FujiFilm GFX 50s: I Didn't Expect it Be Compelling - But It Is (to me)

- I toyed with the purchase of a Contax 645 once; more recently I tested the Hasselblad X1D. Still, I left the world of full frame when I sold my Canon 5D II to step DOWN to an APS-C Sony a6300 and Micro Four Thirds Panasonic GH5, so I was pretty sure I'd find the GFX 50s unappealing. Especially since late last year I named the Sony a7R III - with full knowledge of the heresy I was committing -- my 2017 "medium format" camera of the year.
The GFX 50s surprised me.

I had the gfx on loan for a weekend, and delivered it back saying to myself -"no, this is not for me"...a month later I bought one with the 32-64mm and the 110mm. And I LOVE it more and more each time I use it :-)
wish more reviews of cameras were like this ... hit the high points of design and usefulness, but then get excited about real photography while placing the "tool" into context .. well done

Great review, I've been shooting with the GFX for over a year now (Since release) and I'll tell you..it is by far one of the best cameras I've ever used. I've shot the Canon 1DX, Sony A7rii, the Pentax 645z, Canon 5d M3 and none of them have helped me evolve as a shooter like the GFX. I will add this, if you are a canon shooter and have significant canon glass and that's keeping you back, don't let it. The GFX has several adapters that allow for the Canon glass to work wonderfully on the camera...heck, right now, the 85mm f1.4 L IS is a constant companion to my GFX.

For the first part of this video I was like look at those skin tones! What is he using? And then you were like I use apsc and gfx is no good for video so I'm thinking this footage does not look like any sony aps c video I've seen especially with that dof. Maybe he is brilliant at post production. I'll be taking a hard look at this system.

I don't know if it's the sensor, the film profile, 1080p, or just the animal magnetism, but I really, really liked the video image quality - even before you disclosed the use of the GFX-50s. Dammit, Hugh! There goes another $10k!

hi great review. Id love to know a little more about the autofocus. Is it fast enough to focus on slow moving subjects such as walking people?
