My intro to woodworking book has this in the Shaker style with leather straps tacked in. The original was made with slow growth pine from over 100 years ago. The author wondered about today's pine being study enough I think the rope is a bit sturdier. I also like the 7°angle. A semitransparent gray stain is what I want to paint mine, as I like the grain to show through for some interesting detail.
Hi Mitch. The leather straps sound interesting. I like the idea of a transparent finish too because the pine has some nice grain. I might experiment with some old water based paints from other jobs by watering them down a bit.

Took me back to making my shop stool where I tried these compound angles for the first time... lots of double-triple-checking ;)
