Terry has beaten Kyo in Asia in popularity polls even before his Smash appearance so the thing about him being only famous in America is not true, the thing about which of the 2 is the face of the company honestly both Kyo and Terry are because they have been representatives of the company in different things, a company can have more than one, for Capcom it was really Megaman only the crossovers gave Ryu more prominence and gave him a mascot status, but when compared to other companies like Sega for example Ryu's equivalent is Akira but he's not Sega's main mascot and in Smash Ryu's technically rival was Little Mac while Megaman was paired with Sonic and Mario the official mascots of Sega and Nintendo in Smash.

He adopted the illegitimate son of Geese Howard Rock Howard, trained him in martial arts and brought him up making him a great dad as well. @@Saintluci92 Nothing about them are similar outside of uppercuts. Art of Fighting created the super move. Ryo had an actual backstory right off the bat, and a goal in the game. He's a flexable character, he loves to fight and wanders for more. The simple and chill vibes he gives off lets him be a classic hero who saves the day or just another competitor in a tournament. Kyo has more of a plot relevant spot in his lore. He can't really be written the same because his clan duties and powers bind him to one kind of story.
As someone who played the kof series and other snk franchises, back in the late 90s and esely 2000s in mexico and other latam countries, I can say Terry wasn't exactly the most famous snk character in the genre, Iori and Kyo were far more popular. Even Kim and Mary. People from the states likes Terry because he is also from the states (and ofc clothing, attitude, voice, whatever), and snk wants people from the states to play the kof series, more than what they used to. It makes sense that they are using him as the face of the company right now.

@@julianchalo then you know my statement it's real haha. No lo dije en mal plan, solo me parece que estan exagerando todo esto de "Terry cara de la compañía "
@@julianchalo That is by Design, because gameplaywise, Kyo was designed to be flashier and more appealing to Terry, Kyo was GIVEN all the cool and varied moveset )Rekkas, juggles, guard points) that is understandably tailored to KOF's aggressive gameplay and given the coolest animation, Terry got comparably flashy in 97 but year after year they reduced or neutered his moveset (making Kyo shine even more) and when KOF 2000 came, basically everything was stripped off of him (no power charge, no firekick, none of those dp punches or kick patterns) regardless of Tier list Terry was far less iinteresting to play, naturally Kyo would be more appealing. But a lot of people I know who played Kyo still preferred Terry as a character overall.
Possibly because that is the nature of KOF. Kyo exists, but the protagonists of SNK keep on changing. He may be the face of KOF, but they pushed Shun'ei as the protagonist. One could argue that Terry isn't a KOF protagonist either and neither is he the protagonist of Mark of Wolves, but one must realise that sometimes, it's just sheer greatness of a character that makes them well known. In FF, he may no longer be the protagonist, but he's the no.2. Didn't lose the spotlight. I do hope Kyo makes it big, but they better repackage him. Another thing to note is that Kyo is a failing highschool student and Terry is, well, a man. Terry has so much going on for him. Mary as a love interest, Rock as an adoptive child, Andy as a brother, Joe and Kim as friends. With Kyo, you got Iori, Benimaru, Chizuru and Daimon. It's different when you got the entire Southtown which is in the same universe as AoF canonically linked to one man. I still do hope Kyo also gets some crossovers, but after a repackaging.
Have said terry IS the true king of fighters. Even his enemies have some respect for him. Love that guy. My main in Smash Hell even bought sf6 cause he's joining
Terry is way more iconic than Kyo. He's talks in Engrish with every move he does, he's very down to Earth, loves to eat and play basketball, and the type of guy who could help a moving neighbor in South Town. He had made successful choices in life as well. Got to spend time with Blue Mary, and taking care of Rock. What did Kyo do? He's a delinquent, has a father and a girlfriend but hasn't been explained much at all about those two, has an admirer named Shingo, who told him to not follow his footsteps. Afterwards, he's pretty much just around. His story arc ended a long time ago. Same with Terry, but Fatal Fury's story wasn't as messy as KOF's. Plus, without Fatal Fury, there wouldn't have been a King of Fighters. Terry is an all round good guy. He reletes to a lot of adults around the world because he's got a normal life and any evil that happens, he'll put life on the life to protect everyone in South Town, even Geese. Terry has always been the face of SNK. He was the reason SNK strived in the early arcades
For the longest time for us Terry fans Kyo was SHOVED down our throats a la Big Dog Roman Reigns so now it feels cathartic that Terry is back in the spotligjht, Kyo is the face of KOF Terry is the face of SNK, first glance Brand Recognition, Iconic cap, Prumary Colors, Blue Collar Everyman Concept.
It's also makes more sense to make the Fatal Fury universe canon to SF's universe instead of the KOF's zig zaggidy lore. KOF's lore and aging is all over the place, while Fatal Fury has steady line to follow which makes it easier and a lot more sense while feeling organic to SF's lore.
I realized something. Terry's original VA retired affer KOF13, i can't imagine how honored the new voice actor is because in a little under a decade, his Terry appeared in other big names franchises. That's crazy to me.
@@julianchalo I was gonna say Scorpion (Mortal Kombat), but he belongs on the North American side with other 2D fighting poster boys like Fulgore (Killer Instinct), Jonathan Blade (Eternal Champions), and Cerebella (Skullgirls).
Terry wish he was ryus rival. Ken is the better and more challenging to ryu. But ken has the attitude that the creators gave him to where he dosent care or isnt concerned in being the face. The creators of those franchise and characters are letting ryu stay there. Ryu or ken i like either for the face of fighting games.
Let's remember Terry basically started the Kof franchise and his popularity from Fatal Fury. invited Art of Fighting Ryo and changed the landscape of SNK because the industry never saw anything like it.
Terry I think represents familiarity (relatability, well-balanced gameplay [pretty much, if you know how to play Ryu or Ken, you can pick up Terry). With tragedy, he represents optimism. I really like Kyo, but he isn't necessarily the easiest to pick up though he is, if that makes sense (yeah, he's "shoto" like in his perspective games, especially 94, but add in extra steps and you you get satisfaction in extra flashy hits). And it feels like if it were between he and Iori, and lot of people would pick Iori. Plus, if you compare Terry to Kyo, Terry has the will to fight whereas it feels like Kyo was inherited that ability and is arrogant in result. Then you compare him with Shingo who idolizes him BUT he works for it even if he messes up or doesn't really get it right and I think that's highly admirable. And to add to Terry, the fact he raised the son of the father who had killed his really says a lot about Terry as a person. Edit: it feels like with Kyo, though I think he's an awesome character, SNK wants him to be cool (he's stylish) where as Terry is just cool.
''Hey, c'mon, c'mon!'' and ''Are you okay? BUSTER WOLF!!'' are the ones I remember the most from Terry, along with ''Oh KAY!'' when he takes his hat off.
Before Terry Bogard came to Smash, I didn't know who he was. But now, I can confidently say that he's one of my favorite video game characters. Even though I haven't played many SNK fighting games, having only recently played KOF XIV at an arcade (I need to fix that, maybe soon I'll get SVC Chaos to start), I still absolutely love this guy! I'm so happy he's in SF6 now, and can't wait to see where the Legendary Hungry Wolf goes to next!
ever since i was a kid and i saw this dude i thought "i wanna be as cool as him one day" man i am so happy that there are people that also really like terry!
The reason why Terry is such a likable character is because Terry, Ken and Ryu where created by the same guy: Takashi Nishiyama. Nishiyama worked for Capcom and created Street Fighter..Then he was hired at SNK and created Fatul Fury. I don't know why people don't mention that more often.
Terry is the first main character of Fatal Fury which is SNK’s first fighting game and was created by the same guy who created Ryu, Ken and Sagat, not to mention Adon, Gen and Birdie!
Kyo os iconic as well, but Iori is way more appealing, here in Brazil Iori surpass all characters of SNK, in popularity. To me, since the first glance, Terry catch the fav spot. 90s SNK gave us a bunch of great characters.
I feel like smash was definitely the main reason Terry is significantly more popular than kyo especially because of his memorable moves.Seeing Terry do a buster wolf must've been cool asf to people who have never seen him before
Kyo always felt like he was designed specifically to appeal to the gamer crowd. Terry's look follows the 'less is more' mantra that has benefitted other iconic characters.
Terry was the spotlight in the beginning. Kyo is the face of King of Fighters in Japan. But in 2023 to 2025 Terry finally became the face of Neo Geo SNK
@@thekid8224 don't know they started pushing him up. He appeared in smash, fighting ex layer, street fighter, king of combat and others. Even if kyo would be a guest character in sf6 i doubt he would be this hyped.

Without the SF characters EX layer fell off and did king of combat even get released outside of Japan doubt it. Now don't get me wrong Terry is a legendary character but so is Kyo and I doubt people would be this pressed about him if he wasn't. It comes off like Terry fans are threatened by Kyo which is weird
I'm happy for terry ,but i can't be happy that most people that like him now are for guests character purposes not his main games so all the adoration feels transparent , like a trending thing they'll quickly forget up until the next time it trends.
"His main game" didn't get a new entry in 25 years, and in KOF he's a secondary character. Of course people are gonna know him from guest appearances, that's practically all he's been in recently aside from lackluster games like KOF14/15 which have basically no penetration into the mass gaming audience. Frankly speaking, being in Smash is the best thing that could've ever happened for the character and maybe even for SNK. Because now you'll have a number of people who really grew to like Terry, then they'll try the games that he's in and at least some of them will end up liking those too.
Fun Fact: During the development of KOF '99, it was announced that Terry would be killed off the franchise alongside Geese, then both would be canonically replaced by Rock Howard. But the fans strongly resented that.
Kyo wouldn't be in this conversation if it wasn't for the capcom vs. series. Terry would undoubtedly shine no competition but because that series became theoretically the greatest fighting video game crossover of all time. I think even more so than marvel series
Terry is cool because he defines core human coolness without being a femboy anime hero with tryhard bishonen jpop trends, Terry defines being cool and manly without trying.
The real reason is marketing. Since SF6 is super popular people are obviously sucking up to Terry (And SNK is taking advantage of this to push Garou to the point where they confirmed the presence of Ken and Chum Li in it BEFORE DONG HWAN AND JAE HOON). If Garou wasn't in production and Kyo was in SF6 he would obviously be more popular and sucked up than Terry now.
Terry is the real street fighter, that was his training ground, i love that part in the ova where he gets beaten by some boxers and karate fighters but then he starts getting better and ends up destroying everyone. His arch enemy is a gangster not an evil ancient evil being which helps a lot for the realism and keeping things grounded, he had a gf and he has hobbies and loves fast food and he even has a monkey as a pet and a motorcycle i mean the man is just cool, even the cap helps him in that regard, he throws it every where and even the animations respect the cap, just watch as how he puts it backwards in his power dunk or how he holds it in his rising tackle and then of course he even adopts a kid which shows you how good and awesome he is, he trains rock and still fights like a champ 🙏🏻
Kyo feels like a generic highshool emo inherited his power from his bloodline. Terry is just a power f*cking spike who defeats Krauser and Geese alone with his own fighting style. A straight up brawler!
I'd like to also add that Terry has a ton of movesets that are relatively easy to pull off, thus made him a reliable carry for all group of players. Kyo's combos can be a challenge at times. And one more thing, Kyo had to share the spotlight with Iori and make the whole "brand" of him more... serious? I don't know how to say it. But to the mass, Terry is much easier to love.
I love my KOF characters. They are all cool to me. I'm glad Terry and SNK are doing well. Ken in SF and Terry in KOF were my favs as a kid because of color red.
I never could get into KoF (Not really into 2v2 or 3v3 fighters) but I love its character roster. While I understand people may like Kyo, but his rather cocky, almost downright arrogant and (somewhat) insufferable personality is also disliked by many. When I was a kid, I liked Kyo. I mean, who doesn't love a hot-head with flame powers? But, then as I grew older, his cockiness and his so-called: "Chosen one" status throughout most of the series runs kinda rubbed me off the wrong way. Like, if Ash took Kyo's flames instead of Iori's, he would have a different mindset (Granted, he could still kickass). But, we never got that. Now, Terry Bogard...This dude, this man is an absolute bro. He's got a good heart, strong-sense of justice and adopted Rock Howard after the fall of Geese and taught him everything he knows about fighting. Not only that, he is traveling the world enjoying life, making friends and loving what he do best: FIGHTING! I mean, yeah on the surface that may be too simple and generic. But, Terry is an effective and memorable character because of those simplicities. Kyo fought a world ending threat to get the job done( and mostly for his girlfriend), Terry fights with all he has (with heart) even if the odds are insurmountable. To quote the end of Terry's SF6 Character trailer: "Now, Where to Tomorrow?"
Outfuckingstanding video my guy!! Oh and don’t forget! Terry is also the lovable older brother to his more serious sibling Andy, so he’s got that universal big bro always looking out for you vibe as well! (I’m the oldest of my siblings so that always resonated with me) 😁
My introduction to fighting games was ff 1 on the sega mega drive and i've kept up with snk's fighting games since then I'm glad to see snk is doing well and thriving
My first exposure to Terry was in Death Battle in the episode “Ken vs. Terry”, and while it was a slow burn, I began appreciating him as a character and a fighter. So when the SNK leak for Smash Ultimate’s DLC happened, I was ecstatic to see that Terry was the chosen rep since he was the SNK character I knew the most, and ever since, I managed to become a fan of The King of Fighters, with KOFXV being my first game of the series. While a lot of characters joined my SNK favourites after that(special shoutouts to Hinako, Yuri, & Dinosaur King), Terry still remained #1 on my list.
If I remember correctly, part of the team who worked on SF1 be the ones to work on Fatal Fury. Says a lot about the likeness between the two franchise.
When I was a kid, I used to accompany my cousin who is a big fan of _KOF_ series and, in a beginning, he always chose *Terry* as part of his Edit Team in any case. In his case, it was with _KOF '99_ that I met those characters; heck, I even met *K'* way before than *Kyo* and for a time I used to believe *K'* was the main character in the main line of _KOF_ but still, *Terry* was always there like a real-sized fighting version of *Mario* and now it feels so correct seeing those two in _Smash_
His smash appearance was my introduction to his character and I’m so grateful for it because if he never got in I would’ve never found maximillan dood and kof xiii which got me mad into fighting games and now going tournaments which help me with my social anxiety. I love this character
Everyman character vs Japanese Schoolboy, even if we remove Terry and Kyo from the equation, which concept appeals more to a variety of people Worldwide?
Kyo is basically what Liu Kang is to the MK franchise or Akira to Virtual Fighters, they are made to be a poster boy with a limited personality that unable to make it out a full blown marketable face. It is the reason why they opt for Scorpion and Raiden to be the main guys in the plot, they did the same with Kage and Jacky in VF as well. Kyo just look cool but that's pretty much it, his value was supposed to be dropped after the Orochi saga but bring it back in NEST saga after the backlash from KOF fans. Terry is loved by everyone and most certainly bought major of modern audience to the SNK franchise
My main reason why I like Terry over Kyo is that, whenyou get down to it, Kyo is a bit of a prick. Both characters are like the popular kid whos the star of the basketball team but Terry is the guy who trained hard to get good at the game while also being a super cool dude who everyone likes. Kyos the guy who never really practices, always wins, and gloats about how much better he is than everyone else. To put it simply, Terry is Ryu if Ryu had a sense of Humor and wasnt just a chaste monk. Kyo is Ken if Gouken didnt teach him that he wasn't hot shit. Its also why I think people like Iori more than Kyo sometimes because he wants to kill Kyo and, honestly, if you knew Kyo in real life you'd be hard pressed not to feel the same way.
Na you got that totally wrong Kyo is just really cool and manly he knows what his cable of and not of as seen in most of his games! Your just hating for no reason
@@fateslegacy Kyo treated Shingo like crap, so much so that Kyos own dad took Shingo under his wing just to teach the kid how to fight. Yet even after being served such a big helping of humble pie he still acts like he doesn't fart. Sure, Shingos got mega-milhouse vibes to him but he didn't deserve to be talked to like he's trash. Compare that to Terry's big fans and how he treats them? He adopted the kid of his biggest enemy. I like Kyo, his personality sticks out among the other fighting game protags but if I had to choose between hanging out with him or Terry or Ryo, Kyos the last one I'm choosing.

It's actually the lovely beauties of the series that do matter not Bogard or even Andy but if we're going to play that game then if I'm fighting seriously then obviously like always art of fighting easily dominates
I like Kyo, more than Terry even; but Terry is just way more fun. Kyo just comes off cool trying to be cool. Terry is cool because he feels like he’s being himself.

@@bluemoonw.3300 nobody said he was only famous in the states, he is a popular character, but saying he was the face of snk is stretching his popularity. Anyone can vote in those polls, even people who doesn't play at all. That's why the svc chaos cover was changed and everyone (in the community) noticed it.
This is brilliant! Fatal Fury is my favourite fighting game series of all time. Terry is just a cool dude.
He's a strait white man with a red cap and later when he's older he's that cool uncle in a brown jacket that lifts up your spirit while playing basketball, he'll tell you about his past how he was an orphan with his brother Andy, how his father was assassinated by Geese, he took revenge, but he wanted Geese to have justice and pay for his crimes, but its a different story at the end, he lost two of his love interest in life, he moved on and found a new liking for Blue Mary who also had his boyfriend died. He adopted the illegitimate son of Geese Howard Rock Howard, trained him in martial arts and brought him up making him a great dad as well. Overall Terry's just a great guy and an awesome dude at the end. So when he ask "ARE YOU OK?" He's asking if you're fine he'll help you out, truly inspirational.
Your enthusiasm and nostalgia for Terry is infectious! Great video as well. Short, sweet, and to the point. I hope your channel continues to grow.

Not really. Ryo is just Snk Ryu. At least Terry & Kyo are original
@@Saintluci92I personally prefer Ryo to Ryu and Ken.
@@Saintluci92 Nothing about them are similar outside of uppercuts. Art of Fighting created the super move. Ryo had an actual backstory right off the bat, and a goal in the game. @@Sy-xu2yw I mean, the early 90s was really just an extension of the 80s. So it still checks.

No lo dije en mal plan, solo me parece que estan exagerando todo esto de "Terry cara de la compañía "
Well, technically Mai is SNK's icon. Lol

@@bunnybreaker he is a nice young man 😌
Why is Kyo always left out of crossovers, he exists too, damn it!
he will be a key character in Capcom vs Snk 3 ... i hope
@@julianchaloThey would never leave Kyo out that's madness!

YES SIR
Have said terry IS the true king of fighters. Even his enemies have some respect for him. Love that guy. My main in Smash Hell even bought sf6 cause he's joining
he is just such a fun and cool character
THIS!!! THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!

Ryu is the face of not just Capcom, but all fighting games. But Terry is rivaling him in that spot.

I was gonna say Scorpion (Mortal Kombat),
but he belongs on the North American side with other 2D fighting poster boys like Fulgore (Killer Instinct), Jonathan Blade (Eternal Champions), and Cerebella (Skullgirls).
TELL THEM!
Move over Kyo the original OG is back in town!
He’s blonde and speaks broken English, kyo is my guy
Before Terry Bogard came to Smash, I didn't know who he was. But now, I can confidently say that he's one of my favorite video game characters. Terry was the spotlight in the beginning. Kyo is the face of King of Fighters in Japan. But in 2023 to 2025 Terry finally became the face of Neo Geo SNK
What happened in 2023 for Terry to become the face of SNK
@thekid8224 He's been the face of SNK since 1991. Kyo was only the mascot for KOF and KOF became the flagship series during the Playmore Era.
@@thekid8224 don't know they started pushing him up. He appeared in smash, fighting ex layer, street fighter, king of combat and others. Even if kyo would be a guest character in sf6 i doubt he would be this hyped.

Kyo wouldn't be in this conversation if it wasn't for the capcom vs. series. Terry would undoubtedly shine no competition but because that series became theoretically the greatest fighting video game crossover of all time. I think even more so than marvel series

Meanwhile i was always a Dark Chris guy.
Double Purple Flames was my thing
Terry is and will be synonymous with SNK
he is THAT DUDE
Kyo feels like a generic highshool emo inherited his power from his bloodline.
Terry is just a power f*cking spike who defeats Krauser and Geese alone with his own fighting style. A straight up brawler!
in Kyo's case he will always be overshadowed by Iori in terms of popularity(count the times Iori makes a guest appearance in anything, vs Kyo)
People care about Terry because he cares about us. He’s always asking if we’re ok.
Not to mention he's a good dad, too! Lil Rock can attest to that. Good video, I just subscribed!
thank you so much for the sub! 😎🔥💕
