Excellent review. I've been using a P70 for about 5 years now and considering upgrading to one of these newer models. You're right that they're not the prettiest or most portable things, but the raw power, screen size, and incredible keyboard keep me coming back

Hello. Very professionally done review. No antics, just down to business which I appreciate. I wish you had let us listen to the fans under, say, business type loads (not encoding or gaming) or mentioned whether they whined and things like that. Perhaps you can comment from what you remember? All in all and excellently produced review. Thank you!

it's really useful to see the full module disassembly/replacement, because sometimes, the original RAM and SSD are soldered in, and you can only add more to the extra slots... as opposed to being able to replace everything. It's really important information that isn't told anywhere.

    • @MrFree-vj8qj

Workstations will never have soldered ram, if they did, it would be a 32gb and + per slot

I think it's a beautiful looking laptop. I work with CAD and render software. The port selection, the amount of power that you can pack on this unit is excellent. I've been going back and forth fourth between this unit and Dell's 7750. But I prefer the port layout on the P17. I also dislike that Dell reduced the arrow keys while Lenovo kept them full size. Would you ever consider doing a review on a Dell 7750?

Corporate discounts are superb on these. About 60% vs website pricing. I just picked up a fully loaded 6 core 32GB Quadro model for under $2000 CAD ($1500 USD) - can't be beat for the professional on the go.

Nice! This looks like the old 700-series models that IBM used to make back in the day. No frills, no flair, all business. Too bad nothing I do would justify buying such a monster.

If you add touch screen with digital pen, it will turn into a workhorse. If you load it up with proper programs and software, you can turn it into a mobile workstation office.

The "beast" as you call it is for certain type of users. Very good workstation. Camera and mic's are okay but not great but as you say will get the job done. It is interesting to note that you mentioned that the unit you tested goes for about $5.000 dollars. It makes one wonder what you get for the unit at the starting price of about $1,700. Anyway as always another great review.

Beats me why an industrial grade workstation has a toy ( cheap rear view dashcam quality) camera. I love thinkpads but this configuration in the world of 2021 Zoom makes absolutely no sense in a "workstation". Big oversight.

If you are considering the Thinkpad P17 Gen 2 please let think twice before you choose. The P17G2 has issue with left fan - impossible to fix by lenovo, even replacement of cooling system is not work, because the issue is with left fan. High pitched noise is unhealthy and your work will be not comfortable. I used many thinkpads, P,W,X,T and didnt have any issue like that before, this version GEN2 is totally failure, thermal problems and fan noise is not accepted for machine of this class. The issue is known on yt/reddit/lenovo forum. Please do not buy this machine, it is time and money wasting.

I think I'll wait for Gen 2. More likely I'll go for the Gen 2 T15g. I don't need workstation drivers, so I'd save about $1000 sticking with Geforce. I would like the bigger display, though.

Big, tough, powerful and looks like a classic ThinkPad - just bigger.
I think it would have to be my choice if I was in the market as, given its spec, it's not that pricey though probably costs more in the UK.

Big, beautiful, powerful and annoyingly overheating. Took it indeed for 50+mpx picture editing and already developed paranoia of this lovely beast going into drama-queen mode and shut down in the middle of everything, happens too often to be normal and it's just 6 months old. Lenovo thinks that 92+ degrees on full performance is okay (srsly?). Core i9vPro Gen 10 with rtx5000.

this is a shitty laptop the CPU throttles a lot you are paying premium for nothing for only 3.5Ghz of clock speed and the GPU wasn't involved in this really awful, and the problem is you can the p15 with the same configuration but less space for cooling so even worse performance, don't get shocked by what is written in paper think.
