Bob Weir would be known as a national treasure in any other country. Fantastic band. Sublime versions of Bird Song and Ripple with Mikaela Davis. Something so American about this music played this way - its of its place.
Story time! I was at this performance and it was of course amazing, as you can see here. After "Only a River", Jay asked Bob what they'd be playing next, and Bob said "Masterpiece". Well at that time, I said "nice!" rather loudly (you can't really hear it here) and that's why there was some laughter and Bob said "we just got clearance to do this one". I went home that day very stoked to have had this brief interaction with Bobby. Really incredible day, all in all.

That Bird Song: yes Mikaela elevated it to the next level. With that, the rhythm section quietly marched on. Jay with his brushes and Don keeping it in the pocket- big time. Bob Weir comes in an just transforms the chemical break down of everything in the room after doing this for 55 years. Oh, this band compliments wonderfully Bobby’s unorthodox rhythm playing, which is lost on many live recordings as well, especially with the louder instruments. He often seems turned down the mix. This is special one.
My first album ever, 9 yrs old in 1976 was Steal Your Face. The Dead have always been central to the soundtrack of my life. I have sooo many incredible memories of dead shows, all of the cool people and fun times. Ive seen over 100 different bands in concerts over the years. There is nothing that comes close to the Grateful Dead live. Hearing bob's voice brought it all rushing back, you have to appreciate a good flashback.
This is heartening. Love how the audience gently joined in on Ripple. Brings me back to memories of wonderful and colourful friends. Mikaela Davis' harp playing adds so much to these pieces.🌺

Bird Song was meant to have a harp in it... beautiful. That song takes me back to a medieval era where a group of people are gathered around a fire in the middle of the village while a musician plays this tune on a mandolin.... I don't know why it does, but it does.
I for one, am thankful that Mikela's harp was strung for this concert, her interpretation really captured the Grateful dead spirit. Gem of a concert, keep on truckin' ❤️

Bobby has never sounded better, as far as I am concerned. There is wisdom and real soul, his soul in his voice here and in his playing..., like a sage reciting a tale of the history of a family,... the Family of Man....having walked miles and miles and miles and finally kicking his boots off so he can drop both weary feet.........in the cool healing water of The River.
the stunned silence at the end of Birdsong... speechless, transported, stunning. what a tribute this is to Bobs tender, creative and brilliant musicality so easily overlooked with the Dead but front and center here.
Saw my 1st show 11/10/84 in NJ. Gotta say that it makes me cry to see Bobby sing Jerry songs. The Birdsong was amazing! Jerry approved and smiled from Heaven I’m sure.

I've watched this dozens of times, and only now realized this: "Only a River" is the sequel to "Sugar Magnolia". The narrator/singer lost his girl years ago and wants to find her memory again down by the riverside. This is part of my theory of many many Dead songs existing in one interconnected, interwoven, and continuous story across generations. Some of the narrators/characters might be those mentioned in other songs ie. the baby who "dont look like me" in "Friend of the Devil" or the other brothers from "Brown Eyed Women" could be Jack Straw or the gambler in "Loser". Please help me fill in the gaps in the story, the connections from one story song to another.
For that matter, "Bird Song" could be the bridge between the two songs. "Sugar Magnolia" tells the story of his whirlwind love with the girl, "Bird Song" grieves her loss immediately after her death, and "Only a River" is his lament decades later as an older man who has never forgotten his true love. P.S. They played Miles Davis in the "Bird Song" jam, and that is awesome!!!!

Bob is the most enduringly creative musician on the planet, there is a midas touch to everything he engages in and the brilliance of this performance is shared by his collaborators. Sublime.
Um, no disrespect but... Herbie Hancock ? Wynton Marsalis? Bill Frisell? Chick Corea? There are musicians on this planet who are FAR more creative. This is a fine set, and in truth Don Was is the best musician in this band.
@@jasonwilcox6334 All very good too, but operating in a vastly different area so there can be no direct comparison. I like Bach and Stockhausen , but wouldn't dream to draw comparisons. On a purely technical basis Don Was is usually the best musician wherever he plays, but creativity and virtuosity are not necessarily synonymous virtues. At the end of the day it will always be about personal tastes. For most people music is primarily experienced through the emotions rather than by intellectual analysis, although the complexity of the field in which the jazz greats play will always elicit the latter, which is no bad thing.
That bird song was just beautiful with the harp! And seeing Bobby's eyes during the first line of ripple, thinking of Jerry living through the music... made me tear up!

My goodness, that harp! Wow! It was so beautiful to hear : ) Mesmerizing! And the girl who played it knew exactly how not to push it too much and have it overpower the band, especially in that last song, kudos to her for knowing how to just lay it on gently like a littttttle bit of pepper on the egg ;-) ...beautiful harp player and awesome addition to the band for this gig, loved it!

What an absolute legend!
Love "Only a River" - one of Bobby's best compositions!
After I got done. I was like WHAT JUST HAPPENED! This was a ride. Such a gem
Love is real. Not fade away. Thank you NPR! 💀⚡💗
He sounds great man! Love his guitar playing
Me too friend
I was thinking the same thing. You could see it on his face.
"im pretty sure we're over our t- time limit" bob play for 7 hours ill cry to every song. forever one of my fav humans and songwriters/guitar players. inspired me, n may the love, magic, and music spread to generations and beyond. i feel as my soul is being wrapped in a golden blanket. kissed by the sun

What epic secrets of hippiedom this man must walk around with inside him...
I think it's just lots and lots of money, since he's dating a woman that's literally of an age to be his granddaughter lol
Life is a pancake
They aren't secrets if they can't be remembered…
, that’s his lovely wife
@@leshtricityHe's married to her and she's 52, although he did meet her when she was 15
R.I.P. Steve Hribernik, who took me to see my first GD concert at 16 years old.
"if my tunes, were played on a harp unstrung. " have to say i started sobbing right then. wish jerry were around to hear that line with a harp in the band.
I love how Don Was always takes a back seat! Pretty humble guy.
The giant harp and the stand-up bass, together sound so sick!!
That Bird Song was bananas
My goodness, that harp! Wow! It was so beautiful to hear : ) Mesmerizing! And the girl who played it knew exactly how not to push it too much and have it overpower the band, especially in that last song, kudos to her for knowing how to just lay it on gently like a littttttle bit of pepper on the egg ;-) ...beautiful harp player and awesome addition to the band for this gig, loved it!
