Every "human" thing Data attempts is supposed to look like a caricature of itself. It's the comical edge to his character and his never-ending quest for humanity. He's just too fundamentally different to smoothly and effortlessly human.
I don't know in this episode I was kind of amused as a kid by the cake stuff but was more freaked when Data attacked Troi in the Elevator. The Idea that Worf eats cake let alone talks with his mouth full of mint frosting was just funny to my brother and Me.
There was a planned episode which never got filmed, that would've been even more absurd. Riker would stand next to a wall and hit it with a loaf of bread all day, because that is his "job". At some point, the TNG crew would figure out that what they are doing is kind of absurd and that reality was tempered with... because Q had gone mentally insane and his crazyness transformed the reality and made it equally "broken".
I remember being a kid, not familiar with Star Trek at all, turning the show on and it happened to be this episode. Years later, in a College class on Psychoanalysis and Science Fiction, this was the first show watched and it seemed familiar, then it got to this part and I said "IT'S THE CAKE EPISODE!!"
I can only wonder, what was the baker thinking when the set designers called him and said, "So yeah, we're commissioning a cake in the shape of a human torso, and frosted to look like a science officer's uniform."
Seeing this episode as a child in the early 90's bugged me out. Still, I can remember sitting there compelled and gripped by its awkward/weird inducing nature and I still come back here today to watch this scene. I see it had the same kinda effect on other ppl here as a child . That's weird too! Love ittt!
I remember watching this episode as a kid and it creeped me out. Even Geordi's "This oughta be a lot of fun!" was quite ominous. But when Worf spoke with his mouthful of cake, "With mint frosting!", I laughed out loud and made everything okay. Not from this clip, after.
I'm going to go see Troi, Crusher and Worf at Comicon in Portland Oregon on September 7-9th 2018. I am trying to line up a wedding cake bakery to make a replica of this cake, except this time it will be Riker is the cake because he was supposed to attend Comicon but isn't. And I hope they can make his head too. I will present to Marina Sirtis I think.
I have seen this episode 5 times. Every SINGLE time, I tune in just after the opening scene!! Later, when Data is discussing his nightmare with Geordi in Engineering, he ends his conversation with: "... after I woke up, for a moment I...". YOU WHAT?!?! WHAT DID I MISS??? Aaaaarrrrgh!!
I relate to Data. I tend to have dreams like this. Unrealistic, bizarre. The only difference is I'm usually other people. A variety of people. With their own thoughts, desires, histories and behavior. In the dreams I have entire lifetimes of memories I can recall to. I am almost never myself. It's strange to me, almost like I'm hopping to another life in another dimension rather than my own creation. Some are outside of the scope of something I'd even imagine.
I've wondered about something for years when it comes to this episode. At the end, Troi brings over a Data Cake for her and Data to eat, but we never actually see him eating any. Did they ever bring up whether or not Data could ingest food?
Yes. In the episode: "Deja Q"... Q: I've never eaten before. What do I ask for? DATA: The choice of meal is determined by individual taste. Q: What do you like? DATA: Although I do not require sustenance, I occasionally ingest semi-organic nutrient suspension in a silicon-based liquid medium. Q: Is it good? DATA: It would be more accurate to say it is good for me, as it lubricates my bio-functions. Q: It doesn't sound very appealing. What else is there?
This episode aired when I was a kid, I had mono at the time n had a terrible fever I’m old now but still remember those fever dreams I had of data cutting Diana up n waking up crying Not the only Star Trek episode that gave me nightmares either Schisms creeped me out pretty bad too
A case of Next Gen trying to have its cake and eat it at the same (literally in one case), Phantasms ends up with some potentially disturbing psychological horror being watered down in favour of some nonsense about invisible parasites from the new warp core. Whilst it makes sense for Data to be the central figure in this tale, both he and the other cast members look bored most of the time and some attempts at incorpoating Freudian theory just fall flat causing us to become as bored as the cast. The Troi cake and the shocking follow up to it are probably the only memorable moments.
LOL, I've just LOL' d out loud, Watched this clip, I have an Alexa in the computer room with the trigger word set to "Computer" (for obvious reasons!), and some LED lights on a wifi controller... guess what happened!
Worf savoring the cake so passionately is probably Data's subconscious picking up on Worf's attraction to Troi.
Wow... nice.
And Riker can do nothing but sit and watch as Worf eats Troi's cake. Man this is really freudian.
@@SejhaIsHere gold
@@SejhaIsHere Crusher is sucking out Riker's brain, so Riker probably doesn't even understand what Worf is doing
That scene makes me laugh! LOL!
Data's pre-bed rituals just crack me up, especially the way he fluffs the pillow and does that obviously fake yawn.
its supposed to look fake right?
Every "human" thing Data attempts is supposed to look like a caricature of itself. It's the comical edge to his character and his never-ending quest for humanity. He's just too fundamentally different to smoothly and effortlessly human.
Sleeping in one's uniform is not good behavior. At least Data does not sweat.
I would love to have a talking cake which is as nice as Deanna.
He's really trying!!
Also shooing the cat off of the bed.
This episode freaked me out as a kid, seeing Troi's actual head and then a cake body. That and Crusher drinking from Riker's head.
I don't know in this episode I was kind of amused as a kid by the cake stuff but was more freaked when Data attacked Troi in the Elevator. The Idea that Worf eats cake let alone talks with his mouth full of mint frosting was just funny to my brother and Me.
No.
@doctorwho0077 he was correct. The object pronoun "me" is always used after a preposition like "to."
You should check out the music video for Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More", they do something similar.
I'm 26 going to be 27 soon and this freaked me out.
The ringing was an Android phone, which had unlimited Data...
I mean, we've all seen the meme, but someone had to comment the joke anyway

I'd love to see that too. Do you have a source for that info?
That would have been a cool episode to see.
Where did you hear this?
@@stu1701E There's a bit about it on Memory Alpha, on the undeveloped TNG episodes page.

Star trek is a science horror show after all
I'd love a slice of cellular peptide cake right about now. With mint frosting, of course.
the recipe is in a book called the geeky chef follow the link www.geekychef.com/2012/04/cellular-peptide-cake-with-mint.html enjoy
Marina Sirtis did some pretty insane nude scenes back before Trek. Def. worth investigating.

Same thing happened to me with Steven universe. Let's just say that giant multicolored space women can look pretty strange if your not used to it.
with mint frosting. a warrior's cake.
I just showed this scene to my girlfriend, who’d never seen any Star Trek. The results were interesting. 😆
Poor girl! 😁
I can only wonder, what was the baker thinking when the set designers called him and said, "So yeah, we're commissioning a cake in the shape of a human torso, and frosted to look like a science officer's uniform."
I also wonder how the cake actually tasted to all who ate it.
Jeffrey Dahmer: "It was OK. Nothing special"
Plot twist: Baker is a TNG fan - refuses to bake such a cake - court case ensues.
"Let me get this straight, you want me to bake a cake in shape of a human torso with frosting to look a TNG science officer uniform?" - confused baker
This was where this show really shined. Warped realities and madness.
Mr Worf saying cellular peptide cake is pure comedy gold
Worf knows the chemical composition of the cake because he is a graduate of starfleet academy. Thus, he knows many things
Man, Data had some weird dreams.
I wonder if there was a flash of " Ancestral memory" as he cut the cake?(0:42) ua-cam.com/video/1MjLiRiCYVs/v-deo.html

Data has nothing on Tony Soprano.
@@dangeary2134 You've dreamed of your friends sucking each other's brains out with a straw?
Hilarious scene with Worf chewing a mouthful of cake and saying at the same time-- "with mint frosting".
I keep thinking about this scene every time I take a Biology class and the word "polypeptide" is mentioned.
Wow, Data must have one hell of a graphics processor to be able to dream in that much detail.
Android masterrace!
well he must have been given the same ability to dream as humans?
Except that it doesn't need to he as powerful as you said it needed to be. It is clear that only one scene is rendered at a time.
John Nathaniel's Alt Account only what you're looking at renders
With all this shit going on.. all I can think is "damn I wish I could make myself fall asleep that fast"

Well...Someone's been taking acid.
Did Data's batteries start leaking? 'Cause he's tripping on some kind of acid!
Data on acid... 8D
truly one of the weirdest TNG epis ever. Nonetheless I loved it.
What's weird about Worlf literally eating part of Troi, and Dr Crusher drinking Riker's brain out through a straw?
So if science officers are mint-frosted, what flavours are command and engineering personnel, I wonder?
I could imagine that the command personnel is either strawberry- or cherry-frosted and that the engineering personnel is banana- or lemon-frosted. :D
I don't know but Riker would definitely be a fruitcake.
+FekLeyrTarg's Videos 1:45 It looks like Riker's brains are made from strawberries. o_o
I choose to believe Command officers are cinnamon.
@doctorwho0077 lemon marang for engineers? :)

So, were you able to present the cake to them? Did they like it?
When I saw this I was so young that I think I spent some time wondering if I'd imagined it. It was just so strange.
Data is one of the best and funniest characters😍💕
DATA: Worf, do you want a piece of cake?
WORF: Yes, but I do not want that piece. I want a corner piece.
My dad and I would crack each other off at family dinners whenever they served cake by taking a bite and murmuring "With mint frosting" at each other.

I like how he didn't pick up Spot and moved her to a different comfy place so he just pushed her off with his foot
I was always disappointed that Data didn't wear jammies...and maybe a sleeping cap lol
This scene still lives rent free in my head. I would very much like to eat Troi as a cake, in some wierd freudian way. Mint. mmmmm.
