i genuinely got so excited when i saw the tier list. for some reason that was like one of my favorite part of the kirby no jump series and i'm glad to see it return
It's hard to describe how emotionally invested I get in the possibility of beating a game with a pointless handicap, but it happens everytime this channel uploads.
About the C-stick: I know this is true in Smash 4 and it Ultimate, so I'm sure a similar thing is going on in Brawl, but the macro thing is true. In 4 and Ult, if you assign special moves to the C-stick, and then hold down the B button, it'll register your C-stick inputs as if you'd inputted a direction for one frame. This allowed you to pull off some pretty specific tech (known as Bidou) but for the purposes of this challenge, it'd probably make entering doors a lot easier. Again, assuming it works the same as in Smash 4 and Ultimate.
I haven’t heard anyone talk about bidou in a long time, and I didn’t even know it was in ultimate, but that’s probably because it wouldn’t be as useful as it was back in smash 4
This feels like an anime with the c stick being the power system. Even at the end the main chatacter has to solve the true nature of the c stick itself.
I don't know if I've seen any other goofy challenge video in this genre that involves such a deep mechanical understanding of every single individual aspect of the game being played like this one... bravo my dude, excellent watch.
Brawl has some really weird unique stuff in it that make it perfect for this sort of challenge, too. SDI is the strongest (in terms of total effective distance) of any smash game, though part of that comes from being able to do SDI inputs with both the control stick and C-stick separately, unlike Melee where only one of the two can give an SDI input each frame iirc, or the later games where SDI is just massively weaker in general. With twin-sticking you can actually go from one side of a grounded DK up-B to the other, and back, and over and back again, before the move ends. If you wanna see what I mean, look for "Mr Doom's SDI sucks" and you'll see some examples from competitive play back when Brawl was the current game. Honestly single-stick SDI might still have been enough to use Link instead of Yoshi->Mario for the cave level, but with how low the hitlag on bombs are I'm not sure. Honestly, even with the amount of hours I spent on vanilla Brawl as a kid and on Project M in middle and high school, I'm still amazed seeing new things in both teleporting ZSS and the C-stick door access.
@@iruleatgames To be fair, the ABC has ascended beyond being a simple "challenge run" at this point--it's essentially _the_ challenge run to end all challenge runs. If the ABC crew ever gets the count to zero, gaming is just solved forever. It'll be over at that point. There's nowhere left to go.
I appreciate how you just tried everything at the platform at the end even though it made absolutely no sense. Because can you imagine how incredibly hype it would have been if it was like "yeah turns out Ivysaur's Razor Leaf pushes you through platforms" or some crazy bullshit like that
This was honestly one of the best challenges I’ve ever seen. I went into this knowing full well that Kirby would not make it past subspace, but I was proven super wrong. Also that finale with the platform was honestly insane.
I genuinely teared up at the end. You're such a powerful and compelling storyteller that watching Zero Suit Samus spot dodge twenty times and then drop through a platform literally brought tears to my eyes. That's amazing.

36:55 Kirby's forward air pushes you a tiny bit because of the C-stick macro. The control stick input part of the macro moves you a tiny bit forward if you're in the air

Holy shit you're one of the only people on youtube who could make a 10 minute section about one damn plataform and still make it the most entertaining thing I've seen this entire week
You're a legend. Not just for trying to complete this challenge (especially the final hurdle), but the entertaining commentary mixed with clearly explaining the techniques you used makes for a really interesting video. Editing is also on point, especially with the little sound effects. Great video!
I'm not gonna lie, as a Brawl/Melee player, I already knew you could shield drop with the C stick sometimes, but the editing was still excellent. And the OMORI music goes crazy!
Bruh, that ending was more satisfying than any anime ending I've ever seen. Also, props to you for having the patience and sheer force of will to sit through ALL of this!
The amount of time and effort Sample puts into these videos is unreal, and it always pays off in droves! Some of the best written and put together content on the site, and every time I think the challenges can’t get more insane, we get “beat a platformer without platforming”. Always puts a smile on my face! So much respect, keep it up!!
I... I don't even know what to say. This was a fantastic journey and I am so glad to have witnessed it. Thanks for all of this, mate, it was a blast to witness
I can confirm that your theory about the C Stick being a macro input is in fact true; it's that way in SSBU, and it's a part of the reason the input system is one of the things people dislike the most when comparing it to Melee
I'm fairly certain it's always been a macro (sam for the grab button), it's just that Ultimate makes you reset the stick to neutral to throw another move (but on the other hand, you can charge Smash attacks with the C-Stick)
I really enjoyed this video from the challenge itself to the narrative of the big roadblocks to the tier list to the music choices to the editing to the clear explanations of what's happening. Love this video and love your channel
I’m getting so much nostalgia from both the music and the gameplay. Somehow I’m familiar with most/all of it, including the Undertale music, Ace Attorney music, Omori music, Celeste music, etc. Thank you for bringing back so many memories.
I legit played Brawl for the first time in a good while yesterday, I hooked up a Classic controller, and then I wondered why I couldn’t charge smash attacks. This explains it. Congrats on a successful challenge, it was super interesting to watch!
Subspace Emissary is the only reason why I come back to Brawl every once in a while. I liked the structure of the commentary and the tier list for the no move roster. This was fun to watch!
This is actually such a god tier video. It’s hard to make a 50 minute video entertaining the whole way through, especially since I’ve played brawl half my life, and yet I’ve rewatched this things without skipping a second like 6 times and I’m ready to watch it again. Golf clap sir
I wouldn't be able to complete this game with moving, let alone without. This is incredible! By the way, amazing music choices too, it really added emphasis to the video.
It could have been so easy at so many points to throw your hands in the air and say "screw it, it's actually impossible" then do what everyone else does and turn challenge into "least joystick moves" but you didn't. And I'm so amazed by that
i felt the silent “show me ya moves” taunt after tabuu was defeated in the last 5 seconds WITH MY SOUL. awesome challenge fun video even if the corpse party bgm jumpscared the hell out of me
My guess for the reason the B input is lost to go in doors is simply landing lag. Incase you didn't know there is a window of a few frames after landing from certain actions that stops most inputs from registering. Since doors are not part of the "main game" I'm guessing they either have something missing or added to the code, allowing them to be entered during landing lag.
Honestly the only reason I prefer sample’s runs over every other challenge video is that in all of them there is some form of obstacle that he gets through by the most weird and obscure thing which makes these feel so much more fun then just finding one really good thing to help with the challenge and then winning it because it’s op or giving up entirely
Hi sam! ever since i saw this video within the first few minutes of it being uploaded, I wanted to do my own moveless run seeing as super smash bros melee is fun around 26% of the time for me. Anyways, today i got a iso for brawl and found out a few more movement techs with some characters. Pit: You can use up-special to move a good distance horizontally if you press the c-stick right/left multiple times, you can actually move forward for more precise spacing by spotdodging Peach: you can use side special into an enemy and carry the momentum with float/neutral special Marth: probably not faster and also super inconsistent but if you mash b while using side special marth will step forward multiple times wow Link: I THINK shooting an arrow can move you forward a tiny bit Charizard: Neutral special pushes you back just a tiny bit King dedede: F-Smash Any character with a tether: great for crossing gaps and recovering offstage The ledge: ledge jumps and rolls are great
There's so many challenge videos that would've given up at that last platform, but I'm happy how hard you tried to figure it out and succeeded. Even if you hadn't, I'd have been impressed with all the tech you learned about in the process, but it's so satisfying to see it pay off in the end letting you beat this ridiculous challenge
Literally my first thought was to hold the other buttons to only get the movement inputs out of the C stick lmao Awesome that it was the final answer! It's insane that this is even possible Also Kirby's redemption arc went crazy Great video :)
there are different cooldowns for a B input and a directional input, so spamming the c-stick fast enough in some situations will cause a directional input before the B button cooldown finishes
C-stick movement with the B button held has been a known tech for a long time, even having applications in competitive play such as c-stick shield dropping in Melee and Bidou (a set of tech using this that includes sliding spotdodge, easier perfect pivoting, and more) in Smash 4. I feel bad for you that you had to take all this time to figure it out for yourself, but it's also cool to see people discover tech on their own. Overall, I really enjoyed this video.
As soon as the ground rules were set, I was gonna be like "well obviously not, the question is just when will it turn into a minimum control stick challenge." Was _very_ surprised with how it ended up going, and the editing and voiceover was super well done and entertaining. Fantastic vid.
I was gonna be unsatisfied that the video abruptly ended at the final platform but the way you did the ending was so immaculate that I loved it This is absolutely my favorite video you've made so far!! Keep up the genuinely incredible work And keep having an amazing taste in music!
We have come full circle. Going from no movement to moving in our immobility. Truly, Sample has graced us with the content we many not have wanted but certainly needed. God bless you sir and I hope your sanity comes back after what appears to be an actual teeth pulling experience.
I swear you have the best background music choices I’ve every heard. They pretty much all are from some of my favourite games ever and it’s just so satisfying to hear while you are explaining what you’re doing.
This is genuinely one of the most impressive challenge videos I’ve ever seen. Like it’s a platforming story mode that relies so much on moving how in the world could it be possible? Fortunately I was proven wrong. Amazing video keep up the great work!!
Subspace without joystick, huh? Looking forward to seeing how things go. Will be fun to see that tierlist fill out. Cursed C-stick mvp Thinking about later on, I know there's that one level near the end where your only option is Kirby, so that one won't work. Didn't expect to get past the Porky statue, honestly, didn't think there would be enough speed. The psi magnet adding extra movement past the PK fire is neat. Marth can be heard, incredible. Meta Knight is still decent, of course. Even if they aren't the best, the guy has no real weak points. Link with the bomb, I assume a similar ranking will occur with snake, same idea. Uh oh, ladders. Poor main gang, none being super great. Bunch of quick levels, there. Ike's pretty decent. Based on C-stick stuff, I'm guessing a well timed C-stick while falling to go through the semi solid is the solution. Guess not. Shield tech. Well, that's cool, a true success, those are rare in challenge runs, usually it's just getting the least amount. Nice work!
Dude, I live for challenges like this. The problem solving involved in all facets of the run (but especially the ending) is so entertaining. Loved this video!
got this video recommended to me and decided to watch it. not disappointed in the slightest, you're genuinely funny and the video was incredibly entertaining. not every day I watch through a whole 50 minute video without disengaging midway. new sub now :)
The macro theory is spot on. If I had to guess, you pressed up during landing lag after the special, which prevented it from being used again for a few frames but still let you go through the door.
Bruh, Super Smash Bros Brawl used to be my favorite game before my Wii broke. Nice to see that people are still playing it. I always played as Meta Knight.
4:46 Funnily enough, not the first time I've seen code compared to Hollow Knight void. 21:36 Omg you earned that joke. xD 26:26 I assumed it was a chess joke? 39:32 I've never heard Bready Steady Go used so dramatically. 48:40 How the hell did you make me emotional with this, bringing in By Your Side as you lamented over the whole challenge, it all combining into one final, simple obstacle, and proving your challenge complete, is amazing.
i really do love how at the end of this challenge, all the knowlege, tricks, and abilities you learnt as you played were tested ..by a floor piece its like how normal games are supposed to indeed test all you learnt, except, challenge!
I will never stop admiring the HUGE amount of patience this must take. Like, I now subspace like the palm of my hand but I would definitely quit this challenge after the first level lmao Anyways, amazing vid as always!!
Found you through the commentated tas kirby vid getting recommended and stayed ever since. You make some wonderfully stupid things happen in these games with great editing and humor with it, keep up the great work!
Hey man I've loved your content, and I'm also a really big fan of Smallant, and on his stream he was saying he stumbled across your videos and loved them! Game recognizes game I guess
I don't even play Smash, but I found this video to be very entertaining. I'm glad you've kept making these challenges because they're great, and super interesting. Great video!
I saw this in my recommended and I forgot that I was subscribed. I wonder why it hasn't been recommending me these videos. They're really cool and this was amazing!
For that C-stick door thing. What’s probably happening is you’re pressing cstick up during your landing frames. So you aren’t actionable, so you can do an up b. But the game recognizes that you pressed up so it goes through when you’re actionable again
Heyo so apparently Im a bigshot now and there be scambots roaming about. Be careful while I call in the extermination squad.

Bro in “the boys” section of the video I love how Mario and Yoshi work together on it it proves that my society of yoshis can be useful
When the world needed him most he returned
got this video recommended to me and decided to watch it. not disappointed in the slightest, you're genuinely funny and the video was incredibly entertaining. not every day I watch through a whole 50 minute video without disengaging midway. new sub now :)
Why does this man play every game I'm nostalgic for 😭
49:20 when I first saw you nudge the shield slightly I immediately thought of shield dropping and man I’m so glad I was right
I love seeing sample pop up, and making a challange in my favorite franchise ever. Thanks for making this, it made my day so much better.
This was a ton of fun to watch! Thanks for the Audible trial and suggestion as well!
amazing video, forgot how awesome subspace's story is and your humor is very on point
As someone who loves Subspace, this video is amazing! Watching this makes me want to play it again…
The macro theory is spot on. If I had to guess, you pressed up during landing lag after the special, which prevented it from being used again for a few frames but still let you go through the door.
Man's really came up with a challenge, found out everyone's done it, so decided to screw it and go for a harder challenge. You, my friend, are insane.
I love how the final boss isn’t the actual final boss Taboo but a platform
Bruh, Super Smash Bros Brawl used to be my favorite game before my Wii broke. Nice to see that people are still playing it. I always played as Meta Knight.
Kirby’s arc in this story was surprisingly inspiring
4:46 Funnily enough, not the first time I've seen code compared to Hollow Knight void.
21:36 Omg you earned that joke. xD
26:26 I assumed it was a chess joke?
39:32 I've never heard Bready Steady Go used so dramatically.
48:40 How the hell did you make me emotional with this, bringing in By Your Side as you lamented over the whole challenge, it all combining into one final, simple obstacle, and proving your challenge complete, is amazing.
Can we all just appreciate the chapter names. They're great
i really do love how at the end of this challenge, all the knowlege, tricks, and abilities you learnt as you played were tested
..by a floor piece
its like how normal games are supposed to indeed test all you learnt, except, challenge!
7:16 actually it's oil up
I will never stop admiring the HUGE amount of patience this must take. Like, I now subspace like the palm of my hand but I would definitely quit this challenge after the first level lmao
Anyways, amazing vid as always!!
The C Stick is indeed a Macro. Grab is also a Macro of Shield and A
Came across this in my recommended, and it was just incredible. I got so invested. Take my like
I feel bad for your girlfriend 😔 0:18
Found you through the commentated tas kirby vid getting recommended and stayed ever since. You make some wonderfully stupid things happen in these games with great editing and humor with it, keep up the great work!
Damn the C stick does a lot more than I remember
Why was this so emotional at the end, somewhat holding back tears with the conclusion of this adventure...
My favorite part of the episode was when Kirby went “It’s kirbin time” and proceeded to kirb all over the place.
Your long-ass videos are really well-made and are enjoyable all the way through. That takes skill.
ironic that kirby of all characters is unusable for most of the run
6:55 as it should it's clearly her hip people can be so annoying about it
This is literally the best challenge run video I have ever seen. Your ability to create a narrative and compelling story is INCREDIBLE.
This is my favorite one of these “is it possible” challenges
30:07-30:09 "for my first maneuver I blow myself up" iconic
Im only halfway through this video and i burst out laughing like 3 times, i love the writing and the style of these videos. Keep it up!
Update I watched the rest and laughed 5 more times
I saw this in my recommended and I forgot that I was subscribed. I wonder why it hasn't been recommending me these videos. They're really cool and this was amazing!
For that C-stick door thing. What’s probably happening is you’re pressing cstick up during your landing frames. So you aren’t actionable, so you can do an up b. But the game recognizes that you pressed up so it goes through when you’re actionable again
