@@danielcolvin1611 probably just under 60 000 average, based on my historical data :D I don’t have any reliable data on steps, because my Garmin watch was on my hand, and my hand was on the 45kg (99lbs) stroller I was pushing, so there wasn’t the necessary movement for the steps to count correctly, and my phone was in a phone holder on the handlebar, also without the movement necessary to register steps correctly.

I did a challenge to walk 1,000,000 steps in a month, which, of course, averages about 33,333 steps a day (in a 30 day month). I tried to front load the challenge, starting with 35K a day. Some days I didn't hit the average mark. Then near the end of the month, I just went a little wild and thought, "How many can I do in a day, really?'... and I ended up doing 65,000 steps. This meant I could do far less steps the last few days, which was good, since I definitely needed to recover.

My Garmin adjusts its expectations, depending on my activity level. So, if I’m sick for a few days (little activity), it gets really condescending. “You’ve walked 5,000 steps! Good job, buddy!”. But then, if I’m extra active for a few days, suddenly it’s telling me “I fully expect you to walk at least 21,000 steps today and will settle for nothing less”. My Garmin is a real ahole.

I really liked this video because it's proof that more isn't always more. You seemed to get the most out of your 10k steps challenge, a little more out of your 20k one, and next to nothing/a negative impact with the 30k one. It reminded me of when I was researching to find out what amount of steps to shoot for and came across several studies that saw improvement really ramp up around the 3-4k mark and saw a drop of around the 7-8k mark.

With a degree in exercise physiology I can tell you that taking 1-2 days off a week from the start during this experiment would have likely prevented the crash you experienced. Rest really is an important part of your body’s adaptation to this increased stimulus on a cardiovascular, muscular, and psychological level. Probably on a hormonal, metabolic, and neurologic level as well.

I always tell my friends when they start lifting: take a week off after 3 weeks to recover. Also, take a de-load week every 6 weeks after that. They think it’s crazy but after 20 years, I know a thing or two about recovery. This applies to any exercise. I mostly convince them by discussing that a week off isn’t bad compared to months off for injuries.

Tip: Weight vest, 11% of your body weight.
Interestingly enough, the positive effect from a weight vest isn't from extra muscular strain, but rather because it physically flexes your bones, which stimulates osteocytes within said bones to release hormones that encourage fat loss.
Or so rat studies seem to indicate. (two groups of rats; both had a weight operated into them, one of the groups had the osteocytes in their rendered non-functional. In spite of both having increased weight to carry around, only the group with intact osteocytes showed weight loss. I.e. it isn't the weight itself.

hey craig can you make an update on your rent vs buy video? now that you have lived a few years with buying a house does it impact your life in different ways? people usually only talk about that while they are making the decision but rarely when they have the information to say if it was a good decision or not

Now I’m curious how you’re looking back on this month of walking. Do you have more energy now? Do you enjoy having more time with your family? Do you miss the walking? I need a follow-up. So many questions …

I just didn't have a lot to say about the matter. It's been more than a week now and I feel like days a longer because of all the extra time!
Other than that it's not much different. I didn't lose weight. My energy is about the same.

@@wheezywaiter I really enjoyed the video and somehow feel oddly satisfied that you didn't see a ton of improvements so I don't have to think that maybe I should do this. Although of course I should be getting more steps than I am... You are amazing that you can stick to these challenges.

At one point in the video, you talk about how tricky this can be if you don't have to do this kind of walking for work. A lot of mail carriers walk nearly 30,000 steps almost every day for their jobs, as do a lot of other folks. It's a lot! What I'm saying is, thank your mail carrier/delivery person whenever you see them, it's crazy how much they do every day.
I know someone who decided to walk 100,000 steps in a day, just to do it. He said he'll never do it again, but was glad he did it. Perhaps a video idea? I think you can definitely do it.

A couple of years ago I did a month-long walking challenge for charity. I committed to 600,000 steps, and noted I'd need to hit an _average_ of 20,000 steps for each day of the 30-day month - but I ended up walking a _minimum_ 20,000 steps every day, and hit over 900,000 steps in total over the month! That meant I was walking an average of 5+ hours per day.
I think the part most people find surprising is that I did it almost entirely inside my house (without the advantage of a desk treadmill). My living/dining room is sort of open plan, so I was able to walk figure-8's around my sofa and dining table, ensuring I wouldn't get dizzy.
People always seem surprised I didn't wear holes in my carpet - truth is, my carpet's still going strong, but I wore the soles off several pairs of socks!
Completely agree that walking so much actually gives you a ton of energy (but also tires you out). It was an awesome feeling. Even now I keep up 10,000 steps per day as a minimum, still doing those same figure-8's - and on the days when I can do more, like 20,000 or even 30,000, I feel great!
