I think he was trying to get a confession from Giles Corey so that he could take his land, thats good that Giles was defiant till the end.

Agreed, after he died people started to wonder if they were really doing the right thing with the witch trials as well because they said he didn't seem like a witch.

Mr. Corey had more stones than his inquisitors could pile on him.

I recently heard that the sheriff who executed Giles was also a sadist. I mean, inquisition type torture sadistic. That gives another idea as to why they crushed him to death, if Corwin truly was a sadist.

i mean giles corey seemed hardly innocent if he did in fact kill that man. he should have been charged harder with that murder and not gotten off, but to be wrongly accused and punished to death in such torture might have been his bad karma for killing the man and accusing his wife. giles corey doesnt come off as the innocent type to be caught in the group of the actually innocent people that suffered, for ex his wife. it was a strange punishment either way, it was so medieval. i think the thing that might have made him seem witchier was the punishment and the fact that he was able to sustain it for so long even being an incredibly old man, the fact that it took two days of punishment and a person jumping on might have made him seem supernatural and the sheriff might have been acting in fear either of his truly being a witch but its possible he was just an asshole

I do agree he definitely should have been charged for murder if he did kill that man. However, I don't think he should have been killed in such a brutal and inhumane way. He was a pretty terrible man for sure though! I agree with you there. I never thought about the fact that it took him so long to die could be construed as proof he was a witch. I like your theory. There was a woman who was pressed to death - I think in England - and she died within 15 minutes! Thanks for your comment!

@@wanderingcrystal .... After two days with out water your tongue swells, third day it it automatically sticks out, the sheriff and other township gave him water not to help, just to make it last so they could get a half ass confession to take what they started out for!! It takes a real sadistic man to do this, but He also knew this was not the first man or woman they lied about murdering!! Conveniently, besides Giles rewrote records, the rest were burned in an unfortunate "accident" The man who had a church and was also accused of witchcraft confessed because he thought it save him and certain members of the congregation, but no, he got to watch as I believe it was 13 other innocent people hang, before they hung him??? They called themselves Puritan??? This was so out of control by this time they were drunk with power and greed!! Grown Adults easily manipulated by Children?? The true monsters knew to destroy all records and the only reason why they know the truth is because certain people left whent back to England and wrote these stories and hangings down and it was finally brought to light!!! These people were scared shitless and can ya blame them, it's unimaginable when you really think about adults behaving this way??

Jacob Goodell is one of my ancestors. His father Robert Goodell is my great-great-something grandfather. The account that I read was that Giles had stomped Jacob to death in Jacob's home. And yes, he got away with it. The Goodell family was also quite prominent, although they ended up donating a great deal of land to the town. The Goodell family was never involved in the witch trials directly. But as they were well thought of and liked, I believe that Giles Corey was brought up on witch charges and executed as a result of the murder, which is documented to have been mentioned in his trial. Something like, "Isn't this the same Giles Corey who stomped to death Jacob Goodell some 15 years ago?". I've seen others who have written similar accounts and statements from their own research.

I feel like salem witch trials is just weird. You can't just execute someone because they wore a witch hat. Like bruh

I heard that’s why the founders put into the constitution wanted to put into law ‘innocent until proven guilty’. After Salem, the effects of of it spread to the rest of the colonies and was basically like an event that was talked about it for generations. Many elderly during the revolution decades later would have been old enough to have remembered talk about the Salem witch trials.

@@lenorevanalstine1219 ...And from what I have Hurd from some of my older grand parents (when they were alive anyway) when I was growing up as a kid, they weren't able to take his property legally, because he would not confess and his family was able to keep it,but by the time this BS was all done and over with they wanted nothing to do with it and sold it to someone else later on down the road!! Some of the stories and other things I've read,in some old documentation I wouldn't even talk about on here , because I have no clue if it's true or not!! As most people know He wasn't a pleasant man,He killed a farm hand for stealing food(apple's) so they say,But that's what they used to set this story in motion,His past caught him and they were able to paint a bad picture of him!! Did the man deserve to have what happened to him and his wife,Not at all!! And when you look you'll see just about every man was wealthy and either was a tavern owner or Church,it didn't matter, once you confessed that gives them the right by law to legally take everything you own!!! The whole witchcraft thing was just beliefs that certain slave's believe in,and when they all came to Salem they all brought everything they owned and family and their slaves were part of there families! I apologize for getting off track here ,but I do like to talk about this, and to others that may know anything more about it,I Have been trying to branch out and find other folks who may know more about this story and other things but I haven't had to much luck in that department, not just finding someone interested enough in this, and someone who lives or has ties to Salem!!I'm researching stuff because of my Ancestry, not Just because of what happened to Giles Corey but I'm trying to figure out what happened to the rest of the Corey's and How many were their, were they any more their, stuff like that!! Town Hall stuff?? IDK!! But anyway nice talking to you and I hope I haven't offended anyone by the way I carelessly talked on here the last time,Which I do apologize for, I let my emotions get away from me!
