The 2001 BMW 750iL is a special car -- and I think it's the most beautiful luxury sedan ever. Today I'm reviewing the 2001 BMW 7 Series to show you why I think the E38 7 Series is such a great car.

the turn signals feel so solid cause they were never used
Lmao
In America you don't do roundabouts and barely do corners... In Europe and GB especially we're all about roundabouts - turn signals and Spaghetti Junction - Gravelly Hill Interchange, better known throughout the UK by its nickname Spaghetti Junction, is junction 6 of the M6 motorway where it meets the A38(M) Aston

iversonloco Not true, I have a 95 740i with 298k miles. The turn signal would not cancel on left turn. Still felt like new when turning it on, but it would not cancel. Took the switch out and it was heavily worn, still felt solid but was worn and barely catching on the clock spring.
Bmw drivers just change lanes, they don't waste time with turn signals.
Perfect 7 series, low beltline, slim, solid and athletic. Unlike the new one
that g11 lci is just a grill with a 7 attached

I drive my 1998 740IL every day. 230,000 miles . I used to work on them for a living when they were brand new at the dealer. They looked awesome then and they still do today. Everywhere I go people talk about this car ….do you want to sell it ….I like your car….. a thumbs up at the gas station. There are some things created that will never happen again and this is one of them. All the stars were aligned.
yessir, you are one lucky man. Probably last you alot longer too!
I saw one for sales in the UK about 11 years ago, 750 V12 about 100k on the clock, it was owned by an old guy living in this massive stately mansion not far from me, 1 owner full BMW service history, completely speced out he only wanted £1250. its the only car i've ever regretted not buying, but I was working as a car salesmen living it home saving up to move out.
Gonna pick up one for 3000$ on Friday, transmission got replaced in 2017 and has 20k mikes on the new trans

Most elegant BMW ever. A good design goes never out of style.
I believe it’s the best 7 series ever my father had the 728i and at the same time he had an E46 318i and also a clk 320 but i remember him saying the 7 series was so good he only sold it because of how much it drank. At the end he sold them all except the e46 and after 10 years of owning it a drink driver hit him. Was the end of that. Now I have an e46 318ci and I’ll never sell it. Best bmw ever I believe is the E46
@@kouroshtashvishi5031 yeah i have a 2007 328xi i love it
Absolutely true. The successor's style definitely was crap. I saw it on the 2001 IAA, it has never become beautiful.
Big Danny Smokez will never sell the 318ci never. I’m getting another cat next month but still keeping this 318ci

its amazing how in 2001 bmws were 98% car, 2% grill
now in 2020 its 30% car, 70% grill...
I'm so over these cartoony grills.

This video is one of the most viewed videos made by Doug. I'm glad that people still have a good taste in car design and in cars general. I believe that the E38 was one of the best if not the best model that BMW ever produced and I consider myself lucky to have a neighbor that owns one of them. I always find some time to stare at this beauty...
For me, the BMW E34, E38 and E39 models are the most elegant and beautiful looking things mankind has ever designed.
I was born in the same year as this car and I feel like when I finally get rid of my 2016 for this car I am really gonna have a connection to it. I just know it's gonna be great.
My mom drove a 740iL like this one when I was a kid, and it was my favorite car my family ever owned. As a child, I could stick my legs straight out and not touch the back of the front seats. I felt like I was getting chauffeured and loved that car.
My dad also had a 1998 740IL when I was in elementary school. I wasn’t aware enough to know what it was, I just knew it was very nice. Felt like a tank. Will always remember those rear long pop out storage compartments.
Everything that came after this was lower quality.
Your dad must've been one of them titans of industry Doug keeps referring to. 😂

The "seat massager" was really for when you drive on long trips, it would change the pressure points on your legs etc so you don't get blood clots or driver fatigue. You can drive fo 10 hours and get out feeling pretty good.
@Cuthbert Bracegirdle About what? It didn't massage, it slowly changed the pressure points in your legs and it worked great. I put many miles on one.
Ask my father, he had a E32 750iL (predecessor) and we went all the way from Germany to Croatia for summer holidays in this car. We only ever stopped to take a piss.
@@LeBoomStudios I had a E38 740IL and I could drive for 17 hours just stopping for gas, food and to pee and I didn't feel all beat up when I got there. LOVED that car.
@Cuthbert Bracegirdle agree all these people lying I would take new one over this shit any day these people all liars they all say so beautiful but if they had money no one would buy this everyone would buy new one most these people just want to be cool and act like they are car geniuses that’s all it is they wanna be these car smart people
@@evansmemo for all the money we enthusiasts put into such cars, we could buy newer ones easily. They just lack the charme and style of the older ones. I got a new 5 Series G30 530i and an e38 as a hobby. The e38 is more pleasant to drive.
I really appreciate it when you do these 10+ year old cars. I'm not a BMW guy, but these 7-Series cars were fantastic.
Same here not a fan of bmw but this was looks elegant
You really appreciate it?
Oh, I cannot forget seeing E38 for the first time back in the 90s. There was a black one parked outside of a mall. Back then, just a BMW was very rare in my area. Seeing the 7 series in person was sensational. The front light tilted forward looked exotic, and the whole car looked sturdier and classier than any other car I had seen. Why can't BMW design like this anymore?
Chinese market.
@@Mapollo95 good comment 100 percent correct
Back in 2000 when I was 10 I saw an E46 M3 and it was the best looking and sounding car I’ve ever seen making it my dream car. In 2015 I bought my dream car.

what engine does it have
The rear seatbelts latch near the doors to make it easy for parents to put seatbelts on children or children's car seats. It was a godsend! My E36 5-Series worked that way too.
Those are not massaging seats, they are "active comfort seats," which are designed to make subtle movements to the seat bottom to reduce back fatigue on long trips.
I love how adding magnetic rear compartments and a warning triangle was “too expensive” but the hydraulic glove box seems reasonable 🥴
Big douggie Doug with the inconsistency
it was not too expensive it was unnecessary for Americans since they don't know what it is. It's like adding an manual in French for cars in USA.

This car just screams German Engineering
@BC J this gen of BMW is arguably the greatest era of any car brand ever. However personally I think the Bangle era has aged better like when the E60 5 Series was introduced everyone thought it was ugly but now it looks so good and still so modern and it’s design has pretty much become the design base of all modern sedans.

Yea, it's pretty unreliable
@@placeholdername3206 No idea why, those are probably best looking BMWs of all time unlike the predecessors - most bland and boring BMW desings of all, this and series 5.
I still remember reading a Car and Driver magazine’s reader’s response to the review of this car that read like this…”No matter how much I sweat and toil, I still can’t afford a BMW 750 IL”. Never forgot that little limerick.
This car truly makes Doug happy, you can tell by the way it makes him naturally smile while he is driving.
Guy: hey what cellphone do you have?
Other guy: BMW
James Bond drove one in Tomorrow Never Dies. I loved that car.
Hell yeah! That was my first thought when I saw this review. James Bond drove it with his cell phone. I'll never forget how the BMW logo could pop up on the hood and had a cable cutter. That was the funniest feature of that car. Of course there happened to be a cable in that garage that just happened to be exactly at the right height for his hood ornament cable cutter.
I love James Bond movies. I always felt Pierce Brosnan was my favorite James Bond. I saw that movie in theaters at around age 12 and it was my favorite movie for about a year.
And Transporter
Tupac was shot and died 6 days later in this exact vehicle
Michael Douglas drove one in one of his films. He then bought one. (Not sure if it was an L)
Not quite the same thing but for a few years when I was younger, my mom had a 5 series of the same vintage (1999 or 2000, I believe) and I always loved that car. I wanted to learn to drive in it back when I was like, 12.
My dad once took me out on the highway when we first got it and just floored it when there was nobody around, doing 120 or 130 down the open, empty roads late at night, giggling all the way while I was planted in my seat.
They sold it to some guy who just wanted the wheels off of it cause it had some sport package or something, and NOW, with me having been through therapy and prepping myself to work for the first time a lot later than I should have, I am considering one of those, or one of these, since they seem pretty attainable at a price of 3 to 6 thousand dollars. I'm honestly pretty hyped for it.
Wait 6 THOUSAND ONLY? Damn thats cheap as it gets, what is the minimum wage in your country?
@@joaopaulogalloclaudino9671 I live in Florida right now and the minimum wage is about $12/hr, but it's slowly going up. Working full time and saving aggressively it'd take me maybe 6 months to have that much.

The boot lid can be opened from inside, from the key, and optionally could be fitted with a self-lift function.
Over here in the UK, most examples are low spec and 728i, but even then, they're still a nice place to be.
Looking at the tyre pressure sticker, I actually wonder if the 728 is a little rear-heavy, with the larger engines having more central balance.
Will add, the heated front screen is handy too.
Absolutely perfect optics. I hope that BMW will return to this design soon.
Doug is the type of guy who USES turn indicators on his BMW

Dayum that turn signal lever is T H I C C
JMRSplatt can’t miss it. But somehow people still do
They've engineered those turnsignal stalk to last a billion cycles of use.....but why would they...since their drivers never use them?!
I once owned a 99 750i in Cosmos black, and I adored it. Double glazing, rain sensitive wipers, auto-tilt rear view mirror, heated wing mirrors, television, front and rear phones, memory seats, and tiptronic gear select.
The steering wheel moved out of the way, and the seat moved back, to let you enter gracefully. The power was endless, and for the time, the kickdown was awesome. I could drive hundreds of miles and feel like I'd spent the day in my favourite armchair: driver fatigue was never an issue.
I still miss her, and her perfect beauty.
In a perfect world, I would want to be buried in her, like a Viking chieftain. I'll never own another car that would make me so happy.

Older cars are awesome. You just don't get the same feeling with new cars. There's something about an older, clean, well kept car that gives you this awesome feeling of enjoyment.
Modern cars feel like they "try hard": Styling straight from a spaceship, electronic gadgets that will only age and break.

I hold the keys of 2 brand new cars, but still prefer my good 'old '01 Ford Focus. No technology, just plain driving. I love it
The real problem is not that new cars have tech, the real problem is that 99% of the time they have shitty tech, lack of fluidity, insane input lag, frame drops, everything is slow af, just look at the new 7 series key, yeah it’s cool that it has a screen but what a shitty unresponsive low-resolution low refresh rate laggy screen. At these price-ranges they could have easily included high quality hardware but they didn’t. Also for new french cars for example who though it would be a good idea to control radio sound and climatisation through a laggy touchscreen ? Buttons are required for things that are THIS important, so that we can turn the volume down without crashing the car into a wall, so that we can control climatisation without hitting other cars etc.

Fantastic review Doug. I have a regular 740i and you nailed every single point to the letter. These cars are a joy to drive at any speed and and still get decent fuel economy for being 2+ tons. Mine still gets 26mpg highway, just like it did when it was brand new. Even lacking the massage option, one doesn't notice they've been driving for 10-12 hours. This particular car looks like an Early 01 model, probably a July or August 2000 build. My E38 was built in September 2000 and got the 16:9 Widescreen setup. Just that touch alone makes it look FAR newer than it is. Add a MkIV DVD Navigation drive and map disc updates can be found through 2016. Quite useful when cell signal isn't available. Mine actually got the MkIV upgrade under warranty and it earned its weight in gold in Middle of Nowhere Indiana.
I checked the VIN you can see at 03:21 and it this model is from 05.2000. Good guess!
A gentleman and a bad guy in one. The best limousine of all time. My unfulfilled dream. A car that still takes your breath away when it passes you by...😍
A combination of elegance and sport.
The only thing I would put on this model is B6 Alpina rims..💪
The seats were not meant to massage. They were for long trips and the lower seat would change the pressure points. That is why you hardly feel it. I was a technician for BMW when that car was around new. I would argue that the E39 is the perfect sedan, but I agree that this was the best 7 series ever built.
Did you wanna come around to my house and install some foglights for me, former BMW technician, I've got an e46 sedan.

It was and it wasnt. :) The car in the film was a 740iL. BMW would not allow them to destroy 750's making the movies. They did replace the badge on the trunk, but thats it. They had 6-8 iirc. You can spot the trim in the car during interior shots. 750s are full leather - stitched door panels, dash, etc. 740's are vinyl/leather inserts for airbag area on doors, but otherwise vinyl. Tip: when driving around town, ie when not on a highway, to get a little quicker acceleration/response don’t put the gear lever in normal “D”.
Amazing car!! I would bow before the owner! This is impecable! Beyond words! And, I also see a less flashy and more mature Doug. I like it.
I bet doug can review a Mitsubishi elevator (literally the elevator) and have a lot of quirks and features and also the amazing driving experience .
Johnny Yu 😂 wtf
*insert Doug's voice*
when you press the G button, you can go to the ground floor...
Let's see what happens if I press the Emergency stop button!
just wait for a lift/elevator enthusiast to review a mitsubishi which are better than other brands such as KONE or Schindler
And give it a Doug Score.
You want to feel old?
That phone there is closer in time to the original iphone than the current iphone is
No shit lmao
Lmao obviously
Thanks mr.bateman

People with no reading comprehension in here. That's a horrible fact, take it back!

Had one. Black/black. Was really powerful. Took off like a rocket. Great interior. I had the IL edition. Great sound system too.
Doug is much calmer in these old videos. I kinda like it. ASMR Doug edition
Doug the type of guy to enter a million dollar luxury car dealership dressed like a farmer
Farmers are millionaires....
Some of them are
You missed the double layered windows... I think that was standard
Rich people dress how they want to. Most people who dress up do so because they're pretenders.
Doug the type of guy who buys water and set it free in the ocean... 😎

U sir are not original. This statement has already been used. SHAME ON YOU FOR COPY PASTING.
My favourite 7 shape, knew someone on the day who had the shape before this, and that was amazing as hell...
Beautiful car also the 850csi is also classic design 👌
It's good that you are talking of your preferences.
Thanks for making this Doug. I've got one as well and it's amazing how many people adore this car. BY FAR it gets the most views on my channel.
u have the real car man, best BMW years
West Van Garage yeah. A 2001 bmw is better than a rolls... Yeah for sure
West Van Garage q
@@owendesautels9612 Is a rolls better? Of course - if you're looking at luxury and status symbol. But I would much rather have an e38 MSport than a rolls royce from the early 2000's.
U have an fridge in the back?
I always loved the look of that car
Same here
Yup!
I was hoping the button in the ashtray would be for the passenger's ejector seat
Its ugly

Oh man my dad had one of these back in the day, it really was the smoothest ride of all time. He had one then my grandpa and uncle got the exact same one. Ran for 250,000 miles too, so ahead of it’s time.
Still have mine in mint condition, a dark grey. '99 e38 728i, installed the 18-inch M-parallel rims, and an M-sport steering wheel. Still drive it on sundays.
I had a 99 750il in Germany in the early 2000's. I got it dirt cheap because of a big oil crisis. Loved it. Drove it for three years and sold it for what I paid for it. Only downside was doing the 100k km service. 4k Euro and there was nothing wrong at all. I laughed about the trunk. I always thought mine was broken! And yes... The Nav system was as bad as you expect. Mine was in German and it took me months to figure out how to get it to stop telling me to go to the last destination that the original owner put in last.
When the fuck was a Big Oil Crisis in the early 00s in Germany? I didnt noticed it
I would like to add to this as many features were missed (i have owned 2 of these cars, and i agree, when pulling in to a carpark NO ONE questioned this car, it looked like you purchased something very limited (only 1032 were ever made).
My last one was a black (and was nice, videos below). However parts that were missed on this review.
- Outside mirrors could fold in when parked (with a button inside)
- The trunk had a Hydraulic open and close feature (not shown here as not fitted to this model), the remote open then would fully open AND close the trunk, however hardly any had this option (the fully open and close) fitted, it needed hydraulic pipe, pump and controller
- The 1998 phone was WAY better (but was analog), one in the front and one in the rear was also an option (in the arm rest not shown)
- The seats had a "sports" option which added thigh support (not shown in this car but the button position was there and had a blank in it)
- Newer (2001) had bluetooth as well
- Also had speech control (not showed in this review) but could dial numbers on the phone from your voice actually reading the numbers out to the car (VERY advanced for 2001)
- The front seat belt height adjuster were automatic, and would move up and down as the front seat was moved forward or back (this worked in my car and never broke)
- It was SILENT in the car, all doors had double door seals, one on the door, one on the chassis
- The ash reay showed was replacing with a money holder, as not all people smoked (it had coin slots in it)
- The front center arm rest DID have storage its located under that arm rest acess from the front (not shown in this video)
- The rear suspension was hydraulic leveling
- Also had Dynamic Stability control (not fully shown in this video), via a gyroscope located in the engine bay (that would fail, was in the ABS control unit)
- The head lamps were auto levelning (if one front wheel was up a kurb the lights would skew to keep them level on the road)
- The front screen was very easy to upgrade to a newer wide screen (16:9)
- The navigation was also up-gradable to DVD (see below videos)
Videos:
- Mk2 (CD) to Mk4 (DVD) navigation upgrade
: ua-cam.com/video/kiFtemqvVm4/v-deo.html
- Glovebox hydraulic damper replacement
: ua-cam.com/video/wUExPSdlYkQ/v-deo.html
- Side repeaters to LED upgrade
: ua-cam.com/video/fdaDRl56TnQ/v-deo.html
- My BMW 750iL when it was on CTV to represent one of the James Bond cars (BMW Canada asked me to borrow it as i was one of the only people in Canada to own one)
: ua-cam.com/video/sr1FuVwvEWw/v-deo.html
- BMW Voice control feature (i never fitted this but was on the list to do while i owned the car)

Only 1032 people were as silly as you.
@@schick5646 Please explain how this is constructive and how this can be seen as not offensive by myself and others reading this, you might want to also take some time to explain how this can be read by others in a way to not have it confirmed how you seem like an internet troll with nothing to do other than to send faceless remarks which are tantamount to internet bullying...
So cool thank you! Looking at yours now
Super-cool share. There is -nothing- silly about stewarding one of these. Been hauling a silver Z3 for a -decade- now. That was a great generation. And cool CTV!
@@contactATashleygriffin Also the steering column moves all the way up when you shut off the car. Then lowers back down to where you have it normally set when you start it back up.
Oh my. This… this is beautiful. I love this.
Beautiful design, innovative technology, fantastic engine, and Tomorrow Never Dies really cemented this car's legendary status.
I have to say, this example was low spec by comparison to my 2001 750iL in England. Mine had double glazed windows, refridgerator in the back, full seat and audio controls in the back arm rest, plus second phone in the rear arm rest, a powered self opening and closing boot (trunk) lid, blinds all round, lit mirrors in the back of the front head rests for rear passengers and....wait for it... a FAX MACHINE and fax point built into the back of one of the seats. "Fax me in the car" I used to tell people.... I miss that car....
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing
Double glazed is very common in 7 series
It is very useful both in thermal n sound isolation
When u close the windows u dont care about any issue happens out there ..
I've got an 98 740il!! In my oppinion the most loaded car for it's age was the E38. There's one called L7 or the Alpina B12.
This E38 in specific as Alexander's said it's really base and the video doesn't emphasise that. You could get an endless list of features that back when it was new no one had it and those features are just coming out in the new luxury cars.
This car really is base spec.
There's basically no options for rear seat passengers. It doesnt have Msport package either
God that sounds good. North America however does not get the futures typically of other countries like yours.
Doug is the type of guy who would get mad at himself for interrupting a conversation with himself.
Mr. Cuddles 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lol
Why can’t he be this chill every video?
Circa 2008, my then step dad had an 01 740il in Biarritz blue with tan interior. I loved that car and have admired the e38 since. I’ll definitely own one if I can come across the right combo for the right price.
Thinks it's "The best luxury sedan ever"
Gives 53 out of 100
WTF
I think it's clear Doug score cannot measure car's subjective appeal.
Dimitris Moustakas it’s fuckin old. What do you expect? The Doug score is about modern day tech and vehicles. This is more of a novelty review of a car that makes him happy.
This car is a ship its fun driving like a boss
Yeah. I listen to this guy for comedy.
Doug is the type of guy to truly appreciate a good turn signal stock

ImetGodinperson hahaha
I just bought an e46 for a beater car and the first thing I noticed was how nice the turn signal feels
i had an E39, and i can contest that the turn signal stock does feel excellent.
I had a 1998 740i which was great - had an even older style phone included than your model. I don't know if your version has it, but mine had a 6-disk CD changer, located in the trunk (my new car doesn't have any CD player, to my annoyance). Had it for 14 years until it was totaled by a deer. Solid like a tank.
