    I've never been interested in growing Dahlias until this past Summer when all my You Tube gardeners seemed to be luring me in...
    And it worked!!
    I'm now growing some from seed, and wondering how leaving them in the ground is going to go next Winter,
    mainly since I have zero interest in digging them up!
    Because I'm in zone 8, I think I can get away with that... 🤞
    Unless we get another arctic blast like this last Winter, which then, I guess I'm in a zone 5?
    And then my Dahlias will be not be toast, but popsicles!
    I do like watching, and learning about what my own Dahlias will be looking like under the soil, especially since I will not be unearthing them.
    It will be like having a gardener's x-ray vision!
    It's the adventures in gardening!!!
    Go Dahlias!!!

    I received dahlia tubers from an online nursery too early last year so I potted them up, waited for shoots, then used foil as a reflector to amplify the weak sunlight coming through my windows until time to plant them in my garden. Worked very well.

    I planted my dahlias in the border here in south of South Ireland, around the start of April, after potting them about the start of March. Over the winter we had Zone 10a conditions, so I started early, everything was going fine until mid April, soil temperatures were well above normal, then the weather flipped and arctic winds came down causing frosts for the last couple of weeks. My dahlias are actually growing flower buds the last 5 or so days, every night I put them under big garden tubs with mulch around the base, has the added bonus of keeping slugs away too. If they can hold on a few weeks, I might have flowers in early June. Complete newbie to dahlias here, will follow your advice next year and start potting them around April 10th instead of planting them at this point.

    Erin, appreciate your videos so much! YOU are the reason I grow dahlias. I had to rewatch this just to make sure I knew how deep to pot the up. I was wondering - how many total do you pot up? Have you thought about doing a video about how you care for the dahlia -in the pot- while you are waiting for the weather to warm up - in your pop up greenhouse. I never know how much to water them at the point they are growing to around 12 inches tall. I’ve never rotted them when I’m waiting for them to sprout, but have messed up and rotted a few while I’m ‘growing them on’. I also live at 9,200 feet in CO and it takes FOREVER for my raised beds to ever get to 60 degrees - and our water is well water and freezing - so my dahlia’s don’t thrive. I found a UA-cam couple in Fairbanks Alaska, who grow in the challenges I do - and they use gallon buckets with self watering insert - and ingenious gravity system for watering (that I’m going to try this year) - so I’m going to try it this year to see if my dahlias and tomatoes will be happier in warmer soil with warmer water. I just can’t give up dahlias! The cold soil/water sure helps me understand why my dahlias almost never bloomed or did anything in the landscape. A bit better in raised beds but still not the size plants others get. We gardeners have to figure out how to adapt to our unique climates and geography. Now I just have to figure out hail….

I grew dahlias for several years, but I don't have a place to store the tubers during the winter, so I've had to purchase new tubers every year. I’ve potted up several tuber clusters as you have shown and all but 2 have a small stalk and leaves so I did water them a bit. They are in an area with approx 3 hours of dappled sun. They will be going in the ground in the north facing yard but the soil temps will not be in the 60’s likely until mid to late May when the sun is more consistent in that location. How long will they be ok in their current pots? Again, I really appreciate your videos content!

    I planting Dahlias for the first time ever😳
    How far below the tuber should I amend the soil.
    I have good soil but it’s to heavy or dense for the Dahlia tubers. I was going loosen the lower soil with sand and then do a mix of potting soil spagnum moss and pearlite to fill the planting bed.
    I’m in Southern California zone 10
    Greatly appreciate any suggestions .
    Really enjoy your videos

    Wow just in time for when the dahlias I ordered have started to arrive. I’m in zone 8A and will probably have to put some in a plastic pot to get them started since I’m getting my fence redone soon and was planning to plant them in that area so I’d rather avoid the possibility of damaging them if i was to plant them in the ground now. Is that the best thing to do? They hopefully wouldn’t be in the pots for too long it’s just so that they’re not in the packaging still and can get them started immediately

      Update: just got my 2 Mango Madness Dahlias in their pots! A few of the tubers broke so I removed them and one of the clumps only had 2 big tubers but they had eyes! I watered them and left them in a dry spot out of the rain for now until I need to move them once they sprout or when my fence is done! Hoping for a great season with them 😁

    You’re my go-to dahlia Girl 🙏 please advise...I had planned on planting my dahlias at our new property at the end of April (zone 6) , so I potted them up, about 3 weeks ago, our dates got changed, so now they have to stay in their pots until the end of May...can I put them in bigger pots until the end of May, then transfer them to the ground, or can they stay in their current pre-spouting pots for another 6 week’s? ( can’t figure out how to attach a photo 🙄 )

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  3 роки тому +2

      Depending on the size of pot you used you can probably keep them in the size they are in now. I know some breeders actually grow them all year in 4-inch pots so I'd think that if they are in a pot big enough for the tuber to get in there originally, they'll be fine in there until you can get them in.

    Very helpful! Once they are in the greenhouse how often do you water them? Should the soil just always be slightly moist? Thanks!

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  3 роки тому

      Yes, slightly moist until they have a good amount of growth and then I switch to watering them more like any other plant: thorough deep watering, then allowing them to dry just a touch. They do like consistent watering.

      I've seen Nicole of Flower Hill Farm channel write on the tuber with what looks like permanent marker.
      She also wrapped some tubers in plastic wrap. I'm trying that as storage is what has prevented me from growing dahlias.

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  3 роки тому +1

      @@Edu_Kate Yep the marker works great but then I still need a tag for the pot and the garden. The plastic wrap works great. The year I did it I had perfect results. I stopped doing for a few reasons, including that it works best with single tubers (divided in fall), takes forever to do and uses a lot of plastic. I think it makes sense in a situation like Nicole’s where taking chances with storage can have big business consequences. I don’t lose money if I lose a tuber, I just have a bit of disappointment.

    Im getting Hs Date this year! I dont guess im too late on ordering them? Im gonna put them in my front landscape with the Russian Sage, and Blue Victoria Salvia and Nepeta. I think they will look great with the blues. I also bought some Dahlias at the grocery store, have you had any success with those? My only concern is that they look a little dried out and shriveled.. i will give them a shot though. Hs Date is probably my favorite!

    Have you ever pinched the top while still in the temporary pots or do you wait until they are in the ground? I fear I planted too early and with insufficient window lighting because mine are a bit leggy, but do have enough leaf sets to hard pinch... just wasnt sure if I could do that now or should wait.

  • @RobinMary100

    Yikes, I got overly eager this year and potted tubers like you have here, but too early. I don’t have a greenhouse or grow lights and the shoots are really leggy. I’ll try to move them to safe light during the day, but question: is it okay to pinch them to make them less leggy?
