I wish Sony would release a RX 100 M8 already. It's been over 5 years since the M7 came out and it's way overdue for a refresh. The retail price for a brand new M7 should be around a ZV-1 / ZV-1 II's price, maybe a little higher, not 100 bucks below a brand new A6700. 1300 USD is insane for a 5-year old point and shoot camera.
if they will do rx 100 mkVIII with 24-200mm zoom and some how put a coldshoe on it (like they had on mkii) i would sell my A7 iii to buy it

I am interested in the RX-100 VII. We are in 2024 and they are still selling this Sony camera. No one wants to buy a camera, only to find out they finally release a newer model!
Manufacturers have stopped making good compact camera, as people are using mobile phones. However, when travelling using a mobile phone for photography drains it out. Imagine using the phone for sat nav. Smartphone photography is great if posted on social media, but you quickly tell it is n't great quality when looking at it on a large display.
Exactly! A smartphone is a nice add-on for content creators, but will not replace a point'n'shoot camera any time soon. What I don't like about the ZV-1 series ist the limited zoom range. I know, that this has to happen to allow a bigger starting aperture while keeping the form factor, but the depth of field on the ZV-1 series is not shallow enough to justify the limitations in the zoom range. I still hope that once a successor of the Samsung Galaxy Camera will appear. I never owned it, but I liked its concept.

Love the vid! I couldn’t justify the cost for a pocket camera so I bought the Sony DSC-HX80. Respectable specs, fantastic zoom, smaller size and a third of the cost. By far my favorite travel camera!

Thanks for your review, super helpful while I was searching for a compact camera that has tons of pro features and options yet is super compact for personal traveling and family event without having to lug a huge full-frame DSLR setup with lens, etc. Can't believe the prices still have not gone done since its 2019 release date. Still worth it tho.
I bought this camera to compliment my Sony A7CII. I'm a hobbyist photographer and rarely shoot video, so this fit my needs perfectly. I ended up buying a cage, mainly to help with protection, as well as an ND filter attachment. Great review and thank you!
I bought this camera last year for about 1050 USD new. Took it to a couple of places, although it can definitely capture images that are way more natural and rich in terms of color pallette, the small size of aperture f/4.5 at full zoom can lead to dark images, specially during low light.
But unfortunately phones saturate and AI enhance images these days so bad that people (non professionals) dont find real images that attractive anymore, so they think having a smartphone is a better option. This camera is for semi professional photo enthusiasts as it gives full control over parameters that can make the image worth the shot.
My personal preference is Shutter priority mode with auto ISO capped at 5000. I use auto HDR for still subject and DRO for moving subject with auto focus. Zoom is definitely its strength but only in sufficiently lit environment.
I have the M6 and it’s the perfect little travel camera. I don’t think Sony has any competition in this area. Also the prices for the older models has held up really well well.
The price for a camera that isn't up-to-date is what has held me back from buying one. I'd want one for video as much as photography as the ZV-1 I bought just doesn't zoom out far enough for my travel needs. The zoom is quite pathetic compared to my old DSC HX-80 with it's 30x zoom it gives me the reach I require, with being disabled and confined to a scooter or chair I cannot readily walk closer to the subject. A good zoom on a compact form factor is what I am looking for. Any chance of a mark viii any time soon Sony?
I have already had two earlier versions of the RX-100 that went to family members. This camera takes all the drama out of picture taking.
It is unbeatable but for a price.
I got his camera. Im using the Wifi function to transfer photos to both iPhone and Samsung with the 2nd-party proprietary app.
This is sound advice, I travel a good bit and find that I do not take my heavy mirrorless system with me and use my iPhone, images are good but I do agree a good compact camera is better than a phone.
I think so, I use it as my 4K vlog video camera, AND my "zoo camera" since it goes out to 200mm and fits in my pocket. That's a really unique selling point. To my eye, image quality is darn close to APSC cameras. Love the little pop up EVF for sunny days, and the flash is usable in restaurants. Really good camera for traveling. Only thing I'd ding it on is no USB-C and a smallish battery which is a drag, but that's 2019 for ya.
Would love to see an RX100VIII... but I think Sony might be out of that game entirely.
I love my rx100 M7! I keep it in a cage. I will continue to wait for a M8, and hope it will trade the longer reach for a faster lens and/or built in NDs.
I heard or read in some photography forums and on reddit as well that Sony will discontinue its RX10 and RX100 series, as it will focus now in its ZV line of cameras. I think this is true, since from 2012 until 2019, Sony releases yearly iterations of the RX100 series but stopped in 2019.
I bought one of these during this year’s Black Friday sales to replace my Canon g7xii for travel. So far so good, but the menu system and limited touch screen is frustrating!

We’ve got the mark vi and we’re still surprised at its compactness and it’s features and it’s a nice compliment to our a7iii when we travel
I just bought the VII (being delivered in 3 days) for my full time carryon-only world travel so need the small form factor and great quality shots. This VII for photo/some video, ace pro for action video and mini drone for aerial. These should handle everything I need. No more medium/big cameras for me. I did have a hard time finding one of these to buy, they are scarce.
Given the demand for this camera, I’m surprised Sony hasn’t made an updated version. Fingers crossed they will!
Can't speak to the VII. I bought a II, and then, because I wanted a longer zoom, I bought a VI. My Nikon DSLR gathers dust while the Sonys have become reliable pocket cameras that produce excellent images. I'm now in the habit of carrying the VI with me almost all the time. Yes, they were expensive, but so is the latest phone. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

For your opinions, which one better sony zv-1 or sony rx 100 vii for photography & videography? main purpose for travel, is it too bad for videography?

Whoah, your face super fills the frame. I went and checked out other rx100 vii videos and yeah, I guess that's why sony slapped a wider lens on the zv-1f (seems like the zv-1 also still has 24?). But I guess a workaround is to get a stick or tripod/sit the camera down somewhere and back away from the camera and use a wireless mic (or get someone else to video you).
If there is one area where the RX-100 VII (which I also own) shows its age compared to the latest iPhones is the inability to record video in 10-bit HDR straight from camera with no work needed in post. I have become a fan of HDR video after seeing how much of a visual difference it makes on a large HDR display. For the iPhones to be able to do this with Dolby Vision encoding straight from camera and the option to record in Apple Pro Res really shows how much of a difference there is between the cameras.
Hi Gemini, thank you for the video. I am frustrated by Sony seemingly droping the RX line of compacts. Much is said about an iPhone or other smartphones but for travel and zoom, nothing beats a really good high end compact like the RX100. As Sony is still handing them out at events, is there any talk that they may take an interest in the RX line soon and update the RX 10 and 100?
I unfortunately haven’t heard anything about them updating the RX line. I was surprised they were still loaning this camera out. It’s fantastic, and I agree it’s a shame that it hasn’t been updated.
If this camera is “old” what is it missing compared to newer cameras of the same size and price range?
thanks for the review! I rented out this camera for a concert recently to try the picture taking/ zoom as well as to vlog a little. There was some confusion but overall i like it...still not sure if i'll get it since it's expensive but I'm considering it. I want something wide enough and zoom enough for vlogs and something sharp enough for photos. :)

they gave up that extra stop for the range. I wish they hadn't done that with this model :( or do what Canon did; they managed to keep the 1.8 but got 5x zoom.
The price for how old it is is the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger.

@@Gemini_Connect Part of why it feels more expensive is the insane rate of inflation the past 3 years. Although I might try to find a lightly used one. I'm tired of carrying my DSLRs around.
Imagine if the sony rxm8 had internal nd filter like the fujifilm x100vi m, 4k60 or even 4k 120 fps and the newest sony color science and custom luts, if so, it may be the best camera for it size
It’s a good camera but in all honesty I much prefer the Panasonic Lumix TZ200 (ZS200) Better Zoom and I personally think the photos look much sharper and less grainy
I’ve heard so many good things about Panasonic cameras, but haven’t tried them yet. Hopefully one day!
Good to know! I just ordered a ZS200. I didn't want the outdated menu system and the exuberant price of the M7. I'm only worried about the video. Some of the clips I've seen on here are quite shaky. I'm a family man with two young kids so my M43 ILC kit has been getting less use due to it's portability. I hope the ZS200 will fix that. Sony: come out with a M8 already and fix the issues reported in this video!!
I’m thinking of getting a6500 but the RX100 seems like a better camera and easier to carry to boot. How’s the macro photography on RX100 compared to the axxxx series with a cheap macro lens?

Now I am considering to purchase one, as I don't want to lug around my A7RIV with 24-70 lens every time I am on a short holiday break overseas, even though the prices are still expensive :) I was also considering to buy Sony's smartphone Xperia 1 mkV but decided not to as most reviews are lukewarm.
BTW, I also read in some photography forums that the RX100 series will be (or has been) discontinued as Sony will focus on the ZV series. The RX100 mkVII, though still popular with enthusiasts, are now considered as niche by Sony and will not be able to compete with the point-and-shoot smartphone cameras in terms of mass appeal.
I’ve also heard that Sony isn’t focusing on RX100 development, which is a bummer. The ZV line is definitely aimed at vloggers/video creators rather than photographers, and none of the ZV cameras have the crazy built in zoom of this camera. If I were you, I’d try to snag this Sony on sale or used. It is a lot better than lugging around a huge camera if weight and size are of importance to you.
I bought phones for their camera quality but disappointed. Considering buying a Sony RX 100 VII for their size but its too old. Wish for an upgrade.
Does Sony still plan to make new RX cameras? Seems like this RX100 VII and RX10 IV are the last ones and they are really old and out of date as you explained in the video.
Should I upgrade from the M4? 🤔 I am preparing for a 3 weeks trip to Canada (national parks and stuff) and when I last packed my dslm to New York I kinda got backpain carrying the heavy gear around, so I wanted to opt for something a bit more lightweight.

Need your opinion on this... I would like better quality cinematic videos... particularly I shoot adventure videos similar to those The North Face videos... I don't do vlogs... so is this good for really cinematic photos?
Not sure about cinematic photos, but could be good for video. Personally, I’d prefer if it could shoot in 4K60 and S-Cinetone if I really intended to make cinematic videos, but totally depends on your style.

With how good phones like the iPhone 15 Pro have become. I don’t see the reason to buying these point to shoot cameras.
There are many reasons to continue using a dedicated camera, but it depends on how much you value image quality, which will still be superior on a camera like this, especially when zooming in. Also easier to shoot RAW on a camera like this and be able to expand the storage. But my main reason for using a dedicated camera from time to time is I have to worry less - if I break or lose my phone, which is much more than a camera, it’s a much bigger ordeal than doing that to a camera.
The counter hype for Fuji
Fuji cameras are nice in their own way - I own 2 of them. But the compact size and crazy zoom range of this little Sony is hard to beat for overall convenience IMO.
The price is too high.
Perhaps. But a lot of people will gladly cash out $ 1 000 to 1 500 for a good camera phone that will last only a few years. This camera will live for years after that phone is dead or outdated security vise.
