Right on. Ask the Redcoats how proportional We were. The rest of the world seems to forget We determine what is acceptable. There's a reason We have a larger military budget than most nations GDP.
"Radar lock" means that the radar has stopped scanning the entire area, and is now focused directly on you. This means that the weapon they're most likely about to fire at you will know exactly where you are. You can tell that this has happened because the frequency with which the radar signal hits you will significantly increase. A related term is "weapons lock", which means basically the same thing, but usually refers to the seeker head on a weapon, instead of a radar dish... and it might not be using radar to find you, as some weapons use infrared seekers to find their targets.
or more likely it means a fire control radar (a type of radar whose sole purpose is guiding weapons to the target) has the 'lock'. It's kind of like a lazer pointer for missiles. It's actually considered an act of war to lock your fire control radar on a target without provocation or authorization. Some radars can be multi purpose and be a search/track/fire control radar, but there aren't many.
Besides Heat Seeking there are four/five other types of missile homing, Radar Homing (Active and Semi-Active, ARH & SARH), Anti Radiation (HARM, locks onto radar emitters, like SAM sites), GPS (for cruise missiles or other long range missiles), or visual (which is usually used in the final attack phase after one of the other guidance options have got them close to the target)
This. Some of the 70s radar they were using can only scan 360 degrees like 4 times per minute, and get that down to like 45 degrees and you’re getting a new scan every couple seconds.

I was there. The tanker escort mission was called Operation Earnest Will. When we would enter or leave the gulf through the Straits of Hormuz, Iran would light us up with their Silkworm missile radars. And steaming around in mined waters is rather nerve-racking. I was on the USS Merrill (DD-976), SAG B, during this engagement. We gave them a 15-minute warning in English, then farsi (we had a CT onboard who spoke farsi), then in English, then in Farsi, then he finished it with, "Have a nice day." Of course we all cheered at that. Afterwards, we gave them a 10-minute warning, a 5-minute warning, then we told them, "We are opening fire, is everyone off the platform?" They said, "We are not leaving." So, we opened fire. We fired 2 rounds before they fired back with a 22mm chain gun. Our Fire Controlman took care of that with one shot, as Nic said. Yes, he was THAT good. We were supposed to fire 5 or 10 rounds, then the Lynde B. McCormick was supposed to do the same. We were supposed to trade off until finished. We wound up doing all the shooting on the Sassan oil platform because Lynde B. McCormick's gun had dropped sync and was "walking" and they couldn't fix it in time. After the engagement we had a joke: How does the Ayatollah inspect his fleet... Glass Bottomed boat. The Soviet Udaloy destroyer was gathering intel. A few minor details wrong, but it doesn't detract from the story and NO ONE gets ALL the details right.. I love Nic's presentation. I've seen most of his videos and they are awesome.
It's awesome to hear a eye witness account with more details and to hear that his version is darn close to being accurate. Thank you for your service. ❤
If you think Raegan was a bad ass western leader, look at Charlemagne. The guy who United the Germanic people. Stopped 1k yrs of civil war, United a continent and defended the west from invasion, thoroughly. They created a system around how he did it, they called it Monarchy. The ironic part is Karolus Magnus was an exceptional family man, book work. And history nerd. He got off on knowledge. Ofc a system built around an exceptional character will continue to require that. Thus 2k yrs of suffering under kings and queens who couldn’t sniff that dudes farts
I served in the navy under Reagan from '82 to '88. Reagan loved peace, but you didn't want to fuck with us under his watch. Remember, this guy helped defeat the Soviet union. He knew that the Soviets couldn't maintain an all out arms race with America, and feed its people at the same time. To up the ante, Reagan proposed a space based anti-ballistic missile defense system popularly known as Star wars, causing the Soviets to collectively shit their pants. Their people were standing in bread lines while our people didn't even notice the increase in military spending. We were too busy shoving steak and lobster down our pie holes to pay any attention. Reagan even gave Gorbachev a helicopter tour over a vast area of American suburbs to show off how well we're living, and to give him an idea of what he was up against. Reagan was a badass, that's why we in the military loved him.
I’m glad you love him, but you do realize he’s the reason we don’t have healthcare, social security is crumbling, our energy sector is light years behind other developed countries, our public education system is screwed, the massive inflation, and why your IRA and 401k are capped. He initiated his Trickle Down Economic policies to give all his rich friends the breaks and foist the cost on the 99%. Reagan’s policies had such negative and far reaching consequences we’ll probably never get out from under them. But yeah, other than that great president.
Full agree, Reagan won us the Cold War. Not singlehandedly, a lot of work went into things beforehand, but he sure drove the nail in the coffin. I love that he held the War Games to push the DEFCON almost all the way down just to make a point to the USSR that the USA was ready to throw down and would win in Europe if Ivan tried anything. Thank you for your service, all those who served admirably are badasses, but the 1980s to early 90s squad may be the most badass we've had since WWII. Are you familiar with Tom Clancy? Have you read or seen The Hunt for Red October or read Red Storm Rising? Absolutely phenomenal fictional works that were pristine with the technology side of things. Shows a pretty good depiction of what you would have been up against if things heated up with Ivan.
4:40 Ronald Reagan was very adamant about his beliefs. Of all the presidents from Lyndon Johnson to Bill Clinton, Reagan was the guy you wanted to mess with the least.
I don't think LBJ belongs in that list. Ignoring politics but based simply on their actions; Johnson escalated the Vietnam War, which was a huge mistake, but it was definitely the result of being a bit too anxious to blow shit up. He was famous for **literally** throwing his manhood around.
Yeh he and Maggie got on very well probably the last two honest politicians to ever lead a nation. You could disagree with them and many did but at least neither of them would piss on you and try to convince you it was raining.
As an FYI here: Ronald Regan started off a Hollywood Actor, specifically in westerns, and when he ran for President against Carter, the hot topic of the election was the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Basically, some Iranian dudes who supported the Iranian Revolution stormed the US embassy and took everyone in it hostage. Now, Carter was like 'look, let's talk it out, we can come to an agreement', while Regan made a definitive statement on the air 'If the hostages are not returned by the time I am sworn into office, my first act as President of the United States will be to invade Iran and get our people out of there by any means', playing up to his cowboy persona. As we can see from him being in office, Regan won. Didn't invade Iran, though. The hostages were let go on the day of his inauguration. So yea. Regan already had a legit beef with Iran, this just doubled down on it. That's why Regan, specifically, being the president in office made this even more *Chef's Kiss* of an issue.
A big reason why Reagan won was just because Jimmy Carter was the most hated president in American history…until the corrupt old dipshit took office on Jan 20, 2021.
@@metroidhunter965 Naw, there were several who were hated much worse. Hoover, blamed for the Great Depression. Nixon, and the Watergate incident that caused such a kerfluffle, then Ford for pardoning him after getting made VP by him before he left office, making him the only president not elected into an office, and who also nearly started WW III over a tree. By contrast, Carter was simply mildly disliked. Keep in mind, polarization was much less severe back in those days, so 'the other guys' were not immediately either 'literally the political party in Germany in WW II' or 'the claimed economic system of the USSR and PRC' depending on your political affiliations and who was elected. Neither word I think UA-cam appreciates being used, which is why I used a more roundabout way.

I put it to you this way: During the Reagan administration a young marine got lost on his way back to post in SoCal and missed his turn off. At this point he was committed and ended up on the Mexican border. The US side said “no worries just go up there turn around and head home.” However once he crossed he was seized my Mexican officers and arrested. When Reagan found out about it he didn’t negotiate, he didn’t barter. He simply told the Mexican government: “Give me back my Marine or I’m sending SEAL Team 6 to go get him.” The marine was returned to the border the following day.
When you say "Mexican Officers" I think that they weren't actually officers. Mexico doesn't really have a government, its a hostile cartel that's been quietly invading the wall-less border since 2020.

One of the pillars of Ronald Reagan's foreign policy was "Peace through Strength". In his own words ... "We know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak. It is then that tyrants are tempted."
Which is what the US has going on right now with this JoBama clown occupying the White House. This nation can't take an Obama fourth term. His/her third term has to end this Nov. 2024.
Ronald Reagan came out during a press conference and said (paraphrasing of course), "there are 9 words that you should always be afraid to hear and they are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help". Reagan had a sense of humor even tho he had the old school dad energy.
Watch The Fat Electrician's video on Operation Paul Bunyan to see what happens when the US decides not to be "proportional" in a conflict. We deployed nuclear-armed bombers to cut down a tree (and make a point to North Korea). And, yes, Reagan was known for being a bit of a hawk.
Now you need to watch The Fat Electrician talk about the Barbary Pirates & the start of not touching Americas boats. Nick (T.F.E.) has some awesome stories every one of them are learning moments. Great reaction sir. He also did a couple of videos on members of the British military, that you might enjoy.
One of his videos I cannot recommend ENOUGH is the story of Cassius Marcellus Clay, or according to Nic, the most gangster politician in American history
Ronald Reagan was elected president while the American embassy hostages were being held in Iran. They were held for 444 days, while President Carter tried a couple of unsuccessful times to rescue them. Iran suddenly released them on the day Reagan was inaugurated. They knew he would be extremely proportional in getting the hostages back here.
4:30 Ronald Reagan was firm about his beliefs and a no non-sense leader. It was better to be friendly with him then to be his opponent. i.e. he did not back down and did not lose a game of chicken. The Iranians got the best of Jimmy Carter during the hostage crisis but that sh*t ended shortly after Reagan became President and he would go on to stand toe to toe with the Soviet hardliners, but then was one of the first to be friendly with them once they came around. For all the Brits reading this, he was also the one that ordered an operation into Grenada without informing the "Iron Lady" herself Margaret Thatcher.
The attack on the first oil platform occurred at about 8 AM, and the attack on the last frigate took place at 5:15 PM, So it was all a full day's work.

Yes the locking the radar is focusing the radar beam on a target so a weapon can follow the beam to the target. Think of radar like a flashlight, yes you can see things with a flashlight but also everyone else can see that flashlight in the dark as well. There are different types of radar frequencies too so the radar that just sweeps looking for other ships is different than the frequency and type used to target an object and the US ships have the equipment to tell the difference between is it just normal tracking radar so you don’t bump into someone else or is it a weapons radar used to guide missiles.
To add to this, RADAR operates in several modes depending on what you're doing. Most of the time, it's in a mode known as search. Essentially, the radar sweeps by, illuminates something, and it's position is updated. Using the above analogy of flashlights. Search is like waving your flashlight back and forth slowly in long arcs. You get modest updates to the environment around you every few seconds, but anything moving may suddenly be in another spot on your next pass. In a LOCK, it's exactly the same as stopping the flashlight 'sweep', and just aiming it at the object of interest. Now, its position is updated continuously. Important if you're trying to get an accurate firing solution for a gun or missile. Especially if you're dealing with something fast and maneuverable, like aircraft. You don't want to see where it's gone every three seconds when three seconds enough to rip half a mile across the sky. Not when you're trying to aim at it. You want a continuous update to every move the target makes. In modern combat, being RADAR locked is pretty much the universal language of 'I am about to ruin your day/career/life'. And anyone with half a brain knows to take that threat seriously. Usually, by knocking off any posturing they've been doing, or opening the F up with their own weapons. In this operation, the US Navy knew that lock wasn't being done to try and warn them off, and unloaded.

Locking radar is when a weapon that uses a radar return signal for it's aiming is armed and aimed at that signal. This radar transmission can be seen on a receiver by the person it's pointed at. As soon as the Iranians pointed their radar at the American ship to aim their weapons, the Americans instantly knew it. That is the same thing as pointing a firearm at someone... it is an act of aggression and a threat.
The Iranians weren't thinking. A 23mm AA gun shooting a destroyer is like shooting a bull with a .22lr. Will it kill it? Not likely. Will it piss it off and make it want to kill you? Absolutely
Samuel B. Roberts is also the name of a ship from WW2 that was a escort destroyer whose task group named Taffy 3 that accidentally fought off the entire Japanese Armada which included Yamato. Taffy 3 consisted of just 3 Destroyers, 4 Escort Destroyers, and 6 Escort Carriers. Center Force for the Japanese Armada consisted of 4 Battleships, 6 Heavy Cruisers, 2 Light Cruisers, and 11 Destroyers. They managed to sink 3 of those Heavy Cruisers. But unfortunately, Taffy 3 in turn lost all 3 destroyers, the escort destroyer Samuel B Roberts, and 2 of their escort carriers. Look up The Battle off Samar. Sammy B distinguished herself in this battle as the "destroyer escort that fought like a battleship". Yeah America was NOT gonna lose another of her name.
Ronald Reagan was a former Hollywood actor who was a "f around and find out president". He earned the nickname "Raygun Ronnie" when he announced a Star Wars sky defense system for the U.S. and would have surprised no one if he'd let loose a nuke or two. Sort of a combination of Trump and President Harry Truman (who bitched slapped Japan twice with a nuke), all of whom wouldn't take crap from the rest of the world.

Ronald Regan was the U.S president that heard a pop during one if his speeches. He glanced up said missed me and went back to his speech. Just for a little context in who he was
Radars have diffent modes for different purposes. Fire control radars generally have a couple of modes, one is search mode; they other is fire control mode. The signal sent by the radar during the two modes is VERY DIFFERENT and it is exceptionally clear when they are planning to fire a missile. Missiles cannot be controlled in search mode, only in control mode. So when you're receivers show that the adversary's radar is in control mode that is a clear sign of hostility.
The full quote from Reagan is a warning against the military industrial complex and he says "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm from the government, and I'm here to help'"
You definitely shouldn't edit out his ads and intros or his endings. He more often than not has post credits content, and his ad reads are either short and to the point or really funny and add to the video.
They got really lucky cooler heads won this discussion because without sending in a single soldier the US could have exterminated everything and there would have been basically nothing they could have done to stop it.
He didn't talk about this bit there is a very specific logic behind the targets that the navy chose. The problem here was that Iran was mining international waters. The objective of Operation: Preying Mantis was to eliminate Iran's capacity to do so. Iran was using their two modern frigates to lay the mines, and the oil rigs to store them prior to laying. The objective was to eliminate Iran's capacity to lay mines in international waters. It just happened that Iran was dedicating HALF of their naval force to that task, and our objective was to simply destroy anything involved in laying mines in international waters.

At 2:48 in your rection... The Samuel B. Roberts has a VERY DISTINGUISHED name in the US Navy. It's the proud holder of the legacy of a destroyer escort named the same that charged the Japanese main battleship fleet in October of 1944 in defense of Taffy 3. One turret of one battleship weighed more than that destroyer escort and yet it charged straight at them. See The Battle of Samar for more... Honor to the Johnston, Hoel and the Roberts for their bravery!
Ronald Reagan was small midwestern town during the great depression batshit. He is the guy that blew out the defense budget for a decade chasing SDI, a theoretical system armed with an array of space-based X-ray lasers that would detect and deflect any nuclear warheads headed toward the United States.
The number of times that a country has attacked American ships that lead to them getting their asses handed to them in a war is a bit funny. Its like you think people would have learned by now. But nope Hoothis did it not too long ago as well.
10:35 Fun fact, the phrase "point blank" has a very specific definition. When firing a gun, the bullet will travel in a straight line, up until a certain point. Where exactly that point is depends on a wide variety of other conditions, but what matters is that beyond that point, the trajectory of the bullet will begin to trend downward toward the ground and you will have to account for that when you're aiming, if you're beyond that point. "Point blank" refers specifically to that maximum range, that range before you have to account for bullet drop, that maximum range at which you can just center the crosshairs on the target, pull the trigger, and score a direct hit

Ronald Regan was the original 'Fuck around and find out' President for the Modern Age...
FAFO
That is exactly what I just said
If you think Raegan was a bad ass western leader, look at Charlemagne.
@@chuch541 crude but true.
And then he fucked around with the economy and the middle class has been finding out for 40 years
I served in the navy under Reagan from '82 to '88.
Personally as far as modern presidents not to be messed with I’d have to say Reagan and ford tie for that spot given operation Paul Bunyan lol.

That's why Regan, specifically, being the president in office made this even more *Chef's Kiss* of an issue.
well described.
@@ShneekeyTheLost I don't know what world you are living in Carter was fiercely despised as the worst President in U.S. history until now with Bumbling Biden blowing Carter off the map. Yeah that's right we gave both of them lots of OUR money not to fight each other. BTW, you misspelled Reagan. Unfortunately, I know Carter personally. Nice guy but sucks as a leader. I first met him when I was in high school when he was a State legislator, then again when he was Governor and my Dad was the mayor of our city and we had him over for dinner a couple of times. I was literally going to say Margaret thatcher with nuts
Don't need to imagine. Just look how she reacted when Argentina messed with the UK's rock collection in the Falkland Islands.
He simply told the Mexican government: “Give me back my Marine or I’m sending SEAL Team 6 to go get him.”
The marine was returned to the border the following day.
When you say "Mexican Officers" I think that they weren't actually officers. Mexico doesn't really have a government, its a hostile cartel that's been quietly invading the wall-less border since 2020.

Everyone's gangster till the US Navy hits the high seas
Factsssss

"This big dog will fight if you rattle it's cage"
...sometimes it'll fight if you look at it wrong

Locking radar is when a weapon that uses a radar return signal for it's aiming is armed and aimed at that signal. This radar transmission can be seen on a receiver by the person it's pointed at. As soon as the Iranians pointed their radar at the American ship to aim their weapons, the Americans instantly knew it. That is the same thing as pointing a firearm at someone... it is an act of aggression and a threat.
If memory serves the Iranian vessel was also the one that fired first.

Ronald Regan was the U.S president that heard a pop during one if his speeches. He glanced up said missed me and went back to his speech. Just for a little context in who he was
If I remember correctly, that speech was after the assassination attempt.
