The first generation of the 7 Series debuted in 1977 and lasted until 1987. It had to offer some outstanding technologies to compete with the cutting-edge Mercedes S-Class.

yeah it's more like a devolution, the previous gen was okay but my favorite is still the E38.
The only appeal to their Chinese market… big is beautiful…

The G11 has been the only nice looking 7 series since the E38 imo.
Exactly, they look like relatives, especially interior, really nice & classy. Too bad they didn't hang onto this design.
Some 7s from other generations look like they don't even belong to BMW family.
I agree, it was a short lived revitalization in the design compared to the models before it, but after that it went horrible wrong again. What's up with that...

The front end of the new one is hideous, the rest is fine, though the car is too high overall. Still can't get over how beautiful the e38 is...
If they removed the d.t.l and raised the actual headlights upward it would look better since the headlight design will compliment the huge grill

Bimmer’s design is rubbish. It should look back from its 70’s and 80’s design elements for inspiration.
Agreed the New front is Hideous like it was from China. I only wanted the Previous or The one before the previous model.
If the 7th generation is my future then i better live in the past with E36.
first 3 are the best cars of their era.
As soon as I saw the E38 in the movie Transporter with Jason Statham as a kid I fell in love with this model. Of these latest models the G11, before facelift, also looked great. Good proportions, aggressive front end, yet a great limousine. What happened next is an abomination.
I also became interested in the E38 after I watched the transporter movie. The model appeared before in 007, but it was a short cameo. In the transporter movie there were a lot of scenes with the car, and that's when I started wanting one ever since.

I had an 735i. It was a great car for the dealer. The car was so advanced that it had automatic sunroof - basically it would open and close on its own accord without any of us pushing any button. We brought it back to the dealer like 3 times and replaced the motor, the server, the controller unit. At the end when it refused to close after we opened it, we asked the dealer to just close it tight and remove all power to the sunroof. While they charged us about $3k for the replacing all those things, they only charged us $240 to close the roof and remove power. What a great car for the BMW dealership.

E32 was a very handsome car especially for its age, but the E38 is just drop-dead gorgeous, it’s the best looking BMW ever made IMO, with absolutely timeless style. It looks luxurious, sporty, imposing and stately at the same time, which is hard to pull off.
Looking at that thumbnail, it’s the E32 that still looks the most epic to me. When that car was introduced in the late eighties, it was the best car in the world by a mile
If you look at the new i7 closely its a throwback to the first generation of 7 series.
They are all beautiful cars, each in their own way. I love the new boy. My favourite of all time is the E38.

The 7-series had a predecessor, the E3 (2500, 2800 "die neue Linie") that actually was the model that opened up for the attack on the Mercedes Benz S-class, and did so very well (had a 3.0S for many years). Just check the car magazines from back then. Especially the model 3.0Si was known as "the King of the Autobahn" for a reason... :P
Any 70's and prior BMW is a work of art,... Even the (in)famous Isetta... The new BMW's on the other hand... Like someone said it here... They are monstrosities...
The E3 was a good car. Real materials. Went downhill thereafter.
The E65 does have controversial looks, but technologically had many world's first. World's first 6 speed auto g/box, first car to use centralised infotainment system (i-drive), which every luxury car maker followed soon after, radar based adaptive cruise control, and if I'm not mistaken, auto headlight too was pioneered by the E65. This model made such an impact back then, the W220 S class became obsolete overnight. It was only with the W221 that mercedes could finally compete with the E65 technologically. Just look at the trunk lid design of the W221, and compare it with the BMW's E65. You will know what I'm saying.
The E65 would have been an amazing car if the design wasn't so bad. It has the best handling chassis of any 7 and had amazing technology for its time. Great V8 engines too. Just had terrible interior and exterior design.

That’s a huge exaggeration - E65 had advancements but did not render the W220 “obsolete”. First-gen iDrive was utter trash. And the design…the less said, the better.
I owned an E65. Great when new but the glues and plastics caused them to fall apart. No dipstick for oil. All the tech ruined the car.

My favourite design is the e23 (the 1st one). I had one made in 1986 with facelift of the front. I would have never sold it if it didn't, after many years, reached the point where in each trip i was not sure if i would make it back home.
The E23 and the E32 are still the most reliable 7 series cars !!!
You can always repair them fairly well and then they would run for another 30 years !!
If you keep an eye on the chassis ( rust ) they would last forever , cause of the lack of too many electronic stuff in general !!
With the E 38 came the more complicated electronics and lots of probs in many ways !
But still very reliable!
Just too big and clumsy for me !!
The e23 and e32 were the most sporty 7 series BMW’s ever !!!
Very robust and a great pleasure to drive !
And still a big saloon !!
The overall car industry stopped making quality cars since 1998 !!!! Period !!!
Only lobbyists and other questionable graduates make profit from questionable measures in production in General !!
Gasoline engines are still the best overall functioning way of travel !!
For short travels is electric not too bad tough .

@@t.o.5398 Thank you for your ansnwer. I agree with you in everything. Yes my E23 could have remained reliable. I think I didn't have the best mechanic man working on its maintenance. After a rather big accident, i somhow lost a bit of thr interest of making a large investment on it.

I had the E32 (V12) and the E38 (V8) which was superb, I skipped the E65 because of the ridiculous styling and had an unhappy time with a Merc 350S before returning to BMW with the F01 which I liked very much. My present G11 is also an excellent car but with an inferior GPS system. The new G70 is unfortunately again a styling nightmare. Maybe I will get used to it but I am not sure I will go for it. Since it will most likely be my last car I will choose carefully and maybe keep my present one for the duration! Favorite: close between the E38 and the F01, but I will pick the 740i E38.
You should have been part of the design focus group.
Shoulda just stuck with e32 or 38.
If I had one of those I wouldn't ever let it go.
Sorry but it sounds like a tremendous waste of money to me, buying all these new cars which quickly depreciate in value.

E38 at the time released 1994 was the most beautiful, and The Transporter and 007 made it a dream for any BMW fan! E38 models 1995-2001.
E38 was the first 7 series to be available with active cruise control in the final year of production. F01 was not the first

I always was an E38 guy...but I now have an E66 and damn...it is the perfect mixture of old school and new school. Love it.

I will get the e38 one day, one of the most iconic bmw ever made. Am a huge fan and really happy that it exists. Getting one is not such a big deal, but keepin it... My dream is to drive the e38 as a daily in these days.
I had an E38 for 5 years from new,beautiful car and I did just over 200,000 miles and enjoyed every drive,I’ve never had a 7 since as I felt they were never as svelt as the E38
I am still driving my E66, it is still running great!

Thanks to this video I learned the following about my E65 (V 12) Engine:
1) Worlds first V 12 GDI Engine
2) Worlds First car with Infotainment system. This system uses Fiber Optics to communicate.
3) Best selling Seven Series BMW of all time.
Bonus knowledge for those of you who don't own the V 12 Seven Series BMW:
It has Chemical Warfare Detection Capabilities.
The new BMW 7 Series looks like a Rolls-Royce.

The 2018 7 series is one of the best imo. Established design, updated, has every feature you could ever want and even the base 740i is super quick, 0-60 in 5.4 seconds is more than anyone needs. The new design certainly stands out but looks ugly to me.
My parents recently got a RWD G11 740i- It’s super luxurious, but it’s decently quick and it can do donuts around a pole 😁

Features rendered it totaled when they broke. Plastics and wiring designed to crumble. Terrible cars. Plus no dip stick for oil and no spare tire. Crap. Just crap.

At first.... I was not really into BMW's and their creativity....BMW is definitely creative and unique
It appears that the E38 wins hands down here, and I can't say I'm surprised. (Although they do have the worst designed cup-holders of all time, and should have been equipped with the supremely engineered units from Saab)
Along with the E32, they are an elegant and timeless design, with great build quality....and they're very enjoyable to drive.
Tipical American,,, ze Germans don't blend eating/drinking with driving.. you don't need cupholders !!
The first three models of the 7 series were beautiful and classy. After that a degree of in your face vulgarity seemed to take over. Love from England
Not limited to BMW though, car design in general took a nosedive since the early/mid 2000s.

I had a 2001, 740i sport in Silver. To this day that was still my favorite car ever it was perfect.
