  • In this video we try to answer the question does the E38 BMW 740IL live up to the hype. We''ll tell you about the E38 BMW 740IL and share our thoughts on if its as special as everyone says it is.
The E38 generation of the 7 series started production in 1994 and lasted through 2001. The 740IL we're reviewing in this video is from the 2000 model year. In 2000, the E38 7 series received a facelift that swapped out the headlights and taillights and bumped up the torque due to changes to the M62 engine
Speaking of the M62 found in this 740IL, it was tuned several times since its existance and ended up in several different BMW models, including the very popular 540I. Separately the M62 had a sportier version, the S62 which ended up in the E39 BMW M5. The M62 in the 740IL is a silky smooth V8 powerplant that takes you down the road effortlessly and provides a pleasant driving experience.
The interior of the E38 BMW 740IL is a very nice place to be. Its hard to believe that its a 20 year old car as its design is very simple and timeless. One of the items that caught be surprise is how comfortable the 740IL really is. The seats have a very large number of adjustments available.
This E38 740IL is a long wheelbase version which means it is 5.5 inches longer versus the 740I model. That means the rear passengers have more room to stretch out and get comfortable. The rear seats in the bmw 740IL are extremely comfortable and have a lot of storage room.
Overall, does the e38 bmw 740IL live up to the hype, tune in to find out. Thanks for watching this video of the e38 740IL.

Yeah, well-said: with the E38 you get about 70% or 80% of the experience of a new 7-series - and on top of that you will have about 2000% of its style.

Couple of comments. My parents had an E38 740iL in the 90s and to this day, it's probably my favorite car, and I am a BMW owner today, myself. It was just the height of 90s executive luxury.
The recirculting looking button the steering wheel is a "Resume" function for the cruise control.
The seatbelts in the rear wear reached from the inside direction of the vehicle for two reasons. One was safety; in an accident if the emergency services needed to get you out of the car, they can pop the buckle right by the door or cut the belt near the buckle. One wonders why that design isn't still in use as it's really logical. Additionally, it was viewed as more elegant, when exiting the vehicle when being chauffeured to be able to unbuckle and have the belt pull away from the door, allowing someone to turn and exit, without the buckle and belt being in the way or catching the shoulder. Once you popped the buckle, the belt pulled away and allowed you to elegantly depart.

French E38 735i owner here. My model is a november 99 registered car and I really love it. Paint is dark blue, Black leather, comfort seats. Same 16" rims as the V12 version. I bought it in 2012 for a puny €2700 with 128K miles on the odometer. It has its share of issues, but it runs very smoothly, albeit not as vigorously as with the larger engine. Having a V8 in Europe is becoming very rare, which helps me enjoy my 7 more and more as the years go on. I never tire of looking at its timeless body lines. Thank you for this great enthusiast video.

The button on steering wheel in question is for switching the AC to recirculation mode and vice versa. In a more luxurious (and cold climate...) versions this button is replaced with a heated steering wheel switch.
This looks like a very nice E38 but to be honest it looks a little basic which is a suprise for iL versions of later production years. No 16:9 screen, no heated seats and no steering wheel heater (probably this car is a warm climate version...), no folding mirrors, no hydraulic trunk, no parking sensors to name just a few. Even the transmission is automatic and not steptronic which is also weird for a 2000 7 series.
One interesting fact: EU version E38 has a small glove compartment below parking brake release handle which was not available on US version 7 series.

The E38 is special to me because my dad owned a 97 740i for many years and it was basically the car i learned to drive on. The Sport package really makes the car a lot more dynamic and those M parallel wheels are one of the best wheel designs of all time. I also prefer the look of the short wheel base to the long wheel base. The dimensions and roof line were just right.

At the end of the day, they are both hydraulic. While it does feel better than electric p/s, I have a Toyota Yaris with electric p/s and I don't ever have to worry about it springing a leak!

I like the content of the video but I have one comment regarding the title. E38 is a mass produced car, it's not an exotic, niche product where it became a cult idol struggling through years of obscurity. Everyone since the mid 90s knew this was a great car, either they owned it or knew someone who owned it or they watched/read the reviews of this car back in the day. There is no "hype" surrounding this car, it's just a great car, it has lived up to the expectations since day one (well except the engine block lining issues which got fixed in later revisions). That being said, you just got a new subscriber.

They also had electronic suspension back then. Some had a TV in the back as well as a phone, power rear seat that was also heated. They also had automatic dimming side mirrors that were heated as well. The headlights automatically adjust when you first start it and while you're driving. If you ever drive across the country, that's a handy feature to have. I've driven mine through a blizzard at night and while I was at the edge of my seat, the car felt as if it wasn't even snowing. They also had voice commands back then... Plus if you hold the unlock button on the remote, it opens the roof and all of the windows. The lock button closes them. You can also do this with the key in the door.
The speed is governed at 155mph, but if you remove that, it'll do about 180mph if I remember correctly. Also, on my first trip across the country with a car full of stuff (about 600lbs) I averaged 28mpg until I started doing about 80mph, then I got about 24mpg... To change the oil myself is just over $80. One headlight bulb is about $100... Other than that, parts are pretty inexpensive.

It's strange that someone orders a long wheelbase car but leaves out all the goodies on the back.
I have an 735i short wheelbase E38 but it has electric/heated rear seats, separate climate control for the rear and a second, wireless phone in the rear armrest. I would rather expect all this in an iL version.

Does the E38 meet the hype? Absolutely damn right it does. I had a '97 735i. Only thing that I could fault it on was the shape & depth of the boot/trunk, useless unless you bought luggage to suit. The E53 X5 with the back seats up was much better. 34mpg on a touring trip, but

On the back seat, in the middle, above the arm rest that lays down where there looks like there should be a head rest, there is a secret compartment. Lift it open from the back side and it opens up. I had my car for months and never seen it until I was cleaning the back window and my elbow accidentally opened it.

I’m looking at a 2000 740il. The mileage is under 100k and I’m taking it to a bmw dealership tomorrow 5/28/20 for a pre-purchase inspection (is it a good idea to take it to a bmw dealership instead of a local bmw shop?) I’m super worried that the milage was messed up. It’s not the main reason why I worry but the pixel screen is going bad already. I appreciate any advice thrown my way. Oh btw, I never owned a bmw but always wanted a good reliable 7 series. Possibly daily. If I could afford it. Thanks I’m advance people. And great video!

its always a good idea to take a car to have a pre purchase inspection done regardless of who does it. The pixel screen is just a result of age. Most of them suffer from that. Good luck in your search and thanks for watching!

By swapping only two components, doing an easy firmware update , and buying one nav DVD, you can bring the nav system up to 2015 standards. Still not as good as Google Maps on an iPhone though.

Buy a newer Nav unit off eBay, say from a 2005 BMW X5 or similar year. Important: get the Nav unit with the DVD logo. You can also buy a Nav disk and a firmware update disk on eBay. Everything is easy to DIY, plug and play.
Also important: Be sure to connect the Nav coaxial cable to the back of the new Nav unit. You may have to relocate it from the Trimble.

Having ran two of these , both with impeccable main dealer history and until the electronic gugs set in with a vengeance they were nice cars although annoying poor quality trim in places like the drivers seat base that continualy kept coming adrift on both cars , dashboard digital figures corrupted and in time unuseable gave me decent motoring for 4 years . both cars had reached 150k and then the electronic unfixable bugs rendered the cars dangerous to use . Both were scrapped and I replaced them with an imaculate Japanese imported series 3 V12 Daimler and now I wonder why I ever bothered with BMW as the Daimler/Jaguar is motoring perfection in a different league to what the 7 series can only dream of
