in Germany, I was blown away by REVV and was even more blown away by the fact that a company making awesome amps came from the small city I grew up in. Well...technically the company is from a small town just a short drive from Winnipeg, but "close enough". ;-) Keith, I highly recommend you check out the REVV G pedal series (the G2, G3 and G4). No BS...it's like having a tube amp in a solid state pedal. Those guys at REVV really know how to recreate the sound of their amps (and the various channels the amps have) in pedal form. The pedals are on the higher end of the price scale, but worth every penny.
This is such a fantastic channel. Your insight and mannerism are much to be desired in the world of gear. I hope you continue to put this type of content out, as it is a tool that can be used by every day people such as myself. Excellent job!
Keith, I found your channel by watching your History of the Flying V video. I think you're doing something very new and different for guitar on UA-cam, and I mean that in the best possible way. I'm an 80s metal guy, with aspirations of having a Mesa or Marshall half-stack in my living room to jam Slayer, Metallica, and other thrash metal tunes. However, I need a house with a living room first, and even then, those rigs aren't exactly feasible. While channels like Ola's, and Steve from Boston produce fantastic content, for many of us, gear collections like that are untenable due to cost, volume, and many other constraints. Your focus on getting the best sound, for the least amount of gear, all while working around the constraints of your home environment are just what many of us need. Thank you for doing this. Easiest subscription I've added ever.

Was looking for a new amp to gig and record with in the sea of orange, fender, marshall, vox, and countless other companies. You settled the argument I have had in my own mind. I am looking for a less is more approach to my musical journey. Thank you.
@@fivewattworld im chasing tone. I have a custom tele and a 58 stratocaster. My search has lead me to a les paul standered 60s. This plus my pedals im hoping to find that elusive tone. I have done some home recording. My younger years I did some gigs looking to get back into it. The hard part is finding that sound you hear it in your head its almost there you can get it through the studio and software but I want the third demsion of having that tone in a amp. Its not easy getting there on a budget. Its a teacher of patience and practice.
I watch Five Watt World whenever I can. I have a Fender champ because I needed something small for practice (and the neighbors). The first video I saw was the one about the Champ and it made appreciate the amp even more. I had a small line 6 and would get headaches trying to remember settings and then one day it quit working. But my Fender Champ never quit. And it is simple. I like the Revv because it seems like it has a lot of good features but won’t hurt my brain settling it up and using it. Very interesting video again. My 1 amp is a BluGuitar amp1 + BluBox created by Thomas Blug. My journey for searching the "real one amp" for my Blues suddenly ends some years ago when the first generation of this amp appears on the market. Since this time I really love to watch and read reviews about all the nice amps around and finally know that the one I own is the right one for me and another is not needed....maybe until the new ampX is released. The prototype was introduced on NAMM 2020. Let´s wait and see! Keep on your fine channel! Greetings from Germany

How’s it holding up? I just ordered one along with a line 6 HX Effects for MIDI control as well as effects. I was really hesitant to purchase because I live in Canada and everything costs a lot more up here lol
Nothing like that kind of compact amp when I was starting out! They were all big cabinets and heavy heads. It was a two man job to bring the stuff into the gig. And smaller practice amps could never cut it anywhere except your living room. We never had a PA system that could make a guitar sound good, they were vocals only. You would laugh your head off at the amount of heavy stuff we had to lug around in the 1970s just to play a bar gig. This Revv system you show blows it away. Thank you for posting.
This comment may not exactly fit the bill, but I feel that my 50 watt JCM800 head does everything that I would need from an amplifier (at what would seem to be the expense of volume). Assuming I can turn it up loudly enough, it can get almost any kind of dry clean or dry distorted tone that I would want from an amplifier with a solidstate rectifier, from clean jazz or bluegrass all the way on up the dial with the possible exception of some 90s or modern metal like Pantera or Parkway Drive, however with the right pick attack even that can be approximated. I know that it is by no means a small amplifier, however I love its versatility. I want to pair it with a 2x12 Mojotone cabinet that is as big as a 4x12, with a pair of Scumback 100 watt H75 speakers. I would be able to maximize natural low end without getting muddy, or being (subjectively!) too loud at tonally pleasing master volume settings. I apologise for the essay. I did not expect my comment to be this long!
Keith I could tell you that this was a great review, for many reasons including introducing me to the REVV brand. Instead, I'll tell you that it inspired me to head to the studio and plug in for the first time in a few weeks. I needed that. 👍🎸
My 8-yr-old VOX VT30 is great for small gigs, but I just copped a Fender Tonemaster Twin; I’m newly torn but they’re both light enough to drag’em out together! With an A-B-Y switch, I’m loaded for anything now, without spending a small fortune.
Thanks for that vid Keith, great info and perspective. I've been using a Boss Katana head for playing at home, mostly through my interface and monitors, and while it's great the siren song of a tube amp calls. The Revv's have had my attention and I'm twitching even harder now.
Awesome video! I'm interested in the Revv stuff so it's cool to see a take on it that isn't balls to the wall metal. You need to get a hold of, and make a video about, the ultimate clean amp pedal platform that you can use at home and live... the Vox MV50 Clean. I bought one a couple years ago and love it. It's tiny, goes up to 50 watts, and has this fancy NuTube that's "identical" to a vacuum tube. I really like the feel, dynamics, and harmonics of the amp that's tough to hear in solid-state-only clean amps. They also have rock, a/c, and high gain versions of the amp but I haven't tried them.
Updated my studio two months ago from an Eleven Rack to the REVV D20 and man what a difference. I love this little amp. I always wanted a Fender Princeton but can't play loud as I live in an apartment, but the D20 sounds just as good (or close enough) to me, so nowadays I'm in guitar heaven. Works great with pedals, especially for some reason fuzz pedals. But I think this will be my go to amp for quite some time now. Only thing I think about adding is a cab in case I want to gig with it a bit. But for recording the IR's work great.
What kind of fuzz pedal are you using with it? Looking at buying this but with a cab. Virtual cabs are a bonus. Just wonder how it would react with a germanium fuzz face..
@@saepiumv3813 I use two fuzz pedals at the moment. The JHS Calhoun (that has the JHS Firefly as it's fuzz side) and a Hudson Electronics FuzzFuzzFuzz. Both are Tonebender inspired fuzzes and I think that both use germanium transistors. I liked them equally with my old setup, but with the D20 I have to say that I prefer the HE FuzzFuzzFuzz. It's character just comes through so much better with the D20.
We just became Revv dealers and got our first amps in a few days ago. I’m going to have some time today (finally) to try them out without running to answer phones and watching your excellent video has given me some great ideas. Thanks Keith!
One amp guy here. Marshall Origin 20 Head. Switchable to 20 watts, 3 watts or .5 watt. I am surprised being someone who has played a long time and owned expensive amps at how this affordable amp has become my favorite. I also have an HX Stomp with which I have been running pre-amps into the effects loop of the Origin giving me all kinds of amp sounds with a real tube power section. Sounds ace. Love the channel Keith. Keep up the good work.
I have an Origin 20 now. I bought it for my "Beano on a Budget" video project that I'm doing with David Barber and Jeff McErlain. So I'll be doing your amp in this series. I just need to get more hours in on it first.

Great Vid! Love you Channel and Content!! I’ve been a working musician for 56yrs now and have FINALLY found my go to amps. I’ve played a lot of Tube amps in my day and loved them all but because I’m now 67 with the usual Old Musician complaints and some other health conditions I’m now using the New Fender Tone Master Amps. I use the TM Twin for larger Gigs and the TM Deluxe for smaller Shows. At 33 and 23lbs they fit the bill as far as weight and it’s VERY hard to tell the difference between their Tub counterparts in my opinion. The sound the the real deal after being retubed. Add a couple good pedals and I’m home free!! Although every once in a while I do break out my old trusty Tweed Blues Jr. for a spin.....LOL! Please keep up the Good Work I look forward to your Vids! I've been using a sansamp GT2 for years. It's dead simple to use can get a ton of different sounds. For live use you can go straight into an active PA speaker or the effects return of a backline amp. Technically it's not an amp, but it's still my favorite "one amp" solution.
Thanks, Keith! It sounds great. I found my amp years ago. It's a Vox AC 15. I use it as an acoustic amp. 15 watts full, 7.5 on the switch! The Fishman rare earth helps me achieve a decent sound, without having to use a single coil, volume and tone pots like i did years ago. I only use it at home, i plug into a PA when out.
Fellas, Revv has been THĒ hottest “new-ish” amp company for a while now. Every single prog-metal guy (yes I know that this channel is definitely NOT filled with prog-metal fans) has major gear lust for the Revv products as some of their favorite artists use the Revv gear. LOVE LOVE LOVE this company and the innovations they are putting out. They really think outside the box and to me, a lot of the other major amp companies (both analog and digital stuff) are just trying to play catch up to Revv. I own all three G-series pedals (G2, G3, G4) and they have a permanent place on my board. The D-20 is next for me. Can’t say enough good things about Revv.
Been eyeing these for awhile. Out of the budget at the moment, but really love what I’m seeing and hearing. Currently very happy with my Quilter ToneBlock202 and matching Quilter 12 cab. The included “flat channel” has been great for my HeadRush, and the regular “channels” are super solid. Also, the power this combo is capable of from basically nothing to hundreds of watts is crazy. Also, it’s super light. But still, a second more traditional tube amp that includes modern features like the Revv is definitely on my shortlist...at the top of that list now. Thanks!
I own a Victory v30 mk2. High power setting is around 37 watts, low power setting is around 7 watts. Those 7 little watts will easily make you lose your hearing and piss your panties. Very very powerful amp. But sounds great at bedroom levels as well.
You can’t go wrong with any Mojotone product. Those guys have had my business for amp parts and cabinets for almost a decade now. I can’t tell you how many Tweed cabs I bought from them to either replace a ratty original or for a new amp build. Their 59 Clone humbuckers are better than Gibson Custombuckers too! Here I was, about to build something similar to the FYD MarCh.....
Mojotone is top notch. I love their vintage taper pots, vitamin t and other caps. I just bought a set of their 59 clone strat set. They are to excellent!
Either a Fender Blues Jnr Deluxe, an Orange Rockerverb 50, or a Marshall JCM 800. Although there's a boutique maker that makes a copy of Dumles but much cheaper. They still cost a fair bit, but less than a Dumble. You can chose your own amp colour, whether custom Tolex or coloured Suede. Wattage is customisable, as is front grille type, and available as a head or combo.
hello keith. re: swapping out the 12ax7 in "Tube 1". depending on biasing, there are a number of substitute tubes. at7, au7, av7. each will lower the gain by different amounts. also different brands of ax7 will change the sound and feel as well. the best i have found is the Gold Lion brand. their premium range claims to feature the only ax7 to give 100% output available. most makers fall short of this. i love the at7 ( about 60% output. ) cheers. j.
Great video! The Revv 20 series has certainly been a 1 amp solution for me. I got a G20 (partially based on your thoughts in this video) and the G20 paired with a Keeley D&M drive has given me all the gain range and sounds I know what to do with.
Zack any issues channel switching on the G20? I demoed on that would pop every time I switched from the overdrive channel to the clean. If it hadn't done that I would have bought it...
@@ClarkeCooperX no issues channel switching for me. My only gripe could also be considered a feature depending on your application. When I set it to 4W mode on clean and switch to the dirty channel, it defaults to the 20W mode. I imagine this could be addressed using MIDI, but I haven't tried

Awesome video---Ive heard of these amps but never in that level of detail they sound great and are very well thought out on their design, great job as always. While I love the idea for a "series" I shudder at the thought of ever having just one amp, its like eating one potato chip, lol.
Great vid. I've been impressed, with the Revv; tho, not in my current budget. I also appreciate your only talking about equipment that 'makes the grade'. I agree, with the comments about different speakers. I bought a gutted 4X12 and installed four different speaks and a selector switch. I've also done it with two diff pairs of 2x12's. I've got quite the collection of old Jenson's & Oxford's, as well as some modern choices. It's been a nice way to pair speakers with amps. Currently rebuilding a 1950 Bell & Howell 6L6 PP amp. The selector box will come in handy.
@@fivewattworld It's the same, for me. I CAN afford it - but guitars & amps are a hobby. I have a my own biz daytime and am keyboardist; in the off hrs. I've worked on tube Hi-fi gear, so guitar amps was an easy leap. I learned some basic luthier skills, as well. I buy solid built guitars; do the setup and the hardware - off I go

I’ve got the Generator 120 Mkiii and I don’t think I’ve ever used an amp with this many bells and whistles that is also incredibly intuitive. Also, I will totally agree with you on the Revv power scaling. My Generator 120 Mkiii goes from 120 watts down to 10 watts, and doesn’t make me feel like I’ve sacrificed anything. I’m in a loud band that utilizes very loud amps (Matamp GT120, Ampeg V4, etc) and being able to have an exact version of my loud tone at bedroom levels is something I’ve never been able to capture. This amp makes it possible. I might grab a G20 as a backup since the direct in option is so well done.
I'm finding that my little FSR Tweed Bassbreaker 007 and a Fender JA90 Thinline Telecaster pretty much does all I want right now to the point that everything else is gathering dust

@@RichardMcLamore I have 2 victorias - a deluxe and a bassman. One for smaller gigs and one for bigger gigs. I'd love to have one amp right in the middle - hence the description I gave. Neither of my amps have verb or trem so I have to use pedals for that.
I've been seeing Revv gear around a lot lately. I had no idea it was made in Canada. As a proud Canadian, I own a couple of Traynor amplifiers (made in Toronto) but I'm thinking I need to check out a Revv. That might mean ditching a Traynor, or my Deluxe Reverb RI (but never my silverface AB763 Twin Reverb - I can hardly life the thing anymore!) Clearly, I'm not about to get down to 1 amplifier soon, although it's a fun exercise to think about. Apologies if you've done this and I missed it, but I'm interested in hearing more about your studio setup. What does a 5 Watt World compatible studio look like? I think my own fits the bill: 2 6 inch powered monitors, a Steinberg UR22 mkII interface, a Shure SM57 & 58, and Reaper as my DAW. If you haven't already, maybe you could talk a bit about your rig and the choices that informed putting it together.
Brother I’m from the USA and I absolutely love Traynor gear! From amps to live rigs. Their pa gear is top notch. I call them Canada’s secret weapon because the used market here is very low price for excellent quality
An amp that I've felt the same way about for a while is my Blackstar ID Core 100 stereo combo. While it's not a tube amp, it's not a modeling amp in the traditional sense either. It has a great response that reminds me of my tube amp that I used to have. It's got 6 great voicings, and very similar output features to what the Revv has. For a hobbyist player looking for a gigging/home recording amp for under $500, it's been a really satisfying and versatile amp.
I want to point out that I found the "valve = tube in britain" caption useful. I'm a beginner and I actually thought valve amps and tube amps were two different things :/
Im down to two amps, both older tube. A 72 silverface champ and an early 80’s sundown A-50 (RIP Dennis Kager) Both have warehouse speakers. Both sound killer. This little Revv head has got me curious though. Great channel, please keep up the good work.
Keith, right on!!! I have a Blackstar HT-5R Combo which also comes as a head with cabinet (not the mkII version), it is a bargain, entry level tube amp (I paid $449.99 for mine) and while it is only 5 watts, turning the amp on and leaving it in standby allows you to plug in a stereo headphone, it has two cabinet ( 4 x 12" closed back or 1 x 12" open backed speaker) emulation by pushing a button, a clean and a overdrive channel (heck they even included a footswitch to allow you to go from clean to overdrive, bass, mid and treble and a thing called ISF that change the town from a Fender amp tone to a British toned amp, a 12" speaker, 2 additional speaker jacks, digital reverb, an effects loop with attenuator and line/mp3 input with 2 valves ( 1 x ECC83 and a 1 x 12BH7) all in a 12kg package. While it is not a revv, I can play into headphone with having all features available or use the 5 watts into the internal speaker along with 2 external speakers. I thank you for your insightful review. I had never heard of Revv until now an admit the Revv is the logical next move up for me and could replace both my Blackstar HT-5R and my 15 watt Fender Blues Jr III NOS tweed with a Jensen 12" speaker. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I can now trim down by one amp to get down to the least amount of gear. Take care, stay well and be safe.
Over the years of playing I have come to find out and agree with the statements made in the video that around 15 to 20 watts is the prime wattage for almost any gig just look at Mike Campbell's rig using small wattage amps with microphones to play stadiums( although in that situation there's something to be said about a good microphone preamp as well) I only wish I had this many good choices in amplifiers 40 years ago one thing I didn't see in this video was how the Rev stands up to foot pedals besides that great video keep up the good work at the five watt world

I currently have a Roland Blues Cube, a Vox AC10, a VVT Nighthawk (Boutique builder from here in Southern MD) and recently a Mesa Boogie California Tweed head into a H&K 2 x 12 cab. Too much good stuff for a hobbyist.

Even better this time around :) To roughly repeat the rest of my comment from first time around, these Revv amps are super-cool, and if I hadn't already found my amp, I'd be very interested. But the Blackstar Artisan 10AE meets my needs. 10 watts, super-portable (30lbs with a Creamback Neo speaker upgrade), single class-A EL34, compensated record output. OK so not my "one" amp, as I like to run a pair in stereo. But I could sell all my other amps and still be happy. I probably won't though!
I have owned the Friedman Runt20 combo for 3 years. 3 flavor clean switch, BE 100 based dirty channel, w cut boost, 3 band eq, XLR out that is not to be believed for recording or cranking and monitoring through interface volume. From clean to metal it does it all beautifully. Great video! I'm going to check out the Revv!

I'm a dyed in the wool tube amp guy, and I'm also a "get off my lawn" guy. But I've been eyeballing these little Revv20's too for the past year. I haven't taken the plunge...yet. But it seems like a no brainer to at least give one a try. Now get off my LAWN!!

Since no one in the house appreciates the Fender amp past, say 1, I recently purchased the Two-Notes Captor X. It's really nice to use my amp and headphones-Ableton input too. Keeps the peace around here I suppose. I must admit all of the mic, speakers, cabs options are a little overwhelming. I have to be careful to remind myself to sit and play, not sit and get lost in software. Another great video!
Being from the north of Essex in the UK I'm lucky enough to live very close to where Victory Amplification is based. Their little heads share some features with the Revv stuff, although they've yet to release anything that has IRs built in. When I had an isolated bungalow on a farm to live in I was quite happy lumping big amps & cabs around but after I moved into a flat about five years ago that became less practical. The Victory Duchess, Sheriff, Red Dwarf and Countess have either passed through, or are in, my hands since the move. Well worth checking out if small amps with some kind of power scaling is your thing.
I have followed the Victory amps for a long time but they aren't easy to get my hands on here....or not yet anyway. I've been very impressed by what I've heard and who've been using them.
@@fivewattworld Much the same with the Revv stuff over here. I could get it but having Victory on my doorstep makes using their amps a bit of a no-brainer. Weirdly someone posted a question regarding the Revv 20 series and Victory pre-amps on the Victory Owners Facebook page late yesterday! I didn't see it until after I'd watched your video though. Revv is really a 1 amp solution. I sold (almost) every amp I owned now that I own a REVV generator. My Peavey invective was almost that amp but the REVV checks every block. My only other amp is the Peavey classic 20 mh. It is also a great amp that checks every box.
Great video Keith. It's a neat little package and I'm sure it's well made etc but for someone like me it's a little too complicated - Impulse Response is a term I increasingly hear ,but I haven't a clue what it actually means tbh. I own some older recording stuff (Tascam 2488 MkII , Alesis monitors etc) but haven't owned a computer for years . 👍
The D20 is pretty simple really. And if you're recording it makes capturing ideas easier than taking the time to put up a mic etc. But everyone's needs are different. If your rig works, that's the best.

@@ransombaggins9301 I have a Mojotone cab called the Slammin. It's a 1x12(they make 2x12 too). It's shaped kinda like a wedge monitor. I love this thing. I put a Warehouse et65 4ohm speaker in it. It's also convertible from open to closed back.

My uncle played from 1959 until he dies in 2011 with 3 basses and 1 or 2 amps. The basses were a 59 Kay upright, a 62 Fender jazz bass and a 70’s model Peavey Patriot. For amps he had a 65 Bassman, and another Fender that I can’t remember the name of. That’s all he played for 52 years. He never fiddled with them. Never changed pickups or anything never modded his amps. He said if you couldn’t get what you wanted out of them then you couldn’t get it and he was right. He played surf music to funk to jazz to rock and even hard rock. He was an amazing bass player and he did it with least gear or probably anyone I’ve ever known.

I own the D20 and it checks every box I need for home recording. Excellent amplifier.
I've been playing for one month. My studio is the far end of the dining room table. I have 1 guitar: a Squire Stratocaster HSS and 1 amp: a Fender Mustang LT 25, with one app: Fender Tone 1.0.2. The Mustang has 30 presets, and the app adds 30 more which can be modded and saved. So far I'm having a blast; wish I'd started this years ago!
A Squier with a modelling amp will spark the fire and keep it lit for some time! I've "been playing" 15 years, but it was pretty much just strumming open chords. Until this corona business started... Then I decided to get serious about the guitar. It's amazing how much you can learn just off the internet. I dropped out of music theory in college, couldn't make sense of it when getting lectures out of a book... but watching some of these tutorials with a guitar actually in my hand, things just started clicking... Now instead of going months without playing, I might play for hours a day... It seems like the key is going outside that comfort zone as much as possible and not worrying about messing up

Thinking the revv g20 cause metalhead. A cab of some sort Probably a 2x12. And for guitar either an ibanez s series I can mod down the line or maybe off the get go(looking at maybe a made in Japan model or a higher end model at least) or maybe something else cheaper I can mod right off the get go. Potentially something like 10s guitars since I've seen a few nice looking things decently priced by them.
Few used options local too. Was also thinking maybe get something cheap since work keeps me busy and I have issues with my hands in case I don't get super into it again. But kinda thinking that won't happen. And trying to build a studio anyways so it'd be useful. 350 dollar epiphone sg Gothic few used amps though most are meh choices or waaaay to loud for bedroom levels.

I own one amp, the Fender Deluxe Reverb Tone Master. It sound amazing and with the power attenuator and XLR out it's the only amp I'll need.

@@tonyfdesign If you're thinking of getting a 65 DR Reissue I definitely recommend them. They're indistinguishable from the tube version (to my ears and all the reviews I've seen), they're cheaper in initial cost, and less maintenance. I took it into the studio with me and had the engineer A/B an SR57 with the XLR DI and he couldn't hear a difference, actually told me to start recording solos at home and bring in the WAV. All that plus a great power attenuator and it equals a fantastic amp. Oh, and it's half the weight of the tube version.
I don't work for Fender, I just love this amp.
I have a Marshall Origin 20 already and that seems like it would work for this series but after that...I'll be looking for a used Tonemaster to take it for a spin if folks dig this series.

I’m about to give up. 😜so many great products out there . I’m leaning towards the Bluguitar mercury ..or even the 2 channel 50 watt THR . Im a little tired of tube issues . This Rev is very interesting. In the meantime, Ill keep practicing .

I have another suggestion for D20 owners(would think it would be great for G20 as well) I have the Boss EQ-200 eq pedal. One of the coolest features of the Eq-200 is using the 4 cable method, you can use 2 separate eqs. One in front of the preamp, and one in front of the power amp. This imo opens the amp to an amazing array of amp tones.
That would be cool. I’ve been using a Rockett Melody, Mark Lettieri signature pedal. It gives me low to medium gain AND the EQ. Mark actually noticed it in the video and commented. :)
Purchased the D20 about a year ago. It's a game changer to have mix ready tracks from the start. I recorded most of my debut album (due out this summer) with it in my home studio. Great modern day amp ! Awesome pedal platform. Great job with the video, keep them coming.
If I was an interior designer I would recommend my clients have a Marshall Stack, a Vox AC30 and a Fender Deluxe Reverb - with an Olympic White Strat, Sunburst Tele, Les Paul Burst and Cherry Red ES-335 in their living room. So much better to look at than Old Master paintings, French furniture and Charles Eames chairs.
You do seem to know the finer things Craig. I’ll call you if I ever get to do the ultimate studio space. :)

That, sir, is a thing of beauty. And Canadian made! You give many other good reasons, very compelling reasons, but supporting home made is important to me as well. I’ve never owned a tube amp but I really like this one!
I always think that simple isn't the same as basic. An amp like the D20 has depth and complexity, but it's distilled into a simple, clean package with enough controls and options to give you flexibility but without too many to make things complicated. Elegant design does far more to encourage simplicity without being constrained by technical limitations. It does what Apple devices were always supposed to, it just works. You can't ask for more than that from an amp. When the music stores here reopen I think I'll definitely look to try one out!

As someone from Winnipeg who now lives in Germany, I was blown away by REVV and was even more blown away by the fact that a company making awesome amps came from the small city I grew up in. Well...technically the company is from a small town just a short drive from Winnipeg, but "close enough". ;-)
Keith, I highly recommend you check out the REVV G pedal series (the G2, G3 and G4). No BS...it's like having a tube amp in a solid state pedal. Those guys at REVV really know how to recreate the sound of their amps (and the various channels the amps have) in pedal form. The pedals are on the higher end of the price scale, but worth every penny.
It’s on my list to try their pedals. One of my favorite companies.

Keith, I found your channel by watching your History of the Flying V video. I think you're doing something very new and different for guitar on UA-cam, and I mean that in the best possible way. I'm an 80s metal guy, with aspirations of having a Mesa or Marshall half-stack in my living room to jam Slayer, Metallica, and other thrash metal tunes. However, I need a house with a living room first, and even then, those rigs aren't exactly feasible. While channels like Ola's, and Steve from Boston produce fantastic content, for many of us, gear collections like that are untenable due to cost, volume, and many other constraints. Your focus on getting the best sound, for the least amount of gear, all while working around the constraints of your home environment are just what many of us need. Thank you for doing this. Easiest subscription I've added ever.

Both models, the D20 and the G20 have merits. If it's heavier music then the G20. Short of that, or a need for channel switching I'd go with the D20.
@@fivewattworld im chasing tone. I have a custom tele and a 58 stratocaster. My search has lead me to a les paul standered 60s. This plus my pedals im hoping to find that elusive tone. I have done some home recording. My younger years I did some gigs looking to get back into it. The hard part is finding that sound you hear it in your head its almost there you can get it through the studio and software but I want the third demsion of having that tone in a amp. Its not easy getting there on a budget. Its a teacher of patience and practice.
I watch Five Watt World whenever I can. I have a Fender champ because I needed something small for practice (and the neighbors). The first video I saw was the one about the Champ and it made appreciate the amp even more. I had a small line 6 and would get headaches trying to remember settings and then one day it quit working. But my Fender Champ never quit. And it is simple. I like the Revv because it seems like it has a lot of good features but won’t hurt my brain settling it up and using it. Very interesting video again. My 1 amp is a BluGuitar amp1 + BluBox created by Thomas Blug. My journey for searching the "real one amp" for my Blues suddenly ends some years ago when the first generation of this amp appears on the market. Since this time I really love to watch and read reviews about all the nice amps around and finally know that the one I own is the right one for me and another is not needed....maybe until the new ampX is released. The prototype was introduced on NAMM 2020. Let´s wait and see!

How’s it holding up? I just ordered one along with a line 6 HX Effects for MIDI control as well as effects. I was really hesitant to purchase because I live in Canada and everything costs a lot more up here lol
Interestingly I have an HX Effects coming to use in a similar way.
Nothing like that kind of compact amp when I was starting out! They were all big cabinets and heavy heads. It was a two man job to bring the stuff into the gig. And smaller practice amps could never cut it anywhere except your living room. We never had a PA system that could make a guitar sound good, they were vocals only. You would laugh your head off at the amount of heavy stuff we had to lug around in the 1970s just to play a bar gig. This Revv system you show blows it away. Thank you for posting.
This comment may not exactly fit the bill, but I feel that my 50 watt JCM800 head does everything that I would need from an amplifier (at what would seem to be the expense of volume). Assuming I can turn it up loudly enough, it can get almost any kind of dry clean or dry distorted tone that I would want from an amplifier with a solidstate rectifier, from clean jazz or bluegrass all the way on up the dial with the possible exception of some 90s or modern metal like Pantera or Parkway Drive, however with the right pick attack even that can be approximated. I know that it is by no means a small amplifier, however I love its versatility. I want to pair it with a 2x12 Mojotone cabinet that is as big as a 4x12, with a pair of Scumback 100 watt H75 speakers. I would be able to maximize natural low end without getting muddy, or being (subjectively!) too loud at tonally pleasing master volume settings.

My 8-yr-old VOX VT30 is great for small gigs, but I just copped a Fender Tonemaster Twin; I’m newly torn but they’re both light enough to drag’em out together! With an A-B-Y switch, I’m loaded for anything now, without spending a small fortune.
Thanks for that vid Keith, great info and perspective. I've been using a Boss Katana head for playing at home, mostly through my interface and monitors, and while it's great the siren song of a tube amp calls. The Revv's have had my attention and I'm twitching even harder now.

Awesome video! I'm interested in the Revv stuff so it's cool to see a take on it that isn't balls to the wall metal.
You need to get a hold of, and make a video about, the ultimate clean amp pedal platform that you can use at home and live... the Vox MV50 Clean. I bought one a couple years ago and love it. It's tiny, goes up to 50 watts, and has this fancy NuTube that's "identical" to a vacuum tube. I really like the feel, dynamics, and harmonics of the amp that's tough to hear in solid-state-only clean amps. They also have rock, a/c, and high gain versions of the amp but I haven't tried them.

Updated my studio two months ago from an Eleven Rack to the REVV D20 and man what a difference. I love this little amp. I always wanted a Fender Princeton but can't play loud as I live in an apartment, but the D20 sounds just as good (or close enough) to me, so nowadays I'm in guitar heaven. Works great with pedals, especially for some reason fuzz pedals. But I think this will be my go to amp for quite some time now. Only thing I think about adding is a cab in case I want to gig with it a bit. But for recording the IR's work great.
What kind of fuzz pedal are you using with it? Looking at buying this but with a cab. Virtual cabs are a bonus. Just wonder how it would react with a germanium fuzz face..
@@saepiumv3813 I use two fuzz pedals at the moment. The JHS Calhoun (that has the JHS Firefly as it's fuzz side) and a Hudson Electronics FuzzFuzzFuzz. Both are Tonebender inspired fuzzes and I think that both use germanium transistors. I liked them equally with my old setup, but with the D20 I have to say that I prefer the HE FuzzFuzzFuzz. It's character just comes through so much better with the D20.

Try changing the V1 tube to something vintage. It brought 20 series amps to life. I’ve talked to Derek about it a lot.
One amp guy here. Marshall Origin 20 Head. Switchable to 20 watts, 3 watts or .5 watt. I am surprised being someone who has played a long time and owned expensive amps at how this affordable amp has become my favorite. I also have an HX Stomp with which I have been running pre-amps into the effects loop of the Origin giving me all kinds of amp sounds with a real tube power section. Sounds ace. Love the channel Keith. Keep up the good work.

Great Vid! Love you Channel and Content!! I’ve been a working musician for 56yrs now and have FINALLY found my go to amps. I’ve played a lot of Tube amps in my day and loved them all but because I’m now 67 with the usual Old Musician complaints and some other health conditions I’m now using the New Fender Tone Master Amps. I use the TM Twin for larger Gigs and the TM Deluxe for smaller Shows. At 33 and 23lbs they fit the bill as far as weight and it’s VERY hard to tell the difference between their Tub counterparts in my opinion. The sound the the real deal after being retubed. Add a couple good pedals and I’m home free!! Although every once in a while I do break out my old trusty Tweed Blues Jr. for a spin.....LOL! Please keep up the Good Work I look forward to your Vids! I've been using a sansamp GT2 for years. It's dead simple to use can get a ton of different sounds. For live use you can go straight into an active PA speaker or the effects return of a backline amp. Technically it's not an amp, but it's still my favorite "one amp" solution.

Thanks, Keith! It sounds great. I found my amp years ago. It's a Vox AC 15. I use it as an acoustic amp. 15 watts full, 7.5 on the switch! The Fishman rare earth helps me achieve a decent sound, without having to use a single coil, volume and tone pots like i did years ago. I only use it at home, i plug into a PA when out.
Quilters make for great only amp, awaiting review, seem like an appropriate fit for the channel, so versatile so light
Fellas, Revv has been THĒ hottest “new-ish” amp company for a while now. Every single prog-metal guy (yes I know that this channel is definitely NOT filled with prog-metal fans) has major gear lust for the Revv products as some of their favorite artists use the Revv gear. LOVE LOVE LOVE this company and the innovations they are putting out. They really think outside the box and to me, a lot of the other major amp companies (both analog and digital stuff) are just trying to play catch up to Revv.
I own all three G-series pedals (G2, G3, G4) and they have a permanent place on my board. The D-20 is next for me. Can’t say enough good things about Revv.
Been eyeing these for awhile. Out of the budget at the moment, but really love what I’m seeing and hearing. Currently very happy with my Quilter ToneBlock202 and matching Quilter 12 cab. The included “flat channel” has been great for my HeadRush, and the regular “channels” are super solid. Also, the power this combo is capable of from basically nothing to hundreds of watts is crazy. I own a Victory v30 mk2. High power setting is around 37 watts, low power setting is around 7 watts. Those 7 little watts will easily make you lose your hearing and piss your panties. Very very powerful amp. But sounds great at bedroom levels as well.
You can’t go wrong with any Mojotone product. Those guys have had my business for amp parts and cabinets for almost a decade now. I can’t tell you how many Tweed cabs I bought from them to either replace a ratty original or for a new amp build. Their 59 Clone humbuckers are better than Gibson Custombuckers too!

Mojotone is top notch. I love their vintage taper pots, vitamin t and other caps. I just bought a set of their 59 clone strat set. They are to excellent!
Either a Fender Blues Jnr Deluxe, an Orange Rockerverb 50, or a Marshall JCM 800. Although there's a boutique maker that makes a copy of Dumles but much cheaper. They still cost a fair bit, but less than a Dumble. You can chose your own amp colour, whether custom Tolex or coloured Suede. Wattage is customisable, as is front grille type, and available as a head or combo.
hello keith. re: swapping out the 12ax7 in "Tube 1". depending on biasing, there are a number of substitute tubes. at7, au7, av7. each will lower the gain by different amounts. also different brands of ax7 will change the sound and feel as well. the best i have found is the Gold Lion brand. their premium range claims to feature the only ax7 to give 100% output available. most makers fall short of this. i love the at7 ( about 60% output. ) cheers. j.

Great video! The Revv 20 series has certainly been a 1 amp solution for me. I got a G20 (partially based on your thoughts in this video) and the G20 paired with a Keeley D&M drive has given me all the gain range and sounds I know what to do with.
Zack any issues channel switching on the G20? I demoed on that would pop every time I switched from the overdrive channel to the clean. If it hadn't done that I would have bought it...
@@ClarkeCooperX no issues channel switching for me. My only gripe could also be considered a feature depending on your application. When I set it to 4W mode on clean and switch to the dirty channel, it defaults to the 20W mode. I imagine this could be addressed using MIDI, but I haven't tried

Awesome video---Ive heard of these amps but never in that level of detail they sound great and are very well thought out on their design, great job as always. While I love the idea for a "series" I shudder at the thought of ever having just one amp, its like eating one potato chip, lol.

I agree, with the comments about different speakers. I bought a gutted 4X12 and installed four different speaks and a selector switch. I've also done it with two diff pairs of 2x12's. I've got quite the collection of old Jenson's & Oxford's, as well as some modern choices. It's been a nice way to pair speakers with amps. Currently rebuilding a 1950 Bell & Howell 6L6 PP amp. The selector box will come in handy.

@@fivewattworld It's the same, for me. I CAN afford it - but guitars & amps are a hobby. I have a my own biz daytime and am keyboardist; in the off hrs. I've worked on tube Hi-fi gear, so guitar amps was an easy leap. I learned some basic luthier skills, as well. I buy solid built guitars; do the setup and the hardware - off I go

I’ve got the Generator 120 Mkiii and I don’t think I’ve ever used an amp with this many bells and whistles that is also incredibly intuitive. Also, I will totally agree with you on the Revv power scaling. My Generator 120 Mkiii goes from 120 watts down to 10 watts, and doesn’t make me feel like I’ve sacrificed anything. I’m in a loud band that utilizes very loud amps (Matamp GT120, Ampeg V4, etc) and being able to have an exact version of my loud tone at bedroom levels is something I’ve never been able to capture. This amp makes it possible. I might grab a G20 as a backup since the direct in option is so well done.

@@RichardMcLamore I have 2 victorias - a deluxe and a bassman. One for smaller gigs and one for bigger gigs. I'd love to have one amp right in the middle - hence the description I gave. Neither of my amps have verb or trem so I have to use pedals for that.

I've been seeing Revv gear around a lot lately. I had no idea it was made in Canada. As a proud Canadian, I own a couple of Traynor amplifiers (made in Toronto) but I'm thinking I need to check out a Revv. That might mean ditching a Traynor, or my Deluxe Reverb RI (but never my silverface AB763 Twin Reverb - I can hardly life the thing anymore!) Clearly, I'm not about to get down to 1 amplifier soon, although it's a fun exercise to think about.
Apologies if you've done this and I missed it, but I'm interested in hearing more about your studio setup. What does a 5 Watt World compatible studio look like? I think my own fits the bill: 2 6 inch powered monitors, a Steinberg UR22 mkII interface, a Shure SM57 & 58, and Reaper as my DAW. If you haven't already, maybe you could talk a bit about your rig and the choices that informed putting it together.

Brother I’m from the USA and I absolutely love Traynor gear! From amps to live rigs. Their pa gear is top notch. I call them Canada’s secret weapon because the used market here is very low price for excellent quality
Traynor are so under rated.

Check out Fender's Deluxe Reverb Tonemaster- It goes from 22 watts down to 0.2 watts, and has an XLR out with 2 mic IR's. It sounds great, too.
An amp that I've felt the same way about for a while is my Blackstar ID Core 100 stereo combo. While it's not a tube amp, it's not a modeling amp in the traditional sense either. It has a great response that reminds me of my tube amp that I used to have. It's got 6 great voicings, and very similar output features to what the Revv has. For a hobbyist player looking for a gigging/home recording amp for under $500, it's been a really satisfying and versatile amp.
I want to point out that I found the "valve = tube in britain" caption useful. I'm a beginner and I actually thought valve amps and tube amps were two different things :/

I have a Blackstar HT-5R Combo which also comes as a head with cabinet (not the mkII version), it is a bargain, entry level tube amp (I paid $449.99 for mine) and while it is only 5 watts, turning the amp on and leaving it in standby allows you to plug in a stereo headphone, it has two cabinet ( 4 x 12" closed back or 1 x 12" open backed speaker) emulation by pushing a button, a clean and a overdrive channel (heck they even included a footswitch to allow you to go from clean to overdrive, bass, mid and treble and a thing called ISF that change the town from a Fender amp tone to a British toned amp, a 12" speaker, 2 additional speaker jacks, digital reverb, an effects loop with attenuator and line/mp3 input with 2 valves ( 1 x ECC83 and a 1 x 12BH7) all in a 12kg package. While it is not a revv, I can play into headphone with having all features available or use the 5 watts into the internal speaker along with 2 external speakers. I thank you for your insightful review. I had never heard of Revv until now an admit the Revv is the logical next move up for me and could replace both my Blackstar HT-5R and my 15 watt Fender Blues Jr III NOS tweed with a Jensen 12" speaker. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I can now trim down by one amp to get down to the least amount of gear. Take care, stay well and be safe.

Over the years of playing I have come to find out and agree with the statements made in the video that around 15 to 20 watts is the prime wattage for almost any gig just look at Mike Campbell's rig using small wattage amps with microphones to play stadiums( although in that situation there's something to be said about a good microphone preamp as well) I only wish I had this many good choices in amplifiers 40 years ago one thing I didn't see in this video was how the Rev stands up to foot pedals besides that great video keep up the good work at the five watt world
My original comment was something to the effect... Aren't you supposed to be a "disabler" instead of an "enabler"? I have been thinking on one of these but need another amp like a hole in the head... now, you have practically talked me into it with this great review ! I currently have a Roland Blues Cube, a Vox AC10, a VVT Nighthawk (Boutique builder from here in Southern MD) and recently a Mesa Boogie California Tweed head into a H&K 2 x 12 cab. Too much good stuff for a hobbyist.

To roughly repeat the rest of my comment from first time around, these Revv amps are super-cool, and if I hadn't already found my amp, I'd be very interested. But the Blackstar Artisan 10AE meets my needs. 10 watts, super-portable (30lbs with a Creamback Neo speaker upgrade), single class-A EL34, compensated record output. OK so not my "one" amp, as I like to run a pair in stereo. But I could sell all my other amps and still be happy. I probably won't though!
I have owned the Friedman Runt20 combo for 3 years. 3 flavor clean switch, BE 100 based dirty channel, w cut boost, 3 band eq, XLR out that is not to be believed for recording or cranking and monitoring through interface volume. From clean to metal it does it all beautifully. Great video! I'm going to check out the Revv!

I'm a dyed in the wool tube amp guy, and I'm also a "get off my lawn" guy. But I've been eyeballing these little Revv20's too for the past year. I haven't taken the plunge...yet. But it seems like a no brainer to at least give one a try. Now get off my LAWN!!

I got the G20 almost 2 months ago. I am not disappointed. Just the ability to have a silent tube amp with headphones makes it worth it.

Since no one in the house appreciates the Fender amp past, say 1, I recently purchased the Two-Notes Captor X. It's really nice to use my amp and headphones-Ableton input too. Keeps the peace around here I suppose. I must admit all of the mic, speakers, cabs options are a little overwhelming. I have to be careful to remind myself to sit and play, not sit and get lost in software. Another great video!
Being from the north of Essex in the UK I'm lucky enough to live very close to where Victory Amplification is based. Their little heads share some features with the Revv stuff, although they've yet to release anything that has IRs built in. When I had an isolated bungalow on a farm to live in I was quite happy lumping big amps & cabs around but after I moved into a flat about five years ago that became less practical. The Victory Duchess, Sheriff, Red Dwarf and Countess have either passed through, or are in, my hands since the move. Well worth checking out if small amps with some kind of power scaling is your thing.

Revv is really a 1 amp solution. I sold (almost) every amp I owned now that I own a REVV generator. My Peavey invective was almost that amp but the REVV checks every block. My only other amp is the Peavey classic 20 mh. It is also a great amp that checks every box.

It's a neat little package and I'm sure it's well made etc but for someone like me it's a little too complicated - Impulse Response is a term I increasingly hear ,but I haven't a clue what it actually means tbh. I own some older recording stuff (Tascam 2488 MkII , Alesis monitors etc) but haven't owned a computer for years . 👍
The D20 is pretty simple really. And if you're recording it makes capturing ideas easier than taking the time to put up a mic etc. But everyone's needs are different. If your rig works, that's the best.

I saw this amp in a music store down the street a few weeks ago and told myself that this is the future of music. I'm 69 yr. old. Believe it or not everything has gone full circle in the past fifty years and is becoming simplified again.
I agree. Small amps are back to stay I think. Five watts at home and 10 to 15 for any gig.
