*Only You* by them is absolutely gorgeous. Chills.
That's the very first one i did. I have it linked above
@@JayveeTV huh huh earlier today I was rewatching some of your vids. Have to go back and check that one
I just listened to him and his gang sing this on streaming. Brings back those jr. High memories. MM hmmm
Only you is definitely beautiful. My mum and dad loved the platters and when dad was in the hospice, dying from prostate cancer this song played. Mum cried (I cried), dad was oblivious to how close to death he was, so wondered what all the fuss was about. That's the memory behind only yoy now. But it's a beautiful song! ❤️
@@louisavevers9709 Carry on and good luck! We'll all get there, someday.
J, "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer" and "Twilight Time" are next for you from them
I agree with that, starting with "The Great Pretender".
I forgot all about Twilight Time!
Twilight Time is a fantastic suggestion.
Sleepy lagoon , magic touch and slow boat to china are also great songs of theirs.
seconding
The Platters - The Great Pretender
Roy Orbison - The Great Pretender.... is also great.
61 years ago! his voice is timeless. The Great Pretender is probably their most popular song
No, Only you is definitely their most recognised song
@@Tfisher991 I believe the Great Pretender and this one are the most recognized and Only you isn't far behind., but everyone has their opinion.
The Skyliners "Since I Don't Have You"
Art Garfunkel did a great cover of this classic!
If you like this then you'll love Johnny Mathis.
agreed
Oh my gosh yes a million times yes such a voice wow I have always loved that man....
The Platters put Mathis to shame.
Absolutely stunning talent and performance. No auto manipulation, just natural, God given talent. The 50s, 60s and 70s were the golden era of Rock and Roll.
In those days it was all about the voice...... No gimmicks, no sound effects, no auto tune......... Just pure talent. ❤️
Those voices. They were perfectionist. The whole group ,their sound ,and style impeccable.
Gene Pitney song Town Without Pitty.
I’ve been asking for Pitney for months, Mecca, only love cab break a heart etc etc. the guy had an seriously amazing voice! Great call!
Yes!
YES !
Love that song!
That’s the phenomenal Tony Williams singing! He was their lead singer for most of the 50s. One of my all-time favorite voices! I fell so in love with this band the first time I heard them as a kid! I couldn’t stop listening and got addicted to 50s music in general. Besides “Only You,” which you already reacted to, their other biggest hits are “My Prayer” and “The Great Pretender.” But you can’t go wrong with any Platters song from between 1953-1960, when Tony Williams was singing lead. To me this is what the word “dreamy” sounds like!!
how about Twilight Time?
The Platters= _The Golden Voice_ is what they called him.
I love the look on your face when you react to them... your eyes glow from amazement and happyness at the same time. You are so adorable!
This is pure talent. And clean lyrics, unlike artists nowadays like Cardi B etc... These singers/ bands had class.
Denise Branscum Amen 😊
JBP I do like classic rock, I used to go to all the concerts and meet the bands in the 70’s and 80’. I listen to today’s Christian music and it is so good in all genres that I don’t need to listen to today’s music. Why are you so angry? Why can’t people comment without coming across like a bully. Sure , there is probably some decent musicians out there nowadays but the ones getting the publicity are just plain nasty. The way you commented on my comment, I think you need anger management.
Yes indeed. Part of the genius of the Platters was that they often covered songs (like this one) that were old even at the time...carefully written songs in an era when songs were cranked out like sausages in a factory...and so the Platters' songs endure!
No autotune. Just talent.
Why bring in any comparisons at all? Things are always both good and bad depending on the context. When Rock n' Roll first came to be many said it was trash. Famous TV personalities said they will never have Elvis Presley on their shows because his moves and music were vulgar. So, it's all about perception really. Personally, I want artists to be able to freely express themselves, be it through hip-hop or country songs. I may have my personal likes and dislikes. But I will never turn my nose up at music which is not to my taste and compare between different genres of music from different eras. It's unnecessary and fruitless.
Everyone needs a minute to process how good the vocal is. Unreal.
A perfect vocalist.
One of the greatest of the era. The one and only TONY WILLIAMS with those vocal chops
The lead singer is the late great Tony Williams. The female in the group use to be married to Frankie Lyman.
Aside from his extraordinary voice that could soar so effortlessly, did you notice his precise diction which is practically unheard of today?
once you're done with The Platters, check out The Inkspots.
Java Jive!!
Ehidium - While we are at it, how about " The Ravens" and " The Orioles" . Thanks Jesus is Love
Ha this song is incredible
"Whispering grass."
@@kathleenmayhorne3183
Covered by two Brit comedy actors, Windsor Davies & Don Estelle, in the guise of their TV characters from the bbc sitcom 'It ain't half hot Mum', about an army 'concert-party', in the WWII jungle campaign against the Japanese.
It sounds odd for a sitcom, but at the time (mid 70's) it went down really well with UK audiences, & has become something of a classic piece of UK TV!
Roy Orbison - Running Scared
Oh, Roy Orbison is a great request!!! Yes!!!
Did you see this reaction he did?

@@AlexiHolford just watched it there! Thanks!
This was my father's generation's music, so I was raised on this!
Gene Pitney- something's got a hold of my heart
He did a wonderful version of that song with Marc Almond too
Mecca, 24 hours from Tulsa, Only love can break a heart, it hurts to be in love, Cara Mia... hahaha this guy had an amazing voice. No auto tune and some great instruments on some tracks.
Gene Pitney...wow...thanks for reminding me of him. He was incredible.
Poor young folks don't know what to do when they hear real harmony! I love country rap r&b pop rock......but these slow dance golden oldies are 💎 gems!
One of the greatest voices I've ever heard. Just beautiful music!
Once upon a time, being a vocalist was a high plateau for someone to reach, and the public sat and listened, and appreciated the incredible gift they were hearing, the endless rehearsals, the tweaking of a song, the WORK that goes into doing this. And we bought their records.
This...this was that time. The Platters were those musicians, and the truth is there were more than a few like them. I am gonna assume that the reason we don't hear music like this anymore is because too few people know it even exists.
You are helping that, my friend.
Look up Dimash.
How about reacting to another great tune from the 50s, “I Only Have Eyes For You” by The Flamingos SH-BOP, SH-BOP ⁉️
You should do the Skyliners singing Since I Don’t Have You came out around same era as the Platters its a very good song also.
OMG. I love this song, reminds me back when I was a little kid I was 6.WOW 1960!
This song always fills me with emotion, such a beautiful voice & I love the instruments.
My mom has this 45 rpm. She graduated high school in 1959, so it had to have come out around that time.
The Ink Spots, the Drifters, the Coasters, there was some great music in the 50s.
That guy's voice is silk.
I love you
If someone wanted to win a Karaoke contest, they"d sing "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Game Over.
Oh wow. That’s a tall order!
So many people live this group!
In my area it would be "Crazy" by Patsy Kline
Assuming the person singing can hit all those high notes.
The song “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” predates The Platters by 25 years. This song was written for the 1933 Broadway musical “Roberta” with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Otto Harbach. It was first performed by Tamara Drasin in the original Broadway production. You can hear Ms Drasin sing the original Broadway version here: ua-cam.com/video/50QO9vW9iUo/v-deo.html
Wow, THANKS!!!! 🤩
No auto tune here. Just pure, indisputable talent.
perfect example of a natural voice that brings happiness. especially when I play it for women. HA!!
My mom's favorite song. I haven't heard it in a very long time...It gives me chills.
We had some of the best music ever throughout the 50's and 60's, the vocals were unbelievable and the platters is just a small sample of the incredible voices that will live forever.
Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill
or
The Drifters - Save The Last Dance For Me
😊
I get my thrills on blueberry hill 💥
Beth Shadid 😆...🔥 that song...🙃
@@debbiedownunder8629 yes such a fun little Diddy 💃😁
This song got a boost in 1989 when it was featured in the Steven Spielberg film "Always" starring Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfus 💗
This song is soooooo beautiful that it hurts to hear it! ❤ One of my all-time favorites ❤ 💖 😍! Words are inadequate to describe it.
I love this song.
Yeslord
Loved this. Gave me goosebumps. I heard the Platters back in the 1950s. So nice to hear someone young appreciate their incredible talent. Thank you.
Ok aa song to recommend - go for it - " The Great Pretender" or "Only You (and You Alone)
Twilight Time. My favorite by the platters. It's a perfect song, musically.
I saw them 35 years ago, in England aged 11 and I cried the whole way through!!! They were about 50% original members, and sounded crazy beautiful! My parents kept hugging me!! And laughing!i was an emotional mess they sounded so heavenly!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of the greatest songs of all time.
You cannot and will not ever get tired of listening to the Platters!
My parents always played their records when I was a kid. And years later met one of the surviving Platters such a great memory!
Wow that just made me tear up brings me back to my mom and dad beautiful song
How does he sound so good??
God blessed and heaven sent with the voice of an angel!!
YeslordYep
You got it exactly right! Tony Williams' voice was second to NONE. All any good vocal group ever needed was a lead singer like him and the group instantly became GREAT.
This is my grandparents' music. I remember being a little girl and hearing it play while visiting them in Portsmouth, VA.
The most popular recording for slow dancing in the 50s. One of the best recordings to listen to--ever. Yes, his range is incredible and he has stupendous control over his voice.
Welcome to the Fabulous 50s my brother. The Platters were one of the most successful groups of the decade, and being a group of color back then made their enormous success even more impressive. The lead singer is Tony Williams whose magnificent voice speaks for itself.
It's all the way live..The Platters voices were perfection. Tony Williams voice is incomparable.
The Platters covered this song WAY back in 1958. I was just a poor lad of 13, working in a small town bakery, but they always had some mighty fine music on the radio.
03 other gems from them are:
Only You
The Great Pretender
Twilight Time
Tony Williams (Platters) is one of the greatest lead vocalists in the history of popular music.
You can count on one hand the male lead vocalists who could hang with Tony Williams, and you may not need all five fingers.
This was a #1 song in the USA, UK and Australia (my country) in 1958. I was a young impressionable 13-year-old then. It was in a time just before rock'n'roll took over the charts. Still love the song. Extremely talented group.
You are right. The lead’s voice is simply amazing.
The lead singer always makes my heart melt ..😍😍😍
Original lead singer's voice was absolutely beautiful. Such a distinct sound.
This was done in '58. I was 2 years old, so I heard it on the radio anywhere I went... because there was one radio station that played Rhythm and Blues, Country, Rock and Roll, One Hit Wonders, anything new that people liked. Elvis when he first started out, Aretha Franklin, Hank Williams, Everly Brothers, Coasters, Platters, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, you name it... and EVERYBODY listened to that station.
He is one of the very rear golding voices, I heard him 10 years ago and sound the same very beautiful.
My Dad used to dance with my mom in the living room and sing this to her! The Platters were awesome, alot of groups like this in the 60's. The Four Tops!
One of the most beautiful songs ever! Gotta dance when you hear it!
man ¡¡ those kind of singers like him are out of this world, they sing from their heart and their voice get directly deep to your heart¡¡
Bless you for going back and listening to this music. Some of the best singers and songs were recorded back then. TY
This is my favorite song by The Platters. What a voice!! I love watching people react to his voice!!😊
How angelic and beautiful a voice! But from the technical point of view, his range was amazing!!! 💗💕
Love the Platters, singing One of the greatest songs ever written. ♥️
He has a wonderful voice and was wildly popular even back in the day.
How can you listen to Tony sing and not understand what pure talent really is. I think it would spoil you when listening to anything after this era came to an end. I’m so happy to see you enjoying music fro my time. Enjoy..anything sung by Tony Williams.
Saw them on American Bandstand.
@Ted Richardson AB watched it faithfully always looked forward to the top ten reveal
Tony Williams' voice is unmatched.
The Platters were one of the first successful African American chart toppers. This song was number 1 in both the US and UK.
They had a lot of great hits. Only You, The Great Pretender, My Prayer, Twilight Time, Harbor Lights.
I was so lucky to have grown up with this music and slow dancing ... kids today don't know what they're missing !!
Tony Williams... what a magnificent voice. Timeless.
Platters and Drifters were tops in the late 50s.
Drifters - Under the Boardwalk
The Platters performed at a club where I worked in 1974.I was taken aback by their vocals. Even though they were past their heyday they still sounded superb.
One of my dad's favorite groups; so many good memories
There will never be beautiful music like this. I listen to my Mothers music and remember this well. So lucky was I. A class act 100%
Growing up in the 1950's and 60s was a privilege, music wise. Tremendous talent emerged.
Ella Fitzgerald "Every time we say goodbye"
I think he'd faint if he heard Ella.
Ella Fitzgerald & The Ink Spots - That's The Way It Is
The fabulous Tony Williams on lead vocals. What a voice. Thanks for posting this. Love The Platters....
Great Reaction...No "Auto-tune" my friend... Pure talent. Man, I miss those days... Who else misses those days of pure God given talent???
The Platters have been my favorites for over 60 years. Their talent will live on for music lovers everywhere.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful song. The lead singer has one of the most beautiful voices in history.
Hi from the UK, have listened to this group all my life, and that's a quite a few years, the longevity of a group like them should never wane , I am glad they're is someone like yourself to keep them alive for the future, they should always be remembered 😉😊😊😊🤗🤗🤗🤗🤩🤩🤩 .
This song is gorgeous, if you want to hear another amazing voice try Cara Mia by Jay and the Americans. You will be truly impressed! :-)
One of the best songs I've ever heard.
One of my favourite Platter's songs is 'Harbor Lights' Nowadays, when people reminisce about this band, it's a number that is often forgotten.
As a guy thats currently 20, I’m so glad i found The Platters and this song just browsing classics. Such a masterpiece 👌🏽
He sounds so good because he had so much talent. I danced to this song quite a bit, and I still love the song, the group. Tony Williams is on top with the best singers. What a voice! And notice how nice the group presents itself--style. I happy you love them too.
"My Prayer" next, please. Amazing natural talent and LOTS of work. This should never be forgotten.
Love that you play the oldies and know that if you are true of voice, you don't need to do anything but stand there and sing.
It was great to watch this old video and see the faces behind these beautiful voices.
They don't make 'em like this anymore, a lost art. The beauty of this.........❤
In my opinion, My Prayer is their greatest song.
Sorry, I disagree. I vote for this one.
Love them! 💕💕💕💕Was able to see them a couple of times in concert! Fantastic voice, one of a kind! Great harmonies! 🎶🎶🎶🎧
I always feel like I am listening to poetry in song when I hear the platters. My favorite band from the 50s/60s era. Twilight time, harbor light, my prayers, enchanted are all good.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is an even older song, (for a musical made in 1933), but I really love this version.
Just a beautiful song that you really don't hear the likes of anymore.
