its more a western thing, or a rural thing. I actually have a rodeo at the county fairgrounds here every year in pennsylvania. but like tractor pulls, its more a rural thing. but you will see more of them in places like texas, wyoming, oklahoma... places with cattle ranching history. I 'm half convinced that it started because some cowboys were bored.

My brother-in-law was a bull rider, he quit after he married my sister, he said it wasn’t fair to put her and their future children through the stress and possibility of losing his life. Lane Frost was his cousin. FYI, to call it a “ride” you have to ride the full 8 seconds and then you are given a score. Half of the rider's score depends on the performance of the bull and how difficult he is to ride. The other half is scored on the rider's ability to stay balanced on the bull and coordinate with the bull's movements. The rider and the bull are randomly matched before the competition. Higher-ranking riders are allowed to choose their bull but that can depend on where the competition/rodeo is held and the judges.

@@jodeeps2287 bull riding definitely takes a certain breed of person it's no joke. I was just thinking about it earlier about the times they get to choose their bull alot of them pick one they know they can ride but JB Mauney kept picking Bushwacker and he finally conquered him. The JB v Bushwacker reminded me of Lane v Red Rock if I remember right when Lane rode him the full 8 seconds he was the first to ever ride the 8 and it was actually like 9.63 seconds officially, and ended Red Rocks unridable streak of 311 attempts. He told me the rodeo was like a family business, all the young men participated from an early age.
He told me there were two ways out of it, getting badly injured, or what he did, which was to join the Marines. For safety! He said he had a lot of sprains and breaks, in the rodeo. The Marines was fine.

Rodeo, including bull riding, is more of a western thing than a southern thing. It is based on "cowboy culture" rather than location. For example, look at a map and Texas looks southern, but it has western culture and is never considered to be part of "the south." Montana is totally north but the culture is western cowboy every bit as much as in Texas. The western leaning cowboy culture is based on the fact that big cattle ranches are in the western states. You can't have a strong cowboy culture without cattle.

I've always loved watching PBR (Professional Bull Riding) since I was a kid. I took my daughter to a couple of local rodeos as she was growing up. My daughter is 29 and an EMT for 2 different ambulance services. One service that she works for does stand-by for the local amateur rodeo (The Manawa Rodeo in Wisconsin) and my daughter will always work during the 3 day event. Unfortunately this last July the rodeo was canceled due to the town's dam breaking. The rodeo crew stayed behind and helped with evacuations of people and animals. They also donated food and water to those who were displaced since the rodeo vendors wouldn't be selling it at the rodeo. People in the rodeo circuits are very close (like family) and their animals are extremely well taken care of and loved despite what some believe.

It would then be elevated off the ground and each rope tied to a tree or post. You would then get on the barrel and grab the rope they tied around it like the rope around a bull to hold on while 4 men would manipulate the ropes causing a bucking motion and side to side action! Really surprised they didn't cover the better known wrecks. The goal is to stay on the bull for 8 seconds, holding on with only one hand. You can't use your second hand at all. The bull gets a score and the rider gets a score. Despite what the commentator said, the bulls are not wild, they are born in captivity. They also don't have malice, they simply want to be left alone to do bull stuff. Instead, they are brought into an arena with thousands of people, bright lights, and loud speakers to have a person strapped to them and a flank strap pulled across the most sensitive part of their body, not to mention the spurs used to dig into their flesh from the shoulder to their flanks. They simply want to get out of the situation they have been put in.

I once went to a senior pro rodeo. There were calf ropers as old as 72, but the oldest bull riders were only 55. I wondered if perhaps bull riders don't live any longer than that. I'm happy to say that Richard Hedeman is still alive at the age of 60, but then he retired from bull riding when he was only 35. One of my co-workers went to bull riding school on leave from the Navy, but he concluded that he wasn't coordinated enough for the sport. I think he's too large a man for it. He's over 200 lbs., so he'd be better suited for steer-wrestling, though that requires considerably more capital investment. Small men tend to do a lot better at bull riding than large men. I'm not sure all the physics behind it, but statistically that's the case.

I've always told my doctors the moment they say no horses or riding, just put me on my horse and blue juice me. This last year, I've had too many injuries and surgeries, (not from the horses) nearly died given a 2% chance of surviving and all I could do was watch them from my bed. The docs now say, 'remember your goal to get well enough to ride again'.🤠

There are Rodeos with bull riding all over the US, but the biggest ones are in "cowboy country"- or where there are ranches and cattle. Rodeos have all sorts of events including little kids riding sheep called muttin busting. Bull riding is the biggest event but there are many other categories which are fun to watch. These bulls are actually raised for this and the big, bad boys are worth A LOT of money. There are bulls from many years ago and their names are still remembered. Bodacious is one.
The last Rodeo that I attended was in New Jersey. Certainly, not cowboy country!

I saw a rider die in an event in 1992 or 1993 at a local event. He got hung up as he was thrown from the bull and was dragged and stomped for more than two minutes before they could get him freed. His hand was stuck in the rope and he was dragged against the fence and all over the arena.

Lane's life was so inspirational that it was made into a movie, "8 Seconds", starring Luke Perry. Perry went through all of the training required for professional bull riders. Lane Frost's friends and family said watching Perry was eerie, and that he seemed to embody Lane's spirit. Even after the movie was released Luke Perry continued to ride and was a regular on the circuit.

If it hasn't been said, bulls buck because the rope behind the rider is squeezing the "tender vittles" of the bull. He is trying to get that off along with the rider. The thing is, the bulls know it is a sport. When they aren't in an arena, with that rope on, they are just a bull in a pasture. They get all the bovine tail they want if they are an especially good retired bucking bull. I may not be 100% correct on all but I am fairly sure I am close.
