I have bought a big bunch of "slug collars" from Argaralan this year. They worked an absolute charm last year on lettuce, will also try them on dahlias this year. They work about 95% of the time, hugely reducing slug damage on my lettuce last year. Sure there is always the odd one that somehow gets through, but last year at least I got lettuce, with a very few damaged leaves, unlike the year before when they just mowed all my leafy greens. If anybody interested, if I may give you one tip: do not fall for the cheaper ones that are translucent green in colour, those are very flimsy and break easily. The ones from Agralan are very sturdy, definitely not cheap, but will last for many years.
