This video is a summary of an important paper that blew me away.
Three of the leading causes of death:
    • Heart disease
    • Cancer
    • Metabolic illnesses
With each of these causes of death, there is some type of dysfunction that destroys the mitochondria. The essence of the problem is an excess of oxidative stress and free-radical damage.
Normally, the body protects against these things through its antioxidant networks. Glutathione has been considered the most important antioxidant. But melatonin is even more powerful and effective than glutathione.
    Benefits of melatonin:
    • It’s a powerful antioxidant
    • It’s 2x more powerful than vitamin E
    • It triggers antioxidants like glutathione
    • It promotes sleep
    • It supports the immune system
    • It has anticancer benefits
There are two forms of melatonin, one being subcellular melatonin, which means it’s inside the mitochondria. It’s there to help protect against oxidation and free-radical damage in the mitochondria.
    A lack of melatonin can:
    • Affect your sleep
    • Cause inflammation
    • Cause you to lose your antioxidant protection in the mitochondria
    • Lead to chronic degenerative diseases (especially of the brain)
The largest stimulus of subcellular melatonin is near-infrared light (NIR).
A few things that give off NIR:
    • The sun
    • Campfires
    • Fire in a fireplace
    • Candles
    • Incandescent lights
    • Infrared sauna
    • Infrared lights and lasers
Being outside in nature and in the sun may be just as important as eating healthy. Infrared light also protects against UV radiation.
Being exposed to artificial lights (LED light and blue light) is a big cause of a deficiency of infrared light.
    What you can do:
    • Get outside in the sun
    • Get a therapeutic near-infrared light
    • Switch your lights to incandescent lights
    • Have more fires or use candles

One point I wanted to clarify. I am not recommending taking melatonin supplements but instead triggering your mitochondria to MAKE its own melatonin. You do this with exposure to the infrared spectrum of light - sun, fire (campfire, candle flames, fireplace, etc.) or using some red-light therapy. AND start to restrict the blue light (computers, cell phones and artificial lights). When I personally take melatonin, my sleep sucks. Some people might sleep better with it but anytime you take a hormone the gland that produces it (hint, hint - pineal) doesn't have to produce anymore and the body starts depending on external sources. So, the best solution is to trigger the cells' ability to make melatonin itself.

Hi Dr Berg, I don't know if you will read this but I wanted to reach out anyway and thank you. I'm only 25 and in pretty good health currently, but several members of my family (plus a few friends' parents) have recently been diagnosed with various forms of cancer, all in a very short space of time. To cut a long story short, this has led me to discover your UA-cam channel and I have been watching a lot of your videos multiple times each, taking notes in the process. Your talks about melatonin and the sun, as well as fasting are two particular subjects which nobody in my family seems to know much about and certainly didn't teach me as I was growing up. I feel as though I have learnt so many things through you, which I would probably never hear about through going to see "regular" doctors. I love that you promote healthy living through nature (e.g. sun, eating natural foods) as opposed to supplements and medication. Thank you so much for creating this channel and providing so much life-saving information for free. I feel encouraged to live the rest of my days as healthily as I can, and hopefully I can also pass on some of my findings to my loved ones and in turn help them.

Fluorescents are cold drab lights with little purpose. Incandescents produce light and heat. Lighting is needed more in winter than summer, which is great because the extra heat is put to good use and easy to distribute. It's such a win-win; how did they ever get the idea that poisonous mercury infested lights were a better choice, just because they can last longer.

I love the way he explains the entire paper in such an accessible way. First, he recognizes that we are capable of taking responsibility for our own well being, instead of counting exclusively on medical interventions when things go wrong (and more difficult to solve). Secondly, as illustrated by the pandemic, science shouldn't be restricted to scientists. The lack of knowledge leads to bad decisions and can be fatal not only at the individual level, but for all of us. I admire people who go out of the academic bubble and take their time to do this.

This video connects all of the important dots I had in the past two decades as I became more aware of human health and things that affect it. It explains why youngsters can survive on crappy lifestyles, why human will die (because we age), why do we age and why do we even decline over time which almost exactly correlates with the natural decline of melatonin in our body. Even seemingly unrelated, why successful people tend to have highly disciplined lifestyles - wake up, get out and sleep at the exact times that perfectly synchronize with the nature. It vindicates so many thoughts, theories and beliefs from so many places. I’m in utter joy and gratefulness of Dr Berg’s work and I need to take a moment to collect myself now.

I am older, and can say that the percentage of people that have an awareness of the need to question what they eat and their relationship to nature - compared to society's expectations (or just because something tastes/feels good) - is much greater now than when I was growing up. The main issue then was simply weight related. Etc.

You did see the newest research that doctors are now calling senior cognitive decline type 3 diabetes? They did a study where they put some seniors on a carbohydrate restricted diet with fasting, and their memory improved after a short period. Within like 30 days or so. Those that continued on the diet apparently kept making improvements in their memory and cognitive functions. Couple that information with increased exposure to infrared light (sun light), I wonder how much more they would improve? I also saw a brief about a nursing home in Europe somewhere, that the residents rooms are arranged so that they all have access to a central "city" with shops, cafes, a park, a library, etc. the residents can come and go freely in their "city" but cannot leave the premises. But they can walk with friends, have a meal or snack, go to the library, live their lives in a safe walking community. I thought that was pretty novel.

@@rhan856 There is no doubt that getting sunlight has an accumulative effect when it comes to aging. However, the key is to NEVER let yourself burn. Also, to counteract any negative effects that sunlight has on the skin, you can take a supplement called Astaxanthin. Taking 12mg every other day is all that is needed to protect you from sun damage. There are clinical trials on its use. I personally don't like sunblock because of all the chemicals most of them contain. Everything regarding health has a risk to benefit ratio and getting 10-20 minutes of daily sunlight far outweighs the risks in my opinion and I've been in the health field for over 27 years.

Gosh, I wonder how my grandmother lived until age 99, when she'd heard nothing about any of this ? My sister is a doctor, and she writes for the National Health Magazines; Says if you take too much Melatonin, your body NATURALLY stops making its own. Like the dr. to explain that one for me ? Too bad we can't find REAL foods to eat anymore; everything pre boxed with extra salt, white flour and sugars ? Waiting for your reply Dr. Berg. Thanks.

I'm an analytical chemist who studied the use of Near-IR radiation for chemical analysis for my doctoral dissertation. I can confirm that Near-IR radiation penetrates deeply into your body. The reason is that the energy of these photons is less than the energy of electronic molecular transitions, so it is not absorbed through that mechanism. The only way it is absorbed is through overtone and combination molecular vibration transitions, which absorb very weakly because those transitions are "quantum mechanically forbidden". But because molecules aren't pure harmonic oscillators, they are slightly absorbed. So these Near-IR photons can penetrate, and even bounce around multiple times before they are absorbed. They may penetrate as deeply as ~ 10cm before being absorbed, so the beauty of it is that you can wear thick clothing (as in winter) and still receive a fair amount of Near-IR radiation.

Mr Berg, first of all i want to thank you for all the beautiful work you do, i'm Greek and all things mentioned in your video making me realize that the good state of our older generations here ( im talking for those over 90 yo) is mostly related to a strict traditional style of living that follow without hesitance. Such a style considers being under the sun as it's main pillar. God bless you Mr Berg, my wishes to all the healthy oriented community of this channel, may Jesus be always with you and your families this new year 2022!!! Happy new year!!!

I also live by farmers, there is a man who is 90 years old he sold most of his farming land but kept a small acreage of it that he upkeeps I think he gets around or better than some 60 year olds. We all need to be with mother nature more and technology less.

A month ago I purchased a Rouge Red/infrared Light panel using leftover FSA funds. They have a nice tabletop model that will allow me to see if we use it before spending much more on larger panels. We really enjoy it so far and hopefully will continue. Can get pretty dark in the north in winter!

Totally agree with the concept of inducing our inbuilt natural response for production of beneficial enzymes etc. Have you looked beyond up-regulating production of glutathione and melatonin -- into areas such as catalase and superoxide dismutase (aka SOD and/or SOD2)? Undoubtedly, our own production of glutathione and melatonin are beneficial, but so are these other factors :) You shed some amazing light (yes, pun intended) on how our systems are stimulated by external factors (such as infrared etc) to protect and repair. Thanks for this insightful video :)
