@@renatop1238 Pretty fair take. Additionally i think it's worth noting that the 2d fg market was in a very unfavorable situation, so it's actually impressive that Capcom bothered allowing a game with a lot of brand new high quality sprite work. For reference, the late 90s 2d fg scene was already working on mostly recycling sprites in sequels: SF3 3S, MvC1, KOF 98-00, etc, were mostly relying on recycled sprites of the previous versions. Also, you focused on the SNK sprites in your comment but the truth is that a number of SF sprites were also updated to the new art style like shotos, Bison, etc. It was just unfortunate that not everyone was updated.

In the 90s it was a company with an incredible artistic sense and level of talent (imo better than Capcom in that aspect) and with an incomparable creative energy, but those elite artists were always badly managed by the businessmen.
And it's interesting to note that even the ambitious KOF 13, no matter how wonderful the game is, also shows the SNK's mistake of betting too hard on very expensive 2d assets right in the ps3 gen. Which put the company in real trouble afterwards.
SNK always neglected serious investment in 3d tech since the 90s and we can notice in the way their 3d projects always looking poor compared to contemporaries made by competitors with higher 3d skills: FF Wild Ambition vs T3, KOF Maximum Impact vs T5 and SC3... finally leading to the current sitaution where SNK's games look a generation behind the competitors.
That bad decision is still affecting the company today, and today there's no other way but 3d. So even if SNK still has some elite og devs, those 2d skills dont count anymore. There's a lot going against the company.

Here's a fun factoid worth bringing up regarding this game's development: Falcoon (one of the SNK artists) stated at Twitter back in 2017 that *Dante (from the Devil May Cry series)* was among the planned playable characters during SvC Chaos' early stages of production but he eventually got ditched out. Side note, the pixel artist who was initially assigned to work on Dante eventually did Demitri.

  • @Hieropink

Couple things worth noting from the SNK nerd side :
While the grim stages are all this game's own, the "more realistic artstyle" is more or less because that's mostly what the KOF sprite artstyle was throughout the NEOGEO era, pretty much anyone who was in any of the NESTS era games in these besides Kyo swapping back to the classic uniform are all using their sprites from those games.
Balrog's not the only trace job here. All the shotos looking... strange is because they seem to be using the original sf2 shoto sprites as a base, complete with their weirdly bent legs. Also Hugo for his SF3 sprites, which is why he's noticeably larger than the other SF characters than he was in those games thanks to the scaling carrying over.
Funny enough, as far as I can recall hearing, it was actually Capcom as the iniator on this game, as apparently the deal had included both sides making at least X number of games, they got mad SNK apparently hadn't matched them on that end as per the deal, and then immediately marched over as soon as they reformed post bankruptcy, and demanded the final game from their side. Given the already stressful circumstances they were already under, this apparently did a good deal to re-sour the relationship between the 2 companies for at least the next decade or so.

    • @kwizzeh
      @kwizzeh 25 днів тому +25

Chun Li was also traced from her 3s sprite lol and here's something for your last statement, I remember reading on an old EN Neo-Geo forum from one of the California loke tests that one of the members attended that when they asked a rep, the game was basically being released as a way to fulfil contractual obligations. That's some additional anecdotal evidence to what you heard.

    • @CoolGuyZool129
      @CoolGuyZool129 25 днів тому +17

With that knowledge, it sounds their initial plans were ambitious before being shelved to get the game out faster. Angel Torres joked that SNK "stole" Rage of the Dragon's Tag Battle mechanics for KOF 2003, so that idea (in the vein of MvC's real-time switching) was still new and exciting enough for Playmore that the staff used it elsewhere as an experiment.
2021KDuck, the same guy who found Garou 2's sprites, discovered sprite sheets and concept art by Falcoon from the earliest version of SvC, speculated to be a "doujin game" with findings of a "Gekka" system, as per the listed roster.
      *K' & Alex*
      *Quan and Akira*
      *Athena & Poison*
      *Ralf & Zangief*
      *Urien & Kim*
      *Hinako & Honda*
      *Iori & Morrigan*
      *Rugal*
It's unclear when this might've been. Garou 2's sprites were dated April 2001 and Playmore was founded August 2001, so either that project was fresh on the minds of those within the company or someone in particular liked Quan and wanted to repurpose her. Rage of the Dragons released in June 2002, so it's possible this could have been anywhere from Late 2001 to Mid 2002 that the team brainstormed and played around with a test build before ditching the concept altogether and shifting focus to a standard 1v1 fighter as the pressure of the contract breathed down their necks. Alas, the piracy that impeded RotD's sales (all profits were used to pay back its debt) appears to have be the same problem that plagued SvC: Chaos.

@@CoolGuyZool129 It was on record that MOTW2 and SVCC were being worked on before SNK 1.0's bankruptcy as told by SNK Playmore then-president Koichi Toyama in 2003. The April 2001 build date for MOTW2 is very likely what they had on hand at the time of closing when SNK 1.0 formally closed their doors on April 2, 2000.
Evoga (2000-2004) concept for RotD was very likely done earlier in 2001 after the bulk of the work was done for BrezzaSoft's 2001 release Evolution Soccer was finished. Then Noise Factory (1998-2017) took all concepts Evoga created and turned it into a game since they are credited for the programming, music and art & sprite work.
This might be relevant too since Capcom at the time typically did 2-on-2 VS fighting games: Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and the later canceled 2003 Capcom Fighting All-Stars all had real-time switching. I wouldn't be surprised if SNK at the time knew on some level that CFAS was going to be a 2-on-2 tag fighter due to friendships and employees jumping between both companies all the time since CFAS was reportedly in development for 2 years until it was cancelled in 2003.

The SvC Chaos iterations of Geese, Goenitz & Orochi Iori were backported into the PS2 port of KOF '02, and for some reason that was enough for the former two to be added in the UM ver. as bonus characters as well.
Most of the non-KOF characters from the SNK side here (Genjuro, Shiki, goddess Athena & Mars People) were also given another chance to shine in NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, which is a game that's worth covering another time.

      @carlosaugusto9821 25 днів тому +24

Dan's SVC version deserves more appreciation even in gameplay aspect because SNK wanted to explore his comedy attributes and went a long way further than Capcom's versions of Dan at the moment, when he was still too much based on the SFA versions. Actually Capcom's best version of Dan (in the classic era) in the sense of expanding his comedy attributes is MvSF, because of the addition of the autograph move and his own "Raging Demon". Then SNK made many brand new jokes for him making him infinitely superior to the CvS version.
That was only surpassed by the SF4 version, that pushed his comedy attributes to a much higher level, that makes almost everything from the past obsolete.
Note: Dan from Pocket Fighter technically would be the best, but it doesnt count here because the whole game is meant to be comedic. It's an unfair to compare to normal games.

A lot of features like light flickering off the characters where used in both versions. Showing they wanted to keep up with Capcoms features. The cast is an obvious change from Capcoms. Like Demitri over Morrigan, Geontiz over Rugal Evil Ken over Evil Ryu and Genji of Haroumaru. A special chip was even required for one background. So much of the development was clearly after. Remember they put out a KoF for 10 years straight. They made those games quickly back then.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 19 днів тому +1

@@thomasbeall9069 SNK died in 00 and stopped making games, and officially closed in 01, so that part about making KOF for 10 years straight is off. The last games of the original SNK were in 00 and the rights of franchises like KOF and MSlug ended up with a corean company that made KOF 01, 02 and MSlug 4.
Then SNK returned in 02-03 and released this SVCC and KOF 03. And we must not forget that the new SNK lost talents after the closing of the original. Like Oda, the main dev behind Garou MOTW, that went to Dimps and stayed there, and eventually became the gameplay designer of SF4, and only after that work he returned to SNK to made these recent games since KOF 14. And the iconic artist Shinkiro, that was doing artwork since FF1 and defined the company's art style, went to Capcom (he was already out of SNK in the time of CvS2).
So SNK literally was just restarting and not in a good shape. Maybe that was the reason why SNK stayed with the Neogeo for a little longer, since the ideal way was switching to a modern hardware. Even Capcom switched for MvC2 and CvS1-2.

CVS2 gets a ton of praise for its aesthetics despite the fact that the majority of the Capcom cast are reusing alpha sprites that do not blend very well with the updated "CVS Style" spritework. Game looks great when you got Maki or Kyosuke fighting the rival company, but it looks low budget when Morrigan or Sagat was on the screen. Those sprites date back to early CPS2 titles.
At least the SNK style sprites look consistent. You could throw the Capcom cast into an old-school KOF game with a little touch up work.

I have to commend SNK for making a better parody of themselves than Capcom could with Dan. They gave him two new moves, one is the Haoh Shoukou Ken motion, where Dan prepares a huge fireball that lets out a big wave that moves as far as his already pathetic gadokens. The second is a huge charged punch that's unblockable, when it hits, Dan dislocates his arm. He turns away from the camera, fixes his arm and turns back to the camera, giving a thumbs up. Still makes me smile every time I see it.

I do have a soft spot for SVC. I was glad to hear you pointing out that a lot of the choices made were done to distinguish it from CVS1/2, from the cast choices to the mood and probably even the unified no-groove-selection system. The game does feel half baked but in a way so did CVS1, and I think a sequel to SVC could have made it as beloved as CVS2.
And in a way SVC2 does exist in the form of Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, which builds on a lot of the stuff SVC did (similar movement, whiffable throws, and the same guard-cancel dash mechanic, even most of the SNK cast that can't normally appear in a KOF showed up for it with reused sprites etc.) and NGBC is great.

SNK tried to give some attention to Tessa in 03, a time Capcom already gave up promoting her. I always thought she could have been a nice MvC char if Capcom wanted.
Right after Red Earth (96), Capcom tried promoting Tessa to join the group of "Capcom girls" as we see in Pocket Fighter (97), but that interest disappeared fairly quickly later. So Red Earth ended up a failure and even failed to "export" chars to incorporate the company's legacy... In the sense that Darkstalkers failed but some chars became preserved thanks to constant appearances in crossovers. And very tragically, the last opportunity to promote Red Earth was Capcom Fighting Jam, probably the company's most shameful fg project.

Covering the NGP fighting games collectively is a good idea of video in the future. Those are very interesting projects because of how different they are, especially looking at them from the perspective of the current market. Remaking classic fgs like FF, SS and KOF in cute chibi art style, instead of aiming for an accurate port, would be unthinkable for the game development mentality after the early 00s. And that has little to do with the quality of the conversion either, because there are and 16 bit ports (and even 8 bit ports) of arcade fgs, that obviously are not arcade-perfect, but the companies aimed for an accurate style... whatever fit the console. But SNK just wanted to explore a different art direction and deliver a new experience, which was also on brand with the portable gaming culture at the time.

The only time a WH game got a game with chibi art style was for the Gameboy, Nettou World Heroes 2 JET
I miss that era when companies make remakes of games with chibi art style.

@@meganinten0078 Yes, the WH series was in an unlucky bad timing. When the system was created the series already died, and if I'm not mistaken it still wasn't sold to SNK but ADK was on the way of closing.
But all that just reminds me of another topic... The grave mistake of ADK acting like snobs and refusing to collab with SNK and let WH appear in KOF 94. So the outcome is that KOF became big and moved forward while WH died in 95. Just like KOF became a shelter for Athena, Ralf and Clark, developed their personalities and saved them from being forgotten, the same would happen to WH chars. Just like MvC1 sheltered and saved Strider and SF sheltered and saved Final Fight. Then if those WH chars became preserved thanks to KOF, maybe there was a real chance that WH would get a new game for the NGP.

I think the problem with SvC: Chaos is the overall aesthetics. The game is very taciturn and empty, and the music is too atmospheric, although the overall cast is phenomenal (I mean, they added Dimitri with the Midnight Bliss transformation to ALL the characters and freaking Megaman Zero) and SNK has the merit of actually making the sprites with a consistent art direction compared to Capcom's games (cough, cough, Morrigan, cough, cough).
Capcom, on the other hand, hit the nail on the head with the “celebration” nature of CvS1 and 2, giving a “broadcast Olympics” vibes to their crossover games, with GYM eurodance music (nothing beats the catchy “Tuna with Bacon”) and the TV broadcast theme, giving the impression that this reunion of these two companies was so historical that it deserved to be on TV.

For one, it has all original sprites (CVS1/2 lacks that....Morrigan sprites....oh my). I think the legacy of this game is simply getting a glimpse of the SNK makeover of the classic Capcom fighters, and that, in and of itself, is valuable and cool to see. I always thought the aesthetic vision of this game was far superior to its counterpart, but, gameplay, at the end of the day, is king. Its very interesting piece of history.

Hello guile, sorry for my bad english because i dont know if you take requests but by seeing you love obscure fgs i recomend you to check the Dual Blades and its sequels Slashers and Dual Souls
Dual Blades is a *Turkish* indie fg released on the *gameboy advance* , and one of the 5 gba games with M rating. By the gameplay you could say that is a mix between SamSho, SF3 and Guilty Gear, with things such as a roman cancel, parry, burst, super select and fatalities. The game also have an Arcade, training, survival, score attack, time attack and a *combo challenge / tutorial for a gba* and *A COMMAND LIST THAT EXPLAINS ALL SPECIALS AND UNIVERSAL MECHANICHS* , something that other gba fgs such as ggx, sfa3 and tekken didnt had for the console (and even other consoles).
About the gameplay most characters have simple inputs shuch as in Akatsuki, with them being quarter circles, down down, foward down and back foward (but they're not charge moves). The buttons are slash (kinda like a medium slash from sam sho, that you can do a 3 frame jab if you input foward too), big slash ( heavy slash, also grab foes if you press foward while close), kick ( a medium attack that if you input foward will be a 3 frame kick too) and the power button. The power button is special because if you tap two times you do a taunt that gains meter, and if you press power + slash you do an overhead. Also all supers are done with this button.
The gimmicks of this game are pretty intersting too, let me explain. There is a parry in this game that works exactly like sf3, input foward before getting hit (that is called block, because the game calls standart blocking guarding for some reason). Recovery, the roman cancel is done by pressing both slash + big slash while perfoming a move ( and costs some meter ). The burst is called breaker and is done by pressing back + slash + big slash while taking damage (costs a full meter bar). You can dash and back dash by pressing one of the side buttons two times.
Now the plot and characters are very unique in my opinion. The setting is a more *realistic take of the middle age* , but unhapply i didnt finished the arcade mode yet. The cast is composed of:
Kanae and Brendan are the shotos with all the toolkit of one and command grabs. She is a samurai wanting revenge and he is an adventurer who loves danger (His motto is nothing venture nothing gain) and simps for all women in the game.
Andre is a templar knight who is also a parry/ big body and maybe a grappler ( he is slow and have a follow up to his throw ). His taunt also throw a rose like dudley, and is a insanely good projectile. He fights to save his kingdom from the lizard people.
Efe is an ottoman warrior and a zoner with his high low mixup of projectiles. He fights for Türkiye as far as I know.
Rungard is also a zoner who cant dash but have a special teleport. He have fire, eletric and ice projectiles that give you unfair hit stun (he is a psycho who wants to destroy the world, thats it). He is based in a viking/ celtic sorcerer probaly.
Shin is a rushdown zoner with the most damaging and safest projectile in the game, its insane diagonal range is impossible to jump or crouch over it. To his design he is green testament who uses crows who loves the blood of a slit throat and people screaming ☠️ (Not even The Boys have that shi )
Nagashapa is an elderly Mongolian sorceress and farmer, who give you all kind of curses like no jump, no specials and backwards controller. She uses ghosts for those attacks.
And we have Jaman, one of the lizard man that attacks Andre's kingdom. He looks like a mix between an armadillo, akuma and blanca and plays exactly like those with the exception of summoning lizards for his attacks (also a 1 frame active overhead aimed at the foe).
Well, that its Dual Blades for today. I could say something about the sequels but thats another history. Also sorry for the big text.

One downside about this game that wasn't talked about was that the controls were too unforgiving.
For example, the Flash Kick motion couldn't be done from a crouch block to up. You either had to move from Down-Back to Up-Forward, or roll from Down-Back to Down then to Up.
DP motions also had to precisely end on Down-Forward

@@packnerz2017 I was trying to give a broader example to get you to open your mind and understand, but that didn't work. Now I'll just go into a long diatribe about how Flash Kick motions have worked since Street Fighter II, and how they don't work in SVC Chaos.
First, notations: D = Down, U = Up, B = Back, F = Forward (numpad notation will not work with this explanation)
Next, there are three ways of pressing Down, which are DB, D and DF. Also three ways of pressing Up, which are UB, U and UF.
How the Flash Kick motions works is that as long as you are pressing some version of Down and then follow that with some version of Up, you will get perform the move. In essence, you have 9 ways to perform the move:
      - charge DB to either UB, U, or UF
      - charge D to either UB, U, or UF
      - charge DF to either UB, U, or UF
Mind you, DB to UB and DF to UF aren't really feasible due to how close they were to hitting B and F respectively and causing the motion input to be disrupted
With all that in mind, the fastest way to perform the move from a blocking position using a Fight Stick or a Gamepad was charge DB to U
This was due to least amount of movement required compared to the other combinations and without input disruption. This, of course, is not a factor with keyboards and leverless, but these were not options in the arcades and before the PS360 era.
Now we get to SVC Chaos and how it royally messed up the Flash Kick motion. What they did wrong was restricting to the motion to these three combinations:
      - charge DB to UF
      - charge D to U
      - charge DF to UB
So we lose 6 different ways to perform the move, especially the optimal block position DB to U. So anybody used to performing it the optimal way would have to change their motion to either DB to UF or DB to D to U, messing up their muscle memory, and adding precious frames and reaction time.
This is how badly the controls were implemented in SVC Chaos
