    Just started following your reviews. Love the way you review the products. Everyone lease I see acts like fanboys. No one else I see the need to opens the case for those of us who like to upgrade and expand. Please keep your format of review. This is really substantive.

    I think 720p webcams should not even exist anymore in 2022. 1080p should be the bare minimum.

    Still rocking a P72 for 3 years now (the predecessor to the P17) and still awesome for what I need! It looks almost like brand new and the chassis is virtually indestructible. The alder lake refresh of both the P15 and P17 will be replaced by the P16 with a 16:10 display. The P17 gen 2 is the last 17" ThinkPad.

      Just bought myself a fully equipped P17 Gen 2. Just in time, couldn't let that go. I need a 17" workstation laptop. I guess I will be holding to it for many years from now 😉

      Aw that's kinda sad. 17" behemoth laptops are so charming to me, but I don't think I'll ever get my hands on a P17 if they're discontinuing them now. I guess on a practical standpoint the 16:10 P16 is pretty good, though.

    Nice PC. For the price one pays for this it should have a 1080p webcam. Webcam was fair but as you say will get the job done. Microphones sounded okay. Nice keyboard well laid out. NIce full size numpad and well laid out. Like the access to the inside for upgradeability. Excellent port selection. You mentioned that it comes in at 8 pounds. Does this include the weight of the power brick? This is great portability for moving it to one place to another in a car but it is not practical when traveling on airplanes. Overall a great PC when used as a workstation. Another great review as always.

    It's got those old-school Thinkpad vibes for sure. I would have gone with a wider trackpad to the right. This one looks so 2001. Priced for a niche market for sure.

    Great review! I have the ThinkPad P71, and have been wanting to upgrade. I have one question though, when you mentioned the SIM card slot, you said something about 5G. Is there actually an option for a 5G modem from the factory, or is t still just 4G LTE? I love my P71, but the fact that I can only use 4G is what makes me want to upgrade. I need that N71 band! 😁

A version with a gen 5 and 10 so to say... Truthfully they need to offer upgrades(system board with ddr5 for example) or buy new... I would gladly pay for that!

    In less than two years, my P17 Gen 1 BIOS failed, disabling the keyboard and track pad. Also, the Windows 10 Start Button and tray were disabled, leaving no option but to wipe the drive and reload from a USB stick. That failed, too, requiring a motherboard replacement, coming soon. My unit came with only a 170 watt charger. Yours has a 230 watts. Sounds like I was shortchanged. I'll look into that. Be sure to buy the five year on-site repair program and the three year battery replacement warranty. Otherwise you will have to ship to a repair depot and pay full replacement costs after your factory warranty expires.

    Aside from the durability/serviceability and generally great Linux compatibility/support, it is that little TrackPoint that keeps me buying Lenovo ThinkPads. After developing a RSI from decades of using mice and trackpads, switching over to the TrackPoint let me work without pain... 🙂

    It's really a shame they put a sad 720p webcam in these. They have more than enough space for a 1080p cam. Looking at the P17 Gen 2 (i7/32GB/A2000/UHD display) for work. Heck, it's probably a little overkill, but better to buy more than you need today because demands of the next 4 or 5 years won't get any lower. I don't mind a hefty 17" laptop in the slightest for getting work done. This thing should eat graphics/video/desktop publishing without blinking.

    • @MuantanamoMobile
      @MuantanamoMobile Рік тому

      Price...they want to keep the final price and power consumption low. They could also add configurable options but I guess they figured it wasn't worth the hustle as it complicates manufacturing.
      So since most people using these are primarily using them for work related tasks they figure 720 is good enough, and an external device could be used for anything else.

    9.75 hours of battery life under normal load (web surfing over wifi)? Is that power efficiency over the 10th gen Xeon real? I have the t15g gen 1 with the w-10855m, and it probably get 2+ hours, on average about 15% CPU load while web browsing.

    That cost does not reflect performance even in professional applications. A decent gaming laptop easily outperforms this professional laptop in professional applications. What professional laptops offer is stability of the work. Basically big companies buy a bunch of professional laptops for their workers and the laptop manufacturers guarantee that their professional laptops will work stable and without crashes in professional applications and this is the only thing you pay such huge price for. This is basically it. There is literally no computing power benefits in professional laptops.
