  • It's easy to get caught up in the specs, but in the end there are two primary differences between the VI and the V -- which taken together just might make it the best street photography camera of 2018.
    Maybe.

    Sony made this camera for me. After being disappointed with the photos from my Canon Powershot S100 (a well-regarded pocket camera in its day) taken on a trip to Peru, I launched a search for a better travel camera. Tried a Nikon D5600. Great camera, fabulous super light AF-P lenses. Not pocketable. Tried Fujifilm X100F. Great camera, APS-C sized sensor quality, not all that pocketable, but still small enough to easily travel with. However, no telephoto, unless you want to call a 50mm equivalent attachment a telephoto, and I have to say I am a telephoto guy, no getting around it. I think this new Sony is the travel camera for me. Good enough telephoto range. Should be a substantial improvement in image quality over the S100. And great video, something I find myself doing more and more of. After playing with it for a day I can say that if one wants to use it as a simple point-and-shoot travel camera, it is a bit of an overkill considering the plethora of features, but the photos should be pretty good. The little gripes people have about it, mostly having to do with changes from the previous model, mean very little to me. I have never used a neutral density filter in my life and I have been making photos for more than sixty years. I agree, they will "sell boat loads of them."

    I think your conclusions regarding the target use, and the attempt to bury the 4/3 sensor are spot on. It will be a great street camera, although I will admit to some disappointment with the f2.8 max aperture, and I may consider it for that purpose. I've carried the Mk. IV around with me on countless business trips and it's served me well for those opportunistic moments that inevitably come up, even if the batteries choose the most unfortunate moments to run out (I try to carry around a spare in my pocket and at least, ironically, they are small enough to do that). But, as noted before on here, one of my (admittedly highly personal) uses of the Mk. IV is for video of my son's baseball games where the lens fits perfectly through almost all nets and the 24-70 is wide enough to take in both mound and batter, and long enough to isolate the action at home. Because of this the built in variable ND was important to me when I purchased it, and from my perspective I find its omission in the Mk. VI both perplexing and a missed opportunity. I may be wrong but I have a hard time believing that the new lens forced the change and somehow I suspect that when it appears the Mk. VII may end up with this feature restored. Which would likely lead to another incremental price hike. Ya gotta love marketing decisions and, if I do end up buying it, I strongly suspect I will keep the Mk. IV for both the the nice bright f1.8 and the ND filter, which might mean both of my pockets being full (they won't have much money left in them after all).

    As a Mark 3 owner I was hoping Sony would go the other way and put on a wider lens like Nikon was going to do with their 18-50 DL. I find myself at the 24mm equivalent too much to give up a stop of light there. Maybe next year. 😊

    I have a Sony HX90v as a pocket camera which does a great job in spite of its small sensor, I wouldn't spend 1200 on a pocket camera. That's what I spent for a near new 6300 with a kit lens that will fit easily in my cargo shorts. I would like to play with this camera for a weekend though. Good show!

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 років тому

      J.R. Regenold many people don’t know about the HX90v.- incredible zoom range in what is essentially an rx100 body with smaller sensor. Our smallest camera (other than our iPhones, which we use as well) is in fact our a6300 - fantastic IQ, and as you mention an ILC. Our current favorite lens for it is our 24-105, but the lens alone costs more than the VI and much bigger. Clearly, this is a trade off we continue to make.

    • @j.r.regenold9094
      @j.r.regenold9094 6 років тому

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions I do mostly video with separate sound. The 6300 is great. I use the kit lens, but always in search of bargain glass. The little HX90v is great. I often mix shots from it in production and it's not easy to tell the difference once it's all rendered out to 1080p/24fps.
      I have watched several of your programs ... have cleaned much good info, thanks again. Subscribing today.

    Great video, as usual, Hugh. But honestly, I have an RX100M2 with the separate viewfinder and I can't see a compelling reason to upgrade, especially as I don't shoot video. Unless I need something ultra small to slip into sport coat pocket, I'm frankly more comfortable shooting with my D-LUX (Typ 109) when it comes to compacts.

    I'm disappointed... I don't need super fast AF or 24fps for my pocket camera.. I need good battery life and good low light performance. Pocket cameras this size are for nights out, concerts, weddings times where you don't want to carry a bag.. I'm not going to be able to get any subject separation at all. $1200 is a lot of cash for photos that most likely be indistinguishable from the 6 year old rx100 for $300. Not to mention the new triple camera iphone/smartphones launching this year...

    They made an expensive travelzoom. That might take on their own HX series and Panasonic's TZ one, which come in much cheaper. Might be a somewhat bigger sensor inside, but because of the zoom the light sensitivity drops down from fairly sensitive to hardly having an edge over normal travelzooms. There's a front-facing touchscreen (still no fan of their touch implementation, but alas), but there's no hotshoe, nor is there a microphone input. Don't know about this one... it's really a particular kind of person willing to cough up that kind of do$h for a camera that combines that kind of zoomrange with a somewhat large sensor in a very compact package.
    Myself? I'd wait for a LX100 successor. Loved that thing. If Panasonic could make a sub-$1k LX200 with front-facing touchscreen, hotshoe & mic-input, roughly keeping that f/1.7-2.8 sensitivity, that would be my go-to carry everywhere camera. Same actually goes for the GX80/85, that is one brilliant camera, with a Leica 15mm f/1.7 it's about the same footprint as the LX100. But you get the full 4/3" sensor and interchangeable lenses. But again faces the exact same problems of the LX100 for video use. I understand we can't have it all, because these manufacturer's are in the business of selling us cameras, not granting our wishes, but still... would've been nice, ey?!

      If you will never need to shoot for more than -- or close to -- 30 minutes at a time using the camera's own internal capability; do not need the best IBIS out there; and don't mind the size of the bigger, more expensive glass, get the A7 III. Otherwise, get the GH5. :)

    • @osaspro
      @osaspro 6 років тому

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Thanks!🙂...I am more concerned about the image quality and the better over all easy of use for a low budget movie.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 років тому

      4K image quality on both is exceptional. The GH5 is easier to use. The a7 III will be better in very low light, but unless you're shooting above 12,800, the GH5 will be fine. Root around our channel, and you'll find that test. You can also rent Veydra Mini-Primes in MFT mount, and they are LOVELY and inexpensive. Then again, if you're going to rely on AF, a7 III all the way.

    • @osaspro
      @osaspro 6 років тому

      Cool...Thanks again.!! leaning towards the GH5 :) ...You prefer the Veydra Mini over the Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm/42.5mm both at f/0.95.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 років тому

      I love the Noktons -- they were ALMOST enough to make me get the GH4. Glad I waited. Depends on the look you're going for, how you're lighting, and whether or not you're going to be pulling focus. Since both are manual focus, that does reduce the advantage of the Veydras - but they'll be easier to rack focus with, and you may find that you wouldn't actually use the Noktons at 0.95. The Veydras are T2.2, as I recall.

    I would be sad to see APSC go away, as it is a suitable middle ground for enthusiasts without the budget for FF. I personally hope sony doesn't kill it, though with the way the keep around old camera designs at lower prices, I too wouldn't be surprised to Sony cut this line to reduce lens design costs, and push people to older full frame models.

    Hey Hugh, I know a guy who can sell you some lomotil cheap. That said, it is very interesting to me that 5 years ago I said that if Nikon could advance the technology of that very first 1 in sensor in the Nikon 1, RIP, then this would be the technology of the future camera. I said the same of the A9 sensor, which if you look closely bears a striking family resemblance. Hold that thought!
    I think the 1 in Sony sensor is more than enough for all my future needs, especially travel and street. I think the form factor of the Rx100 line is the reason I am not using it, on the street. What does a street photographer need (IMHO): 2 or at most 3 focal lengths: wide, normal and mild telephoto (28,50,90) primarily because you need to know your sI juhot without looking at either the rear screen or the EVF. That is only accomplished with familiarity. Hold that one too.
    I just did those 3 weeks across the pond and found that my IP8+ was more than sufficient, even at the one location where I thought it would fail, the Pantheon in Rome. If I can get those exposures, with that sharpness out of an iPhone jpeg, then short ot low light indoor sports, the 1 in will be more than sufficient, especially if someone were to make a multi exposure RAW like the DXO One does, also RIP. I have NIGHT photos taken on the grounds of the Louvre that are more than impressive enough to cement them in my memory. (off the Dxo) (side note, the Nikon One and Dxo One failed, so never call your camera "one")
    Only speaking travel and street, for me, I would be happy with a 1in Sony Sensored TBM&E camera that had a Tri-Elmar lens 25/56/90 or an interchangeable lens with 3 primes, which even at f/1.8 would be smaller by far than my Lumix 15mm f/1.7. AND, some physical presence in my hands with manual Leica like controls. Imagine if you will the Leica CL or Fuji XE3 with smaller yet lenses and a flippy touch screen too using the intelligent interface already designed by Leica for the TL or Hassy for the XD... Can you smell the coffee?

      I LOVE this, Dennis! Right on! My sister got me a bunch of Pepto chewables already at the tail end of the debacle - I really am going to change my eating habits on the road. And bring Pepto pre-emptively.

    The VI can do more than the V, but final image quality can't match, unless you're shooting outdoors on a sunny day around 2PM.
    (I've looked at dpreviews image gallery) Annoying.
    I have no upgrade path until SONY makes an RX100VI-b with either the old lens or a new F1.4-2.4 18-50mm lens.

    I would have preferred it if Sony compromised on the lens. Instead of 24-200, they could have made it 24-140, which would still be significantly longer than the previous models. This way, they could have used a faster lens, perhaps 2.0-3.5, which would be helpful indoors. That being said, I'm sure for outdoor use it will be excellent.

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions if they make it like Fuji X70 where there’s shutter dial and aperture ring then it’s easier but it’s mode dial and a bit too small and mainly aim for auto shooter

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions yes, so yeah, still will going for the Leica CL(still going to see what the Mini M will be that going to launch soon this month or so), more solid and well thought camera without compromise, hope I can have that fund for one soon!

    the biggest problem with the VI, is if its mounted you cannot take the battery out. You have to take it off of the tripod. Something so minuscule but so important

    There's a lot to like with the MkVI but will it make me upgrade my Panasonic ZS100? No doubt the sensor in the Sony will have better AF both for stills and video and that flip screen is very useful. Use at higher ISO's is likely to be better than the ZS100 and buffer size much larger too. So what's stopping me dumping my ZS100 and getting this Sony.....the price! The Sony will likely be better in every aspect but is it worth almost three times the price of the ZS100 ( which itself has been superseded by the ZS200 )? I'm not so sure this mkVI will sell it quite the numbers it's excellent predecessors did.Why? Well that longer slower focal is going to put the enthusiasts who yearn for the other high end features offered by this Sony ( S log, etc ) off. So that just leaves it appealing to the average consumer who just wants a light do it all quality camera for holiday snaps and the like. Given the price those consumers will likely be better served saving a lot of money and getting a ZS100. Of course it's not as good, but for the average consumer it's good enough right? They'll put these cameras side by side, 4K video, yup, 20MP 1" sensor, yup. Wide to long telephoto lens, yup. Small compact size, yup. Price....errr...how much was the Sony again? 😊 Nah, I'll take the Panasonic thanks.

      I do not get this complaining of mic and head phone. This is intended as a small camera that is used as is, not a platform for huge amount of accessories. Where would you fix the mic anyway?
      f/2.8 is a trade-of for the longer zoom. Mk V is for those who do not need t.

    • @mrmdpgh
      @mrmdpgh 6 років тому

      Okaro X Fir $1200 it should have a mic and headphone input. Why put a screen in capable of blogging but leave out the necessary inputs to actually blog? This makes no sense especially at this price. 2.8 is fine but it varies to 4.5 which is awful. I believe it goes to 4 at 100mm, terrible.

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 6 років тому

      As I said it is not intended as a platform for accessories. Sony likely has cameras for that purpose also. Well if it was for me, I'd remove the tripod mount also. :-)

      @mrmdpgh 6 років тому

      Okaro X I think Sony fanboys will accept anything from Sony and gladly pay an outrageous amount. I see this with the Sony lenses. Quality seems fine but price is crazy. I can get pretty good 4K/60p video from my phone and save $1200. My phone is smaller than this camera and has a wireless mic and headphone option.

    I have long wondered if Nikon was right with the Series 1 as their toe in the water for mirrorless betting that sensor technology would get good enough to be "consumer equivalent" to larger sensors. Their execution was flawed. As lenses and cameras get smaller, I think (hope) ergonomics and usability will dominate design decisions. Nikon never developed a compelling design approach. Their Series 1 looked like toys for teens. Putting iPhone etc technology into a 1" sensor system camera with bodies big enough to hold and lenses small enough to carry could be a winner.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 років тому

      Clive Moss Agreed!

    • @451804
      @451804 6 років тому +1

      Indeed, the smaller sensor has been let down by also making the camera body smaller. The RX100 series may have a pop up EVF but I can't operate it, much less see anything on it. Take if you will the example of the Lumix G9, much bigger body but it as all the buttons in all the right places for action and wildlife with smaller lenses than almost anything else. What's the flaw in the SONY A7 ? The bodies are too small for the massive lenses required for the sensors. Take the A7iii , drop in a 1in sensor and give me lenses that are about 1/3 the size and even less weight... and now that's interesting. ( I have the drawings ).
