Thank you for the video. I’m getting ready to enter practice as a young plastic surgeon, which requires meticulous photo documentation. Thus, I am in the market for a new camera without a photography background. I basically need a camera capable of taking good portraits & at times macro shots. The idea of a compact is appealing as I run around the hospital. However, I’m having a hard time figuring out if a compact, even an advanced compact like the MK VI, is sufficient...or do I need a mirrorless device (like an a7iii) with a lens for each duty? Any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Your latest iphone, samsung, or Pixel would do the job for this use-case. What you need are some good lighting and maybe a set at the hospital. That way, your patients would have flattering images. If you don't trust your phone, the RX100 Mk V (not VI) is better as it has a faster aperture thus the background image would be more blurred, with the patient/model more emphasized.
Adding ND filters is easy with the lensmate adapter and actually better because now you can choose which filters you want instead of the built-in 3 stop. This is a really good camera for travel, street, hiking and so on. I don't know why I'd use a tiny high P&S for Vlogging as I'd rather use something a bit higher end for indoor work and more disposable for outdoor work.This is the ultimate travel tool when I don't want to carry the D850 or Z6. Full stop. PS: Learning to tip the flash up for bounce is pretty simple stuff. PS #2: Your expectations for the sensor are unrealistic and the fact is that the 1" does fairly well at higher ISOs, especially if you have good post skills.
Excellent review. I’ve owned all the RX100s (1-5). My RX100 M6 is being shipped on July 10. Give Sony a break for not having the ND on the RX100 M6. If it was technically possible to put an internal ND with the RX100 M6, Sony would have done it. Buy the Sony VFA-49R1 49mm Filter Adapter ring ($20). It allows you to add 49mm filters to the RX100. Problem solved…

Actually the Sony adaptor (copied from LensMate) only works on the Make I and II. Lensmate is working on one that works for the Mk VI but their receiver part (for the Mk V) adds 3mm thickness. MagFilter’s receiver (I think the 52mm should work for the Mk VI) only adds minimal thickness but it holds the filters less securely.

Already have the RX100 mark I and was thinking about trading up to mark VI for the 4K video. I've decided on the A7III even if it is expensive overkill and keep my RX100-M1 as my everyday pocket camera still takes great pictures.

Positive video. Fair and balanced, and if you had been a Nikon or Canon guy, it would have been very negative. I have the VI on pre-order and should get it next week. May come back with comments when I have used the camera. Perhaps adding a lensmate filter might work. Sony could add mic input to their new grip, add software that could take a USB input mic (unless it is possible to do a cabling with USB), or add their microphone unit to the grip itsellf and that would sell well for them, and I would volunteer to demo it.

Quite torn on this and the a7 III, main thing for me is 24 FPS burst seems to be a very attractive feature that most cameras in the price point don't have for action and sports photography. it gets knocked quite a bit because of being compared to pro cameras. But depending on what you're looking for, travel, vlogging, concerts, and convenience, not spending/carrying thousands of dollars in lenses i think there are reasons to get it.

Each photographer has their own needs and wants - but I will say that Sony is doing a good job of trying to make products that tick most of the boxes. Just makes it hard to decide, I guess.

At 200mm no phone is even remotely as good as the rx100
So let’s say I was used to a semi-pro Nikon camera with carrying two lenses, the 18-200mm VR DX and the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Between these two lenses, flash, batteries, dual battery grip, filters, a back pack, a light carbon fibber tripod, a camera bag that wasn’t to heavy for back packing and I had a set up that I considered an acceptable for its time. At most I would only have to change between two lenses.
Then let’s say through uncontrolled events you hit a point in your life that you realized you can no longer use this camera unless it’s always on a tripod between a bad back and Neurological muscular condition, after hanging onto to it for 8 years collecting dust and not using it I final decided to accept reality that this hobby was over unless it was a camera phone, so I sold it. Then this Sony RX100 VI comes out with almost the exact specs for the lens that I had considered a good acceptable setup in the past, but my old body camera was a 12.3MP.
So for me to be able to get better pictures then a phone camera, able to hold the camera without pain, has OIS to help stabilize with muscle tremors then a $1,200 price is a possibility to get back into the hobby. I had more cost tied up in my last kit, and even more when I was a kid using a Pentax K1000 and lenses shooting film.
So going from this previous equipment, do you think the Sony RX100 VI would satisfy me? I know Sony has done some great things with the mirrorless sensors like the IMX series on drones and microscope cameras, and let’s not forget about GoPro cameras also. But if you found yourself in a similar situation, would you be ok using the Sony RX100 VI while having reasonable expectations, not miracles from a small camera but better then a cell phone?
Hi there Scott. Thanks for taking the time to write such a great comment and sharing your personal experience. It's always hard to say whether you'll enjoy the RX100 or not based on your experience. That said, it's worth seeking one out to try. I can say that performance wise and stability too, it's a phenomenal device. I really only miss the depth of field that a larger sensor gives you - like and APS-C or FF. Otherwise, it does it's job well and seems to fit well within what your needs are. Still, holding one in your hand and firing off a few snaps is worth it's weight in gold. - D
Vistek, thanks for your reply and feedback. I made the jump and even holding it next to some APS-C cameras (even Sony’s one) that had too much weight for me, this camera as a great balance with some manual options and features you can’t find on most point and shoot cameras. The advanced features and manual options are great to have in such a small camera with a customizable function menu, unlike changing apps on the iPhone to change the picture/video quality. Since I was used to 2.8 being my lowest stop in my last setup I don’t miss the 1.8, but I was so impressed I bought a used RX100 V because I do like night photography and waned to see the differed. Even with both cameras and batteries this is a much lighter kit then my last one and still cheaper with both, that’s is the M5 being used cost about $425. I couldn’t be more exited to get back into the hobby 9th a EVF and not holding a phone, customize the function menu and I can make them both the same on the MK V and VI.
Added bonus from my old setup, my last one would do only 5 min of video in 720 without auto focus and better built in stereo mics on the RX100. The HFR capture is decent after some trial and error and just a little post editing. I think slow motion is different then photography or shooting video and takes a little time to learn. And to be able to do this at a distance with the zoom range is great.
I’m working on a review from a different perspective as you know I guess. I have some flying red tail hawks and lighting shots pictures to compare with my old setup pictures. Using end trigger after a lighting strike in HFR is nice, even easier to capture it and can pull good still frames from the footage. My review will take a little more time with my health and moving places, but I did release the slow motion HFR video since it’s new for me and something I’m enjoying.

I kinda feel in a similar situation than you. Im 32, and been taking pictures for more than 8 years professionally. I got to the point where I realised that still photography is a hell of a different world than videography/cinematography. I shoot with what I feel comfortable and would never change my Nikon work-horse for those crappy mirrorless old fashioned cameras (for still photography) but still use my iphone 6 more than anything. For video I rather use sony sensors with my old nikon lenses and metabones, but since this camera came out, the only thing I think about is if it would do such a difference in image quality against phone stills.
Don't know if someone mentioned this already but you can use a 52mm Magfilter Threaded Adapter Ring and add 52 mm ND's

Hi Michael, I think the answer would be yes to an upgrade if you needed a longer focal length than the one you currently have and faster autofocus. If those to things aren't important, I suspect you can keep the 5.

Having looked at the RX100MKvi and the new HX99 for 1/3 the price. The decision was easy ...the HX99 gives me what I need. I have alpha cameras for my more serious work.

Hi Sam, I liked the EVF on the mark 6, and I know a lot of reviewers were happy that it is a one step push down that wasn't available in the other cameras. I think the EVF is as good as it needs to be for what the camera is.

I bought a 2nd hand Sony HX90v as a travel and vlogging camera. No 1" sensor, but it does a good job for it's $200 price. At it's near $1200 price, the MKVI would probably not be my choice. Probably would upgrade my a6300 to a 6500 and hang on to my hx90v. Good review .... I think no ND and no mic jack was a big mistake. Also, with all Sony's tech, why can't they invent a hinge?
I love this camera! Great images. Unfortunately I have to trade it in because the audio is the worst experience. Great images/ garbage audio. It would be the best point and shoot out there if the audio matched the visuals. Great review by the way.

Yesterday I bought the RX100Va for "just" 650$..(euro)..so now...i'll be waiting for the new RX100m7 ...1200$ is way too much with knowing that the RX100m7 is comming out soon..? :)
I have the RX100M6 on order (should arrive today I hope) and to answer a question about using filters...I use MagFilters ( mogopod.com/products/magfilter-threaded-adapter-ring ) on my RX100M4 and even the HX90V. The little metallic ring fits both these quite nicely, and it allows me to use 52mm filters with no vignetting. The magnetic linking permits quick change and I think this mitigates the lack of internal ND. IMHO...

I have an update to my post regarding the MagFilter for the RX100M6. I received my camera yesterday and attempted to mount the metal ring I used on my RX100M4. The ring is too small by about 2mm. So we will have to wait for the manufacturer to release a version for the M6, but when they do it will afford a solution to the filter problem of the M6. It works great on my M4, especially for Grad ND in landscape photos.
BTW I also tried to mount my Small Rig cage I use on my M4. The M6 lens barrel is about 2mm larger than the M6, so an updated cage for the M6 will also be required...:-(
Well, I was wrong to say the metal ring that fit the rx100m4 would not fit the m6. It DOES fit! So I can use the MagFilter adapters (52mm) on both m4 and m6! Which means ND filters of any kind can be easily and quickly attached for video or stills...hooray! The only other change is the diameter of the lens barrel next to the body...that is slightly larger and my smallcage for the m4 will not fit...shucks!

I don't think so. Comparing it to the A9, the focal ranges all matched, as did the exposure (within a 1/4 to 1/2 stop).
The sensor on the a9 is way more than twice the size of the rx100

Hi there. I assure you I do not. Super sharp detail is not alway desirable. While taste is certainly individual, in general they needs to be a balance between sharpness and organic roll off and colour rendition.
You can get a magfilter adapter to add filters very easily so why not research things a little before making a video?

All of these 1" camera reviews should start by explaining that a 1" sensor is 13 mm wide not 25.4mm which would actually be an inch.

Yes. A 1" sensor is not supposed to be a professional camera with a full frame sensor. It is still nice to see that it has better high ISO quality than older technologies. There is much progress.

Hello NeoViny, I can assure you Sony paid zero dollars for this video. Vistek paid for all production costs and I solely decided on the content and the message. In every video I try to be as honest and as non-partisan as possible. I do however try to create "themes" for each video that viewers can quickly attach to if they're looking for that type of content. When I read the specs of the Mk6 everything about it said "almost pro camera." So I decided to take that angle and see how good it was compared to a pro camera - mostly, and I'm being really honest here - because I was genuinely curious. My hope is that most viewers can see that intent throughout the videos I produce for Vistek. - D
