Spot has Data trained

- Star Trek TNG - Force of Nature, Data been trying to train his cat Spot to get down from his console with little success, but Geordi remarks that Data's training is coming along.
Spot first appeared in "Data's Day" as a male, long-haired Somali cat. In subsequent appearances, Spot was seen as a more common American short-hair orange tabby, but still as a male. It was only in the seventh season episode "Force of Nature" that Spot was first referred to as she. In "Genesis", she even gave birth.
Dogs have owners, cats have staff.
Dogs for the most part love you unconditionally. Cats are just seething pillows of ego and hatred
+Limelines wow, not mine, they show their love for us everyday.
Mine HATED my entire family XD
Hhahahaahah Clap Clap Clap XD
+ Limelines
Probably because you guys were offering it substandard service. Can't expect the masters to be happy with lazy, inattentive slaves!! Try harder next time!!
I just noticed something.
First time: Spot meows and Data feeds her.
Second time: Spot meows and Data gives her a toy.
Data's always responding appropriately to her every beck and meow. Sorry Data, but you've been trained. XD
That's what the writers planned.
I love how Data looks slightly embarrassed even though he's an android.
KoNP69 I always thought that Data not being able to have emotions never made any sense. His highly adaptive programming plus his knowledge of each and every philosophical, psychological, and otherwise text that has ever been written plus his own experiences should make him more than capable of experiencing emotions. I would think it would make more sense if Soong had put in some sort of block in his program to prevent emotions and the "emotion" chip was really just something to remove that block.
***** I always viewed it as him having been programmed for emotions, but lacking a complete coding, or had flawed coding for it. He can emote, but not in a self aware way, nor understanding of others in subtle ways. The emotion chip is like a software and hardware patch (not an upgrade) to remedy this.
Jmo I have always thought of data's emotions like a tree stump there but just barely: in all but empathy and compassion which I have always felt he had a lot of but did not realize it as such: it was like happiness without deep joy or deep passion, sad but not sorrow. he can miss a person but not really mourn the loss.he can want but not desire.
Here I am going on a TNG spree through youtube, I don't know what compels me to respond to these old comments.
I think it depends how you describe emotions.
He has designated goals that are dynamically set and expected results. He can still be puzzled or come to unexpected conclusions.
I believe most of his "emotions" are either just expressions to provide onlookers expected reactions to display as a social interaction or just him trying to process new information that doesn't quite make sense from a purely logical standpoint.
If we were to think of emotions logically I think you'll find that people often confuse their thoughts and feelings.
Fear and caution are great examples, You can have caution without fearing something but you can fear without caution.
You can fear something and become cautionary.
Some people fear chickens or be cautionary cooking.
Caution is therefore, more of a state of alertness rather than an emotional state.
Data doesn’t have to mimick breathing or blinking, but he does.
He doesn’t feel emotions (well, until the movies) but he knows what appropriate responses are to things. It’s all about his drive to be more human.
My orange tabby cat is named Spot. When Data said "down," he got off the bed.
Hope Spot is doing well now, 4 years later
I’ll take “things that didn’t happen” for 100 , alex
K K i have an orange tabby named spot, too :)) i cuddle him all the time! he's so chunky
must be nice. Mine just looks at me like I am speaking gibberish.
@@bigdog3628 You're not speaking gibberish, your cat is just not listening to you because all cats think humans are crazy and not worth listening to.
I love how Data says 'one moment' to Spot, he even shows etiquette to a cat. I don't think he's done enough reading on cats, doesn't understand them nearly as much as people.
Some people that are close to you and yes, pets are people very much so, they just don't heed or choose not to heed your collective noosphere (all the time). long story short they know what you mean, but choose to ingnore you
That, or he's just so polite that it extends to everyone.
I talk to my cat like that. It's a cat owner thing.
@@joethehero2 A cat owned thing.
I can't decide if that is Brent Spiner being Data, or Brent Spiner being Brent Spiner.
I love how he says "Up is no."
Everybody else gets the technobabble dump but Spot doesn't have time for that.
The word choice in that small statement was VERY relatable, even the android understands the fine struggles of cat ownership. 😂
"I have not been...entirely successful."
The delivery of that line _always_ gets me.
Shaking his head "yes" when he says is so funny.
haha yes! This whole scene is great
Cats were once worshiped as gods... They have never forgotten this
There's Beerus & Champa...
Nor have they forgotten the cruelty brought upon them by the Europeans during the dark ages. Maybe that’s why they knock things off shelves.
Cars are a nuisance , unreliable, and nearly untamable. I can think of no harm that would be caused if they were eradicated
@@justchris846 lol rats and mouse for one
@@justchris846 Yeah my car never sits. Just lays there on its wheels.
The part that always gets me is when the door chimes and he tells the cat "one moment".
"Up is no."
Up is no
Nods affirmingly: "I have... not been.. entirely successful!" Hee.
I loved that part. :D That look on his face.
I adore when he excuses himself to the cat: "One moment."
@1:47 Data feels emotions for the first time. He is embarrassed at being caught responding to his cat's commands more than the other way around
Look at that face and tell me I'm wrong
I know. Also at 0:12. That exhale sounds like annoyance or frustration to me. I am definitely part of the camp that believes that Data does feel emotions in some way or other but just doesn't realize it somehow.
Dont worry, it wasn't the first time...
I believe Data has emotions but has also learnt to emulate reactions based on the people he interacts with.
I think data has emotions but simply doesn't feel them as viscerally as a human would. after all emotions can just be a response to stimuli, and data certainly can process stimuli.
@@Isissa125 That does make sense
"I love cats. They're the epitome of indifference."
-Amy Farrah Fowler
yet they are not indifference.
quite complex
Agreed!
Data saying "It may be that Spot lacks the intelligence necessary to learn the appropriate responses to my commands."
Fast forward that to many years later in a convention Q&A:
Brent Spiner (commenting out of character): That cat, I have to say, was the stupidest actor I have ever worked with. Never took a piece of direction. Except one time. ONE time, and that's when they wrote in "Spot eats tuna....out of a can. Did it in one take."
I guess Data's assessment was true in that case.
Brent, and I think other cast members, have said that they hated when they’d read the scripts for episodes and see the name “Spot” in them. There would be an audible groan at table reads at the mention of the cat.
awww but she is one of my fave characters xD also i think Spot is rly smart but is a mean bitch.
Aww why hate Spot? Were there really that many scenes she made THAT difficult? Maybe don't write scenes where the obedience of a dog is necessary. Cats need a reason to do what YOU want them to do, she knows damn well she's not going to be compensated fairly
It sounds like the issue was motivation, not intelligence. The proper way to motivate a cat is don't bother trying.
@@MyoclonicJerkCough i think it was more like they wanted the cat to do things even a good trained cat couldn’t do. for example jump off the table for this line, jump on again after that. it just took a lot of time.
Happiness is being owned by a cat.
+Centipede They truly own us, we are there staff. "Cats don't have owners, they have staff."
I once saw a sign at a crafts fair, "Anyone who has owned a cat knows nobody 'owns' a cat."
I love the ending. The look on Data's face as he realises what Geordi means, and then throws the ball to the floor. LOL!!!!!
I love Brent Spiner, he is amazing!!
Spot's meow is cute :)
0:48 The closest that Data has come to frustration in the entire series, and it's hilarious!
you've not see him choking out a Borg
Data also sighs at 0:13 to 0:14.
Almost overloaded his positronic matrix.
Watch "Redemption II" when Data is a temporary captain of another ship. He shows some frustration in that episode.
The Borg don't have shit on cats. Cats don't need to use invasive surgery to make you obey them.
Me no listen you
"Down is good. Up is no."
Aww, I love how he talks to Spot as if she were a person.
"One moment."
LOL, so adorable!!!!!!!! X}
Haha it's the "one moment" that gets me
+Tomalak Geret'kal Hey, cats are to be treated with respect too. :)
Tigerman1138 Absolutely :)
I love Data and Spot. They make a great pair.
Lol
I'm glad that someone else made this observation. It was so....DATA!
"Up is no" omfg
0:20 the greatest exchange ever recorded in tv
Humans can not train cats, because cats are far too busy training humans.
Not true. I have trained my cat to come to me on command. I just open a can and He comes running.
Lukiel666 I say "cat get your fluffy toche in here" and she comes running, then bites me and runs away
My cats follow basic commands. "up, down, come, go away," with approximately a 90% success rate.
But I can take a shovel and smash a cat over the head and it cant do anything
If I ever meet Brent Spinner, I think I'm going to thank him for being willing to play a guy who loves cats and doing a good job.
Be sure to thank him for playing a hillbilly with extremely bad luck.
My tabby will go to the corner of my bookcase and sit looking into it. He has me visually trained. He will dig at the books if I take too long.
He is doing it right now. I am off to feed him.
Had a cat that used to sleep in my room. He was a wonderful hunter (kept our part of the neighborhood gopher-free). But he started very early in the morning, when I liked to sleep. He learned that I didn't like him jumping all over my furniture (with all the possibly-breakable knick-knacks) and that if he did, I'd immediately get up and open the door to the room to let him out.
Damn cat had me so well trained. :D
Oh man, that's great XD I love when he's like, "Hmm?" "..Hmm." And understands her. XD
What Geordi says about cats is so true! Great final line.
In a sense, dogs also have their humans trained. It's just that they seem to find it easy if we believe ourselves to be in control.
But cats, yeah they aren't going to put up with our delusions. Precious aren't they:-)?
Cats probably don't even know we think that they're in control, they probably just think "oh hi human can I have some food and cuddles...oh look a fly"
This is what I love about TNG. Geordi says something sarcastic and it goes right over Data's head, and we're all sitting here laughing.
00:48 sounds like my dating life
Same
"Down is good, up is NO."
"Geordi...I cannot stun my cat." LOL
This is such a hilarious clip! I'm new to TNG but already Data is my favorite. Maybe it's because he is so vulnerable to these amusing occurences...
Spot: "Meow."
Data: "Hmm?"
Spot: "Meow!"
Data: "Hm." (gets ball of string for demanding kitty)
I LOVE IT! xD
Nothing like getting trolled by a cat.
Gotta lovo how he says, 'one moment' to spot as if Spot would even care
Oh Data. That look on his face at the end *kills* me.
Cute! Data is a sweetie and he is cute, especially with his kitty.
Love how he talks to Spot.
After the two leave Spot smiles and straightens her belly fur with her front paws. 'Meow it so, Meowster Data.'
The way he says “one moment” to spot before he answers the door, lmao
Brent hated that damn cat. He said Spot only followed direction once; "Spot eats a can of tuna."
what does he expect, cats arnt known to follow directions like dogs. He couldve gotten a maine coone instead.
he didn't really hate that cat, he said several times. he just said that cat was the worst actor hes ever worked with. he says "i love all of god's creatures" (so precious)
The key to training a cat is to star from kittenhood. Its too late for spot.
Actually you can train older cats, i did it myself, but it IS significantly harder
He did a great job of mimicking an annoyed facial expression at the end of this clip.
Data: "Down is good. Up is no."
Spot: "You underestimate my power! "
No spot, don't try it!
We are CAT... Resistance is...FUTILE!
I love that sheepish look Data gives right before he walks out. :'D
For someone who apparently doesn’t have emotion, Data looks pretty embarrassed.
I love when he tells the cat "one moment". That's just such a spot on (no pun intended) character moment for Data.
It's all in the tone, Data.
those power conversion metrics aren't going to calibrate themselves data!
+MrFiddleedee "I know, I have taken on Spot as a student. Her keen perception and ability to see well in the dark will allow her to operate whether or not main lighting is operable."
"one moment..." xD
“I had not been entirely successful”
I like Data so much, I think that’s thanks because of Detroit: become human.
"Hey, man. You threw the stick, you go and get it yourself, I'm busy. If you wanted the stick so bad, why'd you throw it away in the first place?"
i have super vague memories from childhood thinking he was the gentlest, most awesome dude ever. and he's fully functional ;0
Even Commander "I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations" Data says things like "Up is NO" when confronted by a kitty.
"...this is up. up is no." I love that
I didn't really put forth a training effort on my cat, but I do believe over time he understood what I said. Often he'd block the door, I'd say "Move back" and he'd move. He lived to be 23.
And then in the end, Spot saved Data's life.
"One moment."
Data understands Catanezze
Figured out why Spot wouldn't get down. Everyone knows Supplement 25 is Spot's favorite. Spot was protesting.
Oh little Spot is so adorable!
People think dogs are smart because they do what we say, I think cats are smart because they refuse to do anything we say.
My cat has me well trained. She just told me to go to bed, so...good night.
I can definitely relate to Data in this video :-) I just got my very first kitten last week, and the more time I spend training him, the more I think he is training me. He wakes me up at 7, and I know he wants his food; he just looks at me, and I know to move over on the couch for him...these are just a few of the recent occurrences, lol.
i hope your cat is still doing well! they must be senior now!
@junkerburn2341 Thank you for kind note- it made my day :-). My boy is a senior, and he is just as special as he was 12 years ago. He now knows words like "fresh". If he gets to his morning water dish before I can get to him, I'll say "fresh" and he'll stop drinking and let me take his bowl then give him fresh water and he'll wait then resume drinking when I place it down and same goes with his hard food.
@@ZekeTheDCCat thats awesome! what a smart boy. one of my cats looves a fresh bowl of water, hell hog the water bowl when we refill it for the dog after a walk for almost a minute (he also had a phase where hed eat the dog's food too), then hell steal water from the rabbit too. .....then when we had the christmas tree up he also drank from there too.
hes not diabetic or anything btw, just really likes his water bowls.
@junkerburn2341 Haha too funny! Cat likes the dog food because it is high in protein ;-). My mom's cat drinks out of a dog sized water bowl, and my cat drinks out of Asian noodle bowl I got at an Asian grocery store. Our cats are smart; I should follow their lead and drink more water.
If the rumors are true Brent Spiner's look of exasperation was not an act. It's known that he's not a cat person.
No, he mentioned at a panel that he "doesn't mind cats, but THAT cat..."
Like every cat owner, soon Data will be well trained.
Two words - water spray ; )
I remember when i first saw this episode i laughed so hard at Geordy's line. Classic!
0:48 Funniest Data line ever, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
A few years ago I saved this cat's life by taking it in, saving it from a hateful divorcing couple. Cat was stressing so bad she was chewing the fur off her body. Do you think that cat even thanked me. No. It just moved into my bed and stole my husband. They sleep curled up together ever since, from that day to this. LOL. Actually she is a daring, sweet as can be. But she rarely comes up to me. But damn she loves my hubby.
As they say a dog guards, a cat watches, and judges XD
I too am fond of the wisdom of Salem Saberhagen.
the opposite of good is bad, therefore it should be "this is down; down is good. This us up; up is bad" But, data didn't want to use the word bad in association with spot, so he said, "this is down; down is good. This is up, up is no". A very subtle way the writers showed that Data had feelings for the cat.
With all of the knowledge Data has he should have known cats love being in higher places to look down upon the world and others. They feel safe and comfortable in higher places.
I give it a pass because the scene provided a greater point about cat owners and how we care for them.
Nobody ever realizes they're being trained by their cat until aomeone else points it out to them.
Silly Data….Cat's ALWAYS train their owners, believe me I know.
It is funny how the cat meows and Data grabs the string and starts playing with Spot. It's true, the cat was the true teacher and Data was being schooled in "Ownership 101".
That cat doesn't lack intelligence; it just doesn't care.
When I originally saw this back in 1993-94, after Data said "Down is good", I thought he was going to say "Up is bad."
What Data failed to realize, when you have a cat, you don’t own the cat, the cat owns you
In Soviet Star Trek, cat trains YOU!
+Observer29830 That was good!
Cat is already training him
It was a great call giving Data a cat instead of a dog.
1:27 Actually, it's that cats are so smart they act stupid in order to get what they want. Poor Data doesn't understand the ways of the cat. So adorable!
I laughed hard when the door chimes and he tells Spot "one moment"
Indeed, my friend!!! They never do it as they used to! Star Trek TOS and TNG were the golden ages!!!
All cats have the intelligence level to be trained. They just can't be bothered with it.
I wish Data were real XD i'd love to meet him! LOL he's so CUTE
What happen to Spot after Generations? Did Data leave a will stating who will care for Spot? Barclay and Spot had a relationship. Or is B4 her new owner?
Well it was actually Nemisis, but I dunno.... I haven't seen it yet....
It won't be Worf that's for sure *Damar laugh*
@@TheWPhilosopher :I WILL FEED HIM second best Worf line after "I am NOT a merry man"
@@anthonyreed3682 I don't know. I liked "I know many things" though it could be the way Dax makes oo eyes at him.
In a VOY episode, Barclay had a cat on Earth which was not even close to being Spot.
Pets so often get forgotten by writers in the continuity. What happened to Tiger in The Brady Bunch? Or Cindy's cat from the pilot episode? Or William, Ernie's dog, in My Three Sons? Or the dog (forget his name) from the first season of King of Queens? That last one made one appearance in Season 2, but nothing more. And Speedy in The Drew Carey Show only appeared when the plot called for him, and as with Spot, caring for him rarely if ever really featured in a given story.
Such a shame.
I love cats so much. The idea of giving Data a cat was great. It's better than a Dog too because Dogs actually do follow instructions so he would have been able to train it but Cats just don't care and do whatever they want anyway which is funny to see an android try to deal with.
SUCH A CUTIE 🖤
"I have not been entirely successful", has been my default response to whenever i haven't finished a task, for the last 25 years.
Oh your cat is named Spot, that's awesome. Mine is called Cuteness of Borg.
anyone who has tried to train a cat knowsthis feeling
they train you
That moment when your pet behaves exactly like this...
...but you have a dog.
Data: "It may be that Spot lacks the intelligence necessary to learn the appropriate responses to my commands."
But smart enough to train an android with a positronic brain to respond accurately to a meow, and without the android realizing it.
1:47
Data looked so bummed out to hear that from Geordy 😂
My cats make sure I get up and ready for work by forcing me out of bed so they can have my bed to themselves lol
We don't own cats, cats own us.
When I come home my dogs are like going crazy and all happy to see me. My cat is like, Oh its you. 🙄 Yawns and then walks away going about her own thing.
Cats and dogs, living together. Mass hysteria!
Data's bond with Spot is the cutest frigging thing.
