I remember hitching from Edinburgh to London about 93 maybe 94 and a guy stopped probably outside Carlisle in the north of England. He asked me to play a song. It was about 2 am, I started to play Hello in there. We sung the whole way to London, he was so happy I knew all the old classics. A lot of time has passed since then I've quit busking and traveling but moments like that don't happen by chance. I'm still in touch with that man to this day. When ever I go back home we'll still play hello in there together. Now his eyes are ancient and I'm about the age he was when we first met. My advice to any young kids learning to play a guitar is learn the old stuff. Those songs are your best friend.
I saw John Prine at a festival in London back in 2004. Only went to see him because it started hammering down with freezing hail and he was playing in a tent. Happiest accident. He was funny, charming and his songs were sublime. Been a fan ever since. Goodbye John.
This has got to be one of the most touching Tiny Desk Concerts of all time. John Prine had an amazing ability to express the human condition through lyrics, whether the song was a funny little ditty or a sad tale.
I've left this comment on another video. I just love the heart felt comments from all the artists that are paying tribute to this great man. I'm a graphic designer and wish I could be a musician. John went to high school with my older brother and sis way back in the day...Proviso East in Maywood, IL. I did as well but graduated in 1982. Unfortunately my brother passed at 45 when I was 30. That was 25 years ago, but brother Bob introduced me to John and his music. I was fortunate to hear and see him at the Old Town School of Folk Music many times. GOD BLESS him, his music, his family.and all of you who love John!

Prine always reminds me of my Mamma. As a kid, I used to see her crying listening to Prine. I couldn’t stand him as a child. Life was hard for a single mother with a 10th grade education. No help from the government. No help from my father. No help from family, they were poor than us. She was the hardest working person, and the most loving person I have ever met. She never had it easy from day one but she sure loved her boys. I have a great life because of her. John Prine is my favorite songwriter. I hope they’re now both in paradise. Singing about an illegal smiles. While fishing and Whistling.
Just when I think I'm done crying about losing John....this happens. I hung in there strong until Nathaniel got me. Others said it before me but it's just so true that I'll say it too: John was the best friend I never got to meet....and though we didn't know each other he wrote my life in song. Thanks for the souvenirs, John...I'll never let go of them.
Sam Stone was alone, when he popped his last balloon. But John Prine could never be alone if he tries. Too many of us folk love him. His heart is crowded. Here's to the flag on your hill, John ❤️
@@elinannestad5320 How did Mozart or Orson Welles or The Beatles do what they did at such a young age? Some people just have old souls, I guess. John's was old and filled with love and empathy.

I only got to see John live once. Same with his buddy Steve Goodman. Both remain seminal concerts in my 65 years of living. Thanks, John, for making life better for everyone who ever listened to your music. May God grant you peace and rest.
John Prine was one of the most unique songwriters ever, and those of us who grew up knowing his music are so lucky. My parents both loved him, and I think it's why I have an appreciation for feelings that by all rights should have been more adult than my years would've allowed. What a genuine loss to the world, and what a beautiful way to honor him.

I’ve been watching and reading all the tributes for the past couple weeks - they started before he passed - and this was the one that finally made me cry. Wonderful job, everybody.
Beautiful tributes by some amazing voices. I was introduced to John’s music in 1979 by a college roommate. That album was Bruised Orange and those songs still bring a smile to my face. It was great to hear “That’s the way the world goes round”, which was on that album. Peace, John.
I spent three hours last night watching this Tiny Desk and then listening to the two duet albums and then finishing with Tree of Forgiveness twice. The poetry and craft in Tree is as stunning as that very first album which so amazed us.
John Prine , Bob Dylan . Give or take . Both , I say . Each having their own words . Each believing in themselves . John and Bob . Both so deep . Both Legends . Both could be played into the sunrise on any day of the year except on Holy Days . Peter I will play both .
Hey Brandy, greetings from Scotland. Really beautiful rendition of one of Johns greatest songs. Really sums up his very unrecognised talent for writing songs with sadness and joy combined. What a loss ... keep playing and bringing joy x
What terrific songs you all chose. I am moved by your presentations. What outstanding talents! It is so fitting that you have met John and played with him. That had to be the highlights of your singing careers. I am so happy for all of you. I am the same age as John Prine and I only discovered him a few months before he left us. My favorite concert in my 63 years was John Prine and doctor john at F& M. College in Lancaster,Pa. Wicked blizzard delayed John arrival. Dr. John kept us entertained. John came out and told us the harrowing story of his drive though the blizzard in a VW drive. By a college student then said he won't be going anywhere for a awhile and played for hours. Heavenly. I swear he played every song in he had ever recorded. I will never forget that show.

I love to think John is now in Heaven among the angels and all singing his beautiful songs with him. R.I.P.
A great man and his music is now a great legacy, RIP John.
So saddened to hear of the passing of the great John Prine. Rest In Peace my friend
Pure magic in the wake of bottomless sorrow. A perfect tribute.
NPR really trying hard to make me cry today
They succeeded in my case. Rest in Peace, Mr. Prine.
It was the words "John Prine Tribute" and I started crying before I even clicked. Now I'm balling uncontrollably
@@moleratical7634 it's a year later and still crying

Me too buddy, me too.
Beautiful performance of Sam Stone! Thank you all for the tribute.
BIG LOVE TO YOU ALL !! R.I.P JOHN !! WE LOVE DONW HERE IN SP BRASIL!!
I saw John Prine probably been 25 years ago now. Leo Kottke opened up for him at a small venue called the Orpheum Theater in Omaha Nebraska. One of my favorite shows ever. My heart broke when I heard of John's passing.
I’ve been watching and reading all the tributes for the past couple weeks - they started before he passed - and this was the one that finally made me cry. Wonderful job, everybody.
Merci beaucoup, de France !!!
Nathaniel Rateliff sings other people's songs with as much love as if they were his own. How bout that.
Cash me outside!!!
It was beautiful. If I ever wrote a song that good, I'd want someone like Nathaniel to cover it, so he could show me what I meant by it.
The only worthy version besides the original
Beautiful tributes by some amazing voices. I was introduced to John’s music in 1979 by a college roommate. That album was Bruised Orange and those songs still bring a smile to my face. It was great to hear “That’s the way the world goes round”, which was on that album. Peace, John.
I spent three hours last night watching this Tiny Desk and then listening to the two duet albums and then finishing with Tree of Forgiveness twice. The poetry and craft in Tree is as stunning as that very first album which so amazed us.
The Sam Stone one is real special.
John Prine , Bob Dylan . Give or take . Both , I say . Each having their own words . Each believing in themselves .
John and Bob . Both so deep . Both Legends . Both could be played into the sunrise on any day of the year except on Holy Days . Peter
I will play both .
John Paul White you did that proud, Thnx. I felt that, sir!!
Ms. Andrews, that was as tender and heartfelt as anything I've heard, well done, wonderful tribute.
Bravo Tiny Desk and to all performers! You have left us with a tear and a smile, as he did so often.May he rest in peace.
You have the voice of an angel. John is smiling to hear you sing. Simply beautiful dear.
A beautiful tribute to a wonderful artist. Thank you all. RIP John Prine.
Great tribute to John Prine. He will be well remembered by his music.
Hey Brandy, greetings from Scotland. Really beautiful rendition of one of Johns greatest songs. Really sums up his very unrecognised talent for writing songs with sadness and joy combined. What a loss ... keep playing and bringing joy x
❤️ Nathaniel Ratecliff and John Prine
Thanks Bob Boilen & NPR. Brandie Clark's rendition of this classic was so powerful, it seems that this song was made for her to sing.
Loving these tiny desk concerts from home. You are helping to make all this bearable
I need these covers on spotify, how beautiful and moving. I keep coming back...
John, I just want to dance with you. Wait, you already sang & danced with all of us.
What terrific songs you all chose. I am moved by your presentations. What outstanding talents! It is so fitting that you have met John and played with him. That had to be the highlights of your singing careers. I am so happy for all of you. I am the same age as John Prine and I only discovered him a few months before he left us. Since I have found these cool ear pods . . . Ihave fallen asleep listening to his music almost nightly.
