"Giles Corey (September 11, 1611 - September 19, 1692) was accused of witchcraft along with his wife Martha Corey during the Salem Witch Trials. After being arrested, Corey refused to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. He was subjected to execution by pressing in an effort to force him to plead - the only example of such a sanction in American history - but instead died after two days of torture" - Wikipedia
My first time listening to the album was when I was in a very bad place and constantly feeling down. I just sat down one time and listened to it in it's entirety. I don't really remember much of it now but what I do remember is I really connected with it. It was like all my emotions turned into sound. I haven't listened to it since, and this review has made me question how I enjoyed it so much at the time.
@deez nuts I mean most of the album is very accessible. Only thing that in my opinion makes it very inaccessible is that the weirdest and most expiramental track is the first one which could put a lot of people off from listening to the whole thing
Unlike Deathconsciousness, Giles Corey calms and comforts me. Perhaps the reason for that is that I discovered it during a very dark part of my life, which was going on for so long that Barrett's work didn't even feel depressing. I used to fall asleep to this album every night, it actually worked better than the meds. I still return to it from time to time, always listening from beginning until the end, and after the final moments of Buried Above Grounds fade away, there's always a smile on my face.
@WakeNoWhere I did mention the Head Device thing in the review, didn't I? I think I mentioned it when I was going into how the book references back to things that happen on the album. I didn't really go into the suicide attempt that much because I figure HANL fans already knew about it.
Yeah this album (and book) had me in my room for 2 weeks with lights off and candles burning just blaring on repeat. I bought it the day the box set was released and I hadn't heard it yet (but was a huge fan of HANL). There aren't many pieces of music that can make me feel what I felt when I was so immersed into this record.
After your review I got curious so I listen to "The Haunting Presence" and WOW!!! It just feels like you're watching a really good horror movie. Its kind of scary and I like it a lot. Where you listening to this while the hurricane was outside? You sir are a maniac.
11 years later, this album has literally changed my life, even if i'm not really into these types of sounds. amazing! you've gotta listen to this at least once before you're on your deathbed.
@tooltard there are some spots on youtube where you can sample tracks. i'd like to urge you to check it out. if you like it from what you hear on youtube, then venture into purchasing it direct from the enemieslist website. :-)
I came from listening to No one is ever going to want me because I feel very sad and needed some music. It’s a flatsound nirvana salvia Plath kind of night and I really feel like that song got me. wanna cry right now, but thank you Anthony. this is nice.
Your review was well done. You told us how the music was put together and told us what to expect. You also told us the emotional impact the music develops in the listner. I think I have enough information about the album to make a decision. Thanks.
Dude's a real music critic. Kinda like those 19th C French lit critics. Main thing is they actually read--close read, slow read, expliquaient--the primary text. Yeah that. Thx man. Seriously thanks for this. "Where there's life there's hope," right? (You enact this not just talk about it.) 💗
Absolutely INSANE that you consider Buried Above Ground to be a weak track when it's easily the best one here and brings a real nice closure to this album
Curious how he reviewed everything that had been released by Dan Barrett, or Have A Nice Life, but didn't bother to review the Black Wing LP that came out, even though he posted about them on his website. Would have loved to see that album get a proper review.
@skateNappreciate expecting and hoping are two different things. if you were hoping something bad would happen to me, then, uh, well, i dunno what to tell you. i'm here, i'm reviewing, get used to it. :-P
Does anyone know where I can get the book? I don't want to get the music since its hard to find for vinyl and the ones I find are costly and don't include the book, so is there anywhere where I could get the book by itself?
I'm back a decade later to say that this album is a 10
same
anything that dan touches = 10
TRUE
Best depressive album ever
real
I walked through the woods alone in the middle of the night listening to this once and it was one of the creepiest moments of my life
palbo4 why would you would you do that?
That sounds awesome
were there voices speaking to you in unknown and mixed tones?
yeah I believe you
More like the gayest
Get a friend loser
Still waiting for that Deathconsciousness review melon
I swear he did do it already
He did unnatural world. This album is a 10/10 the same way The Thing is a 10/10
Love your profile picture. Sunn O))) for life!
still waiting

you liked and enjoyed it because it gave you comfort. as if it was telling you “it’s ok to be like this”
Giles Corey is probably one of my favorite album's I never knew that I liked experimental stuff until I listened to this album.
@deez nuts I mean most of the album is very accessible. Only thing that in my opinion makes it very inaccessible is that the weirdest and most expiramental track is the first one which could put a lot of people off from listening to the whole thing

This album definintely left an impression on me, the end of The Haunting Presence was like "Wow....." Totally mind-blowing.
I need a physical copy of this album and the book.
It's coming out on vinyl with the book this year! Asked them label, said in the last half of 2015.
Yes its true....
Did this ever come out on CD?
And now they're like $100 each :/
