To this day I recall my grandfather who raised me coming home from the hospital one winter. My grandmother looked at him and asked, "What did the doctors say to you". He said, "They told me to give up drinking, smoking, and all things salty". I looked at him and said, "What are you gonna do"? He looked down at me, smiled and said, " Just as well for me to die one way as another". Granted he did give up smoking but that was it. He was around 65 at the time and died at age 83 of bone cancer. He suffered for 2 years until the cancer took him but doctors said the reason he lasted so long was because his heart was so strong. The drink, salt beef and cabbage weren't his downfall, it was the hard life of working at sea, jobs no one else would take and making a home for his wife and kids without ever thinking of himself that did.
