  • When the Glock® first appeared in the 1980s, it transformed pistol design forever. But it had one flaw: there was nothing you could do to customize it - no aftermarket parts or accessories. Things are MUCH different now, as Brownells Gun Tech Steve Ostrem explains. Aside from five generations of improvements made by the factory, there are now tons of aftermarket components to help you tweak your Glock® so it's perfect for you. Steve tells us about 12 add-ons, upgrades, and accessories that'll make your Glock® easier to adjust, work on, operate, and… just plain more enjoyable to shoot. You can install/use ALL of them yourself, and each costs LESS than $30!

    I've had a Glock 30SF in .45 for 6 years or so. The title of this video interested me, so I started watching. I have fairly small hands, and it is difficult wrap my fingers and get a proper grip. Thus, it is, or rather was, difficult to operate the mag release button and the slide release button. Those two extended releases were totally easy to install and hugely worth the minimal cost.

    Slide lock lever should’ve been the first one on your list. As a senior citizen I don’t have the dexterity and the strength I did when I was 25. This made that difference! And this old dog can still hunt, and hit what I am shooting at!

      its a slide lock, not a slide release. shouldnt require any strength because its not meant to be used when its under tension holding the slide back. to chamber a round on a glock just rack the slide.

    The slightly longer mag release made a world of difference when I was putting in a lot of hours at an outdoor training facility during the winter months where my fingers would turn to mush, especially on rainy or snow days. This was on my 23 and I just swapped it out with the release from a different model with a wider frame (I don't recall which one as this was many years ago).

      Until it hangs up on your clothing. I've owned Glocks since 1992 and it's only happened a few times but it was during a quick draw and engage drill. We were taught that when reloading from a locked slide(which is a bad)position to grab the slide and rack, point being it's the largest object to get you loaded and back in the fight. All these addons are completely unnecessary.

    • @eatingelizabethsfrizbee

      @Jaime Garcia that's what I started with a early Gen2 G17 right at the time you might get some non lined mags, I actually won Gen2 G23 at the Gateway Gun club Jacksonville Florida in 1998 and before you think I am bragging I got 1st in C class which is how GSSF scored so I could've been 73 or so I didn't win it because I was the best shot I'll put it that way.

      I'd be leery of the Vickers, Tango Down after market slide stop. It can be sharp, awkward for some users. I added it to my Glock 21 gen 4 .45acp 5yr ago. I was advised about the sharpness. The steel & design are + though. Keep in mind, any extended or large parts may screw up a carry holster or pop loose in a stress, range shooting.

      Don't buy into extended magazine releases though. You should have to turn the gun in your hand to release the magazine.
      I've seen people with those gimmicks lose their magazine while shooting. Also lose their magazine when their carrying inside the waist band because their fat pushes on it.
      So buy at your own risk. Glock spent millions of dollars designing their pistol. People think 30 bucks is holding Glock back from improving their pistols. I recommend getting some good sights that don't push out 😂 and a good holster. Those are my two upgrade suggestions for Glock.

      I don't believe it for a few reasons. First you'd need to replace springs. The 10k could easily mean 20k+ cycles especially if you account for the amount of dry fires, function checks, and just general need for cycling the slide like disassembly. So it is impossible to fire that many rounds and not having to replace the springs.

    A note about the Magpul Magwell, I have a sample size of 1 so take that for what its worth, it doesnt like my 10-8 magazine base plates. They seat but just barely, I gotta really press that mag in.
    In their defence, the mag-well is only 'rated' for Glock and Magpul mags, so those 10-8's are outside of 'intended use'.

In all my years of owning one, I think the extended slide release is the second best item you can buy especially for the Gen 5 one. Makes it so much easier to use and on top of that you can use your right index finger to release the slide (or vice versa if you're opposite hand). It makes everything work way more smoothly.

    I am in full agreement. Super cost effective upgrades. I have done most of them. I like the 5-7.00 grip plug. I feel it is worth the monet. If you were to drop a Glock pistol, the plud may stop the frame from cracking. Thank you- Super video. I am a fan Of Brownells as well.

    No add ons to help with the ability to rack the slide? As people get older and get arthritis their ability to hold the slide and pull back becomes harder. That doesn't even include people who through injury have become handicapped and as result may have lost the ability to hold the pistol and operate the slide due to nerve, tendons, ligaments, and/or muscle loss requiring a back plate that knob or extra wing tabs to increase the area and have the pull against the second surfaces, instead of just the pinch strength. Many firearms are usable but the tension /resistance of charging the weapon can require more strength. Once chambered they are able to fire the pistol without issue and "Last Round Hold Open" Slide release allows switching mags and then hitting the slide release brings them back withy enough ammo. It is those little addons that can make or break the option of using a 9mm verse having to depended on .22 cal handgun which is smaller, possibly not able to even be gripped for arthritis limiting how far a person can close than hands. This is literally the quote about "god created man but Sam Colt made them equals.

      @@RenoMay My comment was pointing out Brownells didn't list any of these type of devices as accessories and/or upgrades. The one you showed(linked) runs into a problem with the use of fingers for arthritis hands, if they can't grip the slide enough, reducing to a finger inside of a loop will be harder. That part also has slick curving sides which sadly reduces the usefulness, but for some it will be the right fit for their limitations. The Rear Back Plates that have the ""ears"" that stick out or small handle that you can insert to ether side(no not the giggle switch sadly...) which allows for them to squeeze the slide as much as they can, then have the rear piece catch on the side(s) of the hand(or able to hook on to many surfaces to do a push the gun forward to chamber the gun, instead of pulling the slide rearward) giving more contact area. Which allows the pulling with the side of the hand in addition the squeezing of the hand, which adds an addition point of contact to divide the force out to multiple points, which will hopefully overcome any limitations that they may have from age and arthritis. Let alone hand injury from damage or nerve damage, back issues that effect the nerves in the hands. There are so many ways to loose the ability to chamber a Glock style pistols it is scary. Hopefully most people will never experience them, of have to see someone the care about deal with it. That falls in with the AR-15 Pistol braces, they actually really do work to help people, despite everyone thinking they're just a way to get around the SBR stupidity and hassles....

      @Kurt Miller Exactly , sadly these items weren't on the list. Which eventually we will hopefully live long enough that the age and body breaking down becomes a problem. Not that it is good thing, and hopefully better treatments and cures will be forth coming, but for now it is a reality many have to live with.....

    I just ordered the Lighting Strike recoil guide rod from Brownell's, based on this video's recommendation. Nowhere on the Brownells site does it say it's only for Gen 1-3. It would have been nice to know, before I purchased this for my Gen 4 G19. Would have saved me time and shipping costs.

    Love Brownells, like the video... HATE Lone Wolf. Only time I've ever seen my glock become consistently unreliable was the one I put lone wolf parts and a barrel in. I'm a test bed of one, and it was 10 years ago so maybe their quality control has become much better. That being said, I'll never put any of their parts on anything I own again.

      The Joker personally I never had a problem. But stacking tolerances are a real bitch. I had a gen 3 G17 made in Smyrna and a G17 made in Austria. The barrels could be switched only one way. I took callipers to the barreling every dimension and for goodness sake there was almost no difference. And when I put the Aus barrel in the USA gun it was a tiny bit loose. (I don’t know if this is a common issue and really it didn’t matter but I was screwing around one day trying to put parts from different guns together and I “discovered” this).

    • @TheJoker-xw8zg
      @TheJoker-xw8zg 4 роки тому +2

      @@john-paulsilke893 Every individual gun has it's own individual tolerances... That's not just Glock, or because of the country of origin specifically... That's because every piece of the gun is made "to spec" and every piece specifically fitted into those tolerances.
      I'm not really sure your point but you're only making mine more imo. All the more reason not to screw with the tolerances of you're perfectly functional and legendarily reliable Glock with cheap, poorly made Lone Wolf products.

      I got a converted Alpha 🐺 9x19mm barrel from LWD about 3mo ago. I shot 250rd of factory 9mm FMJ in my NIB Glock 33 gen 4. No misfires, problems. The LoneWolf barrel worked great. I did notice a small rust colored burn mark on the barrel but I think that's Glock's stupid new "copper" colored factory protective coating. A Glock staff member told me Glock USA in 2018 went to a new brown, rust color packing grease. The 🇦🇹 execs wanted all Glock pistols to use it.

    • @TheJoker-xw8zg
      @TheJoker-xw8zg 4 роки тому +3

      @@DavidLLambertmobile I've seen that same copper grease on Gen 1's and 2's. It's just their standard grease to make sure the gun doesn't rust before they ship it to a gun dealer and you buy it off said gun dealers shelf. It's not meant to be the best, it's just meant to preserve their gun untill they sell it. That being said, not sure your point about the copper grease, other than you talked to some "exec's" about it.
      The Alpha barrels seems like their top of the line barrels, but I'd still never buy one. There are better aftermarket options, especially if you don't mind a premium price tag.

      I replaced my factory spring at around 20k rounds. You will know it’s bad when the slide doesn’t go fully into battery when you gently release it from slide lock (IE ride the slide). And it’s a captured guide rod, so yes, you throw away the whole assembly and get a new one.
