    Yes, I was going to say one of the best dahlia dividing videos I've watched! Thank you for being so clear and showing easy to hard clumps. I still leave my clumps too big. Now I gotta go watch how you dig and store. We dig, wash, divide, air dry for a couple of days (probably not enough) and store in labeled paper bags. I got mildew the last 2 years, but they grew anyway luckily.

    Hi Evelyn. My name is Geoff, I grow dahlias in my garden in Manchester, U.K.
    My wife and I have been making a video diary throughout 2021 and we are now about to make episode 16, when we will show how we store our tubers for winter. Now, we don’t divide our tubers up into chicken legs in the way that you do, but I understand why your method is a good one, especially for people with limited storage space, and also for sellers in the USA where tubers have to be posted long distances.
    Would you mind if I talked about your video (which is the best I’ve seen on the subject) in my next video please? I would also put a link in the comments field if that’s okay.
    Geoff

    This video was very helpful. A neighbor gave a dahlia to a friend of mine, we didn't know what to do with them. I planted them in the ground without cutting all the necks! There were 3 clusters and 2 of them came up , one of them did not make it. Local people say they don't have to be dug up every winter so I left them in the ground, it probably does need to be broken up into smaller sections this spring. I had no idea about being careful for the crown and eye parts. I'm glad I looked at other people doing this instead of trying to merely wing it.

      @@evelynsgardenandnursery ok I backed into my tub with the dahlua. Upset I broke stem of flower. Bloom liived about a week , and its pod remains and still green. Is there a chance it will have any viable seed in it? Also tried to get clippings from it and snapped stems about 9 inches, I know what a story. Anyway I stuck them in the soil like a cutting. I checked those today they felt like they rooted because they would not let go of the soil. Should I dig them out to pot up individually? I really want to propagate as as I can from this plant. Backing into it with my truck gave it quite the disturbance. In zone 9a just starting to cool off and plant is in a big black plastic tree tub. Should I lift tuber leave tuber for winter? Lift cuttings or leave them. So many questions. Thanks for video

      @evelynsgardenandnursery  2 роки тому

      @@philortiz7519 Hello Phil! If your dahlia flower head was pollinated, let it keep going until it dries out, then break it apart to see if there are any seeds. And yes, it sounds like your cuttings may have rooted, pot them up! Hopefully they'll just keep growing. You should lift your dahlia tubers when the plant goes dormant, but only if you want to (i.e. if you want to divide it). In zone 9a, you should be good to leave them in the ground all winter. I have another video in the works that will be about digging and dividing, too, so watch for that for more details! Hope this helps! 💐

    Thanks for this video! It's a lot easier to understand and see the considerations when splitting. I am very interested in your video on storing dahlias, since I noticed you weren't cleaning them all as much as other people seem to.
    I like that you're more 'this one is damaged but it might grow still' about it, since a lot of other info seems to be 'cut off anything damaged because it might rot'... and I am more okay with living life on the edge and trying out the riskier tubers.

I lost most of my tubers last year because I divided them in the fall and they shrivelled. I'm going to try to keep them intact until the spring this year. Thank you so much for your kindness! I’m almost done with my next set of videos on digging/storage, I’ve been working hard on them. Sorry to hear you lost most of your dahlias last year, that’s so sad! I hope I can help you be more successful this winter 💕💐

      Hello Darcy, I have finally finished a video about storing dahlias. Here it is, I hope it helps you this winter: ua-cam.com/video/9HOQAO-mMpc/v-deo.html

    This is the best video yet... it's a shame I hadn't seen this yesterday before I divided my 3 year old Edinburgh cluster. Dividing into 30+ pieces and I'm not confident any of it is viable as I kept breaking the neck

      @evelynsgardenandnursery  2 роки тому +1

      Oh no! I'm hope some of your tubers will be okay, I'm sorry to hear that. If you want, you can check for viability by doing a "pre-sprout" test. I wrote a blog post about that method, here: www.gardensbyevelyn.com/how-to-pre-sprout-dahlia-tubers-test-for-viability-and-get-earlier-blooms/
      I hope this helps!

    Thank you for your video. I learned a lot. Now I realized why the dahlias I was dividing won't grow, I was doing it wrong all along. I can confidently select dahlias now, going to a dahlia tubers sale, very excited.

    Thank you so much, your video made alot of sense. I know now how to divide my dahlia Uber clumps and appreciate you taking the time to point out the anatomy before you dived into dividing up. I would love to see a video on how a home gardener without a greenhouse and without a cold frame and with a small house, can pre spout the tubers in the spring in a flat or something in the house before planting out. My typical last frost date is late May.

    That was a great, informative video, thank you. I would have liked to see how you divided up the big tuber into all the smaller ones but that was put on fast forward so we could not see. I know you showed earlier in the video but would have been good to see lots more examples. I have about 20 very large tuber bunches so need all the help I can get!

      Thank you for the feedback! That gives me an idea for another video, maybe just a recording of going through a few more examples... I'm glad the information in this video was helpful for you. Best of luck on those 20 tuber bunches!

      Hi jjeffers! I just posted a new dahlia dividing video that shows more examples, including all the details, just as you wished! I go through three examples of dividing big dahlias tubers and tried to show the whole process.
      Here is the link to that video: ua-cam.com/video/fBDcHC1kHz4/v-deo.html
      I hope it helps you! Best wishes! 💐 -Eve
