  • Dave talks about the things he learned when he walked 20,000 steps every day between March 2018 and August 2020.
    You don't need to walk 20,000 steps every day to enjoy the benefits of walking as a fitness activity. Dave invites you to check out his daily ten-minute podcast, Walking is Fitness, when you're ready to begin a new fitness journey.
    This video is not intended as medical advice for you. Dave is not a doctor or even licensed personal trainer. He's just a guy who loves walking and wants to motivate others to do the same.

    Wow! Great job. I walked 10k everyday for a year and thought that was challenging! I used to run a lot, and lift weights during a 20-yr career in the military. Now, I walk everyday. At 62, I find it so beneficial for not only my physical health, but my mental health as well. Very peaceful way to exercise.

    I set myself a 10k a day challenge when I was in my office job, I did that for about 5 years, totally changed my approach to fitness! Now I’m a professional dog Walker and avg 25k per day, so I decided on the rare day I was quiet I would let my body rest even if it meant not getting my 10k. But during those 5 years that commitment to myself improved me in so many ways!

      Most people can walk about 1,000 steps in ten-minutes. At that pace you can reach 20,000 steps in about 3 hours and 20 minutes. I almost never did that all at once, but just found ways to keep moving throughout the day...along a with a longer intentional walk or two. Thanks for watching!

    I walk 10,000 steps every day power walking around a measured area and sweat a lot in the warm sun plus a lot of normal walking everyday which I don’t count at all
    Joined my wife doing aerobic Zumba 3 times a. Week.
    I enjoy the exercise after quite a few years of not very much. My wife is also happy and surprised -pleased that we do Zumba together and never dreamed that that could happen.
    It also goes along with us now doing a very healthy diet
    Enjoyment and feel good factor is very high

    Hi Dave. I am new to your podcast and think it could be the solution I need. I am an avid cyclist, sometimes cycling 150-200 miles in a week. But as the days grow shorter and the weather gets colder the rides are not as frequent. I am taking on the 90 day challenge, which should just about carry me into the 2024 cycling season! Looking forward to your daily chats. Thx so much 🤜🏻🤛🏻

    Duuuude! Sorry... Dave! Shout out to you from Australia 🇦🇺. My friend and I have been listening to your podcasts as we drive (not as we walk). But we do walk... well I like running actually... and heard your speil on strava and strava is a great motivator. It's free by the way, you only need to pay for a subscription if you want all the extra data. Which most of us don't really. But I find it definitely helps to get you out there when you know your friends are gunna see your stat's... or when you've seen a friends stat's. I'm like dam... they been for a run today, I need to get that done too. So I'm definitely an advocate for strava. We also have a training group on just move app where you can create a "race". You can set the amount of km it’s gunna be and every one has about 5 days to complete it, walking, jogging, cartwheeling if you like and we have ppl all over the world in our group of about 20. Some are doing it in the snow, others in 30 degree heat. But it keeps us moving!
    Anyhow, love your work. Just had to come here and say hi from down under!

    • @WalkingisFitness

      That's a great question. My best recommendation is to visit a running store and let one of the experts find some shoes that are best for your feet. Try them out and see which feels right. The experts also suggest replacing your shoes about every 500 miles you walk.

    How far does 20,000 steps take one? Ten ,miles or so - depending on leg length? Does that take close to five hours? Now I wonder how does someone find an extra five hours each day? Hmmmm... too many questions.

    • @WalkingisFitness
      @WalkingisFitness  7 місяців тому +6

      Great question. On average, most people can walk about 1,000 steps in ten-minutes. Using that math, it takes about 200 minutes of walking to reach 20,000 steps. That's about 3 hours and 20 minutes. I almost never did all that at once. I learned how to find opportunities to walk when I used to sit...like waiting for my car's oil to be changed. That was a totally different mind set and it took time to make it part of my lifestyle, but it was a game changer for me. Thanks for watching the video.

    • @WalkingisFitness
      @WalkingisFitness  3 місяці тому

      I don’t get sick much…usually an annual cold. Of course, there’s no way to directly connect my walking to how often I get sick. Experts say exercise can help build the immune system, but there are other factors too. Thanks for watching!

    • @Goodbyeeveryonehere
      @Goodbyeeveryonehere 2 місяці тому

      Walking actually helps the immune system.
      The following is from google:
      "Not only does exercise get the immune cells moving throughout the body during activity, but it also promotes a lasting presence of these immune cells for up to three hours after exercise is completed. This provides extra time for the immune cells to identify unwanted intruders and keep you from getting sick".
