      For us, having the luxury to look in as outsiders, not even in their universe, perhaps. But for a woman who is in the actual relationship, unsure of whether her touch or look or presence pleases her partner or causes distaste, and unaccustomed to the fact that it uniformly causes neither, the relationship might be torture. Human beings in a relationship want their love and care verifiably reciprocated; they see validation and fulfillment in the other's emotions...passion for passion, joy for joy. We are, in the end, far pettier creatures than Data can hope to aspire towards.

      I wouldn't say that. Data was seeing this as a chance to learn and understand one of the most complex elements of humanity in the form of a romantic relationship. Unfortunately, it seems that his own progress on his journey to become more human hadn't progressed to the point where he could have a true emotional investment yet in that sort of relationship. So I think he still found the time he spent with her to be productive, even if the result was him realizing he still wasn't "there" yet.

    I think the moment with spot is very telling and beautiful. They say animals have a way of detecting our moods and how we feel, and spot immediatly went to data as if to comfort him after his breakup. Even though Data cannot feel emotion, spot could detect that in his own way, he was hurting or upset, and went over to try and make him 'feel' better.

      The writers of TNG explained Data's equivalent of emotions very well all the way back at Tasha's death. While Data could not feel conventional grief, Tasha added something to his experiences that was enriching and valuable. The removal of her input into Data's consciousness was indeed a state he did not prefer to exist in. And so he "felt" a genuine sense of loss, and was preoccupied with the reality that there was no way to get the state of being around Tasha back. It was gone forever. And thus Picard saw that Data did in fact understand loss.

    That girl really liked him as long as he was just being himself...
    As soon as he started to write relationship-subroutines he became quite a creep because he started to imitate bad human stereotypes.
    Poor girl also... wanted to be in a relationship with one nice guy and ended up making the guy trying to be bad imitations of other guys...

    I rewatched this episode last night after several years. It's such a subtle but meaningful episode. We can't have relationships without emotion. It would have been nice to see Data in a relationship, but alas, this episode reaches the heartbreaking, harsh, but logical conclusion, that Data simply can't carry on a true romantic relationship.

    • @Crystal-rv5ys
      @Crystal-rv5ys 6 років тому

      Sam Mills That's a very old comment, but I wanted to answer just for fun ^^
      I too think this episod to be very meaningful. If we read between the lines, it's not so much about Data but about love in general. There are important lessons to be drawn from the episod, like the fact that one should love their mate for who they are instead of trying to change them. It also tells a lot about the difference between mere attraction (like what Jenna feels) and true involvement (Data consciously chose to dedicate much memory and resources to the routine). And it teaches an important final lesson : one should be aware of the possible repeating pattern they are experiencing when choosing a wrong mate once again. Loads of interesting things here !
      That being said, I don't agree on the idea that Data could never have a romantic relationship. I am pretty sure he could actually be a wonderful spouse ; but only for the right person. He'd need someone who knows a lot about cybernetics, logics and computer sciences, and who would be okay with what "dating a droid" encompasses - like the fact he can't exactly feel emotion. That makes me think a lot about the manga called Chobits, in which a man ends up dating his female persocom (for personal computers, human-like computers) despite knowing she can never love him like a human would.

    What I liked about that particular comment, so timed, was the context. "I have expended a large amount of resources in its creation." Follow that with her little, "Nothing I can say or do will make you happy or sad... or touch you in any way." Then he follows it with that? Talk about a verbal backhand.

    This episode was one of my favorites. surprisingly, I've watched it over last week after 2 decades, and I must suggest that this breakup clearly shows Data to be an incompetent partner to a human female, a fact I only could have comprehended by a second viewing and a lot of life experience. As a teenager I thought it would be cool to see Data fall in love with a female. This time I've understood that even in 'Picard' we don't get to see him raising a family. That's a shame, imho

    • @fingerboxes
      @fingerboxes 3 роки тому +10

      I think it depends more on what you want out of a relationship than what species the partners are. Sure, it sounds a bit callous when he says he will delete the appropriate files, but from another angle, he wanted to connect with her so badly that he wrote a suite of files and programs that he thought would assist him in doing so. He did his best. He fundamentally changed himself for her--not just his home and his schedule but his very core. That wasn't enough for her. Geordi has a much better relationship with Data because Geordi appreciates Data as he is, not for what he wants Data to be.
      I do think Data could have a fulfilling romantic relationship if the other person had relationship goals that were appropriately in tune with Data's nature. What I look for in someone is the ability to carry on meaningful conversations and learn stuff I didn't know before. I friendzoned someone because every time I had a conversation above a third grade reading level with her, her eyes glossed over and she stared at me like a dead fish and said she had street smarts and not book smarts. She offered to provide for me financially and travel around the world with me, but that wasn't enough to overcome the fact that she wanted to know why we couldn't dissect fetus brains so we can tell their parents if they're going to grow up to be gay or straight and how it was possible that un-contacted tribes in the Amazon had never heard of Jesus because hadn't they ever asked themselves what it was two thousand years since (yes, she did seriously ask both those questions). I think I could probably have a decently fulfilling relationship with Data because I'm pretty sure he could always have something interesting to talk about.

    If there was a reason this relationship failed, it was because she expected something she never properly asked for. Data responds well to overt suggestions and direct communication, and struggles to understand innuendo, as hard as he tries. This is made clear with every interaction you could possibly have with him. So, if that's the case, why should he have to do all the work here? He was perfectly communicative to her. He didn't lie to her, he didn't expect anything other than what he directly stated.
    In the end, it was her that could not read the room, not him. The moment she started to process the way that he works, she just gave up. She didn't even try to understand him. The moment she decided that he didn't care about her, she stopped thinking about it.

      Well observed. It has always been my view that it isn't that Data never had emotions before the emotion chip. It is more like they were latent or ambient at most but full process could not be experienced as we would until the final step taken in Generations.
      That said, as posed in the episode "Measure of a Man" it is asked by the woman with the gavel, does Data have a soul? I like to think Data indeed would have a soul as he is much more than a console and like Pinnochio, was maybe granted life by something beyond the mundane who became the son to his own creator.

    Data forces her to mentally own up to her words, breaking the chances of her ignoring the realization with the next unemotional person she meets.

    There's no longer any turning back for Jenna.
