Watched a very informative video last year from Swan Island Dahlias in Oregon on dahlia cuttings. It worked well for me and I increased the number of my Cafe Au Lait and Spartacus dahlias!
Heather does an amazing job explaining in the videos. I'm looking forward watching and learning more. Also, can't wait to come see the fields again this year.
Thank you for such a clear and informative video! I'm new to Dahlias and just having my first tubers come up (in southern California), and I'm looking forward to pinching them and propagating them! Thanks again!
Super awesome sharing of knowledge. That is something I truly appreciate, it’s unselfishly shared, and that brings forth a good vibe that has me choose to order tubers from you guys.
This is very informative, I like dahlias too and bought some tubers, now I have an idea how to propagate them. I have single petals dahlias that I grew from seeds and haven’t tried this yet. Thanks for sharing, new friend here.
Thank you for this video. I have an order on the way from you and really looking forward to it's arrival! I'll be trying this propagation method I'm sure!
Loads of really helpful information. Thanks for making these videos. It's appreciated. Your climate is similar to here in Manchester, UK. Our last frost date is usually mid to late May and this year has been a really cold start so only just getting going. Love my dahlias and having to build up stock again as bad winter saw me losing loads of them.
Great sharing host informative content.soon I will start my gardening your tutorial is so helpful to me thanks for sharing host.New friend here i hope to see you around ❤️👍
Thank you so much Heather for sharing your knowledge. 👍 I love dahlias and I’ve collected over 20 different varieties. I only split the tubers in the past, but I’ll definitely try taking cuttings next year like the way you showed us. The next thing is to get a new house with a big garden to grow these babies🙂
Wonderful video. I would like to know how you prepared the ones in the beginning of the video, to get them started and rooting. I live in zone 4 in Canada, and have put my tubers (4) LOL away for the winter in my cold cellar but when did you start the tubers off? Had they wintered and then planted for the cuttings? I really want to try this just need to know the timing Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I am excited about the beautiful dahlias we will get to enjoy from my dahlia tubor purchase from Swan Island for next year!
Very nice. I will try using pure honey as a rooting hormone and fungicide before I buy fresh rooting hormone. Because my water is treated by the city I will allow it to sit overnight in a bucket to allow the sanitizer to vaporize.
Great video. Very informative, thank you! I have a few questions: 1. You said the tubers that you take the cuttings from are discarded. Would they not be able to grow a proper plant after you take the 10 cuttings? Would cuttings past around 10 not provide viable plants? 2. You mentioned a few times that you don’t sell the cuttings but use them to build up stock. Would these cuttings not form a full plant with its own tubers? How would they help you build stock if these aren’t the plants you sell? 3. When pinching the tops of your “lanky” plants, would you not be able to use the pinched off stem to propagate into a new plant? Thanks again for this info. Will definitely be trying this myself!
It was really a nice presentation. Thank you so much. May I ask something please.1. Shall we put pure vermiculite or shall we mix it with potting soil. 2. Which part of the plant shall we spray the Stimplex? 3. When shall we stop spraying the stimplex? 4. When shall we stop fertilizing them with Miracle Gro? I hope you will reply and answer my 4 questions. I really need when I will try this method. Thank you again for this great video.
1. You should put the vermiculite with potting soil. 2. You should spray it on the leaves. 3. You should spray every other week, until you transplant them outdoors. 4. We only use Miracle Grow on the first watering then Stimplex for a couple months.🌸
EXCELLENT Video - Thank YOU for the Dahlia knowledge..It would be even better if you guys did a video of taking cuttings from a dahlia that's already growing in a pot or ground...where the tuber is NOT exposed...
Great idea! However, this would not necessarily work unless you had the pots of tubers growing in a greenhouse as it is too late to take cuttings when dahlias standards start growing.🌸
Thank you thank you! I have several varieties I’d like to do this with! I know this video is over a year old but I hope you’ll see it and reply. So a cutting taken in February will wait in the green house until planting out in May? How do you hold them from growing all the way up in the greenhouse? Is it the temperature in the 70’s that keeps their growth slowed for so many months? They grow so fast usually, how do you slow them down while you wait for your weather to allow them to be planted outside? I hope this makes sense… Thank you in advance for your reply.
That is the best and easy to understand video. I have two questions, please give me the answers if you see this comment. Q, can you propagate the one from pinching? There something else I can use to replace Stimuplex? Thank you! have a sweet dream!
Usually when you are pinching it is too late to do cuttings. Ideally you would do it in the winter and start them in a greenhouse. We do not have another product to recommend in place of Stimuplex❤️
Once a tuber has sprouted and a cutting has been taken then the cutting needs to be grown in a greenhouse type setting. The it needs to be transplanted out after the last chance of frost. It will then grow, bloom, and produce a small clump the first year!🌸
Once you take cutting from Bulbs, what’s you do with the bulbs , save them again or just through them . And how to get new bulbs after the season ? Great video thanks a million .
Thank you for making this wonderful video. You wrote below that the cuttings form a tiny clump of tubers in the first year. Are these big enough to store, or how do you care for these until the next summer? thank you
Hello, thank you for this very informational video about dahlia cuttings. I have a question though. I'm in Milwaukie, OR, not far from you all and am wondering when I should start my tubers and then when to take the cuttings? I see a lot of videos on how to take cuttings, but having a hard time getting a timeline for the Portland Metro Area. I am in the process of setting up a greenhouse in my backyard. To I start the tubers in the greenhouse with a 75 degree temp? Or do I start them inside and when do I start? Thank you so much!
You take cuttings in Feb, so do you put the tubers in the dirt trays a few weeks earlier? What do you do to them? A very light watering and wait for them to send up shoots to cut?
Hi, I was just wondering if you can still do this at home with a tuber you want to grow? just a couple of times? also, when you pinch out the dahlia, can you use that as a sprout to propagate? thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I have a question. After you've dipped the cuttings in root hormone and placed them in the soil, do you water them then? Or do you wait until 4 hours later when you add the fertilizer? I'm experimenting with some cuttings and want to make sure I do it properly. FYI- I'm using powdered root hormone and not the gel as shown in this video. Thanks in advance for your response! I love Swan Island Dahlias.
Heather if you are removing a dahlia from the ground and one of the tubers have broken off and doesn't have a root on it can you put that into the soil and get it to roots and produce new growth? Thank you for sharing your information I truly have gained so much knowledge by watching your video!
I’m not an expert; however, I had wondered the same thing last summer. I found out that you need at least one eye to ensure the dahlia is viable. I mean … worst case, you don’t find an eye (cause they can be tough to locate!) and the tuber does nothing; it’s worth trying, in my humble opinion. 😊
So with a greenhouse that warm I guess you don’t need bottom heat to encourage roots? As long as you are leaving some of the eye on the tuber that same eye re-sprouts ?? ....or it encourages a new one to pop up...I guess this is not the same as people taking cuttings that includes a bit of the tuber -doesn’t that (other)method permanently kill that eye?
Usually when taking cutting it will either sprout from another eye or send up another shoot from that same eye. No, we do not need bottom heat because our greenhouse is 70°!🌸
I was told many years ago that Dahlia cuttings flowers tend to be more vibrant in color and better flower form the first season it blooms! Is that true? Thank you for sharing
I’ve just purchased some of your dahlia tubers- first timer here! Very excited! Anyways, I was wondering about your advice on when to plant here in Oregon. Am I too early now? Also, what sort of fertilizer to use. Do you use the Stimuplex on your dahlia tubers as well?
Welcome to the wonderful world of dahlias! We would recommend planting more towards Mother’s Day for Oregon, as the soil and night times are still too cold for planting just yet. As for the use of Stimplex, this is only used for performing cuttings for Dahlias, and not for dahlia tubers. This is another way to propagate and grow more plants. Happy Gardening!
Do you water down the stimplex? I was able to order some but the label is very difficult to read....tiny light colored writing on it....so please let me know about that....thanks so much !!
So will the cuttings grow tubers eventually? Can I do this with a Dahlia from walmart? Can I take a cutting of the branch? What would you do with a Dahlia from walmart to make it into a million Dahlias-- give or take a few lol ?. Sry Im a super beginner.
I have a question regarding the stimplex. How much water do you add to stimplex for the dahlia cuttings ??? How much stimplex per water and I know you spray them one time per week....
Good Morning! I'm Brazilian. I have been trying to sow dalias with seeds, but I have been unsuccessful. They were born weak. What is this substance that you wet the highlighted seedlings?
Thank you very much!! great video! By the way, do you know any information about "late cutting" method by Swami Vinayananda, for the plain land? He wrote detailed about late cutting in his book "Dahlia: the flower majestic" Thank you again, dear!
About the tuber she said yes ,it would be large enough to store ,I took two cuttings this fall and already there is A new shoot coming up beside one of them, don't have a green house don't know if it will survive my 7b winter though
Something I thought was that if a Tube fell off of the main plant it was no longer any good, I'm very confused and was just about to throw away some tubers. I would appreciate your advice, thank you for this eye opening video 💜
If they fell of without an eye connected to them then they are not viable. But sometimes a tuber can come off of a clump with an eye connected to it! 🌸
So sollte man niemals Stecklinge machen! Wenn man das Messer nicht nach jedem Schritt reinigt, überträgt man Viren! Stecklinge sollte man immer mit der Hand abbrechen.

Hi I do put them in the garden after taking one / 2 cuttings an grow away see (small garden channel )on UA-cam 👍👍
We take many cuttings from each tuber and then the tuber is discarded because the tuber is tired! Each cutting will produces small clump!🌸
Yes you would plant the tuber in the ground after taking 1-2 cuttings!
If you take cuttings from an established plant and root it mid season can it just be kept inside in a pot over winter? Do they need a dormant period?
Thank you for making this wonderful video. You wrote below that the cuttings form a tiny clump of tubers in the first year. Are these big enough to store, or how do you care for these until the next summer? thank you

We do most of our cuttings in February in our Greenhouses (70°- 80°).🌸
You take cuttings in Feb, so do you put the tubers in the dirt trays a few weeks earlier? What do you do to them? A very light watering and wait for them to send up shoots to cut?
Hi, I was just wondering if you can still do this at home with a tuber you want to grow? just a couple of times? also, when you pinch out the dahlia, can you use that as a sprout to propagate? thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Yes, you can do this 1-2 times before planting the tubers. Once you pinch it is usually too late in the season to be propagating!❤️🌸
Will the cuttings flower at the same time in summer as a spring planted tuber would?
Hi great video, how deep is the medium for the tubers initially, for best sprouting?
It is about 2 inches!❤️
How do you arrange the tubers that will have cuttings taken from them....depth in the soil, distance apart, straight up or laying on their sides etc.
Hello so those cuttings can count as cloning the tubers???
They would be multiplying the variety!
Heather if you are removing a dahlia from the ground and one of the tubers have broken off and doesn't have a root on it can you put that into the soil and get it to roots and produce new growth? Thank you for sharing your information I truly have gained so much knowledge by watching your video!

Can you do this with a heat mat and grow light indoors?
Thank u thank u I got a lot of seeds I'm so xstd to get to work.
Hi its amazing how can we order these plants for this summer.
Order at dahlias.com!
I was told many years ago that Dahlia cuttings flowers tend to be more vibrant in color and better flower form the first season it blooms! Is that true? Thank you for sharing
This is not necessarily true, it could be true for certain but not for all of them!❤️
Are these sitting on heat pads or just the 70+ degrees of your greenhouse for warmth?
The fertilizer you use after cloning the dahlias, can that same method of fertilizing be used for other flowers for cloning as well?
I would assume but we do not have any experience with it!🌸
I have potted my cut off plants from tuber and planted in pots, now will they give off any flowers or is this just to grow more tubers
Yes, they will grow more tubers and produce flowers!
will the cuttings develop new tubers with time?
How long will it take for the cuttings to grow tubers?
They will grow a small clump the first year!🌸
I am taking cuttings now, how do I store them for the winter? I am in zone 6 where we have a pretty milk winter (usually).
You cannot take cutting before storing, they would be taken before planting.

We do not use humidity domes, but we do heat our greenhouses at night to keep them at least 70°!🌸

Good Morning! I'm Brazilian. I have been trying to sow dalias with seeds, but I have been unsuccessful. They were born weak. What is this substance that you wet the highlighted seedlings?
We use Clonex as a rooting hormone and a pro mix soil for starting the seedlings!
🙏🏻👍🌸❤️
Thanks for great video btw....My mind was blown to see yards and yards of babies! Can we have your tired tubers??? Haha!
Yes , sell them 2 for 1 $. Us is condition and I will be happy to give them second life!
Nope, unfortunately those tubers are done as they have done their job!🌸
Can they be eaten?
@@dougl6304 Tubers can be eaten but we have no experience with eating the plants.❤️

Very interesting! Does these cuttings give flowers their first year? And do they give reasonable tubers for next year? Thanks, mark
She said they do flower in the first year. How wonderful 🙌🏻
