The green screen is dead-on effective because you did an absolutely amazing job of nailing the lighting in every shot to match the background. This is so good on so many levels.
Seriously a masterpiece. Found it and racked up 4 watches immediately. Can't wait to spend the rest of my life listening and have it played at my funeral. There's something about the melody that elicits sadness, coming to an end, like an epilogue to The Next Generation I never had but wanted, and to life itself, but still manages to bring hope, joy, and complacency that time will continue on after I am gone. Thank you.
After listening to this song and watching every single episode of TNG, I have been able to pinpoint where each of these samples come from: “You know, back when I was in the academy.../Come cheer up, my lads”: S3 E18 “Allegiance” Klingon Victory Chant: S6 E16-17 “The Birthright (Parts 1 & 2)” Data singing Che Gelida Manina: S4 E25 “In Theory” “‘Tis better to have loved and lost.../When I have plucked the rose” and all other Shakespeare quotes: S3 E24 “Ménage à Troi” “1-7-3-4-6-7-3-2-1-4-7-6-Charlie…” S4 E3 “Brothers” “Completely unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic”: S6 E25 “Timescape” “Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship.../Tea, Earl Grey, Hot”: Ubiquitous throughout the series “That’s an interesting twist” S3 E11 “The Hunted”
This guy has an impeccable facial expressions of Data, and his acting is flawless. He could definitely play a younger version of Picard (Like his Academy days) if they ever make a prequel show
Gotta love the handiwork here... the lighting is perfect in every scene and really makes it look as if he is standing in a spaceship or on a planet surface...
You probably wont get this a lot, but this song has a lot of meaning for me. My good friend passed away a week ago, one of my final memories of him is him screaming "TIS BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST" over and over again on NYE while horrendously drunk, greatly annoying everyone. Now it's kind of become his anthem and its hard not to listen to this without thinking of him. Tis better to have loved and lost, indeed.
this gives me goosebumps. beautiful story, may his soul rest in peace. i love pogo and all of his songs give me a nice feelings. may i ask how he passed away?
Come to think of it, he does slightly resemble Q's son from that one episode of Voyager (played by Keegan De Lancie, the actual son of Q's actor, John De Lancie!).
It's crazy. I always had zero interest in Star Trek. This song literally made me watch the series. I'm about halfway through TNG after starting it officially about 2 months ago.
@@michaeljenner2325 absolutely!!! My favorite characters are Data and Geordie. Obviously Picard as well. I'm genuinely terrified of the Borg as I have a phobia of ETs and they are as cold and unfeeling as they can come. It freaks me out but I really like the rush.
How the heck did he manage to convincingly look like two different actors, using only a bit of makeup and contacts for one, and *nothing* for the other? Like, he's got Picard's and Data's mannerisms and facial expressions down so well. 1:00 basically IS a young Patrick Stewart! I mean, he must have had hair at _some_ point. Right?
I read the description of the video after a comment suggestin' some confabulous lyrical sources there, and found out a claim: *there were no contacts applied to eyes featuring in this video*. (Backstage) Details on the aforementioned description.
Sir Patrick Stewart started balding in his late teens and by 20 was to what we've seen him with. He's mentioned struggling with it initially, until he decided to just own it and the rest is history.
@@Just_Call_Me_Tim I believe were speaking about the character Jean-Luc Picard and not the actor. Yes, in his youth JLP has hair. There is an episode where he reverts to a child which has hair.
I have watched this 20 times. Today the youtube algorithm sent this to me. So I watched it 21 times now. Well done, pogo, the sound editing and video editing is first class.
A close friend of mine loved this song. He played it so often we all knew the (non) lyrics by heart. He passed away March, 2019. Unfortunately this anthem was not played at his funeral but it has since become my absolute JAM. R.I.P. Clark Strobel Edit:
From the things people have written about him, he sounds like a wonderful person. My condolences to you, and I hope his dog(s) is/are taken care of as well.
Fun fact: TNG was the most-watched Star Trek show, with a peak audience of 11.5 million during its fifth season prior to the launch of DS9. Between 1988 and 1992 it picked up half a million to a million additional viewers per year. This song has nearly become as popular!
Fun fact, they used to screen "big episodes" of TNG at a University here in Perth Western Australia back in the early 90's on a big screen. My dad would take me, I was 9 and my best memories ❤
His Data is scary good. He's got several of Spiner's facial expressions down. And I can't believe he had to re-color the uniform. It looks perfect and seamless. And also the lighting differences based on the background. Very well done indeed. I hope Spiner and Stewart have seen this.
That's part of the reason I have to WATCH this video. I can't not see his Data face. Especially the shot where he's half lit and peering into the light.
As someone who works in post production and has seen some very sloppy lighting/greenscreening footage by so called "professionals" your lighting technique is incredible. You backlit correctly and your coloured bounce light was on point. As far as compositing, it is very rare for me to see anyone do a near perfect job, but damn... you nailed it.. My only criticism , and believe me, this is nit picking at its highest, is slightly too much bloom on some of the "outdoor" shots. But seriously, that is REALLY nitpicking.. If one of my guys had run this past me for approval, I would have congratulated them.. But seeing as your not a pro, and did this at home, you sir are a freaking legend. Well done.
This kind of editing work is amazing and actually makes you wonder if this was done on the set. It's great. But beyond that. The mannerism's inflected. You ask me if that's Brent or Stewart... I'd say both. it's done so well. a masterpiece. Bravo. Mr "Pogo" and go for a CBS job on Star Trek if they let you into the US
I saw all the comments like “36th time listening” and laughed, but now I’m at that point and it’s on my Spotify playlist and I think I hear this song in my dreams. It’s haunting. I love it.
I KNOW RIGHT!!! I was like, this is weird.... nah, don't like. Next day at work, it's in my head... move forward 3 weeks and i am spamming my friends and work colleagues with it
As others have already praised the make up, lighting, green screen postprocessing and obviously the song itself, I would like to praise your acting skills. You are doing really good impersonation of Picard, despite the obvious physical appearance differences, and your Data is absolutely pheonamenal! I can't find words to describe how good it is for me. Head movements, eye movements, forehead, everything. Great job, thank you for that.
It is great. I noticed that Data's rank is wrong tho. He has 3 gold pips, instead of 2 gold and one black. Data is a Lt. Commander, not a Commander. Definitely a nitpick, but as a Trek fan I noticed and it bugs me. lol.
It's because Pogo wasn't able to get his hands on a gold Federation uniform for the video, so he shot his Data scenes in the Picard uniform and then color corrected it in post to be the appropriate mustardy-gold color.
@@daveemerson6549 But the Picard uniform in the video has four pips and the Data uniform has three... was he able to remove a gold pip but couldn't get a black one?
I wasn't having the best of days today. But when I got home and had a minute to finally relax, UA-cam thought I should watch this masterpiece again. I took it's suggestion and I honestly feel a lot better now lol
My husband and I used this as our "introduction" song at our wedding reception. As in, this is the song playing when the party got brought in and we were announced (again) as husband and wife and cut the cake. It was absolutely perfect, and maybe only three other people in the whole room knew what was going on.
Yellow Flash brought me here. He started playing it to begin his livestreams. I’m not even a Star Trek fan. Lol, yet l watch this at least once every other week.
I want to know if he really went to Star Trek Rock, or if he id video magic. Either way he got the lighting just exactly spot on. Both articistically and techically really quite amazing.
It's been a while since I last watched this, but here it is 7/21/2020 and I'm still coming back for more. I really really love this song. I just can't get enough of it!
This song is impressive on it's own. But, add your perfect mannerisms of both Picard and Data, your extraordinary lighting and chroma key and this video is a Dyson Sphere of talent!
I’ve never in my life read such a wholesome comment thread. I know nothing about Star Trek! I found this song thru crowder and instantly fell in love. Maybe I have to watch Star Trek to see the lighting and blooming issues but as far as I’m concerned this song is one of my favorites and the video is so precious
These characters are from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation. This series didn't have all the added lightning effects that the 2009 movie had, so it will be very easy on your eyes.
All the words sung are from episodes of Star Trek. The long number by Data is so well realised in this as are Picard's "hypnotic" words. Someone has done a Pogo tribute video where you can see the original scenes.
@Rogue Standards I don't think the old visuals were bad. I grew up in the 80s and 90s watching TNG. I wanted them to know that watching the old stuff is easier than the new lens flare style.
I honestly have no idea how many times I've watched this now...I blast this every time I have to wash the dishes...I think my wife is about to divorce me over it.
I just want to add to the comments saying that your acting is superb. You emulated the mannerisms and personality of both Picard and Data extremely well! The Data makeup and hair styling was done very well. And it was a very fun song!
Yep. Oddly it could be inferred that the reason Picard regarded Data as his surrogate "son" in the movies is because Data shares many traits with Picard particularly the inability to bond with others on the ship.
That's what really makes it for the video - the lighting is so spot on he looks like he's on the sets. Not to mention the fact that the Data uniform and eyes are all post work!
This video showed an EXPERT LEVEL of lighting matching and also parallax and angle. The vanishing point of the back sets matches the position of the actor and the focal length of the lens. BRAVO! I've had to do greenscreen matches myself and this is TOP LEVEL WORK! Excellent job!
This might be the best use of green screen I've ever seen. The matching of the lighting was perfect. The outdoor lighting was especially impressive, but it was all really well done. And it's even more amazing that you managed the yellow and eye transformations in post.
This is truly insane. The amount of work you put into this...especially the lighting. I've never seen anyone pull of lighting for green screen work perfectly....and changing your eyes and uniform to yellow in POST?! Geeze man. Talk about time and talent.
Every time I watch this I'm amazed at how he nails the atmospheric lighting to the scenes. It's perfect. The soft light from that famous photo of Stewart as Picard at 1:23, the various ship interiors, the extra sunlight of Varidian III matching "Generations", the bridge, the corridors....I keep coming back because he put so much care into this. It's simply perfect.
7 years?!? Seven years in beautiful bliss (actually there have been a bad few thrown in there).. or should that be a bad few la la ciaculdala? I don’t know but this work of art inspires me. Tea, Earl Grey, Hot. Much love internet peoples.
It's been said a million different ways already, but beyond the utterly addicting audio the visuals uncannily faithful to the show. The way Pogo's nods his head to communicate assurance as Data, or how he narrow's his eyes as Picard to express his guarded yet seeping passion is some top tier physical acting. And that's all without mentioning the superb lighting. It ranges from immaculately organic to climatically expressive. It's a one man artisan production all throughout.
Pretty sure this was the whole point of UA-cam right here.

My good friend passed away a week ago, one of my final memories of him is him screaming "TIS BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST" over and over again on NYE while horrendously drunk, greatly annoying everyone. that first season was nutty huh?
How the heck did he manage to convincingly look like two different actors, using only a bit of makeup and contacts for one, and *nothing* for the other? Like, he's got Picard's and Data's mannerisms and facial expressions down so well. 1:00 basically IS a young Patrick Stewart! I mean, he must have had hair at _some_ point. Right?
I read the description of the video after a comment suggestin' some confabulous lyrical sources there, and found out a claim: *there were no contacts applied to eyes featuring in this video*. (Backstage) Details on the aforementioned description.

@@wedchidnaok1150 Yeah, I guess if he did the yellow uniform in post production (the mad lad) then the same probably goes for the eyes.

Star Trek is Gene Roddenberry's best work. Star Trek died with him. Nobody else "gets it".
Genuinely a work of art, a sequel with Q would be amazing
His Data is scary good. He's got several of Spiner's facial expressions down. And I can't believe he had to re-color the uniform. It looks perfect and seamless. And also the lighting differences based on the background. Very well done indeed. I hope Spiner and Stewart have seen this.
That's part of the reason I have to WATCH this video. I can't not see his Data face. Especially the shot where he's half lit and peering into the light.
Data clearly.
If you look closely at the yellow uniform at 0:38 you can see red at the seam between the yellow and black. However, it still looks great. :)
3:01 it's unreal.
1:27 His gurning while he's dancing as Data is just scary, though.
Well done.
I was just admiring the lighting and comping too! Spot on!!!
It matches the star trek movies
I actually thought the outdoor lighting was fucking on point
This kind of editing work is amazing and actually makes you wonder if this was done on the set. It's great. But beyond that. The mannerism's inflected. You ask me if that's Brent or Stewart...

All the words sung are from episodes of Star Trek. The long number by Data is so well realised in this as are Picard's "hypnotic" words. Someone has done a Pogo tribute video where you can see the original scenes.

But he should have shaved his head bald.
