Glad he mentioned not selling family heirlooms. You will never be able to replace those.
Yup, sentimental value might not be valid on a spreadsheet, but you can't replace it like other line items
i enjoy going to rumbage sales and god, its so sad to see stuff that was clearly important to that family being sold for 20 cents
you arent wrong. wjhen my grandmother passed my dad was the executor and he gave his brother my grandmas hunting rifle and he almost instantly sold it and purchased a new AR. My dad was devastated that he sold a family heirloom over some hundreds of dollars. he said if he could go back he would have paid out my uncle for that gun and kept it in the family.
@the_snopro im sorry to hear that. Some ppl dont associate the belongings of loved ones wt the joy it brought them
An object is an object. Living is more important
I sold my small gun collection a while back because o wasn't working and I needed to get by. I regret it everyday of my life
You could’ve went and hunt for food. I’m not trying to sound like a fool, but that’s what I would’ve done.
@ lol I needed to pay my car payment and insurance and phone bill and utilities and rent
@@Iamde4dinside I'm a hunter and can assure you that it can be expensive to hunt for food, especially for big game which can feed you for some time. You have to purchase a license, usually apply for tags, buy ammo, travel to the hunting area, etc.
Yupp, I had a pretty good collection going. Had a SCAR H, B&T GHM9, AR's, a bunch of handguns. But I lost my job and sold one after another to pay bills. Building the collection back up again, but I have some work to do to get it where it was.
I feel your pain and thank you for sharing your regret. It has made an impact and decision not to sell. My debt isn’t that urgent.
Mr Ramsey I think I speak on behalf of thousands of your followers when I say…we would LOVE a tour of your gun collection if at all possible!

Nice try, ATF.

I'm more used in the vintage wooden waterskis myself.
Trust me, don’t do this! I did it and regret it every day. Now that I am debt free I am chasing those firearms I sold and they are way more expensive now.
If a firearm is a necessity in life, you may have a point. But if it is some form of luxury, I would never go into debt for that, never!
I agree I could not go there , some are expensive and you don’t get what they are worth
LOL why does it stress you out so much to have those guns back?
Lol having more than one gun is excessive if you are broke.
Agreed
We have a gun collection in the low 3 digit range and it includes passed down family guns, we have no debt and yes everyone and anyone always says never to sell them. Guns may not be an investment (stocks or bonds) but they do hold their value and some even go up in price.

Most guns bought in 1980 have doubled in price now.
Dave nailed it.
Especially on if its the worst 10% of your collection vs a significant portion. Plus with them having a plan and doing well, they arent in a desperate situation. If you told me i had to sell the worst 10% of anything id collect, it'd temporarily bother me then I'd be like "eh, those werent that important anyway".
Lets face it. If the worst 10% is like modern AR platform stuff that you can easily buy again, sell it. Then, in one month when you dont have a loan payment, you just pay cash and get something better.
Many of us gun guys never sell guns though. They rarely lose any value anyway.
Do not sell your guns!
I'd generally agree, but there are circumstances selling makes sense. I had to sell some of my gun collection a few years ago when raising money for a house down payment to pay down the interest to 3.5% and eliminate 20% PMI. In any serious collection there are stages and sometimes someone buys everything not knowing what they will enjoy. I certainly had a lot of guns that I bought but had no real fondness for. I've lived under 30 years of the looming threat of gun control around every turn and hate selling guns because they often get harder to reacquire.
I parted with guns I don't miss, cannot recall most actually. It was painful in the moment but ultimately a good opportunity to cull my collection of things I didn't really enjoy, while also being financially smart to reduce the cost of home ownership. There's only 1 gun in that lot I sold that I'd actually like to have back, but it's a minor regret. I kept everything I really enjoy. And I really enjoy having a house, I'm grateful every day!

Good advice for any serious collector. I had many guitars and I got rid of those I reflected on and didn't "love," thinned the heard and also reeled in my collection to a reasonable level :)
most guitars don't go up in value.
firearms go down in value when restored. every single year there are less collectible items available.
Dave is dead wrong on this
I definitely think there are stages in collecting. There is a time where you take in everything. Then you end up having things you don't use. Then eventually you unload the collection when you get older. I am in the early stages of collecting and I met older collectors that sold me their stuff knowing I was a collector that wasn't gonna flip their stuff.

Hey Dave, firearms are priceless.
There was a person on the show who had done this and after becoming debt free, he bought more guns.

If a firearm can not be legally replaced DO NOT SELL IT and conversely if there is a gun that is easily replaced in the future - sell it now and get debt free.

Keep the guns!
Having done this several years ago, I kept a remnant and sold a LOT of what were effectively copies to the untrained eye. There are a few I wished I hadn't sold, but by and large out of sight, out of mind.
If his collection were several Colt-made WWI and WWII 1911 pistols, you can pare that down to a best of, take pics of what you sell for posterity, and cash in. If they're all Forgotten Weapons-level one-off oddities, I wouldn't. Those will appreciate far more than the monetary value realized, and you'll never replace them.
The thought of selling my gun's 🥺
99% of people have no idea how to invest in, or even identify, rare and collectible firearms. 99% of guns will lose value and are essentially nothing more than a tool or hobby piece. But, there is a HUGE difference between buying a production Glock and a significant military overrun or very rare firearm. I have had to sell VERY collectible firearms out of my collection due to my health decline and although they have all made significant money, I loathe the fact that I can and will never be able to replace them. Guns and watches, two very fulfilling things to collect and nerd out on. Also, they are two things people try to collect and later realize they had no idea what they were doing. I was glad to hear Dave talk about this the way he did. He was spot on!
My dad had a project truck he was building and my mom gave him an ultimatum. “Me or the truck”. He sold it, she still left. It’s not always worth it to give up something you love for someone you love because someone that actually loves you won’t ask you to give it up in the first place…. When you sacrifice, make sure it’s something you want even though it sucks. Never make sacrifices expecting reciprocation.
Absolutely NOT.....
Great advice distilled into a digital clip, I really needed to watch this. Thank you!
Never never never. Keep them always. Always. I wouldn’t sell unless I was homeless or couldn’t eat
If you have guns, you can eat
Should consider your age and if someone in your family wants them when you pass. Have known widows with husbands that had major gun collections left to them and they were overwhelmed with how to deal with them.
Dave said if they are not “safe queens” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Basically he is saying “don’t sell your guns” when he compares it to selling your wedding ring YESSSSSS ‼️‼️‼️
Determine which one you'd most want in a home defence situation, sell everything else. Also if you regularly hunt, pick your primary rifle and keep that too.
If I had a gun collection I would sell my wedding ring before I sold my guns especially being that I have a basic ring that can be bought and replaced darn near anywhere depending on the guns as he said they may not be able to be replaced depending on what they are
I once sold a WWII Springfield M1 dated to june of 1944. Granted i flipped the hell out of it and made like $1200 during covid but now to buy it back would cost even more as the M1 Garands have skyrocketed in value for whatever reason. The worst part is I didn’t even have to sell it. I miss that rifle every day. The amount of stories that rifle must’ve had is mind blowing. Its just something ill have to live with unfortunately. I never sell anything I wont miss now. I haven’t sold a gun in a while. If you don’t have to sell them, don’t. Because you will absolutely regret it and buying them back someday will most likely cost more than you originally bought it for and sold it for.
If you can look at your collection, and find the items of least significance, and ask yourself,”Am I willing to go deeper in debt to buy these?”. If not sell them and cancel out that debt.
In addition to the short time horizon, the thing that makes this a unique exception is that it’s an appreciating asset.
I’m personally the type of person to take one last group photo and purge a chunk of them, but it’s up to you to decide if the juice is worth the squeeze.
Dave and Rachel are my favorite people on this UA-cam channel; so entertaining to see them discuss things from different perspectives.

I struggled with selling my 67 impala that was used in a TV show. It would pay off 80% of my debt but it also makes me a extra 35,000 a year doing shows with it. It’s a car that my son loves and we went cross country to get it. It’s literally a 1 of 4 left out there. I decided to take a little longer on the debt and just use the income it brings in and throw 100% of that at the debt. It’s more than a car, it’s 3 years of cross country trips with my son and thousands of fans that see it a few times a year at the shows. The car is paid off so if it ever comes to the car or loosing my house or daily drivers the car will go. But for now it’s spent money that makes me more so I keep it.
Keep the ones you actually use for hunting and target practice.
Also keep any specially sentimental valued ones.
The possibly $2 to $3 million WWII memorabilia collection my father accumulated... all burned in a fire.
Not covered by insurance.
You have to have each item professionally appraised and specifically covered or it is just scrap metal to the insurance company.
I respect the fact that your dad tried to protect and move forward ww2 memorabilia to the next generation. It is our (collectors) duty to save the past. You can't know what we put our 16-18 year old young men (many younger than that, my dad quit high school at 14 to join) through to move our freedom forward. May God bless your father for his efforts even if it got destroyed by a fire. You must be so proud. I would be.
F^ck the insurance companies, they are the scum of the earth.
I have a poor mans collection (72 years) of a miniscule of what your dad had. I wish to pass this on when I die. Maybe a museum would like a few items. It is our duty to save the past as patriots. If we forget the past...
Kinda like tearing down our statues.
We are so far removed from what it takes to save a country. May God continue to bless the USA and your family.
Sad to hear that but I bet most of them survived the fire to be restored, At a loss to value of course.

More than likely yes
IME selling a firearm comes down to 1. Is it sentimental/very rare/borderline irreplaceable? Then no. 2. Do you plan to buy the exact replacement at a later date? If yes to #2 you may as well borrow money to pay off your debt. I say this, terrible idea by the way, because when I sold my not rare and easy to replace arms, the cost to replace a couple years later was more than had I borrowed the money to pay off the initial debt, that is to say the price increase exceeded the interest on NEW borrowed money. These were NOT rare, at all, and did NOT involve a certain world "event" circa 2020.

Saw this and thought to put in my own two cents on this topic. I’m in debt and I have a gun collection. The problem with selling guns to pay of debts as a collector is in my own experience I’ve traded guns to pay off debt and then found a gun I wanted and got into debt to get it. My advice is don’t sell, just stop buying. If you have to sell, sell only what you’re willing to part with.
Don't sell a single gram of your metal.
39K in Debt, In the Grand Scheme of Things That's Pretty Easy to Tackle.(Unless You're in a Hurry) Ramsey Had a Good Partial Answer. Sell the Guns Your Not Fond Of or the Rare Ones .
The example that Dave brought up is what grown ups do
Love you two!! hahahahahhahahaahaah "extensive purse collection"
If there was only one reason I would love to live in the US, it would be to own firearms.
You can live in Switzerland, be part of the army reserve and own a firearm (meaning you get to keep it at home). And Switzerland is a whole lot better nation to live than 3rd world US
@@mathisnotforthefaintofheart "3rd world US" lol. Look we have our problems but we're far from 3rd world. Go visit some 3rd world countries and assuming you make it back alive let me know how it compares.
@@dedalliance1 Go visit some Democrat cities, and assuming you make it back alive, you can edit your comment.
@@kratostomatoes8587 Oh it's not that bad you big cry baby lol.
@@dedalliance1 I readily admit, there was some irony in my answer. Homelessness and radical Christianity aside, the US is a great country and has a lot to offer. But it won't beat Switzerland as a whole (Have YOU been there?). And yes, in Switzerland a lot of men are life long soldiers (army reserve) and they get to keep their rifles at home! Part of their constitution. The Swiss really have their ducks in a row...
This kinda surprised me. I always thought his advice was sell everything, live miserably, and eat nothing to get out of debt. I incurred $200k of debt doing a career change. I'd rather be in debt the rest of my life doing something I love than be debt free doing something that makes me miserable.
I feel bad for that guy, being a gun owner in MD
So few people get that joke...
Yes one of the bad states. Very hard to get a CCW, can’t even protect your life. Who cares if your rich….if your dead .
I regret every single gun I've ever sold from my private collection. Keep all of them.
I've sold many and most I made a profit on.
Odd to have regrets on selling some steel
Those who are willing to give up freedom for security deserve neither.
Thomas Jefferson?
