I will always prefer core KOF gameplay over core SF gameplay (I play both), I'm not asking anyone to do the same and I can't win logical arguments about sales and metrics, but no one will ever change my mind.
The one thing I like about KOF is how impactful their character designs are, despite being relatively simplistic when broken down artistically. Which is difficult to achieve when creating a character design. It truly demonstrates that less is more, when certain fighting game characters overcompensate with excessive detail. It just scratches my brain, lol.
Yooo dope fucking video! Like you said, theres really no 1 defining king of fighters game. Each person/generation has their go to KOF game. Be it 98, 02, 11, 13 ect, What I love about KOF character designs is the believability of their designs. Sure theyll be kinda out there since its a video game, but its not TOO crazy, these characters have personality outside of just fighting. They feel like whole characters. I love how SNK changes Athena's design from game to game. My favorite KOF game is probably 02um, 14 was how i got into the series and when 02um had its rollback beta i played it also to learn. Now 15 is nice too because it has Dolores and shes become one of my faves to play. Oh and nice touch with the KOF 14 theme at the end
KOF is the best fighting game series. The style, snappy gameplay, catchy voicelines always keep me coming back even though I suck. KOFXV had so much potential
Another thing worth noting is that the storytelling of these games is phenomenal or at least in my opinion. It's not Shakespearean but there are some incredible moments of characterization and well rounded worldbuilding along with the designs that go along with the character designs.
In latin america, KOF is HUGE, absolutely huge for who played on Arcades... Favorite 1... Well... - OST: KOF 97 - Gameplay: XV - Graphic: XIII - Roster: XV - Played most: 2002 SNK was masterful in do the things with a care for details... i've also played many other of his games like The Last Blade (1 and 2), all old Samurai Shodows, Fatal Fury and almost all Metal Slugs, Soccer game too (Fuck you Benimaru, just die). I think what makes SNK lose the public it's because... It lacked in something... It wasn't the lack of care, but it's like people didn't want to give a chance, i see the fanbase as part of fault, KOF 2002 is fighting the game that i've played most and... It's boring in comparison with Maximum Impact, XIII and XV mainly. Hell, even KOF Maximum Impact 2/REA are fantastic fighting games and the original roster is so fucking good. Mignon Beart it's like my top 3 characters in all whole franchise, and can't forget how Duke was so unique, oppressive... With so MUCH content for a fighting game. I beg for the Prince Saudi and people in SNK, if possible, bring MI characters back like Alba, Soriee, Mignon, Duke, Luise, Liem and Nagase... KOF XV is the best game for me nowadays, it's complex and yet simple, a gigantic rooster, beside i miss some weird characters like Lim, i still a bit orphan of '98 Mary and can't believe in another Kof without Chang and Choi... There's no Daimon also... And no return of Team America (Brian Battler is a Devil in KOF 98...) KOF is indeed essential... A person that never faced the SNK boss syndrom can't talk much about games.
The best thing about KOF is that unlike a lot of fighters. Your legacy knowledge will really help you. Stuff that is true in KOF98 will still be true in KOF XV. Where a game like SF Alpha 2 will not help you play SF 6.
As someone who played most fighting games, and even when I'm more active somewhat competitively in sf and tekken (because they have bigger community in my area), i still like kof the most for its fast pace game, and the variety of playstyles from players to players, and even from games to games. great video! thanks for this 2002, 13 and 15 are my favorites
Nice hair, dude! KoF is such an awesome series of games. I'm from Brazil and we love KoF for it's characters, fun and nostalgia. KoF XV is one of my favorite games online too. Thanks for the video. Subscribed!
My favorite KOF is XI, which has the most refreshing roster, clean aesthetic, and robust tag mechanics.

Haciendo memoria y siendo honesto, king of fighters fue mi saga de videojuegos de pelea favorito por su estética. Digo, no solo eso, el gameplay también era buenísimo, sobre todo porque cumplía con lo que la estética prometía, estaba a la altura.
I love the King of Fighters. There’s so many that I like. If I were to choose one I would say it’s King of Fighter’s 11. That game is so freaking cool. Love it.
Loved this video man. Love seeing someone give KOF its credit for being an amazing series. Been a huge fan literally since KOF ‘94. To me KOF had the best cast of characters in the genre, they just ooze personality and charm. The character designs are so stylish and cool.
AFAIK I think KOF (and just SNK) is mostly just slept on in the US and Canada just because of Street Fighter and MK being more prevalent at the time (and the mid-90s also saw the rise of Tekken since 3D was the hip and cool thing). A stark contrast to Latin America or Chinese-speaking parts of Asia (for similar reasons as LatAm iirc) where it's pretty much THE fighting game series.
Great video! As mainly a fighting game player, I grew up with SNK games and they're all very close to heart for me. I'm always glad to encounter someone else that has appreciation for SNK's leacy! KOF is no doubt in the hall of the greatest. Cheers friend!
If I'm not mistaken, a lot of Smash Bros' mechanics draws inspiration from KOF thanks to Sakurai himself being an avid fan (and probably the main reason why Terry landed in Smash Bros). Hoping CotW does SNK justice in the US and Canada, at least, since they're probably the only places where their games never really gained traction.
@@InfinitySevens Street Fighter Alpha was Hideaki Itsuno's first game, who would go on to create Rival Schools and Devil May Cry 3. It's confirmed that he played KOF before working on Alpha. Not only that but Street Fighter 4 was made by Dimps, which was made of former KOF staff.
Some of the things I love about the series is the whole game itself has a lot of personality. Like who to expect to be in each team, their reasons (for an example, Yuri might decide to join the AOF team rather than the Women's Fighter Team one year, or you can always know that Terry will be Fatal Fury and he'll be there every year), their interactions with other characters, their sideline poses in the older games, KOF 97's mechanic where whether a character got along with the one following them after being KOed, they either received extra stock, unchanged, or they didn't give you any at all. The themes changed or there's variations of them (take for instance, Esaka). One could also go "I like this year because this character competed" or "I liked this saga". It's interesting you can do so much with 4 buttons as opposed to the 6. It feels more looser in movement I think than others (I mean, KOF doesn't have air dash, but it's not the game for that).
kof or snk game is popular in indonesia at its time, everybody waiting in lines just to play it. MK on the otherhand not many people play it in arcade, only those who have sega and snes play MK. kof is money maker for arcades owner.
Great video! KOF98 is my all time favourite. The game is so balanced that you can win with anyone you play with. You should see Xiao Hai play using random characters.
5:11 Also in Art Of Fighting 1 (game King originated) the first time player face her she look like your typical prim and proper male until you defeat her revealing her true gender.
0:40 Regarding the success of KOF in the West, that is just true related to U.S. and Europe, because in Latin America, KOF is definetely more popular than SF and Tekken. Not that those games are not also popular in the region, but the anime style of KOF and its huge presence in arcades during the 2000's and early 2010's conquered a lot of fans in that region, more than those other franchises.
great video bro nice narration and editing wating for more in depth detailed videos like this one maybe a tekken one or exploring the musical themes animation mechaniques ..ect of fighting games
I've always thought that every version of KOF is awesome in its own way, I've played all of them; It's too bad to see that the community is so polarized. P.D. yes my personal favorite is indeed 2002 because of its secret mechanics, angel and the cheap AF fight against Rugal
hahaha man its always kof 2002 its the best fighting game ever the GOAT Why? Because of the mechanism fights and combos , and balance variety of styles, almost the players for every person have 3 different characters from any other player and do well with them add everything good from other visons of kof like music ,background and characters design
Ahh the game that was called as a dream match game yet the plot focus on that one particular shoehorn clown, and turn legacy character like AOF pointless background clowns, modern one even worse always nerfing best characters like Terry and always buff Kyo, Iori and Mai. What a dirty scam. Glad it got the karma for it disservice and got buried for a while for what it done to my boy Ryo.
This is a franchise that needs more love.
Even Maximillian Dood, Capcom's greatests fanboy, thinks that the characters from SNK look better and cooler than the Street Fighter characters
KoF might be not great in da USA, but in latín América? ITS the real King of fighting games
This series is also popular in the arcade scenes of my country Philippines too starting 2000s
In china its also played a lot
I will always prefer core KOF gameplay over core SF gameplay (I play both), I'm not asking anyone to do the same and I can't win logical arguments about sales and metrics, but no one will ever change my mind.
I'm with you. I'm exposed to both franchise since I'm an elementary school kid. But I chose the SNK route.
Same, I definitely prefer the gatlings of kof
Me too, I like SF's inbuts but I like the viscerality of KOF combos.
The one thing I like about KOF is how impactful their character designs are, despite being relatively simplistic when broken down artistically. Latin America loves Snk games, especially KOF

I don’t have a favorite KOF game, but i really enjoyed my time with 15 and 2002, this video has me thinking about checking 15 out again
I think KOF's innovation with meter systems has been great
KOF is the best fighting game series. The style, snappy gameplay, catchy voicelines always keep me coming back even though I suck. KOFXV had so much potential
Lol nope, it's SF>Tekken>MK>>>>>>>>>>>>>kof
I beg to differ, kof is both style and substance, specially kof 13 to 15
KOF 11 is definitely my favorite, but I love the series as a whole. I will also agree that the characters are very stylish and charismatic.
Another thing worth noting is that the storytelling of these games is phenomenal or at least in my opinion. It's not Shakespearean but there are some incredible moments of characterization and well rounded worldbuilding along with the designs that go along with the character designs.

"Lacking robust stories"
I'm sorry what? You mean the franchise that practically invented long storylines and complex lore in fighting games?
Nice video, man! I hope KOF to become as popular as it was in the 90's!
The best thing about KOF is that unlike a lot of fighters. Your legacy knowledge will really help you. Stuff that is true in KOF98 will still be true in KOF XV. Where a game like SF Alpha 2 will not help you play SF 6.

Can you imagine how King would be like in City Of The Wolves(she'd be in her early 50s there)?
You can See her at the back having a drink in Rock Howard 's stage.

They have some of the most badass characters and themes in fighting game history.
King of fighters is 80% of my gaming staple. It has been since 94, it's a shame no one cares about it that much here in the states.
SNK's fighter soundtracks have the most bangers of any fighting game series. It's not even close.
Smash Brothers Melee added rolling and spot dodging in 2001 3 years after advanced and extra mode in KoF 98. That cant be a coincidence. Great video
If I'm not mistaken, a lot of Smash Bros' mechanics draws inspiration from KOF thanks to Sakurai himself being an avid fan (and probably the main reason why Terry landed in Smash Bros).

Not just that they did snk universe before there universe was even a thing
I wish KOF was bigger in my country.
KOF is the best fighting saga! The characters, the stages, the gameplay... everything is great about this game !
Lol definitely not..kof not even in the big 3 of fighting games..it's Sf, Tekken and MK, kof maybe in 5th place
